As I say in the video the vast majority of people in the hobby are decent guys, the ones who tend to approach GW staff in public though tend not to be decent at all. I said this in another comment but thought I’d put it here in case any were butthurt or triggered.
Likelihood is I’m not talking about you in this video :) and if I am, well you can swivel.

Only known a few managers over the years being terrible. Most have been great in and out of store, even the ones I don’t know as well will share a smile and head nod in the street or make small talk if in the same place waiting etc, I just don’t bring up hobby stuff outside of gw unless they mention it first unless it is “hows work been?” I used to go down allot in the past to paint and model in store but I would drop £200-£500 a month and buy through them. One that was half way we got along but we used to have frank conversations some times about their attitude in private but would have a reasonable respect and are still friendly now a decade later bumping into each other.

Simple piece of unsolicited advice for anyone working retail: either put a jacket on over your company shirt, or change out of it, if you don't want that kind of attention.
Many people mistakenly assume that if you are wearing a shirt with a company's logo, you are a fan or enthusiast. I doubt anyone who works for law enforcement (especially Corrections) would step foot outside their place of business in their uniform.

I really don't get this vibe in the US stores and can't imagine the local manager being cat called or harrassed in our area. But I will definitly watch myself complaining about release schedules or lack of stock on the websites. I really dont want to be part of the problem but look I just did it....not goint ot edit it away either. The local managers biggest complaint (he ever shared with me) is that he doesnt actually ever get to participate or play himself. This video just reinforces my belief that everyone should be required to work in retail or some other customer-facing position (call center, etc) for a bit so that they understand what it's like and have that perspective going forward in their lives. I have worked in retail and worked in call centers for over 5 years. I don't wish that level of experience on anyone but I learned more about how to be a decent person from those jobs than from any other experience in my life. I can't even imagine approaching a GW employee when they are off the clock about the hobby because of my own retail experience. I cringed so hard at these stories. I have also asked my local GW manager what I can do to help them and their store simply because I appreciate them being there and listening to me ramble because I have been on the other side of the counter and I know that they have various numbers and metrics they have to meet in order to check the boxes on some corporate spreadsheet.

I feel like complaining about having people try to talk about the hobby in public while you wear a GW T-Shirt is like a woman complaining people are trying to flirt with her while wearing extremely revealing clothing or a cop off-duty complaining that people are trying to report crimes to him when he's in full uniform in public transit.
Wear whatever you like of course same as with free speech, but don't expect people to not see you. The way you dress in many ways denotes how you want to interact with other people and how you wish they interacted with you. That's not a hard concept to grasp.
I don't go on public transport wearing my with-chemicals smeared lab coat and lab glasses, because that would attract lots of attention be it positive or negative. While the assholes are obviously not in any way excused for acting as such if you know X will happen if you do Y and you don't like X, maybe stop doing Y. It's not that hard of a concept to grasp.

When you wear the uniform you represent the company. Sad fact, but still a fact. When a person berates the company to the person representing the company it should reflect more upon the company than either the customer or the employee.
My reaponse might be something like "Hey man, I just work here."

Common issue with Nurse/Drs/vets and the scrubs, it puts you out there as "the expert" or at the very least "the face" of the entity that you have on your chest. Im not going to say thats fair, or even right, but when people look at the uniform, you represent the whole brand. I will be real, I think they dont even see you as the individual, they just see "the Gdubs". If you can throw an overshirt in the bag for the minute you leave work, might be the best way to solve the issue. I did try and go out of my way to make good staff feel appreciated though. However even back then i tried to be a half decent person.. i didnt cheat or be a sore loser and or do any of the general things that piss people off. I've been in your position at cons on the seller's side for gunpla. Took me all of a minute to set aside my distaste for random people lacking social competencies and to treat them as enthusiasts who have a personal stake in the hobby. All you need to do is shrug and pivot instead of getting worked up. Easy? Not always, I have severe anxiety issues and use those gigs to acclimate myself back to being in crowds, but you just nut up and do it.
GW is a terrible company and I'll spare you the list, but you're the personal front when you've got that shirt on and all you had to do to fix most of your issues was carry a bag with a shirt to change into.
People tend to like feeling righteous about being victims and instead of fixing the issue they'd rather wish for others to change their behaviour.
But what do I know, maybe I need to stomp over to people and ask them the equivalent of 'do we have a problem' and see if I make more friends that way. Maybe talk with your therapist about the topic of 'entitlement' next time. See what feedback you get.

