Wow! This is amazing! I’ve been watching tons of videos and all of them use an online bought starter. They make it seem like there’s no way to grow mushrooms unless you’re buying a spore spawn (mostly folks selling this stuff) Your method is genius! I’m so excited now. $20 for 1-3 uses is pretty lame if you want to keep growing. I like your idea of storing mushrooms in a fridge for a month!!
Just for clarification, I believe you are using hay (dried grass). Straw is golden and wider , it is the hollow stalks which derive from grain growing. Animals don’t eat it, it is used as bedding and around strawberries. Hay works, straw works better as less contamination risk. Tipp: I find way less holes work better and way less work and cheaper using a few bits of micropore tape. Great inspiration to see that stems work so well for you.
You are correct, I didn't noticed I said straw instead of hay. But yes you can use both. Thanks for the tip, when I do my next buckets I won't drill as many holes. Btw have you tried bigger holes vs smaller holes in the buckets and if you have did you see any difference between them?
@@fungumelos I have done bigger holes but not seen any benefit, in the contrary, more expensive as needs more microtape and we can only get the reg size so more work, too cutting several strips to fit hole. I use a drill size 8 and that fits perfect with a halved microtape - never keen to use more materials than absolute necessary and much easier for the pins to push a small tape off than a big one. So in short, with a 5l bucket I use only 4-5 holes. I make no holes in about 1/3 of the bucket as this will be standing against the wall and I don't want to miss any new growth as they may dry out. If I have older buckets where I had drilled holes all around I close them off with duct tape from inside and outside so no mushrooms can fruit trough these and I only have 2/3 of the bucket to visually check.

Thank you so much! I've been searching for this for a while! I really want to grow mushrooms but all the other turorials all mention grain spawn and other expensive starter kits, it made my head spin x) this seems so fun to try! And thank you for making it so easy to follow :D
I'm late to the party on this video, but the beauty of grain spawn is that you can grow it 6x the amount you purchased. I'm not knocking this video as it was eye opening that you used the stems from old grows. You could have filled jars with say wheat berries and added stems. A cool idea, and will try that. Try to let you know how it goes. Thank you for the video.
Yes grain spawn is the way to grow for sure, my idea with this video was to show the "simplest" way to do it. It doesn't require anything special and you don't need to buy grain spawn or make your own. It isn't the best way to grow but it works well for your first time. I haven't yet made any videos on more advanced techniques but Im sure there are plenty of videos on how to make your own grain spawn, that is definitely the next step after growing from stems.
I saw where someone put their mushroom stems thru the food processor to create spawn. that seems to create an easier way to spread it out. I'm considering using a combination of used coffee grinds, straw and wood chips for my substrate (I have access to all three). what do you think of these ideas? once my bucket is colonized, can I use some of the substrate and mycelium on another bucket to create a perpetual crop of mushrooms? ty and really appreciated the video. 🙂
Sounds interesting, so you will have a slurry of mushroom stems, that will help the mycelium spreading faster. Using multiple substrate options will work and maybe it can work better than just using one of them, not sure but I have to try that. Using the colonized substrate on other bucket should work even after first or second flush, but there is a bigger risk for contamination, but yes in teory you can keep the mushrooms growing for a very long time by just giving them more food. Or in this case transfer some mycelium to a new bucket full of food.
People commonly do mycelium to grain inoculations which is essentially what you’re talking about. The reason for the grain is to provide nutrients. I use brown rice to spawn and then birth the grain spawn to coco coir. It’s easy, cheap and effective. Good luck in your mycological endeavors ✌️
Button mushrooms are a little more complicated than oyster mushrooms and use compost as a substrate. Shitake is generally grown on hardwood and would be more complicated too as it takes a long time to be ready to fruit, but that also depends on the strain but shitake takes about 2 to 3 months to be ready to grow some mushrooms and that makes this simple method were you don't sterilize anything a little hard as such a long time will make contamination more of a problem.
So you never have to open the bucket to add more water to the inside, right? The water at the beginning is enough through all the entire process? Thank you for sharing! I want to try this in Uganda (NGO)
Yes you can, in terms of contamination is a little harder, the way most mushroom growers do is they use clean rooms with hepa filtration and everything sterilized and clean to ensure that no contamination will grow. Unless you really want to dive deep into mushroom cultivation is not worth spending money to make your own cleanroom. As such you want to use what you can to avoid contamination, that includes sterilization or pasteurization of the substrate, clean everything with 70% ISO, use gloves, turn off the AC and close the windows so there are no air currents, if you are working inside, clean yourself before inoculation, use clean clothes, don't talk or sing while inoculating. Those are just a couple things you can do to try to avoid contamination, that said even doing all of this may not be enough, it depends on your environment and even the time of the year. But don't be afraid of contamination, is part of the mushroom cultivation, if you got contam try to understand what caused it, and fix that next time you try to cultivate them.
