- This video sums up the first year at the Calypso's shipyard. Francine Cousteau, President of The Cousteau Society is visiting the site and Jean-Philippe Brothier and Eric Dayou, long-time Calypso crew are reminiscing their life aboard.

If you are watching this video, then you probably remember her glory days. The education she brought us. The sights we only imagined until she unveiled them to us. How could anyone think she should be sunk? Every lover of the sea knows her name, and that should count for something. If everyone gave just a little, we could restore her to the high standards she deserves, As a museum ship to tour, to show the early equipment used, to teach newer generations the importance of our oceans. Do care!
I am in awe at what these shipwrights are able to do with such an old wooden hulled boat. Simply amazing! If any ship deserved to be restored from this level of neglect and decay the Calypso is the one.👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I’ve seen many people take a wood boat apart to try and restore it only to realize they don’t have the skills money and will to see it to the end. I sure hope that doesn’t happen to this famous vessel. This crew looks like they have all the talent and more. Keep up the good work guys, hope to hear she gets finished and launched 👍
Calypso was built in the USA during WWII as a 136' YMS type minesweeper. 481 were built. They were used in advance of a beach landing. Many became fishing boats. As built they had diagonal planking inside and horizontal planking outside.with tar and felt between the planking layers. A lot of work to fix inside planks. All the outside planks have to be removed. Looks like a complete rebuild with little original wood being used again. Many thousands of working hours. I was a shipwright - looks like experts doing the work.

Thank you for your insight, given that we could not understand what they were saying. I took up SCUBA diving because I grew up watching Jacques, a friend of mine actually got to dive with him, and you will not catch me without my red hat in the winter time. It is old, had it since high school. My wife and my friends raz me about the hat, I simply tell them that if I have to tell you, then you wouldnt understand. What a ship, what a grand lady.
What are the framing timbers? There has been a project going on Pacific NW coast to rebuild a yacht "Tally Ho". Frames are live oak (q virginiana)..

Hi, I see a wooden hull minesweeper originally. I had all this time thought that Calypso was of steel construction.
This ship, her crew and her captain brought the world, the oceans and the spirit of discovery into every living room that could afford a television. Even for those that could not afford a TV, we found a way to be there on those adventures. The advancements in diving technology, cinematography, under water archology, discoveries of new species and oceanic habitats.... The lists go on and on. Calypso is an ICON that most today have forgotten, BUT NOT I... She was and is a vessel of imagination!
I'd give a hundred bucks for a nail from the old planks... what a great piece of history... Thank You for restoring this great ship.
I never realized she was a wooden vessel. As a very young boy at the time I remember being glued to the tv when Cousteau came on. The man brought a totally unknown world to so many millions of people. You might say he was the forerunner to every nature show to follow.

It was built in my state of Washington. I discovered that yesterday. I loved watching it on tv and hope it is restored. It inspired me to travel and Scuba dive.

When I was growing up in the 1960s, my grandfather owned one of the sister ships of the Calypso built by the same shipyard. It was converted from the deck up as a commercial clam boat. He bought it as a decommissioned U.S. Navy minesweeper sometime in the early 1950s. These were solid boats in their prime and my grandfather's hull was still solid with the original build in the 1960s. Great memories!

I loved Cousteau as a kid, the Calypso was like a magic ship to me, they traveled all over the Earth's oceans and I got to see it, as a kid growing up on the coast the ocean is my happy place, it still is. Thank you

She should be registered as a national monument! AND FINISHED!! never the mind bickering! I mean just how cool is it to have a song written about you, how many vessels in history ever had that honour!! and by John Denver of all people!
'Don't actually believe I said anything as heavy as "Amazing" my friend, I simply find it rather "Cool" that he did so, that's all, it's simply my personal opinion, yours obviously differs and I respect that.
At a time in our shallow society when mere celebrity, by its very nature, instantly has a powerful public platform for positive or negative, it's nice to see Mr Denver's particular celebrity and talent aimed at something as worthwhile as "The Calypso."

Alot of work going into this magnificent ship. He would be proud.
Miss him and his maritime wisdom.

For everyone who is upset or nervous about all of the 'destruction' before the reconstruction, you are merely seeing 80 years of maintenance going in all at once . So, relax she is in good hands!!!

When I was a boy Mr. Cousteau went south on the Mississippi River past my home town in Clinton Iowa , I hope they get that ship up and running again !!!
You might want to check out this series from 'The Sampson Boat Co." He's totally restoring a 1910 or so wooden sailing yacht which was a race winner in Britain. He's completed a good deal of the hull. I've been following it for about a year now.

Glad to see this beautiful old vessel being restored and preserved. This old girl has loads of history. From Cousteau, before that plying trade around Malta, before that as a Royal Navy minesweeer.
It would have been great if the Cousteau PBY aircraft had not crashed (killing Phillipe Cousteau) as it too could have been preserved alongside Calypso.

I'm skeptical the ship will ever be restored. A myriad of problems has stalled work on the vessel. Infighting amongst the Cousteau family as well as Grandson of the original owner, non-payment of work performed on the ship, ensuing lawsuits, and a fire in 2017 which damaged repaired sections of the ship to name a few. Little to no information on the progress of the vessel has been released since then.
@@Phyde4ux Sorry to hear that but I thought, while looking at the video of what a considerable task it would be considering the extent of the deterioration of the vessel. Thanks for the info though.

