I wish I were in Canada! Thanks for these instructions! I'm getting ready to start a grow of Lions Mane using your method!
Bro, where are the Lion's Mane mushroom spores and how to make a spore syringe
When drilling into thin plastic, it's best to run the drill backwards. This avoids the plastic cracking and splitting on the drill's teeth, instead using friction heat to melt through where contact is made.
Spencer, your "explaining things" mode speaking voice is kind of like an auditory hug. Very nice.
Haha. Thanks, Amy!
Psychedelics are just an amazing discovery. It's quite fascinating how effective they are for depression and stress disorders. Saved my life
proven very effective in the treatment of various mental health issues aside from other health benefits. Helped me get out of years of depression and excessive alcohol use.

@@folkfungi Can I use wood shavings that is normally used for rabbit nesting. We can't get hardwood fuel pallets in my neck of the woods.
@@AndrewduToit You can but you might want to pasteriuze them with boiling water.
@@folkfungi if you grow lions mane, you´ll probaply also eat them?! Studys say, that only the mycelium is containing erinacines. And that erinacines are responsible for the NGF. You probaply haven´t eaten only the mycelium over a time? Do you just eat the fruiting body?Because in this vido there was no myclium. Have you had any effects from the intake of the fruting body?
I had wanted to ask same! If the pellets shown here were the same thing as small pet bedding, as looks the same.
Nice job! I'm just a beginner who has gotten addicted to this mushroom growing hobby...I'll try this method for my next LM grow.
Thanks, Joe! It's definitely an addicting hobby. If you give the LM bucket method a try, let us know how it goes. 😊

How did it grow any update ????
So excited to get started with fungi. I’m sure to love the process and produce. Thanks!
Thank you! I knew there had to be a way to do it, afterall they grow in the wild where conditions are not even remotely close to sterile.
My man! This video is my Bible right now. Thank you for making it, you've really taken the bite out of taking my first steps into cultivation. My spawn is on the way, and my buckets are ready to rock, you're the best!

No problem! Thanks for watching!
Very informative video!! I look forward to more ☺️
Thank you! I have some more videos in the works.
I haven’t seen any videos on lions mane being grown in buckets, thank you for proving it can be done! 💪🍄
I think you probably could grow anything in buckets at this inoculation ratio. It's basically taking a grow mix type ratio (40/60) and separating out it's high and low nutrient parts, and colonizing the high nutrient in sterile conditions, and then you don't need to bother with sanitation for the low nutrient part. I'm surprised there doesn't seem to be too much of a yield penalty here.
It would be interesting to see masters mix separated out this way, colonize the soy hulls under sterile tech, then dump it in a bucket of sawdust.
No problem!
Very cool! Great job with the video. Exactly what I was looking for!
Also, do you recommend any particular pellets?
I'm glad you found the video helpful! The key is to use hardwood pellets, not softwood ones. Typically, hardware stores will have cheap bags of hardwood pellets that are a blend of hardwood species, and then more expensive bags with particular types of hardwood species. In my experience, the cheap bags work just fine.
Cool technique from a fellow Canadian! Thanks a bucket! 🎉🎉🎉

Edit - Found the answers to how many times you can harvest and reusing grain spawn:
1) ~2 - 5 harvests (each subsequent harvest/"flushes", less fruiting).
2) Sadly no you unfortunately can't add more pellets to keep it going :(
Thanks again Spenser for all the videos, just subscribed! :)
thanks for making this video!

