I was a second grader in Manhattan when Game Six happened. The next morning was Sunday, and when I woke up, I stayed in bed because I wasn't sure if what I saw was real or a dream. When I saw my mom's smile as I walked into the living room, I knew it was real. I miss you, mom. LGM.

When he retired he was borderline and then the steroid era and the inflated offensive number made his contributions look much smaller. But anyone who saw him play day in and day out knows better.
People who don't understand baseball but think they do (folks like Mike Francesa) don't believe Keith belongs. In fact, Keith is better than a number of players who are in the Hall of Fame. It is absurd that Hernandez is not enshrined in Cooperstown.
No question Keith should be in HOF! In my option, the greatest defensive first baseman ever (11 gold gloves, I think), plus he was a .296 lifetime hitter, an unbelievable clutch hiter, also has an MVP award as well. Hopefully he will get in through the Veterans Committee some day soon.

Another thing that I think he forgot was they were actually going to start Dennis "Oil can" Boyd in that game seven that was rained out, that next night that they actually got to play the game seven, they wound up bringing back Bruce Hurst to make his third start in the series despite the fact that his previous start was in game five.
I was a junior in high school when the Hernandez trade happened. Had been born and bred as a Mets fan by my father, and 90% of my friends were Yankees fans. I remember turning on the game that June night in 1983 and hearing talk of the trade of Mike Jorgensen, an outstanding defensive first baseman that would regularly replace Dave Kingman, got nothing but cash back, and I remember thinking “why the heck did we dump Jorge?” Then they kept talking about Hernandez’s accomplishments, without really naming him for a few minutes, but I was a baseball junkie back then and literally was in denial that my NY Mets could have acquired a player of Hernandez’ stature and leadership. The first thing I said to my buddies the next day was that this was the trade that would turn everything around. Pretty prescient for a seventeen year old kid. Keith quickly replaced John Stearns as my favorite player ever. Stats in no way capture the true impact of having him on the field every day. Just a fantastic talent and the genuine leader the team needed.
I love the story Keith tells about arriving in NY after the trade and he asked for uniform #37. They tell him he can’t have it, it’s retired. He’s like “you’re kidding right? 37? Who the hell is 37 retired for?” None other than Casey Stengel

Clemens being removed from Game #6 with the lead should have been the story, not Buckner's error given the game was already tied and Mookie might have beaten out of the play anyways... fax!!!
If Buckner makes the play and Mookie is out, the game is tied and the Mets win it in the 11th. The Red Sox had no bullpen and a manager that threw that game away about six times. Same thing with Bob Moose's wild pitch against the Reds in the 72 NLCS. Moose didn't come in with the bases empty and wild pitch in the winning run. Foster was running for Perez who scored a single with nobody out after Bench's famous game tying home run. Menke also singled. Chaney popped out, Geronimo sac-flied and Foster went to third. Hal McRae pinch hit for the pitcher and Moose threw outside in the dirt and Foster scored. Yeah Moose failed to get the third out. Schiraldi and Stanley failed to get the third out what, 5, 6 times? McNamara pulls Clemens and hits Greenwell (oh-fer in the Series), puts in Schiraldi who was his only closer and had pitched in what seemed like every game. Schiraldi does not throw strikes... most important thing for a closer to do. Gets behind on every hitter. Blows the lead, game goes to extras, Sox score 2 in the top of the 10th... and McNamara lets Schiraldi bat!!! That right there was the gamble that his worn out, non-strike throwing closer could get three more outs and that he wasn't going to hit for him and maybe score another run. Then the bottom of the tenth, and Schiraldi gets the first two. Maybe they can pull this off. I was sitting in my basement already writing down all of McNamara's moves, noting that Schiraldi wasn't throwing strikes. Then we all know what happened. At that time I was rooting for the Red Sox - in fact because they had played so well against the Cardinals in 67, and gave my Reds their greatest thrill in 75. I had a lot of respect for them... then. I also hated the Mets. Reds had been involved in some brawls with them that year, including Ray Knight belting Eric Davis for no reason: "he had a mean look, so I popped him". I HATED the Mets! After game 6, I had a whole new respect for the New York Mets... and the National League style of never-give-up baseball. I never pulled for the Red Sox ever again. I hear they snapped their curse (as a frickin wild card of all things) then won again but it's after 94 so I don't care. In 1990 the Reds swept Oakland playing NL style ball especially in the pivotal game 2. When the Reds won that game, the way they did it, I knew it would be a sweep. Anyway - I have rewatched that 1986 game and from the Mets perspective, the only mistake they made IMO was not noticing that Schiraldi was getting behind soon enough. When you need three quick outs to win a world championship, you don't need to be throwing balls. STRIKES.
I'm a Met fan and I don't see them in the top fifty. If you want to amuse yourself, find Bill James breakdown of the 1961 Yankees. They're universally regarded as one of greatest ever. Bill James says they MIGHT be in the top fifty. The piece is in his revised Historical Abstract. He knows most people will continue to see this as one of the greatest teams ever but he makes a great case and I would like SOMEONE to attempt to rebut it. I got no dog in the fight. They were extremely weak at shortstop, both offensively and defensively, and were weak in the field at a number of positions. Considering how deep the farm was then, it is very strange that Cashen didn't bring in a veteran to take over the shortstop position for a couple of years until Elster was ready. Then they brought up Elster way too early, the end of August of 1986, to make him eligible for the postseason roster. Elster kicked the ball around during the World Series, a very nervous 21 year old kid in way over his head. All time teams are usually ranked by virtue of famous names in the lineup, such as Ruth and Gehrig with the 1927 Yankees, and Mantle and Maris in the Bronx 34 years later. It's as if these people never heard of pitching or defense. Those lists are pretty worthless.

