Hey Seth, I'd really enjoy seeing Pioneer added into the normal Much Abrew and Budget Magic rotation in addition to standard and modern going forward. Didn't know if that was the plan already or if this was a test video for maybe doing that but figured i'd offer my feedback if that's worth anything
One thing I might change about this deck is switch out Treasure Cruise with Bedlam Reveler. You’re playing them at around the same part of the game, when you’re out of cards and trying to reload, and Reveler leaves another big body in play.
slip through space has to be better than warlord's fury right? Sneak the win with unblockable was how I'd always win with standard prowess (when Soul scar and stormchaser were in the same standard)
Im not convinced. If your opponent is low than slip through is better than warlords since it's potentially more damage. If there are no opposing creatures they are equally bad. If it's a board stall slip through seems better still. Trying to envision the scenario Two arguments against slip through: empty board can't cantrip. Potentially makes mana base shaky (which I don't really believe to be the case)
I think serious consideration needs to be given to the fact that all the one drops are red and the majority of spells are red. Especially in this budget build, the fact that it's a red spell makes the mana base work better, as you can play more mountains and more consistently be able to play Swiftspear or SSM Turn 1.
at 12:18 I think you could swing with the monastery swiftspear to try to bait oppo to block with their ensouled darksteel citadel, then shocked it. It shrinks to a 3/3 and the swiftspear grows to a 3/4. Great video as always though!!
Minor punt in match 3 game 2, you casted crash through to draw a card and got lucky and hit swiftspear for the win, but your opponent was at 7 and you had 7 damage in burn spells with the mana to cast them
I think the delve cards will be more balanced without a saturation of fetch lands in the format. Only playing the format will tell if they're still strong.
Yeah, in Pioneer they play more like they did in Standard. You either need to build around them by filling your graveyard or they often end up expensive.
Standard didn't have the amount of 1-mana draw spells we got in pioneer. Obviously you Need to build around the Delve Cards, but that doesn't seems to be too hard to accomplish. I'm playing a pioneer Version of UR Delve(r) with Young pyromancers. It's Incredible easy to create 1/1s + fill your graveyard at the same time. In this deck TC is just a top deck that Pretty much wins you the game every time. And as i said - there are tons of Cards to come - if Wizards didn't see hogaak with dredge as a Problem they'll for sure not see another future Card as a Problem with any of the Delve cards. If DTT + TC aren't banworthy yet they'll be for sure in future.
0:57 this is why I'm confused as to why you would dive into pioneer budget magic. If you're going to have to play cards that are likely to get banned in the future, why buy into it if you're trying to do so on a budget.
Get what you’re saying, kinda violates the spirit of budget in this unique scenario where in a new format has cards legal that are banned elsewhere. That said it’s like 80 cents for a play set of treasure cove so not like you get burned. the main concern is around how well the deck would function if it was banned and if banning 80 cents worth of cards invalidates up to $100 of other cards. Who knows?
I mean, Treasure Cruise is a bulk card and it is replaceable by other cheap cards (Bedlam Reveler, Light up the Stage), so I don't think bannings are really that big of a concern for the deck.
MTGGoldfish we there ya go! In those cases case I don’t see an issue with using a “ban-likely” card when the playset is so cheap (less than a dollar here).
@@kaszael personally i would have run soul scar mage storm chaser mage and adeliz then 4 of wizards retort and wizards lightning then build out from there
@@OuterCraft for some reason, I read "other wizards" so that is true. It does not make a difference in this deck but prowess triggers off any non-creature spell whereas Adeliz triggers only off of instants and sorceries.
Very nice deck. Would you consider changing 2 Cruise for 2 Bedlam Reveler? Because it can be very difficult to fill tue grave for several Cruises. In this way, Reveler may help you filling the grave, it can refill your hand itself and increase your number of prowess threats. So, maybe a 2/2 split of those high end cards could be sweet.
Just want to point out that at 26:30 he complains about the flood with 10 lands and 33 cards in deck. He’s playing 20 lands and went through half his deck. That’s how math works. In a low to the ground deck with cantrips you should not be playing 20 lands. In my mono red prowess list I’m running 18.
