    Could you please update the settings for 2022? Yesterday there was an update for the Sonos Arc and they said that they had changed the algoritm on the centre speakers for the Arc which would make the sound on dialogues more "crisp"... after the update and the new trueplay setting, I do not get as good sound with these settings as I used to. I can hear that the bass has decreased a lot. Could you please check this out???

      There's no perfect settings as if you truly knew how Sonos works, it all factors on your room size and speaker distances. I love Peters videos but people should be aware of this. Ideally best settings is to tune with true play, then use a SPL meter (either buy one or use a phone app) and make sure every speaker is the same volume. You can do this by finding a 5.1.2 test file then running through that with the spl meter. :)

  • @akashmakkar7187

    Those using these settings are fooling themselves and ruining the sound target. Measuring far field, the frequency response isn't supposed to be flat!! Dammit! Don't believe in this nonsense. Rtings test for Harman target curve, which has elevated bass and then sloping treble. Sonos, and Bose too, follow the curve for the bass but keep the treble no sloping down. You're turning your setup into a bright sounding, bass shy mess if you're using these settings. It's a shame that so called audiophiles hardly know about loudspeakers and rooms, which is why reading Dr. Floyd Toole's book should be a must for these "audiophiles".

    • @akashmakkar7187
      @akashmakkar7187 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alamoody3668 Default really. Only turn on Loudness based on your listening habits. Night Mode if needed to reduce dynamic range. That's about it. Speech enhancement also if even after Night Mode dialogues aren't clear at the levels at which you listen. Run Trueplay. Test on and off. Repeat the tuning if needed.
      That's about it. Trust the manufacturer. You've spent a lot of money on their product, and they've spent millions upon millions on R&D. You're not going to be able to hack it to sound magically better, especially when using cheap measuring tools without an anechoic chamber.
      Trust Sonos. If you don't, buy some other company's product. Don't use terrible settings as recommended here and kill all their hardwork in tuning the product.

    Peter, have you done any testing with Sonos Arc and Xbox Series X? Turning on Dolby Atmos in the Series X introduces quite a bit of delay between what is happening on-screen and audio. My setup, which is similar-ish to many others reporting the same issue, is as follows: Xbox connected to Samsung Q90t using HDMI port 3 (2.1-capable) with correct 2.1 cable, HDMI 2.1 cable from eArc port to Sonos Arc. This setup is meant to ensure that I do not miss out on VRR, VLL and other 2.1 goodness. Playing Atmos-enabled movies on the Samsungs native Netflix app works as it should, so my suspicion is that the Xbox, or perhaps the Dolby Access app on the Xbox, introduces something to the chain it is not supposed to. I saw another video that confirms that the TV set does not need to be put in passthrough-mode to actually pass through Atmos, I confirmed this by testing. But gaming has bad lag, almost half a scond. Playing BluRay discs has much less delay, but it is still there. I can't see that any of the tech-people on TH-cam are talking about this, have you heard of this before?

    • @inkphusion
      @inkphusion 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I battled with that issue for a while. I would have to watch movies with the remote in my hand. I recently relocated my sub. I think that resolved the issue.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That problem is usually when the sound engineers make the sound profile to be peaky at some frequencies. If you look at what I am trying to do, you will notice that I am trying to flatten out the curve. This should alleviate the problem of the explosions and music being too loud. In stock configuration and tune, the bass region is way too strong.

  • @robsfilmclub
    @robsfilmclub 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another great comprehensive video, Peter, thank you! Question for you. In theory, would the size of the room play a factor in the outcome of the sound curves once you do the initial Trueplay? My Sonos system (same setup as this video) is in a very large room, so when I tune using Trueplay could it play a factor in this? So, for example, maybe my bass needs -2 and -1 (to help fill the room more) or something, and my heights might need one more notch up, for example? Or, do you believe the curve will still produce the same effects regardless of size? I guess I could also play around with this on my own. Thanks!

      Good question!

    • @mrzedark3190
      @mrzedark3190 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on your listening distance, the height can enhance the tilt (I'm using 1.5'' tilt). You should use test tones from Dolby for this, and find the volume where it's just before you can't tell if it's height or coming from the device itself (will make sense when you test). For me and my listening distance, 4 doesn't transfer to enough DB from reflective audio to tell - when everything else is chaos in the audio - so I run 6. However when I hit 8 it's so loud from the source (before reflection), it don't hear the height anymore when the atmos is 'loud'. So because 8 makes the height disappear to my ears (spatially), I bring it down 2 --- to have better DB range of quiet and loud sounds. In test tones, right now all my speakers from my listening position (at chosen volume) is 64DB - that's 64DB FR/LR/C/RR/RL, and with +6 Atmos, the up firing hit at 70DB... so just enough to be present, but not enough to wash the other speakers out. When I am watching Streaming Vs Lossless and DD vs DD+ vs DD+ Atmos vs TrueHD, I often have to tweak my surrounds as well.. but I have those values memorized, and they are +1/-1 tweaks.