Nothing will last forever the mycelium will run out of food and water, and eventually become weak, it will stop producing and mold will take over. In teory you could add more food, but what I would do is just get other bucket and use some fresh straw, and for spawn I would use some of the old colonized straw from the original bucket, instead of having to use stem pieces. I would try to use the straw more in the middle of the bucket as it should be the cleanest one, so you have less chance of contamination. But your bucket can produce multiple flushes if you take care of it, just keep misting and you will be able to get mushrooms, I got 4 flushes of mushrooms from that bucket and I still have it. But if you want to use the straw as spawn on other bucket I would only go for 2 flushes max as the more flushes you get the weaker the mycelium gets.
Thanks for the great vid from start to finish! I have question about the fruiting stage. When the mushrooms start appearing, are you continuing to mist the mushrooms themselves? Some say not to spray the mushrooms but put in another container and spray the walls of that container (a problem if using a 5-gal bucket as they are large). Other vids, show people spraying the entire bucket down with a hose! What do you do?
When the mushrooms appear you don't really want to mist them directly, try to spray the air around them, its fine to get some mist on the mushrooms but you don't want a lot as it can cause bacterial blotch and other problems.
@@fungumelos Do you use a fruiting chamber when you fruit them indoors as said you did in the video? Or just put it in it's own spot and mist reg? I'm wondering if the bucket method also requires a martha setup or something similar. Thanks!
What about flies and other insects in the environment during that final fruiting stage? Are they a problem by laying eggs in or on your growing mushrooms? I am in a warm, tropical place, high humidity.
It may be a problem if you have a lot of insects around, in that case I would find a way to have the bucket protected by a fine mesh so the insects can't get to the mushrooms but dont forget that the mushrooms need some space to grow.
I am impressed by your idea. Could you test whether your idea will work using cold pasteurized cardboard instead of straw please? May I suggest that you make a video when testing your idea using cardboard? Thank you.
It should work, you just just need to replaced the straw with the cardboard and do a cold pasteurization instead. You just need to make sure that the mushroom you want to grow will grow on cardboard, I have done a grow on straw and cardboard but never only on cardboard.
You can probably get away with using them right away, just keep in mind that if you use them right away it will take longer to colonize, if you wait the stems should start to get fuzzy as the mycelium grows and if the stems have mycelium on them it will start to colonize the substrate right away, if you use them fresh they still need to start to grow mycelium and then they will start to colonize the substrate. The disadvantage of this is that as you are not working with a complete sterile substrate and a clean and sterile lab, that means you will have a higher chance of contamination, the longer it takes to colonize the more time you give contamination to spread and unless you are working in a complete clean room with hepa filtration there will always be some sort of contamination present, but the contamination takes time to start to grow and spread, that is why you may want to wait for the mycelium to start to grow in the stems before you use them, but you can use them fresh I have used them fresh before with no problem. You just need to keep in mind that the longer it takes to colonize the higher the risk of contamination.
You need compost, and you should use a large tray instead of a bucket as button mushrooms are top fruiters and they need more space to grow. Not sure if the stems will work well for spawning but you can always try.
Question jack I have pleurotus ostreatus mycelium. I buy but no instructions. I saw what you did .I think instead of fresh mushrooms you cut and put in a bucket with straw I will buy in the farm then I think I will put this I have 40 grams.i will do the same procedure what you than .it is ok?
I have never tried but let me know if it works. The temperature is ok you just don't really want to go too hot, if it is colder it would just take more time to colonize.
So with this method, I could use the stems of the harvested mushrooms to grow some more afterwards? Or even use the straw from the old bucket (I read that in some comments)? How about the risk of contamination?
Yes you can, there is always the risk for contamination, you are not using clean spawn and you are not using sterile or pasteurized substrate. I would say the risk of contamination is lower with stems than with an old substrate but this is so simple that even if it gets contam you can just try it again. With the proper method you would need to make grain spawn inoculate it with the mushroom you want to grow, sterilize some bags of substrate, and then inoculate the bag with the grain spawn in a clean room to avoid contam. It would require a lot more work and way more investment and it can also get contamed. No method is perfect this is just a simple way to grow some mushrooms at home.
