I wish we had time to organise one. This was very spur of the moment. We didn't have time to set up 2 amps...they're playing through the same amp via an A/B box as splitter, hence the not so great tone.
Tom Quayle fusion style licks it's amazing. His Hybrid and Legato absolutely amazing. Sammy really good at rock style lick. They both amazing in their style.
For the record, Sammy said to me several times over the next few days after this that he had never been up close and seen someone who could play like that before. Wait til you guys see the close up of Tom's right hand I filmed with my iPhone just before this! Subscribe and hit the notification bell to make sure you don't miss it when it's posted.
I’m sure it was just fun trying. Most “not from this planet” musical talents I’ve run across, really just appreciate hearing someone who plays that well.
Outstanding tone and playing from both. In my mind I know I'll never be able to play like that. And that's okay, because we have Tom and Sammy in the world to keep our jaws firmly stapled to the floor.
Both guitar players are awesome... And are amazing with their own playing styles... Tom Quayle has a much more fluid and buttery fusion style of soloing while Sammy Boller has that traditional glam rock, Eddie Van, Paul gilbert, Bucket Head to some neo classical style of soloing inspired by J. Malmsteen... Both are gods in their own right... ✌👍🤘
I like how they both look at each other's playing like "whoa man!" In all seriousness, both guys have exceptional control over their respective right hands. Either it be Tom's hybrid picking, or Sammy's tapping, both of these guys make use of their extended technique repertoire to further their unique harmonic and melodic voices. This is what being a virtuoso is all about. Thank you for posting this.
Amazing players, both just outstanding. Both had great touches and the differences were fun. Man Sammy is as fluent as Beck on that whammy bar, and Tom's hybrid/finger picking was outstanding. So much fun to watch.
Absolutely amazing to watch two great guitar players. I know it's not really meant to be a serious battle result but from the techniques and harmony level TQ obviously had a proper education and does everything "academically" whereas Sammy is more like a self-taught genius rock&roll player. I honestly admire both!
Tom instantly played that video game intro music for his announcement at the beginning. Man, he knows intervals & fretboard like anything. Didn't know Sami was a great player.
This is not a battle, this is a way how musicians appreciate each others. This is first time I saw Tom getting serious on his speed, while Sammy shows shred and playing more musical. What an epic show! We learn many things from it...
I hung out with Sammy the next few days and he kept saying how he'd never seen anybody play like that up close. Mutual appreciation from both lads here.
Your onto something here Rick. So many names and styles you could add to the battles. Just a matter of getting them to the studio and your right the viewing is the winner.👍
It’s like Steve Vai vs. Guthrie Govan. Comes down to a preference musically. For me, Sammy all the way. He’s probably the pinnacle of rock guitarists these days. Shout outs to outstanding runners up: Jommy Poledda, Sophie Lloyd, Kiki Wong and Joonas Parkkonen. 🎉 🎸
Actually Tom has some friends that are as good as him like Jake Gardiner and Mario...? I don't remember his name but you can find videos of them jamming. With Rick Graham too actually
bhosterman agreed, though Sammy appeals to my taste more. Did you check out my other video where I play Tom’s guitar and he gives me a close up of his picking hand?
@@RickHollis I agree... My taste too but Tom's style is so far out of my wheel house and more bizarre so I tend to gravitate towards it out of curiosity. I just want to understand whats going on. I will check out the video.
TQ is an awesome musician and a killer guitarist but I really LOVED Sammy's playing here. He's carrying the torch for that kind of playing which makes me happy! Okay, can we have Brandon Ellis + Martin Miller next time? ;)
Just my opinion, Tom sounded like he was improvising the other guy was playing things he already worked out. Oh, I wish the other guy didn’t do the whammy bar thing before and after everything you played. But besides that this is kind of cool.
Listen to the Abasi video a lot of Toms runs here and on that video are overlapped not knocking the guy you can only put out so much content without overlapping occasionally. Preferred the other gent because he came off more musical/melodic but personal preference I guess.
After my 4th viewing, I have to say Tom wins on clean runs but man I`m a child of the `80`s so I love Sammy`s shit. So hard to pick a winner. New respect for Tom`s style of jazz fusion shredness!
Way to put them on edge and nervous, but Tom Quayle is an absolute monster and no one is going to be touching him technique wise for quite some time in my mind.
@@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE c’mon if you’ve watched any Tom Quayle improv you’ve seen he favors a few of these runs and plays them a lot. Nothing wrong with that
@@David.. Sure, but Tom plays what actually fits and adapts to the music. The other guy is the equivalent of owning a lorry and wanting to enter it into every category of motorsports imaginable.
To me Tom is win slightly, because tom can play rock with the knowledge of jazz, and make his playing is unpredictable and more interesting.. Sam is good too, he have couple of interesting arpeggios
You can't not watch this with a giant smile on your face. Sammy and Tom are the real deal. Great one, Rick! 🤘
Thanks Tom. Just added you as a featured channel on my landing page. Love your work man.
That was sweet too let them jam out like that really cool stuff!
Quayle's hybrid picking is absolutely amazing

Rick Hollis very good job though 👍👍..
Thank you
Paul Gilbert is killer this gays
When Sammy played his runs all I could think about is Steve Vai in the movie Crossroads just before Macchio crushes him with the Paganini lick.
He had that tone and style nailed-I kept waiting for that lick with the laugh at the end.
Sameeee!
Exactly what I thought too
Not....
holy shiiit. saaammmeee!!! honestly prefered sammy tonally but loved both guitarists
Call Rick Graham immediately
It's a damn shame Rick doesn't put himself out there more and participate in things like this

Two completely different styles, both amazing guitar players! 👏👏
Absolutely...and I got to. see them do it close up :) I filmed Tom showing e some of his technique on my iPhone just before this. I'll post it soon.
My vote is on Tom, but both are amazing. Great chops!
There really needs to be more Tom Quayle music released. Such a great player.
going against Tom Quale is very brave. And Sammy did an amazing job
I’m sure it was just fun trying. Most “not from this planet” musical talents I’ve run across, really just appreciate hearing someone who plays that well.
They can both shred me out of the water but Tom Wins. He's just another level of crazy.
You should hear the fingers hitting the frets when you’re sitting next to him!
@@RickHollis I would love being that close!!
Tom has some fluid and unique phrasing. Other guy was insane too but damn tom sounds amazing.
Sammy, I really love yor playing, please never be ashamed of it