The boat it is in Turkey now ,The status -unknown due the continuous process laws betwen the parts involved ...A great shame -France doesn t due more about the issue .A national treasure for sure .
According to Wikipedia the restoration stalled 1 year ago due to several hundred thousand euros being owed. This after Francine Cousteau had spent a huge amount of money in legal fees to prevent Jacques daughter from his first marriage becoming involved in the project. Dear oh dear.
All the bickering aside, I think those restoration boys deserve a huge congrats! She is in rough shape. Years of sea duty with the Navy, then with Jacques. She has been under water, (sunk at the dock) and patched together how many times? She is in need of a good overhaul. No she should not be sunk or tossed away. The Legend of Jacques, and the World owe her the rapairs she so desperately needs. Wouldn't a dockside museum bring in the revenue needed to keep her up to the standards she deserves?
Required viewing during my teenage years - HOW did Calypso end up in such a deplorable state for a World Star? Restoration, though belated was a MUST.

Bob C converted WW2 minesweeper if I recall correctly. They were wood to not set off magnetic mines.

@@killerkane1957 John Wayne's Wild Goose was a sister ship and looks a lot nicer, they were built in Seattle during the the war.

This ship should be finished and restored to her former glory, no matter how long it takes or how expensive it is! She is a wonder, we can't let her waste away! Stupid French Government... She has a song by John Denver the legendary singer, a few films and not to mention she's was a basis of one of the Theodore Tugboat characters (Rebecca)!!! SHE MUST BE RESTORED :(
Per several internet sources including wikipedia, its not the French government that is the problem it is Equipe Cousteau which has become a mess of family infighting with Francine Cousteau fighting all the JYC children and grand children to keep control.

Good to see that Breton Shipwrights have not lost their skills.
Most people don't realize that the Calypso was a combination of wooden members combined with steel and iron. Given the condition of her hull, at the time of restoration, I'm amazed that she hadn't sunk at her moorings or while under tow.
She already sunk once.
There were no Ferromagnetic materials used in the original construction so any that were found during the re - build had been added since. This restriction on Ferromagnetic materials even extended to Engine parts, anchor chain, valves, Nails Wheelhouse and superstructure etc etc
It is difficult to relate the profound influence this craft had on at least two generations. I am far from a 'tree-hugger' and still have great respect for the 'guys' that ran this ship "so long and so well..."

I am still so sad that why did it end up in this state , but so happy that people are using lost skills to rebuild.
It of course would be cheaper to just use the plans and make a new boat , but there would be no history, learning or passion

I think it was built from a surplus trawler from I what I heard.
Originally it was a british royal navy mine swipper. Hence why it is a wooden ship

I would like to see her restored to perfect working order only with todays modern tech. Jack filled my child hood with his exploration. The reason I became a sailor... Nice to know her origins...
@@thekingsilverado9004 I. Too was hooked on his tv programs. I have had a lifelong interest in aviation and loved to see the Hughes helicopter and the PBY when they used them. I ended up being an aircraft mechanic. I also have had a facination for the undersea world too. To this day I still have some of his books and two model kits, one of Calypso and the other the PBY.
What's the red paste that they put on the stem?
+M King The paste is a mixture of putty and red lead and usually thinned down with linseed oil to get a suitable consistency.

funny to see it's being rebuild here in oak , it was oregon pine to start .... but never build to last . now the ship seems to be in turkey . it's true this is a monument but in memory perhaps better than in reality. lets try and find out what is her state now ...

The ship was in severe disrepair in 1996 prior to it's sinking and the ensuing years have not done her any favors. Albert Falco, a crew member on many of Cousteau’s missions, was quoted in 2006 as saying: “Everything that is not rusted is rotten and everything that’s not rotten is rusted.”
There's no future if you don't remember the past. The Calypso era brought the aqualung apparatus to stardom and Cousteau told us about the undersea discoveries with all the caveats.
What struck me is how a whole life of expedition and TV shows and celebrities that went on his boat are all gone. I grew up watching this man. All that was is no longer, such is life. To be honest, this is no longer his boat. Nearly everything needs replacing so this is really a different boat now.

I have a piece of wood looks like oak to me with Calypso bilge strake plate on it. My ex wife sold it to me for 30 bucks. I have no idea if it is a real piece of the Calypso but cool to show around

Mine sweepers were made of wood in order to not set off magnetic mines they were trying to remove.
@@bitsnpieces11 And they were also some of the most expensive ships in the Navy as the need for removal of any magnetic "signature" led to the use of non-ferrous materials in everything including engines, winches , valves .chain etc etc.

I think she should have cleaned up enough to sink as an artificial reef so divers could have experienced the dive that would have let them stand on the hallowed decks. That ship is why most divers became divers in the first Place.OWSI 165870.

My absolute deepest respect for those who undertake a wooden project of this magnitude. I can’t understand why France has not declared this ship as a national treasure and taken control of the whole damn thing, not letting it wasted due to some family drama. To all other: Never buy a wooden boat.

What has been below the water line is usually quite good, it is worse with what is above the water line, but she'll be like new .
