Had something similar happen in a Star Wars Legion game I took part in. The dude was constantly mismeasuring, arguing with rules, and gloating whenever he scored a hit. I had a Rebel Army with a Luke that I put a lot of work into, to include an LED lightsaber. This idiot, when he was able to knock Luke out, FLICKED him off the table. This broke the lightsaber off and somehow detached one of the LED wires from the conductive undercoat. The organizer just stared at him before saying, "Get out and if you ever come back to this store, you'll be trespassed." He ended up putting a formal complaint on the guy through Fantast Flight Games that prevented him from entering registered tournaments for two years.

had this sort of thing happen while delivering an army to a customer that i had just finished painting for. he was a regular at the LGS, and i guess he had a reputation as having tough armies. as i was walking in, he had just finished a game and his opponent was already red in the face. as i called out to my customer and told him i had his new army ready, his opponent came over and smacked the box out of my hand, sending it into the wall nearby. now... i do a lot of custom work, including special bases, a bit of kitbashing, and some personal touches as requested. so hearing all that smash and break as this guy (and he's like 50) loses his cool and targetted the guy's new army. needless to say, guy was banned from every game shop within the area, was banned from any gaming conventions, and the cops were called. he was arrested and the guy took him to court to get restitution for the damage (about $5000 of minis were wrecked), and i redid the whole thing, but he was cool enough to pay me a bit extra for having to do it all a second time.

Man, at the cost of a Mastodon, I think you could very well have called the cops and pressed charges for destruction of property. It's likely a misdemeanor, but putting him through getting arrested, making bail and showing up for court would have been pretty sweet revenge. It's no more than he deserved. He's lucky the community is what it is.

Just found this video, wanted to share a quick story.
I was playing in a 40K tournament at MEGACON in Orlando Florida. As I recall there were about 50-ish players there, I was playing Orks back in the day and had a fairly fun and solid list that included a "Sniffer Squig" the rule for this was that no Callidus could polymorph into any Ork as long as they were within 18" of the Squig. I also took a teleport scrambler which caused deep strikers to double their scatter distance. I made it to the final table against a Space wolves player that had all deep strikers save one squad and a Callidus assassin. After I set up I explained that he couldn't use his polymorphine and had to deploy normally, which would obviously be bad for the assassin. He pitched a fit and called the tournament organizer over who verified my rules as being correct. After this he won first turn so I reminded him about the teleport scrambler, which I had mentioned after setting up. Needless to say he attempted to teleport all his terminators down right in front of my lines at various locations. One squad landed on a mob and was auto destroyed as they could not deploy, another had double 6s for scatter which sent them off the board and his final two squads scattered out of range of his guns. This further infuriated him as I just rolled forward with 50ish Orks and various vehicles etc and proceeded to kill all but 2 of the 10 terminators. at which point he was chucking his models (nicely painted I might add) into a box breaking arms and legs and weapons galore. To his credit he did concede after that. To top it off I had a battle wagon that I used to put the helmets/heads of interesting armies I had beaten in tournaments and fun campaigns. At one point folks were just painting up helmets to put on my battle wagon's banner as it was well known in central florida. I probably shouldn't have, but I asked if he would paint a Space Wolf helmet for my Battle Wagon's banner, he looked at me, picked up one of his basic marines and bit the head off and spit it on the table. I had a couple friends who were with me, so I picked up the helmet and grabbed my glue and put it on the battle wagon right then and there, which drew a ton of laughter from most of the folks who had witnessed his poor sportsmanship.