Get's stressed when complimented? When did that happen? And as I said the times where I was caught short and unable to change out of my GW attire were rather rare - but when it happened I could guarantee shitty things were about to happen when walking about. The winter was the best time because I almost always had a coat to put on - people still recognize you though.
A lot of the people who have come on here to make snide points tend to focus on the fact that I was wearing a GW jumper, but a lot of the time I was also just recognized getting on or off trains in normal clothes, going to the shops, walking around the town centre where my shop was. For every 1 of those interactions that was with a normal person and nice there were 4-5 that were, frankly, probably with people like yourself and others who have commented on the video saying similar things. I like to make these videos easy to listen to and follow along with so I am often guilty of dropping unimportant details (like me not always walking around with the GW gear on) only to have folks like yourself point to them and start screaming. Comes with the territory of being on TH-cam and I accept it.
Am I entitled for not wanting to be shouted at on public transport or walking down the street simply because I am an unimportant individual at a company that sells toy soldiers that people are butthurt with? If those are your parameters then I guess I am.

You're behaving in an entitled manner for taking a job where you handle people for them to behave like you want them to and you're entitled for feeling as if you can just blanket demonize anyone who doesn't immediately pity you for the "hardships" you're enduring. Everyone out there has something to deal with and a lot of them by far harder things than the piss you bitch about.

I have only had one really weird interaction with a GW manager, as far as I know there is only 1 GW shop in my state and it's about an hours drive from where I live.
This was right after businesses were opening back up from covid lockdowns and I was just getting into 40k. I really liked the sisters and had started an army but for some reason boxes of regular battle sisters were impossible to find, hell eBay only had a few boxes and people were trying to charge over twice what they normally sold for. I called the store because I didn't want to drive all that way for nothing, the manager picks up and I ask him if he has any boxes of battle sisters which he says no, okay no problem I'm also working on my night goblin army so I ask him what he has in the way of night goblins, the dude practically yells at me " They are Gloomspite Gitz not night goblins", I decided screw it I'll drive down there I need something to paint.
I get to the store ( which is the size of a shoe box), and said I called about the night goblins, " they are Gloomspite Gitz" he corrects me again. I apologize, Christ knows why, and have him grab a few things for me. As he is getting what I asked for I look over and see 2 boxes of battle sisters, not believing my luck I say " hey I asked about those, and you said you didn't have any", he replied " I found them in back after your call", obviously he wasn't going to tell me about them.
" Ok I'll take both of those boxes as well", I then tell him I've been looking everywhere for them for about a month with no luck and how much eBay was selling them for. The prick actually had the nerve to ask me if I was planning on buying them to resell on eBay, then said he was only going to sell one box to me. I got pissed n said " look man I'm spending a couple hundred as is here and if you won't sell both boxes to me I'll just go somewhere else", so of course he sold me both boxes.
This was such a weird interaction I still can't figure what the hell was up with that guy but it soured me on that shop and now I only spend money at a FLGS that is 4x the size and has employees that are actually nice.

I noticed this the other day this week when I entered a GW store (one of the 3 in my city), I asked if he had some Air GW paints he didn't, I saw someone I recognized and started talking to him and the manager suddenly snapped with angry face: "Could you two move away from us and talk somewhere else so you don't interrupt our game ?"; the GW was small and noisy and I realized that he was just a cvnt like the rest of them and to think over a year ago I dropped 400 euros at his store on AoS stuff; he just didn't want us in the vicinity of his majestic game table. I just don't trust people who work in GW shops no more; I just don't feel comfortable in GW shops very much.
So what I'm saying is that this was in a GW store and yet again that slightly dismissive behaviour towards me I get from yet another GW manager. I'm starting to get p1ssed off with it, it's the fickle nature of them; maybe it's because they get treated like sh1t from HQ and the sh1t trickles down to the customer.
So that's 2 different GW stores in the same city where I've had unpleasant experiences with managers in the last 2-3 years, my mate had a terrible experience just asking for paints from the 3rd GW store in my city and he's like a top tier painter in Southern Europe that wins competitions.

Be angry, be vocal but whilst bronies I’ll agree are weird, two bad experiences that you had shouldn’t define everyone and you already make a point of that in the video when you say, “I have to deal with the people that ruin it for everyone else.” I’m not really defending them, I’m not one and never wish to be but try to be a little less collateral, otherwise you’re probably going to offend people you don’t really intend to.

That's more or less customer service in every industry for you. Some clients are whiny sadistic dirt bags. Others have very legitimate concerns that are rightly brought about because of poor quality and service of the product.

