Lyrics:
It's the same thing night on night
Who's wrong, baby? Who's right?
Another fight and I slam the door on
Another battle in our dirty little war
When I look at myself I don't see
The man I wanted to be
Somewhere along the line I slipped off track
I'm caught movin' one step up and two steps back
#BruceSpringsteen #OneStepUp #TunnelofLove #OfficialVideo #ClassicRock
64 and still listening.

I'm only 40 an I just love his music 🎶. It's ageless. He's legendary.
One step up, off drugs....2steps back, back on drugs.....Not the Man I wanted to be. This song helped incredibly. 2 Years clean. :)
Two years off vodka for me. I do miss the beer though. Oh well, still a much better man for it.
Proud of you, brother.
AMEN. KEEP SWINGING BROTHER!!!
keep doing you
What can we say
The Boss
This song really touches the saddest parts of human life and culture. Disappointment, rejection, addiction, self-pity, regret…..it’s all there and we’ve all felt some of it. That why this song is so good. It uses music which opens us up to emotional reaction then kicks our ass with lyrics that we all could have written on a bad day. Nice job Bruce.
Pretty sure he was feeling the loss and failure of his first marriage when he wrote it. I may be wrong but I doubt it.
You are Correct… what I am most amazed by… is the fact after almost 40 years later…. People are her discussing this song and album… shows the power of Bruce and the impact he had on people’s lives ❤️
I think you nailed it
Well said my friend
I love Bruce he is real to the core.
“Last night I dreamed I held you in my arms- the music was never ending- We danced as the evening sky faded to black…. One step up & two steps back.” Maybe the most relatable and beautiful lyric about missing someone and dreaming of their presence
Perfect Word Play
Orrrrr the music never ending meaning it was the woman who played in his band and who he eventually married.
“You can’t really appreciate the Boss until life has kicked you around a bit.”
A comment on another Bruce vid.
Facts.
Same comment , but still
"...that's a fact"
@@yelizaveta1278 Very Nice!! 🫡
Ain't that the truth!
fact, you only get him after some pain and experience in life.
The worst lies are the ones we tell ourselves.
Will never stop loving this song 2024❤
Class , pure class
This is another great example of Springsteens incredible songwriting. A song like this can take you back in time.
I think the Boss has two kinds of fans: those that love him for his epic energy on stage and those that listen to his lyrics and know he is one of the finest poets that ever lived.
I think there's a third kind that appreciates both the rocker and the poet.
You're both right I listen for all three!
U make a good point. I'm 54. When I was younger, it was the rock vibe. Now it's the poet vibe. Either way, he gets ya! I love him.
@@staceycornelius8220 I was born in 1999. When he realized Born To Run (1975) my father was just 5 years old. I'm from Argentina, so.. i never could see him live, but i watch every possible video. I love him, is my idol. And i love him as rocker and as a poet.
Really fell said Laura and for guys that Love Bruce ...I am 71 years old ... WE would follow him in to BATTLE .... literally .... a LEADER with Dignity .... and a moral compass ....
I am Japanese born in Japan. I get to know America and Americans through him, and through that I get to know Japan deeply. Thank you Boss.

