Just some form of bacterial contamination. It can come in many forms, I found the most common is cobweb mold and trichoderma but there are quite a few others!
Total noob here so may seem like a dumb question, did you just ignore the contamination? Like did you Chuck the fruit growing out of, or around it? I’m very interested to know, thanks!
Yessir, I decided to let the grow continue to see where it went. The fruits that come from this bin are still 100% edible. Most definitely though need to be careful when it comes to trich as it can be very irritable for family members and pets if they have sensitive lungs and immune systems. The spores can linger in the air and get into your growing area and living spaces. You also can notice cons such as much lower yield than normal when your bins are contaminated.
Really cool videos, thanks for all the effort! Short question, is tricodherma bad for us humans? Can you poison yourself or something like that? I like to do chili fermentation and in case of chili ferments if you see any mold or similar you need to throw away whole batch.
You are 100% correct that when you see mold to toss it right away. That is the case in mycology as well. The spores can get everywhere in your growing area and ruin future progress. It is also harmful for humans and pets. Not something that’s going to make you feel ill right away unless you are already immune compromised but certainly something you don’t want in your home. I try to toss any signs of contamination away immediately however for the footage I do attempt some experiments to save grows in the case that its the only grow my audience has going and they want to save it at all cost. Haven’t found much though. Usually after you see the contamination the entire grow is pretty much a throw away. Hope this helps!

While others will struggle even with a 1:1. Also I don’t believe the mushrooms are affected at all when the bin is contaminated. Dont quote me on that though as I am not 100% sure what the science is behind it.
Hey friend, very helpful videos. I’m currently looking to do my first s2b, and 1 of my 2.5lb grain bag had very aggressive growth- 4 days after a break n shake and only 18 days total since inoculation. it looks what seems fully colonized all the way around, all healthy white mycelium. There are a few grains that are still partially showing a little tinybit of their original color- but otherwise it looks great. I’m a bit hesitant though, as I don’t want to s2b too early. Would you recommend waiting a few days after you think it’s fully ready, and is it normal for full colonization just 4 days after B n S? Thanks 🙌
Best of luck!! I had two colonized bags that were colonizing for about 4 months spawned to bulk. Both were sadly contaminated but I feel like the substrate was actually the problem this time. The bags looked totally fine and smelled normal
A true casing is applied after your substrate is 100% colonized and is peat-based. If timed correctly, the mushrooms should push up through the casing layer from the substrate beneath. Ideally casing layer should not fully colonize. When using a pseudo casing layer you are simply topping the cake with the same substrate you used to spawn to bulk. This in turn creates a better microclimate and keeps moisture retained. But it is most certainly not a true casing layer. Usually you want your casing layer to be fully non nutritious so instead of consuming the casing layer the mycelium will just colonize the casing layer. This is just from what I have learned so far and is my best understanding of the differences.
I've started a tub and it started colonization then stopped I'm not exactly sure if it's something I did wrong or some contamination but it smells and looks fine it just stopped colonizing