Wow!! I totally understand this entitlement. I was an Optician for two large worldwide companies, and the way people would treat you, especially at the members only company, was absolutely appalling. I watched grown ass people throw themselves on the floor like toddlers if they didn't get their way.

I get that when you are on your own time you want to just get on and do whatever it is you need to be getting on with, but at the same time you decided to wear out that top which had GW logos all over it, a simple hoodie would have taken care of every single interaction you had, it comes down to the old debate, if you wear out in public a companies property with and you work for them you are representing that company, don't get me wrong it doesn't give a pass for people to be a dick and harass you. Maybe next time have a change of clothing and or a hoodie to hand.

I mean if I walked around in public in the shirt of a brand that releases a new addition and two years after the fact has not released all the rules for their over priced product I should expect to talk about it. I think retail workers forget that the job is in fact public relations and the point of the shirt is that people will talk to you about it. I have worked in fast food and retail I have literally had to argue about the name of the place we were standing in and that I worked at. I have had a woman walked in with no bra and a see through top and have had my lunches interrupted. Still did not seem to hate the customers as much as you do. Its like you dont expect to have the same conversations over and over when its your literal job to do so like its suppose to be fun at all times. Just sounds entitled to me.

Gonna be honest with you exile, this video gives me a lot less sympathy for gw staff. I understand you are forced to interact with the worse parts of the hobby, I get it and I sympathize, but not every hobbyist is that guy. I know you said that, but it just feels wrong to be judged by the worst examples. It probably contributes to that adversarial relationship gw has with its fan base.

@@northernexile ok i think we are on the wrong foot. I understand what you said there and you were really clear most people in the hobby range from decent people you’d like to hang out with to acceptable members of society. I am with you on that. My problem is how on edge you made managers sound, like they are constantly waiting for a horrible interaction. It makes you sound paranoid and given how it seems like a common thing among gw managers, it probably contributes to that animosity between gw and their community.

    • @northernexile
      @northernexile  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@notknightbean Well unfortunately dude a lot of managers ARE on edge when approached in the street or on the way home - there is a reason we cover up the GW gear whenever we can. I used to field VERY angry calls from customers when 8th came along, what if one of those decides to come to the store and follow me home?
Its unfortunate, but also understandable that as a GW manager we see a LOT more of the bad when people approach us than we do the good - and so we react to that.

Wow, do things sound bad in GW!
I'm sorry to hear that, as back in the day in Manchester the staff were amazing (talking late 80s and early 90s when I was at uni there).
I got back into 40k a few years ago. Tried to chat to a shop manager and got short shrift. The shop was empty but he wasn't even up to saying hello. I left without buying anything even though I'd wanted to get something new to paint.
I'm also not surprised that managers get a lot of flack, people will assume that managers will feedback a large upwelling of dislike for a certain aspect of the hobby. How else would they think people at the top find out what is happening? Balance in 9th edition has been dreadful at times. I'd hope GW management are getting info from all shops saying "imbalance is upsetting the sheep and could hurt sales".
I'm all for letting people live there lives; however, if some is walking around in a GW t-shirt then they must be mad if they think the odd person isn't going to come up and say "hi, I play ...."😀.

Bingo, I swear GW employees complain about their "celebrity" (which like... lmao they don't really have even in the U.K, it's a niche hobby) but at the same time expect to be listened/deferred to when it comes to the game, I'd ask which is it, can't have it both ways though clearly they want to.
Also if half these people had ever worked OTHER retail jobs they'd know shitty treatment is far from exclusive to GW staff and compared to what a supermarket cashier endures on a daily basis it's not too insane.
Are there awful, ridiculous and annoying human beings that play Warhammer? Sure, and fuck those guys, but a lot of them are behind the counter wearing a FW shirt.

Worked in retail for a long time. Manager, assistant manager, regular schlub. There were a lot of people I didn't like, but I treated them politely because that was my job. It's why I quit being in retail period. It isn't a fun job when you deal with people being awkward, rude, or entitled. We used to have "safety meetings" at the bar (well several bars) where we would let off steam and complain about work (mostly just drink and have fun though). It was sorely needed.
That said, you can't really do anything about people being pricks. They hate the company, despite the fact that they love what the old company created. It's been a minute since I watched your videos, but I hope you got out of the company and found a better job. Being a GW retail worker of any stripe obviously wasn't the best fit for you, so I hope you upgraded. Preferably non-retail, as retail is godawful.
