It's a real shame that this is practically one of the only things that Sonic CD is known about, because it's actually a really good game and one of the most underrated classic Sonic games imo.
So, I've played Sonic CD. It's right below Mania as my second-favorite 2D Sonic game. I remember this easter egg being touted around, along with the "I"m outta here!" as the only discussion of Sonic CD on the internet. Then a lot of people got access to the game via rerelease, and said that it was not good, which I understand their reasoning of. But they also said that people used to always tout the game as a hidden masterpiece, and then they attributed those claims to the fact the game was hard to properly play. Basically what I'm wondering is, did people on the early internet really tout Sonic CD as a hidden gem masterpiece? Or is that more of a post hoc thing?
@@delasanta4369 Mazin actually had the JP soundtrack, so when he was putting this together the background music was “Work that sucker to death, come on now! Work that sucker to death!”

0:38 That music was actually in a regular sonic level, although I don't remember the game itself. When I was about 5, I remember just pausing the game to listen to that creepy-ass music, it made me curious.
It says, in English, "Fun Is Infinite - Sega Enterprises" and in the bottom right corner, I'm pretty sure it says it was signed by the Devil. I think this screen was supposed to appear if anyone tried to hack / pirate the game, and would hopefully scare them so much they'd stop.
The word means "Devil" and is there simply because it was one of the developers' nicknames when he was a child. It's more like "Little Devil" than "Satan."
The Smart-Casual Gamer. in japan they write things in hiragana alphabet instead of the simplified kanji (really complex characters) so that the children can understand words easier at a younger age, so yeah i agree it probably means something like little devil or something and relating to one of the developer’s nicknames. its still a damn creepy popup to see on a pirated version of the game though.
If I were to just accidentally trigger this at night without my light on, I would be probably change to source ASAP so I could watch youtube instead. Then unplug that console for 8 hours and act like it never happened. (Yeah and turn my light on)
***** It’s “majin” actually. It uses unorthodox characters in Japanese, but when translated it’s impossible to portray that. It’s majin, but it’s not the majin of “demon”. It’s still pronounced the same way though, so if you were to just hear it without looking at the Japanese characters you could confuse it for “demon”.
abcdefghilihgfedcba no its madin, he confirmed it. hopefully this will help legendsoflocalization.com/qa-whats-the-deal-with-that-creepy-sonic-cd-secret/
When I first saw a video of this I was so terrified, that I was having a completely normal dream and then this screen just appeared in my dream, like this was my entire field of view, it scared me awake
One of my childhood friends had a negative experience with this when he was a kid. He was playing Sonic CD on his father's phone and decided to search for cheat codes online. He was using the US soundtrack and managed to unlock the sound test feature on the sound test screen he entered the numbers '12 25' as a cheat code. Suddenly, a message appeared on the screen, he said it looked like a sonic wearing a hacker mask and containing Japanese text. Curious, he took a screenshot and used Google Translate to decipher the message, which translated to "Fun is infinite ♾ Majin Picture." Years later, I tried the same code on the Japanese soundtrack while playing the mobile version on my school Chromebook. However, instead of the expected result, it played the upbeat boss JP theme called "Work That Sucker to Death." My theory is that the code was intended to convey a Christmas message since the numbers correspond to December 25th (12 25). Nevertheless, that's the story.
I grew up with the European/Japanese version of this game. When I first heard about this Easter egg, I honestly didn't know the music was the boss theme from the American version. I thought it was just creepy music to go with the creepy Easter egg.
One day, a 9 year old is going to say this was stolen from Friday Night Funkin. And exactly 5 seconds after that moment, the head of a 9 year old will land in someone’s yard.
“Fun is Infinite”-Sega Enterprises Picture by Madzin (Note: “Madzin,” a misspelling of “Majin,” is the childhood nickname of Masato Nishimura, the game’s landscape designer.)

Mazin refers to Masato Nishimura. He is an artist who worked on the game and also provided Sonic's voice lines ("I'm outta here!" "Yes!").

Unless you're Sega CD/Mega CD is Japanese or PAL, then it's not so bad

That music was actually in a regular sonic level, although I don't remember the game itself.
When I was about 5, I remember just pausing the game to listen to that creepy-ass music, it made me curious.
It was the US boss theme
It appears at the Metal Sonic stage too , I remember when a day I was playing Sonic CD and I was scared as shit by the Metal Sonic Level
It says "Madin" one of the game developers that made this screen
FOR THE LAST TİME İTS NOT MAJİN İTS MADİN A GAME DEV WHO HELPED MAKİNG SONİC
It si signed "madin" who is actually a game developer there. It is spelled as madin, ( にじん) not "maijin"

Imagine just seeing this at night, hearing that sound at the beginning, and then realizing that everything is now totally fine.
Imagine this music playing faintly downstairs in your kitchen while pots and pans and loud clatters can be heard in the kitchen
Every kid: *laying on the floor crying*
Asian kids: YoOoOo this beat go hard

If I were to just accidentally trigger this at night without my light on, I would be probably change to source ASAP so I could watch youtube instead. Then unplug that console for 8 hours and act like it never happened. (Yeah and turn my light on)
@@rightfalse5856 so your telling me you’d watch TH-cam in the 2004
If you even could
Fun is infinite

Majin
Thx for translating!
Darth Gabriel
its Madin, its masato nishimura, the platform designer for sonic, childhood nickname.
On the screen it says Majin, but the guy who put it there is Madin.
***** It’s “majin” actually. It uses unorthodox characters in Japanese, but when translated it’s impossible to portray that. It’s majin, but it’s not the majin of “demon”. It’s still pronounced the same way though, so if you were to just hear it without looking at the Japanese characters you could confuse it for “demon”.
abcdefghilihgfedcba
no its madin, he confirmed it.

When I first saw a video of this I was so terrified, that I was having a completely normal dream and then this screen just appeared in my dream, like this was my entire field of view, it scared me awake
BOO!
Along with the eerie music and the messed up sonic in the background makes this scary as hell
American kid: *stays completely still, while a chill goes down their spine, paralyzed in fear*
Japanese kid: *nodding to the beat*
I remember finding this as a child and it's still creepy as hell
Damn
I feel so bad
