The New York Mets have only won two World Series championships, but those two were so incredible that you'd think they'd won 10. While they may not go all the way often, the runs they do go on are, in a word, magical. This video is going to act as a prologue for our Wilpon documentary coming soon. Once we see what the Mets are like at their best, we can have a good idea of what's at stake with this franchise.

I grew up in NJ as a Yankees fan, but I had a soft spot in my heart for the Mets. The 86 team were entertaining that's for sure. They rivaled the mid 70's Yankees for crazy headlines, but they balled out on the field. I think every NY baseball fan remembers exactly where they were when that crazy game 6 ending happened. A very fond memory for me. I also got to see Dwight Gooden pitch live a few times back then at Shea. His first couple seasons were incredible. He was a right handed Sanded Kaufax. Absolutely dominant. Sadly cocaine and injuries doomed a sure HOF career.

  • @jmn327
    @jmn327 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

It's kind of incredible that just about every year the Mets make the playoffs, there's some kind of extra drama to things, always a narrative or story.
    1969 - "Miracle Mets"
1973 - Worst division champ winning percentage ever (lots of injuries that year), still beat the Big Red Machine and push the Jackson-era A's to Game 7
1986 - Everything you just heard here.
1988 - 100 win team falls to "Mike @#$%ing Scioscia"
1999 - Dramatic run to Wild Card leads to Game 163, Pratt's series ending walk-off, Grand Slam Single, "Kenny @#$%ing Rogers"
2000 - Subway Series, Piazza vs. Clemens
2006 - Endy Chavez with the catch, near 100 win team falls to "Yadier @#$%ing Molina"
2015 - Insane run to the division crown, Daniel Murphy goes crazy
2016 - Closest thing to normal with a Wild Card game loss, but still an epic Bumgarner vs. Syndergaard duel.
Might just be the nature of playing in a city like New York, but there's always *something* going on with this club when it's good, never a "normal" great season.
And the weirdest part? No other expansion club has more than two World Series titles, so the Mets are tied for the lead. Um...yay? ...Yeah, let's get to adding some hardware ASAP now that the Wilpons are gone.

The other three that we lost - are nothing to be ashamed of. We lost to great teams who were having a multi-year playoff run. The '73 A's were a powerhouse and went on to repeat the next year. The 2000 Yankees were another powerhouse. And Kansas City had lost the WS the year before they beat us and were an excellent and more complete team than us. We could have destroyed everyone in '99 but they didn't have elite pitching - but we did have one of the greatest infields ever. You guys should do a video on that '99 team, asking where does that infield rank all-around with hitting and defense. Piazza catching and mashing, Olerud was a GG level first baseman and could rake with the best of them. Same for Ventura at 3rd and Alfonzo at second. And to this day Rey Ordonez is still the most incredible shortstop I've ever seen with the glove. If he'd been able to hit he'd be in Cooperstown. Thast infield was CRAZY and never gets enough props. Anyway, if we copy the Braves blueprint of building a real farm system stacked with talent while also having the money to sign any big name free agents - we'll be a problem for a long time. But our whole scouting system needs to be torn down and built back up.

The 1968 Mets drew 1.7M in attendance which was second in the National League (Cardinals drew 2M and won the WS). They were 4th overall in MLB behind Detroit (the other WS participant in '68) and Boston (who played in the WS in '67). So yeah, the team that finished 1 game out of last place in the NL out drew most of MLB. Slightly more than "200 fans."

I was not a Mets fan before 1986. That series changed that. I'm still not a huge Mets fan, but I'm a fan of that year's team. It is still to this day, my favorite World Series that I've ever watched.

What amuses me about the 8:21 story is that Darryl Strawberry was actually there with the (relatively) mild-mannered white guys who got arrested (Ojeda, Darling, Tim Teufel and Rick Aguilera) but had called it a night before the shit hit the fan.

The Mets came so close to winning the series in 1973. They were leading 3-2 going into Game 6, but couldn't seal the deal in the next two games. They actually outscored the A's in the Series, 24-21.

Even looking up until now you’re looking at 9 postseason appearances and 5 Pennants all time. Which isn’t Marlins territory but still a pretty good success rate for a team known to be a hard luck franchise

    • @hmhm856

The Marlins also had a higher payroll. They spent millions on the players on their 1997 team alone. The Mets have been in five World Series, which is more than the Marlins.