Great Taste in Music ❤️…. Music… Humanity’s Greatest Creation
That's the best way.
Sugoi. 👍
Music is universal
Heart breaking, true and hauntingly beautiful. IMHO, one of Springsteen's best.
So very well said.
One of the best storyteller song writers ever.
I agree
Great song from a brilliant album and my favourite artist. 1987 I miss you 😢
Bruce Springsteen is a master storyteller and lyrical genius 👏
What 1987 so do I. I fell in love
A song about the imperfection of every life.
Born in 1970. Liked the tune as a senior in high school but only saw and felt the depth of this years and years later. I can only imagine how this must have hit home to a man 30-50 years old in 1987. It’s amazing how time changes our perspective.
Yes… 69 years old now… welcome to to having the strength and love to make a relationship work ❤️. His lyrics speak to life
@@jamesgannon6192
Or maybe the acceptance of your own shortcomings as a man and an acceptance of your sins. Anyone can write a song about love lost by the failings of another but this song speaks to his own failure and where he fell short in his own expectations of himself. There can be regret for love lost but it doesn’t hurt near as much or cut near as deep as love lost due to your own bad decisions or fault. He did it to himself. It will haunt him. The lyric I didn’t hear at 17 but I hear and feel at 53.
Yes he owned his mistakes… the tunnel of love is an undiscovered masterpiece for many Bruce fans. To me the important thing is to understand your flaws and try to make yourself better. And if the person who Really Loves You and knows that you are Trying… Then there’s Always Hope ❤️
I was born in 1988,my father was listening to this when he was 27 in 1987
Age and Wisdom comes with Experience ❤️. Amen 🙏
When I was in my 20s I thought this was just a cool song but now I’m 60 and it takes on a whole new meaning, haunting actually
So true, his best tune I think anyway.
Very haunting indeed 💔🎶✌🏻
This song is epic it reminds me of how things were and now it brings me great memories but I do get a tear in my eyes I am 63 wow luv this have a great day
It really hits home and I wonder if I missed my chance at happiness and a loving husband!
Most people will never admit they made a mockery of their marriage but Bruce owns it. Not sure to think little of him or respect him.
My favorite Springsteen song, love the ending. Human Touch is right there at the top for me.
and brilliant disguise
I like glory days and the river, I’m on fire and thunder road
This is so painfully beautiful. Just a masterpiece of heartache and doubt when the love of your life breaks your heart.
This IS my absolute favorite song by Bruce. He sings it with true experience. He really exposed his heart on this one. Everytime I hear it, I have to replay it 3 or 4 times.
I think he ended up with the right woman in the end.
@@ana1sninja, I have to agree with you on that one. But man! This song has the same effect on me whenever I hear ABBA's,; "The Winner Takes it Akl"...straight through the heart with emotion.
100%
Yes same here
Love You Bruce 💘😻🇧🇷🎸🎤💘💯🔥
One of his finest songs. Very underrated album. He’s surely one of the most brutaly honest songwriters regarding himself and his failings.
“I’m the same old story same old act….
…When i look at myself I don’t see
The man i wanted to be.
Somewhere along the line i slipped off track.”
I'd be honored if some Springsteen fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal YT performance DANCING IN THE DARK in tribute to Bruce's biggest world-wide hit. Live acoustic with no autotune. Peace and stay safe in the '020s.
This is one of those songs that comes on the radio when you're driving between Albuquerque and Amarillo at 2 am and you're the only one awake and it throws so many memories into your mind, its gut wrenching and pleasant at the same time.
Been there and done that, right around Clovis.
Yes
Know exactly what you mean
I can can picture this so well
Pull over and take a nap !!
one of the best Springsteen songs of all time.
I love this song and his music and i miss the 80s those were the good old days
One of his greatest songs. So heartbreakingly haunting.
Andrew McClenning The production was spot on. I dug this album... Love his old stuff too. He's a great artist.
Yes this...
most heartbreaking video of his, you can "feel" the pain..hence why he is The Boss
I certainly do keep making the same mistakes even when I try not to
A song to his kids . . . and a selfie.
This song has always been devastating. I could feel the raw pain in it even when I was a kid. The music is hauntingly beautiful and it's a masterpiece that's classy and down to earth at the same time. At the end when there's just a wall of sound and his voice harmonizing I just wish it went on forever.
It does go on forever, been the story of my life from being a teenager, and nothing has changed, although these days it's more like 3 steps back! I'll be listening to it until, well, I hope they have Massive speakers in heaven.
Hello beautiful heather
Stripper bar? That's classy? Lol....I loved the finger picking on the guitar- it's hypnotic. Our boy Bruce got down from hero mountain to join the rest of us. He fell in love and he couldn't make it work. He became human, that's why "One Step" resonates so strong..Cause this time he wasn't observing, he was in it. It's all over his face in the video, he won't even look directly at the camera. I would sit in the bar, meeting women, having a great time, drinking beer from a glass shaped like a boot. But I was still getting over her three years down the line. I had some tragic romantic vibe going that the women liked. You get over it, you have to. But it marks you, I'm sure Bruce Springsteen would agree with that. "One Step up and two steps back."

35 years ago, this song was written.
Me lo ricordo bene.