Is that a big at 14:22 ? Why does the hangarback make a thopter? Shouldn’t the soul scar mage put a -1/-1 counter on it which by the new rules cancels the +1/+1 counter, so shouldn’t it die with zero +1/+1 counters and not make a thopter?
Update: MODO was correct😂. The game cares about the last state the the hangarback was in before it resolved when it checks the death trigger and before the wizards lightning resolved, it had 1 counter. So yeah... Magic is hard
14:19 Wait, shouldn't Soulscar Mage's replacement effect have had taken on and put 3 -1/-1 counters on Hangarback, resulting in no Thopters? Looks like MOTO bugs again.
I retroactively forgot that the first thopter got shocked and assumed it was leftover from the previous hangarback. Cause I thought it should have 0 counters when it dies too. Are we missing something? I still remember the eventide rules text cards comparing +1 and -1 counters to matter and anti-matter. That just seemed like an unnecessary metaphor back then.
14:18 why did that hangerback walker make a token. I was under the impression he would have 2 -1 counters through soul-scar. Die to state based actions then get 0 thopters cause no + counters on it
I wondered about this too and here's the relevant ruling I found about it. 704.7. If a state-based action results in a permanent leaving the battlefield at the same time other state-based actions were performed, that permanent’s last known information is derived from the game state before any of those state-based actions were performed. Example: You control Young Wolf, a 1/1 creature with undying, and it has a +1/+1 counter on it. A spell puts three -1/-1 counters on Young Wolf. Before state-based actions are performed, Young Wolf has one +1/+1 counter and three -1/-1 counters on it. After state-based actions are performed, Young Wolf is in the graveyard. When it was last on the battlefield, it had a +1/+1 counter on it, so undying will not trigger.
Any chance of adding one or two copies of Mission Briefing looking for copies 5 and 6 of treasure cruise? It certainly can be clunky, but it also helps with filtering and filling the graveyard. I'm thinking two copies is too much, but one copy would probably work? Or Flip Jace, but then the budget would go though the roof.
Hmm, Mission Briefing sounds fun, assuming we can use it before we exile our graveyard to Treasure Cruise. Not sure about flip Jace, I think it's very powerful in Pioneer, but might be a bit slow for what UR Prowess is doing.
i wonder, do you think you could modify this deck into an izzet wizards list? i had an adeliz deck way back in dominaria standard that was super fun (but also super fragile) that ran all prowess wizards to double trigger with the adeliz buff. i was considering light up the stage, but treasure cruise seems way better.
so there is a spell in origins that is R: discard a land as an additional coast, draw 2 cards. the number of times i see you stall out because of lands is nuts, plus this would help fuel treasure cruise.
My initial build of the deck was more Wizards focused with four Adeliz, but it felt pretty clunky compared to the more prowess focused build. I think it can work, but I think just focusing on prowess is more competitive.
Thanks for the response! I've been very slowly putting together an Adeliz deck for modern since I saw the Thunderous Wizards budget magic video and I'm very happy the play style is so strong in Pioneer, even if Adeliz herself isn't the best choice for the deck.
i'd like to know the reason for not playing abbot of keral keep? it seems really good in this deck, as so much of the deck is one mana. the only downside being the miss on cruise and stormchaser... and those are great, but surely the risk/reward is worth it
Why not Slip Through Space in place of Warlord’s Fury? I feel like a cantrip that makes a creature unblockable would be a much better choice than one for first strike.
I wonder if cutting down to 18 or even 17 lands is okay? You flooded out a lot through these games and the deck functions well even on 2 or 3 mana. Maybe that is greedy, but with London mulligan and the million cantrips I think the deck can hit land drops.

14:14 I thought Soul-Scar Mage prevented Thopter's graveyard effects, because +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters annihilate each other, but I was wrong. After looking at the rulebook on SBE's (State-based effects, or, faster-than-interrupt-speed for you old fogies,) Graveyard effects happen equally as fast as -1/-1 and +1/+1 annihiliate, and, in the event of a tie, happen first. Thanks, MTGO!