Please make other video. I've click subscribe and interesting on your video. I am oyster mushroom farmer from Java Indonesia. I using sawdust substrate but want learning using rice straw. Please make other video about oyster mushroom. Thank you
That depends on what mushroom you are growing, the substrate, incubation temperatures and a lot of other things, but I would wait at least 2 weeks before checking for the first time, and don't forget before opening the lid check the holes if you see mycelium in all holes or almost all holes, open the lid and see how its doing. If the holes don't have mycelium wait more time and check later, if there is mold growing get rid of the substrate, and clean your bucket and start again.
This is not sterilization or even pasteurization, this is a simple method to kill most of the stuff that is on the straw it won't kill everything and it won't sterilize the straw, the idea is to kill and slow down contamination that is on the straw not to kill everything. You can sterilize the straw, but you will need to pressure cook it for a couple hours.
This buckets are not ideal, they were just reused for this but if you want to use a bucket I would recommend to get a proper food grade bucket that can handle high temps. My concern isn't the plastic but that this buckets had paint in them before, they have been very well cleaned and used as water bucket for irrigation for a couple years, so I am pretty sure that aren't paint residues in the bucket but I wouldnt recommend and I am planning on getting propper bucket for this.
I always wonder why do we need to sterilizes it. Be it with steam, chemical, or whatever means of sterilization. Yes i know yall will reply "to kills all the shyts" no thats not what i wanted to hear. What i wanna know is if these mushroom cant grow unless its pasteurized or not.
They can grow without any treatment, the problem is that if you don't pasteurize or sterelize, most likely you will grow mold instead. We treat the substrate to kill or make the molds that are already present on the substrate more weak. By doing this we give a higher chance for our mycelium to grow before the mold can take over the substrate.
That depends on the mushroom, there are lots of mushrooms that we can't grow yet, from what I know termite mushrooms rely on termites to give the mycelium food and the mycelium in turn gives food to the termites. I don't know if this mushroom is possible to cultivate but if it needs the help of termites, wood would probably be a better substrate than straw. The only way to know is to do specific research on the mushroom you want to grow and see if someone has done it before and how they did it.
Thank you for making it so simple. People sell the spawns so expensive here like gold. Thank you and God bless you so much.

I am oyster mushroom farmer from Java Indonesia. I using sawdust substrate but want learning using rice straw. Please make other video about oyster mushroom. Thank you
Would it help any if the straw were halfway composted?
Not sure, but it should work.
Great video; thank you!!
Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you for watching.
Can we use whole mushrooms not just stems? Please answer!!!
@Dee Dones Ok, thank you for the answer! Wish you good day!
Am very impressed, but my question is how long can you keep harvesting
It depends, I got 3 flushes out of it in a total of 45 days.
Best explanation
Me interesó el vídeo mucho pero no comprendo el idioma .
I don't think the spawn can be made from fresh musroom and I have to thank you for your nice sharing
No problem, good luck growing mushrooms.
Wow amazing
How many days will I cover the openings before uncovering it
That depends on what mushroom you are growing, the substrate, incubation temperatures and a lot of other things, but I would wait at least 2 weeks before checking for the first time, and don't forget before opening the lid check the holes if you see mycelium in all holes or almost all holes, open the lid and see how its doing. If the holes don't have mycelium wait more time and check later, if there is mold growing get rid of the substrate, and clean your bucket and start again.
Boiling water into straw...temp will drop.
Sufficient to sterilise the straw???
This is not sterilization or even pasteurization, this is a simple method to kill most of the stuff that is on the straw it won't kill everything and it won't sterilize the straw, the idea is to kill and slow down contamination that is on the straw not to kill everything. You can sterilize the straw, but you will need to pressure cook it for a couple hours.
Thank you
Would this work with portabella mushrooms?
No, you should use compost and trays as they top fruit and need more space to grow, not sure if they will grow well from stems.
Thank you so much for your video!!!!
Plastic chemical leak into the straw?
@@fungumelos thats what i wanted to hear
Too bad i ve tried it myself so i knew the answer rn
Thanks anyway
Can we use termite mushroom or wild mushrooms as spawn?
That depends on the mushroom, there are lots of mushrooms that we can't grow yet, from what I know termite mushrooms rely on termites to give the mycelium food and the mycelium in turn gives food to the termites. I don't know if this mushroom is possible to cultivate but if it needs the help of termites, wood would probably be a better substrate than straw. The only way to know is to do specific research on the mushroom you want to grow and see if someone has done it before and how they did it.