I cant describe how hauntingly beautiful this song is.
+Paul Tortora so true...any of us who have failed or 'trapped'
marriages...can feel the incredible sadness
LA LA Lira liquid
You can tell this whole time was a painful experience to him. He felt trapped in a marriage where his partner was from a completely different background, another world, and they couldn't find common ground. But at least he found happiness not too long after this. :)
I know. I feel myself reacting to it. I know it's supposed to be a sad song, but all I feel is love. (sappy, I know, never said that about a song)
ME TO... AND I M ITALIANO!!!!!!1111111111
one of the best song ever written.
One of the saddest (and most beautiful) records ever made--it never fails to hit me right where it counts!
Kidd Oldman same here
Beautiful song about relationships that don't always go how we planned x
Bruce has a habit of hitting me in the feels, moonlight motel gets me every time
Think it's more that it becomes true as you age and realize time just blew by.
Preach it.
As soon as it doesn’t “hit me right where it counts”, it’s time to end.
Nostalgic. Appreciate those that came in your life and left. Both good and bad . And cherished the ones that are still here. One of the best songs ever. ❤
My brother Wally played with Bruce Springsteen..he played the electric steel guitar..unfortunately lost my brother to colon cancer..8/2024…missing you brother
M so sorry for ur loss! RIP your brother. God bless you all!
I just turned 43 ...feeling older now for sure...have lost members of my family in the past few years...seems like life has just started to wilt sometimes but I am just now starting to truely discover Bruce's catalogue and am now at a place in my life where I can connect to it ...I've always appreciated Bruce growing up but wasn't mature enough to relate .
My life is different now and this music is deep and soulful.
God bless
Yes!!! W are probably close to the same age and I get it. I think it comes to us all in our mid 40s.
@@veronicapalmer1828Or maybe later.
Only 43…you have many good years ahead of you.
Welcome to life and the appreciation of what has past already! Bruce is the best companion to have for the journey! I was 18 when this came out ❤
Beautiful song.
June 2024...be 70 in a couple of weeks...this song could be a story of a few chapters of my life...just great...memories, some good some not so good...story of life...for many of us these days.
I hear ya! The album, Tunnel of Love has some deep tracks. One track in particular that speaks to me is; Two Faces.
One of the most honest and bravest song's ever.
Definitely, a man admitting he was cheating while still married. It's life... What I didn't like about this album was Two Faces Have I, where he tries to blame some sort of other man, his bad version, on his cheating. At least that is how it comes across.
@blair Macdonald copy that 10-4
Absolutely Blair! Btw What d'you think of this one? th-cam.com/video/1b85V2p4puw/w-d-xo.html&list=PLWehun4PmMf_00nsBZDretT5gHW_zhBeb
" when I look at myself-I don't see the man I wanted to be" says alot ..great lyrics but what else do you expect...musical genius
Not a huge Bruce fan, but this is without a doubt one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. I was 19 when it came out and all these years later it still packs an emotional punch like so few songs can.
HE DIDN'T WRITE IT!!! IT'S A COVER FROM THE DESERT ROSE BAND!!! ALTHO I LOVE HIS RENDITION...❤

