I grew up in Brooklyn watching Doc Gooden and Straw as a lifelong Mets fan!! They were like my brothers. I am proud of him for turning his life around. A well-deserved event for him. Had the honor of meeting him in person in Maryland.
Darrly Strawberry becomes the fifth player of Mr. Burns’ 1992 Springfield Nuclear Power Plant Softball Team to have his number professionally retired, along w/ Don Mattingly, Wade Boggs, Ozzie Smith and Ken Griffey, Jr.
Wish Gary Carter was around to see his good friend Darryl's number being retired and see his life turned around through his faith in God and spreading the Lords message, also doing alot of positive works to help those who are struggling like he went through in life, love Darryl 💙
I’m a grown man, 62 years young. Been a Met fan since 1969. I bled blue and orange for many years. I’m no longer a fan, I no n longer watch, but I’ll be damned if this didn’t make me tear up. Thank you Daryl Strawberry. You were something to watch. That beautiful, fully extended looping left handed swing. What a talent. What a gift.
I was a MASSIVE Mets and Strawberry fan as a kid. I watched every at bat, listened to every game I could. When he left the Mets, I stopped watching baseball for a little while and it took years to reconnect to the team. Glad to see hi back where he belongs. He should never has left. Thanks for the memories.
I had Strawberry posters all over my room. I would run down stairs every moring to look at the box scores in the paper to see how he did. I would record the allstar game on my VCR to see him play since I lived outside of NY and could only watch a handful of Mets games per year. Or I would get to see him play the Braves on TBS every now and again. It was a huge part of my being a kid.
51-year Yankee fan here. I wished well for the Mets when they were doing well, like any New Yorker should and would. He did help the Bombers win two rings in the '90s, which we appreciate, but I will always remember him for 1986. Congrats, Darryl!
He won 3 rings with the Yankees. Like you said he contributed to 2 while the 3rd was when he was diagnosed with cancer and hardly played that last season. He was a great player who was even better in the clutch. Surprised it took this long to retire Doc and Darryl's jerseys.
I loved the Strawman from day 1. He had the sweetest swing, and he was always so cool. It broke my heart as a young kid to see him, Doc and Nails all go through substance abuse. I'm so glad the Mets have brought Doc and Darryl back. It just feels good. Say a prayer for Nails, too.
I remember my family took me to go see Daryl Strawberry when he was sent down to AAA for rehab with the Albuquerque Dukes. The stadium was packed, and every at bat the crowd went wild. He didn't end up doing much, but it's still a vivid childhood memory! Man could definitely draw a crowd!
Growing up in the 1980's in NY Im a Mets fan and my brother is a Yankees fan, there was 4 players we used to idolize, Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden with the Mets and Don Mattingly and Dave Winfield with the Yankees.
Sure was fun watching Darryl step up to the plate on those 80’s Mets teams. He really was an imposing player back then. So good to see him again, in a much deserved event - his jersey retired. 👏🏼
Trivia: Darryl Strawberry played high school baseball for Crenshaw High in Los Angeles. Crenshaw faced Granada Hills High School for the 1979 City Baseball championship. Pitching for Granada Hills was football great John Elway. Granada Hills won the game.
From a Cubs fan, where the Mets were a fierce rival with in the old eastern division, much respect for Daryl. Well deserved, one of the most feared power hitters I’ve ever seen. Great life story. Nice work Straw man.
Great speech. A genuine expression of gratitude and humbleness. Was Straw the greatest position player in Met History? If winning is the yardstick, it's not even close. 1983-1990: Team Record: ...............734-560 (.567) When Straw Started......618-446 (.580) 7 winning seasons (over .500) out of 8 6 seasons with 90+ wins 2 NL East titles 1 WS ring 5 2nd place finishes (no WC in this era) It's not a coincidence that his career spanned the most successful 8 seasons in franchise history. Between 1983-1990, team averaged 92 wins, 70 losses.
10:01 - For him to apologize to the fans for leaving shows a level of character you rarely see in professional athletes. I knew his leaving was a mistake at the time, I'm glad he realizes it now.