      1) the Mastodon is a resin casted tank
      2) It's a $610 or 610 bucks PRE TAX, the guy paid (After taxes) 400 euros, british pounds, not USD!
If they were to make the Mastodon into plastic, it would probably be around $250-300 bucks or 175 Euros
Source: A guy who owns an Astraeus ($443.34 after tax in my area, USD), has had banter with Horus Heresy enjoyers, and would've happily argued with the TO and held the man captive in a hold until we fished out his wallet, and charged him ~$700 USD for a new Mastodon.
Hell, I would've called the police and argued that because the model is assembled and painted (it took me about 8 hours of effort to get the Astraeus assembled properly, resin you have to shave away, heat up, mold into place, etc) even if you charged the man minimum wage, the tank's value would likely be at or above $1,000, which is $500 more than you need for a Class a Misdemeanor for property damage, but if you can get the cop to agree with you that the man likely spent 30-100 hours on the tank, all you need to do is convince the officer that the value of the model is $1500.01 or more, and it's a felony. (numbers may vary from state to state)
Class A misdemeanor = up to 1 year jail time and up to $1000 fine.
Felony is OOF = 18 months - 24 months jail time (no less) and up to $10,000 fine.

Personally I don't really care if I win or lose in fact more often than not if I find out if my opponent has a titan or something equally as OP I try to challenge them in a match that is clearly ridiculously rigged against me.
For example if you have a thunderhawk gunship and a super heavily armored formation (and have a good bit of background lore) then I will happily play as a target dummy with a simple squad or two knowing that I'm clearly going to lose.
I find that people don't usually need a excuse to bring out the big guns and I like to happily be that excuse.

I am extremely new to the WH40K game and I have only ever played two games. This isn't much a nightmare, it's just a inconvenience that has swayed me away from playing any game since. My first game was a very nice very friendly learning curve as I was playing Nids for the 10th edition and the guy teaching me was playing necron. He was extremely kind and I wouldn't mind playing him again once I have an army Im happy with. So I managed to take out half his army in one turn. Then watched the entire Army rebuild itself except two units. Mean while my army lost a ¼th of its fighting force in turn one. That game ended on a good not around turn 3 and i am happy about it. Next game is what killed me. We have a kid who plays tournaments and professional games. I was playing SM for the first time and he played Imperial Fist. He immediately whent to work setting things up helping me get everything set up and telling me good setups and bad set ups. Then as I'm trying to learn how to play he is telling me exactly what my troops can do and starts rolling dice for his units ans mine resloving things faster than I can recall the name of my unit to find the info and learn it myself. By the end of turn two I have killed 6 units and he already took my entire army off the board. Not one troop remained standing. I decided to just collect and build models and haven't played since. I want to learn and find the right army before I try again. My heart is leaning on Nids and Chaos Knights.

16:33 "Why isn't he banned from the store for all time?" It's simple, really, his money fits in the till just like anyone else's.
Banning a purchaser of Games Workshop products is a serious financial decision, considering the price of their products. The auto-disqualification from tournaments for causing trouble is as far as the shop would want to go, as that gives this Big Spender (and if you play Games Workshop, you know how much you have to spend just to keep up with the continual rule changes and the new models to replace the 'obsoleted' ones due to the new rules) Yet Another Chance to change his ways and be a good sport, WITHOUT depriving the store of his continued purchases, as banning would do.

I had a time, this was a few years ago during Horus Heresy 1.0. I'm a long time 40k player, so I've seen a few things, but this short little thing still gets me. It was the start of a tournament, 3k a head. No real stakes, this was just a fun end of summer thing. Just a few nice competitive matches before we got into fall and started some narrative stuff.
My Death Guard vs Night Lords. Lets call the other player Brian.
Already from the start as we drew lots to decide our matches, Brian rolls his eyes and very loudly starts complaining. His Legion is all about Fear and the Death Guard are immune to Fear. So his main trick isn't going to work on my army.
But we start our set up and deployment. It was just a total war mission, just fight until the end. Most of Brian's Night Lords are mounted in drop pods or in deepstrike as terminators or assault marines. I turtle my army up, getting into cover, using tanks to max out my area of denial and make sure he can't get a sneaky drop pod in my lines. I measure it out and even have him confirm my measurements. He's a little annoyed, and Im purposefully doing it because his attitude was shitty.
Top of turn 1. He brings in a Vet Squad with combi-meltas right in front of my Sicaran. He rolls to scatter and scatters a full 12" back, now outside of Melta range. He screams "FUCK!" and starts using a bunch of homophobic slurs.
I tell him its not a big deal and if he calms down, I'll let him re-roll the scatter. I really didn't care, I'm a pretty laidback player. House rules of fun over anything else. But I tell him he gets one re-roll per drop pod if he wants, but he has to keep the second roll, no keeping the first.
He agrees and rolls to scatter. 12", this time directly off table. He screams "Fuck this shit!" and smashes his own drop pod on the ground. Calls me a cheating homophobic slur and said it was gay of me to measure out all my deployments so he can't get drop pods close. He said I could go fuck myself and starts packing up.
I don't say anything and he awkwardly packs up his whole army and leaves, mumbling slurs under his breath. He leaves behind the broken drop pod, that to this day has been repainted and used as terrain in the store. I dont know if he was banned, but I haven't seen him in the store since.

