PLEASE READ: I just want to take a moment to update you and clarify my position regarding travel in relation to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Being a UK citizen, I consult the UK Foreign Office for advice on where I am travelling and what I may need to be aware of. At the time of writing, the Foreign Office advises against all non-essential travel abroad. In addition, non-essential travel within the UK is currently not permitted. With this in mind I am currently unable to travel and film content. I am lucky to currently have a large (about 6 months worth) of content already filmed so you can still expect a new video every Friday. I do however want to stress that I travelled in line with the advice of the UK Foreign Office where travelling outwith the UK and in line with UK law when travelling domestically at the time of recording. This advice will likely have changed in the time between recording and publishing. With that, I am hopeful that travel will once again be possible in the near future and I hope to get out and about filming again over the summer. Lastly, thank you for your continued support through these strange and difficult times. Stay safe! Kind regards, Dylan.
@@michimedi well its the best price if you go to the airport via the CAT train as you can check in your baggage at the Landstraße Station and you have wifi while on the s7 its a bit of a luck game if you get a unit with wifi on it. We were in Vienna 4 years ago. We took this train to the airport on our way home. It was a good experience. We were able to check out bags( we flew Austrian Airlines). The station was 3 blocks from our hotel in the center of the city. The higher price was well worth the extra Euros.
Reminds me of the airport express train here in Toronto. Also expensive. But comfortable while much cheaper than a cab or limo and far less crowded than the buses. Worth the money in my experience.
The only reason I have found for the CAT is that you are (with some airlines) able to do your check in at Wien Mitte. Except for that, the regular trains (Railjet to Wien HBF) or S-bahn are not much slower, run as frequent and are way cheaper.

I guess "expensive" is relative .. I was in Vienna in Nov 2019 & took the CAT - I didn't think 12 Euro was that much compared to taking a cab [which I did from my hotel back to airport - didn't want to miss my very early morning flight] I believe the cab was 33 Euro plus the tip... In Washington DC you can take Metro only from Reagan Airport and ride cost depends on time of day & distance you are traveling. Metro cars are not so clean and pleasant; standing room only at times. Travel from Dulles is by auto only at this time [one of these years they may actually get the silver line working - but it won't be as fast/efficient/pleasant as CAT. DC has no express train from area airports - including from BWI in Maryland which is sort of embarrassing for the nation's capital!!] … The CAT was clean/fast and after 15 hours of travel from US, it met my need to just get to my hotel. I had no idea there were toilets on board .. good to know for future trips .. thanks for bringing back happy memory of my Vienna visit .. along with new info on CAT :-) .. here's hoping the [censored] lock down gets lifted soon and we can get back to our travels! I look forward to your updates :-)))
Thanks! I guess it really is relative. I know most airports in the US don't have their own mainline railway stations. Last time I flew into Laguardia I had to fork out $50 on a taxi to downtown Manhattan. On the flip side, a Seoul Inchon Airport, you only pay about $6 for their airport express train and it takes over 45 minutes for it to get to the centre of Seoul!
I had a chance to take it the first time I visited Vienna. Subsequent visits I just took S-bahn to Handelskai which was a more direct route, the trains were pretty comfortable too. But 12 Euros for an upper deck seat and a space for your luggage at the racks is still a steal if you are travelling alone.
That is definitely a beautiful train ! If you are a railfan you should try this at least once. Short trip I agree but the scenic scene restroom is worth it !! Thanks Dylan, stay safe.
Sorry I missed the live premier but I have a good excuse. Great video and graphics. Seems like a big success after reading back the live Chat Replay. Cheers, Tim.
Pro Tip for those Austrian Sensors: try placing your hands lower in the wash basin where you’d really put them if you wanted to wash your hands. After spending 15 years on those trains as a frequent traveler I found that that works best. Same goes for some of the automatic doors. It’s become a personal delight to watch people fail at them, waving their hands in front of the sensor in the ceiling when placing your hand on the or in the vicinity of the door handle works perfectly most of the time. 😂
@@andrewdales8136 Andrew, maybe you should go back to the Doctor and get another chest xray. Shortness of breath isn't normal. You're probably more tired than usual, too.