As a Yankees fan, I would like to say a big CONGRATULATIONS to Darryl Strawberry!! Back in the 1980s decade, the Mets were one of the most feared teams to play against. One of many reasons for that was because of Darryl Strawberry. Him and Dwight aka "Doc" Gooden were the one two punches....the Dynamic Duo for the team back then. Darryl Strawberry and Doc helped the Mets win a Championship and also helped win two Championships for my Yankees. Way to go Darryl!!
Gary Cohen was right when he said, “Your eyes were riveted to him every time he stepped into the batter’s box.” The sweetest, most fluid swing you’ll ever see. Many like Ken Griffey Jr.’s swing, but Darryl’s was best. His beautiful swing led some to call him the black Ted Williams. Thanks for so many great memories, Darryl.
Strawberry..I mean his name says it all his swing, swagger, his name being called over and over again…favorite Baseball player of all time…I wish nothing but the best..
Strawberry is still a legend he was an amazing player to watch. He has given mets fan years of enjoyment. He was a gifted player for MLB and he is grateful for the people around him.he acknowledged his weakness and temptations had hindered him from obtaining more but the fact he knows and talks about it makes him a star forever.
Damm Strawberry has really turned himself around, glad to see him go thought the changes and make himself the man he is today, a better well rounded human being that today we can be so proud of. Congrats to the Straw man! You deserve it.🍓
As a diehard Phillies fan as a kid… us Philadelphians we’re able to get the WWOR signal and watch some Mets games. Watching him, Doc & Gary Carter tear up the NL East was both bitter sweet and envious. I envy’d the Mets from afar. I am so proud of how Darryl has turned his life around. This was long over due. Take a bow Darryl. 🎉🎉🎉
Darryl Strawberry was such an amazing baseball player and it was such a great time to be a Met fan during his tenure with the team. He truly deserves his number 18 to be retired! 💫⚾️
He didn’t do anything worse then what others in the HOF have done … sportswriters playing god over a person’s enshrinement and the sheep fans like u who back there writers is the reason why he’ll never get in
As a Phillies fanboy, I have witnessed Strawberry play in the early 80s shredding the Phillies apart but I always respected him as one of the greatest players that played the game.
Dude has a story book life filled with the highest of highs and lowest of lows...about time the mets retired his jersey...i think i cried the day he signed with LA...we love you straw man
Such a great Yankee…I’ll never forget the 3 homers he hit in games 4 and 5 in 1996 ALCS against the Orioles and of course that legendary brawl also against the Orioles where he hunted down Benitez. Congrats Straw🍓
Good Lord, MLB!…could you squeeze in any more ads??!! Every 45 seconds another cluster of ads, breaking the mood of the ceremony we’re trying to watch. Squeezing every last nickel and dime out of everything. SMH.
Dude if it doesn't matter if he did cocaine while you were playing baseball I shouldn't matter if you did steroids you should also get your number retired and be walking in the Hall of Fame
I blame him and all the 86 Mets that I've been suffering my entire life as a Mets fan. They won when I was too young (only 4) to appreciate it and my father was a bandwagon frontrunner fan who made me a Mets fan. Me? I've been loyal to them for 41 years while my cousins are all fake Yankees fans that used to wear Strawberry's jersey in the 80's.
Why in the world would Strawberry be Daryl’s last name? I noticed that coming up with a fun last name could be more viral than any other! I know that our friend Strawberry Shortcake is watching this!
Best thing the straw man ever did was to marry that woman from Wisconsin. Huge props to him for keeping his life together. They're going to run out of numbers
I grew up in Brooklyn watching Doc Gooden and Straw as a lifelong Mets fan!! They were like my brothers. I am proud of him for turning his life around. A well-deserved event for him. Had the honor of meeting him in person in Maryland.
That bat Twirl before that swing. A thing of beauty!