Hey Spencer, how did it go with the second flush? I'm curious 😁
smart and effortless, nice!
Thanks!
Great Video, thanks.
Thank you!
The best. Thanks.
Thank you too!
Very interesting substrate, i noticed its very common to use hardwood fuel pellets and wheat bran mixed together, but this video proves hardwood fuel pellets can be used by itself as well. Going to try your way, but im going to add one cup of wheat bran just for more nutrients. Hopefully that does not mess up the moisture content. Thank you for the video!
Let me know how it goes! Adding wheat bran without sterilization increases the chance for contamination. If your substrate becomes contaminated, try half a cup or less. But if you use a really high spawn rate, like the one used in this video, I think you can get away with using a decent amount of unsterilized wheat bran.
You can add something like gypsum safely, but since the wood pellets are mostly sterilized, any other nutrients you add will more than likely get moldy unless you sterilize the substrate mix.
Nice!
Great work
Thank you!
I use the bags. I sterilize them in my pressure cooker. One bag at a time. This bucket idea is a great idea. Thanks for the idea! Great video.
Thanks Dave!
I make bags with a method that uses boiling water poured into the pellets. Take them all and put them in a box, cover them with a blanket for an hour and bam all pasteurized and ready to go. This way I can make 50 bags quickly and never have to touch a pressure cooker
Spencer, this was so helpful! So informative! I have a few questions:
1. Do you ever remove the lid?
2. How long can you grow from that bucket before contents need to be disposed?
3. What is too much moisture? I see you spraying but how to prevent over moisturizing?
I would also love to know how many times you can harvest before replacing everything.
Until it stops giving or contaminates. Eventually will start running low on nutrients and keep putting out less and less until it's not worth it anymore.
I have all these same questions. Hope he sees this soon!
Awesome video...clear and actionable tips. Two questions - 1) do you measure the temperature/moisture under the bag or do you just wing it? 2) Can you do it in a room where you spend time/work...like is there a smell or excessive moisture that would be a problem? Thanks
Great video! Thanks for sharing! How many times can you get them to grow? And what is the total cost?
Thank you so much! I never had much confidence in growing mushrooms, until watching this video! I'm looking for my supplies now and will let you know how things turn out. Thanks again for the AWESOME video!👍👍🍄
Hi. Great Video! Very nicely explained, and almost calming :)
I have some lions mane LC in the fridge, and wondering if you think I could produce brf cakes to use as spawn? Or is it better to invest in a PC and sterilise some grain?
Thank you! I personally don't have any experience with brf cakes.
Great video. Have you ever tried mixing the left over mycelium into a newly prepared bucket of pellets to try and perpetuate the process? If that would work I would have a lot more motivation to grow lions mane.
Thanks for sharing Spencer. Really interesting. Where can I get the grain spawn? Did Canadian Tire sponsor this video? If not they should 😂. Looking forward to your next video.
Thanks, Haydn! We plan to offer lion's mane grain spawn in the next month or so. In the meantime, try Googling "lion's mane grain spawn + your location" to find a supplier. And no, Canadian Tire didn't sponsor the video, but I should have asked them! 😂
I love your chanel. I subbed. FYI if you use your drill in reverse, it's much easier.
Thank you! And thanks for the tip!
Lions Main is very tasty , I just fried it in a skillet today for the first time.
I agree. Super tasty!
This is simple. I like it. I never know you could mix the pellets without sterilizing. How come you didn’t add wheat bran?
i see after 3 months you have progress in views, hope you are doing well :3
Thank you!

I'm glad! Sometimes I make it and sometimes I buy it.