    Great Video Peter. I recently setup our home theater with an Arc, 2 Subs & Play 5's for the rears. I really enjoy your recommended settings for music, it was an improvement to my ears indeed! I only had to tweak the sub lvl up to -3 for our liking. My room is fully carpeted and Is 15x20 with 8 foot ceilings & these settings work great. I'm currently listening to Television with the same settings applied to see if it's also an improvement. I'm experimenting with the rears set to full not just ambient & my TV volume setting for the rears is set to +2. Are those 2 settings the same as yours as well? Full or ambient? And rear TV volume?

      @johnnydo22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm pretty similar to you, I have the same setup but with Play 3's for rears and a 20x20 carpeted 8 foot ceiling room. I tweaked the sub lvl between -1 and -2 depending on the source audio. My rears are set to +3 since my rears are in the back of the room. It sounds great! I suspect I have to have a higher sub level than yours since the room is slightly larger.

      One of Trueplay's function is to set the phase of the subs but phase is very easy to get wrong even with the expensive systems using Audessey or Diracc. And when the phase of a sub is set wrong, the sound can go horribly wrong. I second Tyler's suggestion of using another phone.

Rather the overall performance of the Arc will improve decoupling it from the shelf with raising it of at least one inch while moving it as close as possible to its edge.

      with sub level set to -4 you also change the crossover point, which you are not able to change. so you end up in a lack of bass in the former crossover region. please consider that before changing the sublevel. maybe the sonos dsp compensate for that.
      and the very important message….nobody appreciate and enjoy to hear a flat frequency response curve. there is a difference between flat and linear system setup.

    I have read tons of negative reviews on Google Playstore and on several online fora about the unusability of Sonos S2 platform. Especially that S2 is full of bugs whereby speakers/sub/arc all lose connection to WiFi during music playback and one must reset and run through the setup for every use. Has this also been your experience when using S2? I was considering investing in a Sonos ecosystem (given the high ratings for Sonos hardware), but the many negative reviews of the S2 app make me question whether it is really worthwhile. Appreciate any feedback from you or anybody on here who has used S2. Cheers

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The losing of connection has happened to me before on the S2 platform. In the earlier years, S1 has also gotten into that mess before. But in general, it is still stable. And if we look at the prior development of S1, I can expect S2 to get better over time too.
      To give you an idea, in the past 1 year, I had to do that twice. Which I think is bearable. And one of the times was when I switched out the device which was connected to the LAN.

    Just sub'd to your channel; your videos are awesome!
    If you see this comment (or anyone else who wants to weigh in), I currently have the Nakamichi Shockwafe 9.2.4 system and I was thinking about replacing it with a Sonos system. The Shockwafe is pretty good, but the vocals tend to sound fairly thin and while the subs will certainly rattle the walls, they're a little muddy. I know you'd probably support doing the switch on the basis of wireless surrounds, but putting that aside (I don't really mind the RCA cables) and just judging on sound quality alone, do you think it's worth doing the switch? I'd really value your input or that of anyone else who has heard both of these. I haven't heard the Sonos system in person and I'd love to get someone else's perspective before I head down the Sonos rabbit hole lol.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sean, I'd like to see you at the bottom of this rabbit hole where I am. :D
      I can't really judge this because I do not have experience with the Nakamichi. If the Nakamichi allows you to tune the sound or EQ it, you should try that first. Boost the mids and reduce the bass. It should make the speech more intelligible and reduce the boom.
      Otherwise, my only comment on the Arc with a sub setup is that no one I have recommended the setup to before has complained of the sound quality. Although you might find the Atmos effect underwhelming if you are coming from a 9.2.4 setup!

    • @st.jimmy0244
      @st.jimmy0244 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeterPee Thanks Peter! I've already got the Arc soundbar coming to do a comparison of the soundbars themselves without the surrounds, will go from there. The EQ is one of the reasons; Nakamichi lets you use presets on the remote but there's no real comprehensive EQ. One of the reasons I'm considering taking the Sonos leap. Doing it one step at a time.