Darrly Strawberry becomes the fifth player of Mr. Burns’ 1992 Springfield Nuclear Power Plant Softball Team to have his number professionally retired, along w/ Don Mattingly, Wade Boggs, Ozzie Smith and Ken Griffey, Jr.
One of my favorite episodes
We're talkin SOOOFTBAAALLL ⚾️ 🎶
Wade Boggs could never get those sideburns right. That hippy.
he hit 9 home runs in that game
Lmao fantastic!
I am extremely happy to see this! He was my favorite player when I was younger & still is my favorite player of all time!
Wish Gary Carter was around to see his good friend Darryl's number being retired and see his life turned around through his faith in God and spreading the Lords message, also doing alot of positive works to help those who are struggling like he went through in life, love Darryl 💙

Am not a Met fan and hated him growing up on Long Island in the 80s. That being said, this was long overdue and brought tears to my eyes.
I'm proud of him.....He definitely deserves it!!! Congratulations 🎊👏🏽💐🥳🎊👏🏽.

A great day for us Mets fans! Go Darryl!
Congratulaciones 💪🏽⚾️ Darril
I was there today. Great speech from a great man and a great player.
I saw you
I remember my family took me to go see Daryl Strawberry when he was sent down to AAA for rehab with the Albuquerque Dukes. The stadium was packed, and every at bat the crowd went wild. He didn't end up doing much, but it's still a vivid childhood memory!
Man could definitely draw a crowd!
The best moment imo is when the crowd goes crazy when Darryl hugs Dwight. It's just a really sweet moment.
Congrats! Legend! Lucky enough to have watched you and Doc play and to be there for your number retirements! Well deserved! LGM!
Growing up in the 1980's in NY Im a Mets fan and my brother is a Yankees fan, there was 4 players we used to idolize, Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden with the Mets and Don Mattingly and Dave Winfield with the Yankees.
Seeing 19:48 now when Mets are entering the NLCS makes that moment even cooler
The greatest thing Daryl did was turn his life around so empowering. God bless you Daryl…
One of the greatest to ever play the game. PERIOD!
My favorite athlete Darryl Strawberry.
Sure was fun watching Darryl step up to the plate on those 80’s Mets teams. He really was an imposing player back then. So good to see him again, in a much deserved event - his jersey retired. 👏🏼
I remember when this man was drafted. I'm so thrilled for him.

Great speech. I am glad he survived the chaos in his life and has emerged a better man. And, man, could he hit a baseball!
Great speech. A genuine expression of gratitude and humbleness. Was Straw the greatest position player in Met History? If winning is the yardstick, it's not even close.
1983-1990:
Team Record: ...............734-560 (.567)
When Straw Started......618-446 (.580)
7 winning seasons (over .500) out of 8
6 seasons with 90+ wins
2 NL East titles
1 WS ring
5 2nd place finishes (no WC in this era)
It's not a coincidence that his career spanned the most successful 8 seasons in franchise history. Between 1983-1990, team averaged 92 wins, 70 losses.
Daryl and Doc forever linked. Daryl and Keith is also great to see.
Hernandez should have been in the Hall of Fame a long time ago before a dozen others
Today, I am a proud Mets fan ❤️
10:01 - For him to apologize to the fans for leaving shows a level of character you rarely see in professional athletes. I knew his leaving was a mistake at the time, I'm glad he realizes it now.

And speaking of punches, two more members of the '86 Mets who were feared for that reason were Kevin Mitchell and Ray Knight.
My fav player of all time!!!!
DARRYL DARRYL DARRYL! He was a legend for the Mets.
Hittin bombs off cocaine with doc 😂💯
Daryl strawberry was a Special talent dominated with the ny Mets 🔥

Tremendo pelotero ! Felicidades Darryl !
He was a good player back then when he played in the 1986
Not only 1986 he also won Rookie of the year 1983...and 7x All star for the ny Mets .the entire 1980s he dominated 👍🔥
Yea, how about GREAT player?
Oh…I thought he was a random fan.
Well deserved honor & it's sad shortly after leaving the Mets his career went downhill real quick. Should have hit 500 homers & was on pace to do so.