The tap was most likely working. It is a bit special in the way you trigger it though, like on regular ÖBB trains. You need both hands and need to rubb them in the dry for a few seconds until water starts to flow. I think it is impossible to trigger with just one hand. One can argue of course that on a train primarely used by non-locals, this is not a perfect solution. That said, CAT is fine in terms of quality but unless you get it paid by your company and your company doesn't care about paying, few locals are using that train. The 15 min time saving is potentially lost by the 30 min frequency anyway and the slower S-Bahn offers way more stops and goes also further than the CAT. So even for tourists it might be actually faster in the end taking the slow train if the need to get to some central S7 stop. Last but not least CAT costs literally multiple times more than the S-Bahn. The weirdest thing however is if you actually have a hotel at the mainstation (there are a lot of big brand new hotels there nowadays). There is non-stop Railjet conneciton from the airport. It also takes ony around 15 min but costs substantially less than CAT.
So I wouldn't have been able to get the tap to work when filming then. It's a bit of a strange design. If I had done my research and checked ahead then I probably would have taken either Railjet or the S-Bahn. That said, I only had about 1 day of notice that I was going to be in Vienna on this particular day so I didn't really have time to check in advance.
@@DylansTravelReports Well, the CAT, does have some things that go for it though. There is a lot of space and it is never really crowded I think and you can use the luggage check-in at Wien-Mitte for some flights (I think those from Austria Airlines). The railjet is also pretty comfortable but for people who want to get to Wien Hbf or Meidling. The S-Bahn is more crowded but offers many central stops and is the cheapest.
I've used both the CAT and the S-Bahn local service to/from the airport. The CAT is nice, but seems a bit pricey for such a short journey, unless time is of the essence.
I’ve used the S Bahn when doing this route. Slower but just as clean. One thing I noticed was that as the CAT pulled away from the station the pantograph seemed to play a tune. Not sure if this was an intentional design or just the acoustics of Wien Flughofen station.
Flughafen Wien is just 15km from city centre, and with commuter train straight to terminal, I don’t think it makes economic sense as train have high upfront operations cost while this service have less difference to rival. Airport train makes more sense if the airport was >25km from city centre(eg.Narita,KLIA,Arlanda) and it serves straight to destination.
Btw, if you want to review airport railway, don’t miss NEX(ナリタエクスプレスrun from NRT airport straight to multiple popular destination eg:Shinjuku, Shibuya ,Ikebukuro in Tokyo city by JR east) very high value for the train usually straight to hotel, lengthy journeys time due to NRT was very far away from city centres. 1:00 You wrote Wein instead of Wien. Just wanted to point that out real quick. (Also if you go to the airport with the CAT the price is actually really good as you can check in your baggage at the station, The train has wifi while the S7 is always a bit of a mixed bag with the units and its not as full as the S7 especially on weekdays. lol)
The trains that take you from the airport to the city are generally very expensive !!! This is almost the case everywhere. But hey, you are entitled, fortunately, to a good "quality of service" ... Thank you, that changes a little, see you soon Dylan!
Ah I forgot !!! There are even more expensive ones, Dylan. The tram called "Rhône Express" which takes you from the airport / TGV station of Lyon-Saint-Exupéry TGV to the neighboring city or right in the center of Lyon. It is much more expensive and the journey is much shorter ... and it is a tram ... it is like that when it is labeled "airport". I took it once, but not two !!!
Looks like public transport between Airport and City Centre are always expensive. Especially the airport serve international flight. That price is too much, except if this train equipped with public wi-fi or they can reduce the price of the ticket if they give some advertisement slot on interior or exterior (but it can be reduce the value of train's apperance).
Just use the railjet, it costs only €4,20 and takes you to the main station in 15 minutes. Even if you add a 24 hour ticket for Vienna, it's still cheaper than the CAT!
The CAT is one of the reason why living on the 11 district (where basically the CAT runs trough) is considered hard. From the tourist point of view this might be good with 15 intervall for the airport. But from the commuter side is just a torture. A train every 30 minutes in a city is horrible.

The other trains cost 4 times less, and stop in more stations in Vienna, often more convenient. This train is a tourist trap. However it may become popular for Covid19, as a social distancing paradise 🤔
Yes would love to try the Enterprise from Dublin to Belfast. It's a bit of a pain to get to Ireland from where I live (even once this is over) as the only airline that operated the routes were Flybe.
