    Well explained, good job! I had to laugh, saw your Berkey & thought wow, you have to pull it out each time to fill it. Then I remembered that mine is set up the same way too! Duh! 😅

    The futon frame is a great idea. I was going to take one to the landfill. I am going to save it for my van build.

    What a great idea. My van is going to have the same futon frame. Or it looks the same from IKEA but mines going to actually be used like a futon then convert to bed. I bet a lot of DIY’ers are going to use this idea. Love your channel.

      Thank you so much! Which way will the bed face in couch mode? Sounds awesome and we would love to see it all finished up.😀

      @maitildamcintyre9344 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The floor plan is totally different than yours. The futon is in the middle of the van. When in couch mode you face the sliding door. When in bed mode your head would be behind the front seats and feet toward rear doors. It’s not complete yet. I’m loving and learning a lot from your channel. Would love to show you when it’s complete.

    Good approach. I have a 2015 promaster, and the first thing I did was raise the bed further to store my mountain bike. Adding a 4 x 4 at each end did the trick, and could work with this setup as well. Like the lightness and maneuverability of the futon frame!

      Thank you! We have a bike coming soon and may have to put a 2x4 on each rail to get the height. Super light frame for sure😀 Thank you for watching and commenting we appreciate you.

  • @thomas4315

    I did the same huge weight saving. I cut a metal bed spring frame about 7" of the center then put 3' metal sleeve inside and pound it together. You have to take off 2 roll of the wire mesh then spring load it again.custom size.
    My frame was a light strong wood frame. Which I used as storage above. It's 2 feet of the ceiling just before the bed right a across the van. On mine it rest on my conversion old roof top and a snug strong got a high top.
    Think I the only one doing it this way. That is I want a real living room open space. So I also run a made wood frame from the front old roof and storage above the driver cab on both side all the way back to just in front of the bed and rest on that cross member frame. So it has 3' of walking head room in the middle. Enough to stand and shower too.
    With so much storage room up. I only got my 4- 6 volts battery's stove 22 gal propane. A kitchen island, blender and ice cream maker maker. & A.c air. Then before the bed I've got a carpet 1-1/2 ' step up area. that to lie on before the bed and pantry storage and water. Under you need to lift up the floor door. So my high top van has a full living room and I have swevel seats also. It totally wide open below. the whole van are is open and to design and furnish mine a Art Deco/ ocean decor. I also got custom louver. in where my big top Window use to be. and the back right side louver can be push out and hold up with a stick. Again a first. LOL

    Greetings,
    As the owner of a 2021 Ram ProMaster, I am closing in on finalizing among many options, which bed I will install in the back of my van. This is close. I'd like to ask about squeaking as you drive the van. Does the immovable nature of the futon bed base cause squeaks? I noticed some who used the IKEA bed spans to build the base. What i like about that path is, the spans have the ability to telescope to different lengths. ***This also means the spans will "breathe" as the van rides down the roads all over the country. I am convinced this would lover the squeaks that will occur due to the immovability of the spans, for example, in the use of the futon frame shown here in this video... The alteration from this setup is as simple as using the free brackets and then hooking the aluminum rails to the brackets... Thank you for your time,

    • @oneadVANtureatatime
      @oneadVANtureatatime  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The futon frames worked great for about a year but the. The welds began to break. We have since replaced with a metal frame from Amazon. We have LOTS of rattles and noises in the van but I don’t think we have ever noticed any coming from the bed frame. Here is a link to the video where we replaced the bed frame! Oh and one last thing….. it is VERY IMPORTANT to have space between slats or you will have mold!

    • @oneadVANtureatatime
      @oneadVANtureatatime  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BigTomsVan well it’s expensive!!😂 it is a gravity fed water filtration. Ours has two charcoal filters inside it. They say you can filter water from ponds, creeks, and lakes and get the harmful bacteria filtered out. We have never had to resort to these methods as of yet. We do like that it makes bad tasting water taste better and an extra piece of mind with our drinking water. We fill up in lots of different locations and facilities. We have the smallest countertop one (berkey travel) and we love it.

    Thank you for such an excellent idea! How is it going sleeping across the width of the van? Any issues crawling over each other to get in and out of bed or challenges leveling the bed while parking? Thanks for your insight and a fantastic video!

    • @oneadVANtureatatime
      @oneadVANtureatatime  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jess. We like sleeping width-wise because it saves more room for the rest of the build. Since this video we have added more sleeping room by making cut-outs in the wall. I think our next video..tomorrow where we add a cabin window will show that extra space. I am 5’10 and now the bed is good. Yes, we do cross over each other, but it's not a big deal...at least I don't think so 😀

      Hi Jose! I am no electrician but here is what I did. I bought a 1500 watt sine wave inverter and used the wires it came with to hook it right up to the vehicle battery. I mounted the inverter to a board that fits between the two seats and protects the floor. Just know that we have heard if you do this it could affect your vehicle warranty if you have any electric issues. Our warranty is over so we took the risk 😂 I wish I was an electrician and had a better solution for you.

      The angle iron is 52 inches long. That fits the futon frame just right. We did custom cut our memory foam mattress to fit where the original futon mattress would have worked fine. We have the 159” wheelbase but not the extended. Hope this helps.

    I guess you never heard of Rivnuts or Nutserts.

      No need when I initially put in the angle Iron, super simple job anyone can do with supplies they might already have.

      I owned a Jeep Wrangler and used Nutserts with a few modifications, they are a good option as you suggest.

    Get way to up-cycle and save you a ton of work or $ when building van.