Didn't happen to me, but to a friend some years back. MTG tourney at our local gaming shop. My pal has his chosen decks in hand, inside playing the tourney. Unbeknowsnt to him, someone else who had seen or knew that he had the balance of his massive MTG collection outside in his car, decided to get sticky fingers. Well, perp acquires card collection, immediately heads across town to the other hobby store in town, and tries to sell some of those cards. In the original, labelled, identifiable dekboxes they were stored in. Owner of second shop recognized the cases and knew exactly who they belonged to. So, as he is stalling the thief, he has his staff call both the police and my friend. My pal does end up getting ALL of his cards back (which were insured due to the value of his collcetion) and the perp catches some serious misdemeanor charges, class B as I recall, because that collection was worth tens of thousands back in the late 90s. Don't mess with the local gaming community...we stick together.

This is a big issue in the tabletop space, it's full of nerds(no offense intended) who are very non confrontational and people like Frankie take advantage of that fact to act like a bully. FYI, I can guess the reason hes not banned from the store, the margins on owning and running a tabletop store are mighty slim and I'm betting our pal Frankie spends a lot of money there, in short- money talks. He will be allowed to continue with his behavior until you guys threaten to "boycott" the store and never give them your business until hes gone. You have to create a situation where Frankie is costing the store more than he spends and once that condition is met he will be banned immediately.

Something similar happened at a store tourney I frequented. A camera filming the tourney caught the whole thing and the police arrested the guy, who couldn't leave because somebody had slashed his tires and put one of those long-stemmed steel cigarette containers through his side window. They also had footage of the guy who put the returning bully through the side wall of the shop into the barber shop next door... where he then bit one of the barbers and got stabbed with scissors.
    Good times, man.
What's he doing today, twenty years later? Guard at a youth detention center. Makes sense. I bet he's a real peach.

Note: Mastodon is a $610 pre-tax model, or ~$650-670 USD after taxes, or nearly a 400 Pound tank after taxes.
If I saw that happen to myself or one of my friends, I would've called the police and argued that because the model is assembled and painted (it took me about 8 hours of effort to get the Astraeus assembled properly, resin you have to shave away, heat up, mold into place, etc) even if you charged the man minimum wage, the tank's value would likely be at or above $1,000, which is $500 more than you need for a Class a Misdemeanor for property damage, but if you can get the cop to agree with you that the man likely spent 30-100 hours on the tank, all you need to do is convince the officer that the value of the model is $1500.01 or more, and it's a felony. (numbers may vary from state to state)
Class A misdemeanor = up to 1 year jail time and up to $1000 fine.
Felony is OOF = 18 months - 24 months jail time (no less) and up to $10,000 fine.
We are getting this guy thrown into jail, one way or another. I'm a nice and patient guy. The store manager has dropped my painted Storm Raven, it was an accident, I get it. I fixed it up, I really don't mind.
But Franky? I would've dove for you, dragged you outside, tied you up, pinned you, and called the police, and if anybody tried to stop me, I would honestly say "It's ok, I only participate in tournaments for fun. You can give me a lifetime ban, I'm fine with it. But I'm going to make sure these types don't get away with anything ever again. I hope your tushie is ready for jail time"

    • @hammer1349

@rononel8046 that's because a lot of has changed. The new location is smaller but the rent is also 3x what it used to be so now it has no choice but to be more of a shop than a gaming space. The gaming during the week as well wasn't really doing all that much except being a headache for the staff with regular arguments about rules etc which is not ideal. They may do more gaming stuff now and then but it won't be anywhere near the scale it was before for quite some time.