@@theoneandonlyflexo you're right they happen at the same time, so a -1/-1 counter is seen at the same time a +1/+1 counter is seen and the creature is dead from being at zero. Hangarback died with a +1/+1 counter on it.
@@drakeconsumerofsoulsandche5761 True, but probably could get away with 2 Fabled Passage. Just wanted to make the point in general for Pioneer because I think people are so used to fetches in other formats that Pioneer land bases have been pretty boring in many deck lists I've seen.
Yeah, this deck in particular really wants to curve out and have untapped mana. I think Fabled Passage is important for slower three+ color decks though.
I don't really like playing aggro but i too suspect that games can be stolen off the back of greedy three color shock/pain land mana bases. Sunday my lgs is gonna try to get pioneer to fire. I am signing up and you know what, i think im gonna play this. I haven't played cruise in a few years and none of the guys will expect me to play aggro. Great show Seth!
Seeing Sulfur Falls makes me think of last year's Standard, but playing it in place of Steam Vents rather than in addition to Steam Vents... I know it's for budget purposes, but still, I feel like shock lands+buddy lands are great together, just about perfect mana up to 3 colors, almost the best thing short of fetches+shocks (ok, ok, if you go to Legacy you can do even better), but watching this reminds me of just how bad buddy lands can be on their own.
That's the beauty of Pioneer. If you've been playing Standard the last few years (and held onto your cards) you probably have most of the cards you need already.

I don't like the overlay change to a serif font. I think it looked best as sans serif. Matches the MTGO font better as well. And the MTGGoldfish logo is also sans serif.
It might be worth it. The main issue is it can be awkward with Prowess since we really want to cast our spells before we attack, but with Skewer we need to deal damage to cast it for one mana.

No? All State based effects happen at the same time as one effect. So the death trigger sees zero +1/+1 counters.
@@theoneandonlyflexo so, why there's a thopter after WiLighnting the hangar?
@@theoneandonlyflexo you're right they happen at the same time, so a -1/-1 counter is seen at the same time a +1/+1 counter is seen and the creature is dead from being at zero. Hangarback died with a +1/+1 counter on it.
Instead of Warlord's Fury why not run Slip through Space?
I like how to Seth winning and casting Treasure Cruise are the same thing
No fetch lands in Pioneer? Fabled Passage or Evolving Wilds are in. If you have Steam Vents instead, Mystic Sanctuary is good too.
This deck definitely doesn't want tapped lands
@@drakeconsumerofsoulsandche5761 True, but probably could get away with 2 Fabled Passage. Just wanted to make the point in general for Pioneer because I think people are so used to fetches in other formats that Pioneer land bases have been pretty boring in many deck lists I've seen.
@@imakuni67 land bases are rarely that interesting
Yeah, this deck in particular really wants to curve out and have untapped mana. I think Fabled Passage is important for slower three+ color decks though.
Why no Temur Battle Rage?
I don't really like playing aggro but i too suspect that games can be stolen off the back of greedy three color shock/pain land mana bases. Sunday my lgs is gonna try to get pioneer to fire. I am signing up and you know what, i think im gonna play this. I haven't played cruise in a few years and none of the guys will expect me to play aggro. Great show Seth!
I wonder if embercleave would be good in this deck
I'd play 1, maybe 2 max
Not really that much
I think we might need more creatures to really make it work. A lot of times we only have one or two threats.
Please do a non budget version of this for a stream or much abrew!!!!
Really the non-budget version is just getting the 4 shocklands. Prowess is budget weaponized to the point of being hilarious
Magma jet wouldn't be decent in sideboard maybe? I wonder
Wait, are bounce lands legal in this format? Because you keep chanting "karoos! Karoos!"
surprised on the price of soul scar mage. price may go down soon.
other than that i think the mana base is a bit weird
Seeing Sulfur Falls makes me think of last year's Standard, but playing it in place of Steam Vents rather than in addition to Steam Vents... I know it's for budget purposes, but still, I feel like shock lands+buddy lands are great together, just about perfect mana up to 3 colors, almost the best thing short of fetches+shocks (ok, ok, if you go to Legacy you can do even better), but watching this reminds me of just how bad buddy lands can be on their own.