You're feeling it. Good for you. Which means you're a good human being.
I’m not either but this is beautiful
Talked to this girl back in high school. Would head to her house late at night on cold November nights. Rain or clear, would always drive to her house with this song playing in my 2000 ford ranger. Can’t listen to this anymore without thinking of my life during that time… the time when life was simple.
When I look at myself I don't see the kind of man I wanted to be! Saddest line in any song ever!
I feel every letter of every word of this song
♥️♥️♥️
Yeah I no that pain
And we call it .....
I m a music gal send me ur best
One of my favorite Bruce songs. The “Tunnel of Love” album documented the breakup of his first marriage. It always amazes me how a good songwriter can take something as personal as the break-up of a marriage, and put it on a kind of “universal” feel to it, that anyone can relate to.
Last night I dreamed I held you in my arms,
The music was never ending,
We danced as the evening sky faded to black
One step up, two steps back
I have a close friend that is a musician with songs that some big bands have used and he always told me the best song writing done is when someone is in pain. Fleetwood Mac did it as well. Bruce no doubt is one of the best lyrics writers out there. Him, Tom Petty, Stevie nicks just gold.
@@kevintate768 Different feel, but love him just as much, Phil Collins is another, in my opinion. Bob Seger, also my opinion, is the best song writer/lyricist of all time, but his are generally "upbeatish". Love mellencamp as well.
Ok I’m officially in love.
One of my favorite albums as well. Listened to it endlessly during the breakup of my marriage, contemplating how my life would end up raising a child on my own.
I always thought it was his way to say sorry to her for the breakup.
"when i look at myself i dont see the man i wanted to be, somewhere along the line i slipped off track" damn that lyric always hits hard.
Nicholas Chester You’re Not Alone Brother!
And we all call it .....
A lot of us...
Especially when you’ve felt that way before
I like " there's a girl across the bar, get the message she's sending" and "another battle in our dirty little war." No fucking way you can write that without living it.
Simply the Boss. Can't praise him enough. He changed my life.
Melancholy moments. Reminiscing on the past. Questions of your self. Past self. Future self. The relationships in your life. Fuck man. Bruce tells the story of what we all go through. Love. Loss. Hard times. Dreams. Where its at.
You have described it perfectly. Top Man.
You got it man
spot on mate
We gotta' live in the present in the end....it's all we have.....So Bruce's character is dwelling on the past too much, as we all seem to tend to do....but what's the use? Learn the lesson and go quick back to the NOW and LIVE NOW....
Yes!
The brilliance in this video is unsurpassed. At one moment he looks young at another point he looks older with the weight of the world on his shoulders. ..They dont make videos like this anymore but it transcends time. Makes more sense every year.
im same old story.. 1 step up 2 steps back.. becareful you put in your life..most dont deserve to be there!
63 yrs old. I was 12 when I saw him at a college in Maryland. Fell in love with him then still in love with him now. He has been a constant.
I’m a guy in my early 20’s and lots of people my age listen to modern music with no substance. I’m happy I can appreciate this song, amazing
I’m happy you can too! His music is universal.
Wow. what a shame. But you're correct !!!
I’m 26 and you are not alone … such a beautiful song.. so simple but hits home every time …

I'm 22. Been listening to the Boss since I was a teenager. 💕
The most beautiful man of all time.
Like this song after 5 or 6 beers on my deck sitting in the summer warmth thinking of my younger life.
The best, the truth ,we all been there and still going!
This song was beautifully written, when it first came out I really liked it. Now I understand the lyrics so much better, life has taught me so many lessons.
So true Cindy.... :)
Amen Cindy
Truth
Absolutely
Agree. I remember loving this song as a teenager but not appreciating the meaning, and the subtleness and skill of his lyrics until adulthood.
Jesus, how good can this man get. Complete lyrical genius. Strips everything back to bare basics yet makes the mind click into overdrive about what happened, what will and what can.
The 'Tunnel of Love' album saved my life.My marriage broke up and One Step Up and Valentines Day pulled me out of the depths of despair. Truly love the entire album.
Best Country Song EVER
The emotional sucker punch, I need sometimes. This is a masterpiece.
BUUUUUT, is it a "sucker punch" if you're looking it up? Lol I'm just being a smartass, I get it....especially the "I don't see, the man I wanted to be", God that stings sometimes.

Out of the many songs Bruce has this has to be my favorite. I just don't know why but for some reason it just hits me right in the heart 💔
Probably because we all have been there!!! At one time or another!! Peace be with you my friend. Montana Rick.
Always great to be reminded of Bruce's song writing talent. This is an often overlooked and bittersweet song

It doesn't matter how many times you fell down.what really matters how many times you pick your self up
Saw Dr. Springsteen, in Kalamazoo, Michigan years ago all by himself at Miller auditorium on Western Michigan University Campus. He mesmerized all in attendance, some things you can't unsee or hear, I'm glad, it kicked butt. Bruce, is a genius.