I once had one of those type of people come into my FLGS and began observing the games that were going on. When he noticed my Tau; he immediately came over, began chirping endlessly on our game making my opponent visually uncomfortable and doing his best to be as obnoxious as possible towards me. Claiming that 'Tau aren't a real army, The imperium is better, you should throw those models in the trash. And pretty much overused and unoriginal Tau meme you could think of.
Having dealt with this type before (I realize it kind of comes with the territory with some people and Tau) I simply ignored him and kept my focus on my opponent and game. As we finished our game and I started to pack up my models; this guy had the nerve to reach for one of my Broadsides; saying 'Those models are such garbage, here let me toss them out for you.'
I managed to react before him and grabbed his arm by the wrist, in a firm enough grip not to hurt but enough to get the message through as I gave him a very angry stare in his eyes and a firm tone. "Do 'NOT' Touch someone's models."
Of course the guy begins screaming bloody murder, pulling his hand back; which I had let go mind you and turned around to try and paint me the villain to the store owners... Too bad the store manager was right behind him and had come to ask him to quiet down; saw the entire thing unfold and banned him from the store on the spot.
The store manager being a friend knows I used to do some martial arts before I had to stop for medical reasons; looked at me; very clearly trying to hide a smirk and said 'thanks for not hurting him.' before leaving me and my opponent be to clean up after our game.
Do NOT ever resort to violence. But no one at any point has a right to touch or damage you or your property. And if they do not experience consequences for their actions; they absolutely will keep doing it thinking they can get away with it. The guy in this video's story should have been banned on the spot from that and all future tournaments and had the people present warn and blacklist him from other nearby stores. At least until he formally apologized AND provided reimbursement for the destroyed/damaged model. Regardless of if it was repaired or not.

Fighting the urge to not punch a person like that needs a will of steel. It's the hours of building and painting, blood sweat and tears etc. disrespecting that and disrespecting you.
It's extreme provocation. To ban him is the way because I wait for the day that one day Warhammer bad behaviour is going to get someone killed one day.
I think a better way would have been to confront him there and then to ensure 100% that you would get compensation from him and not let him just run away without recourse. If he refused then is the time maybe to restrain him and call the cops for damage to property.

Only time I’ve seen a model get damaged/destroyed was Yugioh players man. They’re urchins. Guy had a Stompaa when they first came out, it was sitting behind him as he was playing a 1000 point game and a kid came up picked it up, and just dropped it on the floor.
Ever sense then I try to stay on a side of the table where I can atleast keep one eye on my models. They’re more likely to be stolen especially if there is a yugioh/MTG tournament going on (in my personal experience).
The guy was upset, but not for long. The store owner was a really good guy and offered him store credit or a brand new one. So it had a happy ending

Had that been my store, that guy wouldn't have just been banned for life, I'd kept him there until he had bought a replacement model and I was able to convince OP to have the cops called and press charges against that guy. After all, that tank is quite expensive to begin with, and if had a decent paint job then it would be quite easy to prove the value had gone quite up a bit since purchase. That guy was more than lucky,. More like some demon was enjoying his acts and made sure he got away with it.

The price of the model is not the only factor, you have to count the primer, paint, supplies and the paint job. That puts the value of the Mastodon well over fivehundred pounds plus the paint job. Even at just five hours of work you could easily justify thirty pounds an hour, more if you are very good painter and been doing it for decades.
BTW, that was most likely a felony, I am not sure about UK law but in the states it is at that dollar amount. I know where I live they value art work based on skill/fair market OR your salary/time whichever is greater.