Yeah, and optimal manabase would play Steam Vents over Sulfur Falls, but Steam Vents is so expensive :(
Soul-Scar Mage and the 2 colour lands seems to have considerably spiked in price, on both MTGO and "paper" but mostly MTGO.
What's wrong with the font on the right? It looks terrible.
Spirebluff canal is 4x more expensive than steam vents on MODO and doesn’t play well with sulfur falls. Seems like an easy change for a budget list
Slip through space is a really underestimated card for wiz-prowess. lets you cycle a card for U and get in for some free dmg through blockers.
Why not temur battle rage?
25:50 maybe you should include ulamog ^^
From playing Frontier quite a bit, stormchaser mage having 3 toughness is huge, so would recommend people playing it :)
I love that I need to buy nothing to play this deck, already own it all... pretty excited for trying it out.
That's the beauty of Pioneer. If you've been playing Standard the last few years (and held onto your cards) you probably have most of the cards you need already.
@@MTGGoldfish I sold off a lot of my Theros/Khans, kicking myself now.
Grasp of darkness is underrated in this format and immolating glare... I run them in my esper control pioneer deck.... it’s been going well.
Hmm, I might have to try Grasp in Mono-Black Devotion.
MTGGoldfish you won’t be disappointed. It’s just as good as it was in standard...(oddly lol). Ultimate price is one I’ve been trying out lately too.
Keep up the great content !!
Why no bedlam?
I kind of want to try and build Counterburn in this format. Might acutally be decent?
It's what I'm doing
@@drakeconsumerofsoulsandche5761 You running Guttersnipe or nah?
@@TehSeksyManz nah. It's good, but only if you can strain their resources
@@drakeconsumerofsoulsandche5761 I was thinking of just using Thermo Alchemist and Electrostatic Field for the creatures. Maybe 2 Keranos at the top end, IDK.
@@TehSeksyManz my finishers are keranos and chandra TOD, plus minds wipe because I love that card
Deck seems mana heavy?
Next time you update the deck there Seth san, switch out Wizard's Lightning, Crash Through, Stormchaser Mage, Soul-Scar Mage, and Warlord's Fury for Guttersnipe, Young Pyromancer, Murmuring Mystic, Impact Tremors, Firebrand Archer, Cavalcade of Calamity, and Blistercoil Weird, and for the sideboard add the cards Electrostatic Field, Scorch Spitter, Thermo-Alchemist and then replace the sideboard that is showing in this video for this deck because I want to see in a video how good my suggestions work for this deck to see if there is anything that needs changing or something like that.
Sounds super fun!
Gotta use the invasion opts and stronghold shocks
Bolt the bird works for goose
Push the elf otherwise?
Doesn't have that same ring
The more I see of Pioneer, the more I like it. It needs some bans to even it all out, but it looks so fresh compared to Modern.
I’m saddened by the lack of Mizzium Tank
I would like to see more Modern or Pioneer content. Not a huge fan of Standard especially now that every deck is running Oko.
I don't like the overlay change to a serif font. I think it looked best as sans serif. Matches the MTGO font better as well. And the MTGGoldfish logo is also sans serif.
Three colors isnt all that painful in this format if one of your colors is green, thanks to Attune with Aether
"I don't know what our opponent's doing. I feel like we should be scared of it." - SaffronOlive
Awww, no needles. I was hoping to see opponent die to their enchantment due to Nahiri being locked down lol
Why aren't you playing skewer? It's lightning 5-8
It might be worth it. The main issue is it can be awkward with Prowess since we really want to cast our spells before we attack, but with Skewer we need to deal damage to cast it for one mana.
Fiery Impulse is a better wild slash at least vs creatures
Wow this dexk really reflects my personality
I’ve noticed a lot people are playing Wild Slash. Everyone forget about Fiery Impulse?
Impulse is fine but it doesn't hit face.
Wildslash go to face, impulse doesn't
Love this format💜
Me too!
21:30 they could kill their hangarback with the walking bastard, that would have given them 2 blockers in the air
Ah, good call.