As nice a service as this is, I have to wonder what clientele they're meant to be catering to with that price. Business folk wanting a fast non-stop way into the city center? Bewildered sleep-deprived tourists running in a fugue state looking bewildered for a way to get to their hotel and a bed? Guess which category I fall in?
Nobody should complain about high prices to / from airports until they have stomached the cost at Iceland Reykjavik airport! Taxi or bus .... Ouch, very pricey by any means😀 Verging on scandalous actually....
please stop leaving a mess with the soap in the bathroom. someone has to clean that up. wash your hands properly and let us know if it works. get a chest strap for the go pro or something.
This train is completely not worth it imo, even if you want to go to Mitte rather than any of the other stations the regional train service from ÖBB is only 3 euros (1/4 of the price!), travels more often (given the decent walk between airport ticket shop and platforms, not a bad luxury to have), barely takes longer, and their level of comfort is more than enough for such a short journey, especially because they've been replacing their fleet with brand new cityjet-branded Talent stock. Maybe for a millionaire with time to spare who is afraid of sitting next to people from Vienna's suburbs, the CAT is a nice gimmick. I think they attain most their revenue from fooling tourists into thinking this is the only good train service to the city center, though. If you want to go to the Hbf directly you can even take a railjet, which offers even higher comfort, for 1/3 of the price of this CAT product...
Tbh, if I'd had more time to figure put what train I needed to catch, I wouldn't have taken this train. That said, I still enjoyed it even if the price was a bit steep.

Los Angeles, CA., USA are you paying attention [to this]?
Is the middle row where you go car to car?
It looked clean and roomy. How was the ride quality ? Keep Well..
Ride quality was good. Stay safe!
1 Euro per minute!!
Sorry.... were there nature noises in the washroom to go with that 'scenic' style or was I just imagining things?
You're not imagining it, there genuinely were nature noises!
The other trains cost 4 times less, and stop in more stations in Vienna, often more convenient. This train is a tourist trap. However it may become popular for Covid19, as a social distancing paradise 🤔
Tbh, it's hard to guarantee social distancing on any form of public transport.
Lindo tren mesmo gostei mesmo gostei
CAT? You mean real cats? Meow! JK! Btw nice video
Lol! Thanks!
Protip: Take any other train to Vienna
This train is currently not running because of corona.
Hello Dylan. When Coronavirus is over you should come over to Ireland and do a trip report.Bye
Yes would love to try the Enterprise from Dublin to Belfast. It's a bit of a pain to get to Ireland from where I live (even once this is over) as the only airline that operated the routes were Flybe.
Is this a 55 or 76 cm platform height??
Personally, I think the railjet is better for the price and comfort
Y does the windows look like the same as the tgv coaches
I guess it must have to do with the shape and design of these coaches.
Railjet costs 4,20€, 16 minutes
Vienna is the best city to live in europe. Agree?
Wien Mitte, just outside Vienna's city centre??? Mitte means centre !
Well they should be done for false advertising then 😅
@@DylansTravelReports German is difficult for little UK-fella :) ;)
Can you go in any car any seat?
Yes; there is no reserved seating on this train.
Well I sure fell into the later category!
Well if you say this i will think that you record this video in few month ago before publish
Yep!
Can you do a QnA please amd please wear a face mask
@@epicguy4203 I've got a Q&A coming out Monday.
@@DylansTravelReports okay bro
Nobody should complain about high prices to / from airports until they have stomached the cost at Iceland Reykjavik airport! Taxi or bus .... Ouch, very pricey by any means😀 Verging on scandalous actually....
Same situation at Laguardia. It's either try and figure out what bus you need or spend $50 on a taxi.
@@DylansTravelReports Yes, that is too much. Iceland, a round trip is €44 to €60 on bus depending on service. Taxi, don't ask.
Wow, that is expensive!
please stop leaving a mess with the soap in the bathroom. someone has to clean that up. wash your hands properly and let us know if it works. get a chest strap for the go pro or something.
Don't worry, I clean it up off camera.
€12 isn't expensive. That's only €1.33 per minute. What's disgusting is the horrible lime green paint used. Awful!!!
If I'm honest, I don't hate the lime green.