One of my favourite songs of all time. Haunting.
In March of 1988, I first listened to this album (cassette tape)I had bought on my way home from being overseas. I took a lonesome greyhound bus from Camp Lejuene North Carolina to Jacksonville Florida to see my daughter for the first time. She was a few weeks old and had been born
while on the return trip across the Atlantic ocean while onboard the USS
Shreveport LPD-12. I bought this cassette tape to listen to on my way to Florida. March 1988 I was just a young man then. Such memories. God
bless you Bruce.
A Beautiful Memory… Hope you are all doing well ❤️
A soothing song to the wound of the soul. Simply beautiful and real
The very last part always seems to bring me to tears. It feels like two wounded souls who have hurt each other so much yet still love each other.
So true see my comment above
yeah, this song strikes a nerve, timeless, haunting, reflective and beautiful
This is just the best song ever. I especially like that low note right after he says, ‘held you in my arms’ and right before, ‘the music was never ending...’. For some reason I can’t explain it hits me like nothing else ever has.
me too totally understand its beautiful
This song is sad, sad, sad. But it don't make me feel sad. It's too godamn beautiful for that.
Wow, I soooo get this comment. Sometimes that certain note will just make your heart catch...
It's how Bruce goes from the situation at hand- sitting in the titty bar, to the situation at home- "another battle in our dirty little war." Marital un-bliss. Back and forth with the setting. He's gonna cheat, that's obvious. She might already be cheating. Oh man! Wonder if he's at the following her around stage....I haven't heard a song with this much pathos since the Eagles "Lying Eyes."
@@brianmallen8887 Agreed.
I guess we owe a failed relationship for bringing us a fantastic album - Tunnel of Love, 1987
So true...
Pain and love are a real inspiration for poetry and musical lyrics.
I remember meeting bruce at villa park in the 80s and telling him how much I loved this track and he also said that it was one very very special song that was close to his heart. thanks bruce for spending time with me that day at villa park!!!
johnyasmin13 You spent time with Bruce? You are my hero, as is he. He is also one of my prophets.

To me, this is his absolute best song. I love it so much but it rips your heart out. It’s perfection.
This song brings tears. To my eyes. I break down when i heard this song
The boss has brilliant lines like a brilliant disguise
The guy he says hello to when he walks in the bar passed away in Bradley beach where I was a police officer at the time. Right next to Asbury park. We had to find a next of kin and during our search I found a newspaper article hanging up that talked about how he was in this video! After we located his family I put this video on TH-cam and we all noticed his face and thought it was awesome. I hope hes resting in peace. He was a good guy.
Jay Gee Great story, Jay. Thanks for sharing it. He looks like a good guy. Take care, buddy!
Sir your a good one!
Hey jayyyee wow incredible story I'm going to see bruce next mon April 15th Albany NY MPV arena he's changed my life I'm not the same Eric I was 5 years ago and yes asbury park coming down this summer on NJ TRANSIT RAILROAD!
I was 29. Helping to build a home on Nantucket through the winter. I brought my guitar to pass the long nights. Old timer took me aside and taught me the art of performing a song at the bar for a bunch of lost souls. This was the song he taught me.
He chose exactly the right song.
The story of my life!
To many heartbreaking moments & wished I had of made better decisions .......& hope your living days & its taken awhile to find peace in my life & bruces music always sends better messages
Brings back memories of when I was in Manitowoc Wisconsin for my cousin Dennis Boehmers wedding.
We were out on a jetty on Lake Michigan. I remember looking out into the night and back at Manitowoc. All the while this song went through my mind. Glory Days
Nils Lofgren’s guitar work here, gives it a spooky quality that just seals this song for me, in the best way. Nils is a one of the most underrated guitarists in my opinion. Growing up in the 80’s I’ve always been a Bruce fan, but listening to his music 35 - 40 years later just makes me appreciate it that much more.
..and Patti's haunting vocals
Bruce played all the parts only Patti sang back up no other E street members played on this recording.
Bruce on the guitar as well as every other instrument
Nils Lofgren - greatest feel player of all time

If I need to have a cry about my marriage this has always been the song for it. I can't imagine anyone married or who's been married who can't relate to this song. I also think the song and video are positively brilliant and there's a wonderful and human tenderness to it. Bruce Springsteen
Springsteen knows how to write a song. The dude is bloody brilliant. Tunnel of Love is an album to cherish.

The finest album ever written in my opinion.
His number one in my opinion, Born to Run.......not even close
yes.....
Such a great album!
I remember his first wife. She was very beautiful. But the two of them always seemed so miserable. This song was written from his truth.
This song probably makes me feel more sad than any other song in existence... I have cried many tears over this song...💔
Me too.
Springsteen can make a Grown Man Cry
🔂 Repeatedly
Over Many Moons
Me too.
I hope that you find your one true soulmate.
It always gets me too
only when you have gone through a break up of a marriage can you begin to undetstand the true genius of this most underated song.
I can only guess at the pain
No, you do not have to make empirical science out of it. I was hardly 13, no pubis, when the album was published and allow myself to testify, sir, today, 30 years later, I understood and felt each and every fucking single letter Springsteen has written. He lead me to literature, arts und philosophy and is stll a basal inspriration for my work although I am not into music...

There are so many reasons I love this song AND video; a real depiction of the human condition involving loneliness, sadness & yearning for happiness...........