I wasn't going to watch game 6, I figured if they lost I didn't want to see and if they won I would watch game 7. Around 10 I couldn't stand it any more. I think they were tied and then Boston went up by 2 runs. It was the 9th, 2 outs, 2 strikes on Gary I think. I got up to turn off the TV and stopped. I had watched them all season long, I was going to watch them to the end. Glad I did. Everybody I knew was hoarse from screaming the next day. I hope every fan from every team has a game like that one.
Oh yeah. 1972 NLCS game 5. The Reds won championships in 75, 76, and 90... but that pennant winning come from behind 9th inning in 72, that was the most exciting thing in my baseball memory. The Mets comeback was even more miraculous and it was to save the Series, not just the pennant. But I hated the Mets then. I don't hate them anymore. Oh yeah, remember the TV guys named Marty Barrett the Series MVP BEFORE THE GAME WAS OVER?? Oooooopsy!!! I want to rewatch the whole 86 series again except pretend I'm a Mets fan. And I remained a steadfast NL fan all the way, until the 94 ruinations and I stopped caring.

I wasn't going to watch game 6, I figured if they lost I didn't want to see and if they won I would watch game 7. Around 10 I couldn't stand it any more. I think they were tied and then Boston went up by 2 runs. It was the 9th, 2 outs, 2 strikes on Gary I think. I got up to turn off the TV and stopped. I had watched them all season long, I was going to watch them to the end. Glad I did. Everybody I knew was hoarse from screaming the next day. I hope every fan from every team has a game like that one.
Oh yeah. 1972 NLCS game 5. The Reds won championships in 75, 76, and 90... but that pennant winning come from behind 9th inning in 72, that was the most exciting thing in my baseball memory. The Mets comeback was even more miraculous and it was to save the Series, not just the pennant. But I hated the Mets then. I don't hate them anymore. Oh yeah, remember the TV guys named Marty Barrett the Series MVP BEFORE THE GAME WAS OVER?? Oooooopsy!!! I want to rewatch the whole 86 series again except pretend I'm a Mets fan. And I remained a steadfast NL fan all the way, until the 94 ruinations and I stopped caring.

Keith couldn't remember anything here. I'm not surprised - players never have this stuff in their heads half as much as the fans do. I mean, Keith forgot that Reds-Red Sox, including the famous Fisk HR, was 1975? He even said that they were down two runs to Boston in Game 7 when Keith drove in two runs in the 6th inning. No, Keith, it was 3-0 Boston, and you made it 3-2. It seems every player is like that though.