What wood was the pellet Maple, Cherry, oak? I know some mushrooms like different wood for the grain, or does it matter in this application?
What temperatures do you keep it in for spawning and fruiting?
thanks for doing the video, im going to try it but I have a tip for you, when you drill holes in plastic with a hole saw put the drill in reverse, drill at high speed but a little bit of pressure on the drill, its a lot easier and makes the edges of the hole a lot smother
Thanks for the tip!
Just tried this out and wow, does it work way better. Thanks for the tip!
Thank you for showing how to grow them like this! I have been wondering though: is the humidity tent enough to keep the spores from spreading around the house, or is that not a concern with this type of mushroom (as long as you harvest it early enough)?
Thanks for watching! Lion's mane doesn't release its spores until the spines are quite long, and for taste, you'd want to harvest it well before that.
Nice method thank you ! Did you try it with other than oyster mushroom ? What is the protocol after the first harvest for the next flushes, you just spray, no resting time ?
Thanks! I've tried it with lion's mane and oyster mushrooms. After the first harvest, just continue to spray and keep things humid! My second flush for this bucket started about 5 days after harvesting the first one.
holla :) excellent work and video. I have some questions? did you choose the size of the bucket by chance? Did you try with a larger bucket? did you try with a different substrate? the pellet can become expensive and have access to sawdust. Is it a good idea? thanks for your time and keep doing this, your smile motivates me to start growing .
Thank you! I chose a smaller bucket because I live in a smaller home, but you can definitely use a larger bucket, like a 5 gallon one. I haven't tried with a different substrate. Lion's mane mushrooms prefer hardwood. Hope this helps!
This video was really helpful, thank you! Do you think that if I cut 4 holes instead of 2, It would produce more?
Did you try this out? If you did, how did it go, I want to try this out. Thank you!
hi, new to the wood loving side of mushrooms. how long does it take for Lion's mane to colonize a spawn bag. going to make and use liquid culture, so this experiement. thanks
Great. That's a very simple but effective technique. What's the humidity range from start to finish. Thanks for your post.
Ideally, try to keep the humidity in the 80% to 90% range, but it will grow decently in the 70s.
@@folkfungi thanks for your prompt reply. All the best
Awesome video! Where do you get the spawn you used?
I made this grain spawn, but there are lots of suppliers in the US and Canada. If you live in Canada, I sell grain spawn.
I love this tutorial! Please make more content! I enjoy how thorough you were with your explanations! I am trying this technique now! How large is the hole saw you used?
Thanks, Shane! I plan on making more content, and I have a few more videos in the works. The hole saw I used is two inches, but a one inch hole saw would work well too.
@@folkfungi Thanks man! Looking forward to the new videos!
How many harvests can we expect from a bucket? Can the old grain be used as spawn when starting a new bucket? Thanks, looking forward to getting started.
How many harvests does this bucket method yield? How long before I’ll have to replace the spawn/pellet mixture?
I'm trying a slight variation on this method now! I didn't have enough grain spawn to do a 40% mixture, so I pasteurized aspen shavings meant for bunny bedding and used a spent Lion's Mane sawdust block to innoculate. I just broke it apart and sprinkled it over every handful of soaked aspen I put in the bucket. Hopefully it goes well and thanks for the inspiration!
I’m about to be doing the same thing! In a while we may find out if the other had any success! Fun timing
Please let me know if this works! I have a ton of aspen chips from my oyster grows
Awesome. Let me know how it goes.
@@folkfungi for mine, it’s been about 2 weeks in a bucket of straw layered like they normally do with grain spawn. Plus a couple days. Been out of state due to family emergency stuff, so I haven’t gotten to check. If you respond on here again in about a week, (idk how the notifications work to find this again) I’ll tell you if the mycelium is spreading or not. Ofc, mine is pink oyster mycelium

Is this method proper for shitake?
I've never tried growing shitake mushrooms!
Hey Spencer, this is a truly great video, exactly what I was looking for! I was wondering if you can reuse the bottle after the whole lions mane substrate is fully harvested multiple times? Can I just clean it out or do I have to buy a new one each time and time again because of the micro bacteria? Thank you very much!
You can reuse the bucket after cleaning it!
@@folkfungi thank you!
Really enjoyed your video. Very informative. I've caught the mushroom bug! 🍄 I bought oyster mushrooms, put the stem butts to colonize the mycelium in coffee grounds. They are now fruiting beautifully! After watching your video, I ordered some Lion's Mane LC from a family run business on Vancouver Island. Then I went out and bought my own 8 lt Canadian Tire bucket! Some questions though. What do you think of putting 4 - 1" holes around the bucket? Should I add drainage holes in the bottom? Once the pinning begins, can I put the bucket in the shot gun fruiting station I made? If so, what do you think is a good humidity level? Hope to hear from you!
Hi Elizabeth. Thanks for the kind words! It makes me happy that you bought the exact same Canadian Tire bucket! I think four 1" holes would work great. And yup, a shotgun fruiting chamber would work nicely for this bucket. In terms of humidity, aim to keep it in the 80-90% range. Hope this is helpful!
Nice!!!
Thanks!
how often should I mist/spray around the mushrooms?
Spencer, do you use hardwood pellets like the ones they sell for barbequing?
Yes, exactly!
Great video, any idea about teparature range ? İ wonder