That man does not age! There must be a portrait of him in his attic.
I remember the brawls with the Phillies and Os he had and the superman punch !
Best speech ever given by a Met! God Bless You Darryl, not for your baseball performance but showing others that you can change your life around!
As a diehard Phillies fan as a kid… us Philadelphians we’re able to get the WWOR signal and watch some Mets games. Congratulations Darryl Happy for you Success
That Hug with Gooden was emotional. Brothers Forever 🥹
As a life-long Dodgers fan, (since the 70s), this is long overdue.
Congrats, Straw!
Darryl Strawberry was such an amazing baseball player and it was such a great time to be a Met fan during his tenure with the team. He truly deserves his number 18 to be retired! 💫⚾️
The best swing in the history of baseball. Thank you Starw man.
Let’s Go D.Straw 🍓☀️
Congrats Darryl #18
even though a Phillies fan I'd would like to say well deserved because you were a baseball talent
This is a great player I watched in the 80s.
Strawberry has made a lot of mistakes, some of which guaranteed he'd never get into the hall of fame, but this is long overdue
He didn’t do anything worse then what others in the HOF have done … sportswriters playing god over a person’s enshrinement and the sheep fans like u who back there writers is the reason why he’ll never get in
Well deserved.. finally 🍓
as a kid he was a star i just saw the tail end of his career but baseball needs more charismatic guys like him again.
Looking great Straw Man.
We still love you!

12:48 19:22 #8 Always 😢
And Mookie always sweet and adorable.
15:06 Ron Darling will always be the definition of class
All these years later, us Mets fans needed to hear Daryl was sorry he left the Mets.
How can he be when he got 3 more rings with the Yankees??
@@ogg-men He didn’t even think about the Yankees he was speaking of leaving for the Dodgers. Also he won two as a Yankee.
Wow. Wow. Wow. What a speech. What a great redemption story.
The after party had to be awesome one more time 😂
As a Phillies fanboy, I have witnessed Strawberry play in the early 80s shredding the Phillies apart but I always respected him as one of the greatest players that played the game.
There was nothing like getting a “Daryl” chant going at Shea.
Dude has a story book life filled with the highest of highs and lowest of lows...about time the mets retired his jersey...i think i cried the day he signed with LA...we love you straw man
Congratulations Darryl on this well deserved and earned honor.
Love,
Your Yankees fans:)
Daaaarrrryyylllll.! Congrats 18
this was lovely
Such a great Yankee…I’ll never forget the 3 homers he hit in games 4 and 5 in 1996 ALCS against the Orioles and of course that legendary brawl also against the Orioles where he hunted down Benitez. Congrats Straw🍓
Awesome he deserves it!!! Strawberry fields forever!!!!!!!
were those all his kids at the end of the line?
This is long overdue. I am glad that the Mets finally did the right thing.
The best hitter in the MLB era '83-'90 .
Good Lord, MLB!…could you squeeze in any more ads??!! Every 45 seconds another cluster of ads, breaking the mood of the ceremony we’re trying to watch. Squeezing every last nickel and dime out of everything. SMH.
TRUTH!!!!!!!! 🤣
Too bad the Mets couldn’t win and make this a classic game
Gee it would have been even better if was interrupted with ads every 30 seconds instead of every two minutes
Dude if it doesn't matter if he did cocaine while you were playing baseball I shouldn't matter if you did steroids you should also get your number retired and be walking in the Hall of Fame
I would have liked to see the intro's of the players. Turned on the radio just before this part started.
If the Mets are such a class organization why did Strawberry and Gooden have to wait for so many years?
I blame him and all the 86 Mets that I've been suffering my entire life as a Mets fan. They won when I was too young (only 4) to appreciate it and my father was a bandwagon frontrunner fan who made me a Mets fan. Me? Why in the world would Strawberry be Daryl’s last name? I noticed that coming up with a fun last name could be more viral than any other! I know that our friend Strawberry Shortcake is watching this!
