I find this a wonderful interview and most fascinating ( I haven’t listened to it all) is where Mr Pahud describes the music of Debussy.
I can relate to this in that I played with ENO from 1975-82 and amongst the extensive repertoire was Pelleas et Melisande.
I came out from the theatre as if in another world, yet couldn’t understand why. The flute part is just a number of short phrases, interjections almost, quite unsatisfying in themselves. This at any rate is my recollection. However, the whole 3 hour world of Debussy’s compelling spell was as if a mystical experience.
I haven’t heard anyone, especially a flute player refer to this opera in the same way as it affected me.
I am thoroughly enjoying being in Emmanuel Pahud’s company, via TH-cam, both in performance, tuition classes and most particularly this beautifully conducted interview. He speaks from so wide a range of experience and seems visibly moved by the the St Matthew Passion with Simon Rattle as well as the effect on him personally,of Debussy.
I heard James Galway at the 1970 master class in Canterbury playing to Moyse ( I even drove Galway to and from the school in my ancient Ford Popular!) He played Soussman studies with jaw dropping accuracy, tone and speed. Flute playing on another level. He would have been 30 then. Moyse sat there with his one lung and his pipe just listening, obviously aware of the sheer brilliance and saying very little.
Being a largely self taught player of little confidence I dared to play the Bach E major. Marcel Moyse said ( remembered to this day) “I think you have something to offer “
an encouragement I clung on to in following years, achieving a modest career in flute playing as well as a lifelong fascination with the instrument.
Thank you Emmanuel Pahud for sharing your valuable self with others in this thoughtful and moving discussion.
