I was a longtime contributor to the Cousteau Society, and proud of it. I used to fight fires up in Alaska in the late 60's and was living in Anchorage when Calypso visited to re-supply for a trip into northern waters for a film they were making. I happened to take a walk down to the dock area on a day off and there was the Calypso and all her crew, wearing their red knit caps. I happened to be standing near a bollard when the ship was due to cast off and I slacked the line and threw it to the deck hand on Calypso and Captain Cousteau was there and waved to me in thanks.

I grew up in the 60's, I'd couldn't wait for Cousteau's show back then, I grew up on the coast so the ocean was a part of my life, but seeing the Calypso going to distant oceans was exciting, great memories. Thank you.

In 1970 my friend and I got to talk to Mr Cousteau on board the Calypso while in Long Beach California. He was very gracious along with his son Phillipe. Let us wander around the ship, even went down the bow observation bubble. Calypso is a lot smaller than it looks on TV

It was by watching jaques coutsteau programs on TV that sparked my interest in diving in the 60's and 70's. I became diving officer of various BSAC clubs here in the UK and dived wrecks around the world including the German High season fleet in Scapa Flow when diving was much more basic than it is today. What a great man.

Calypso wax part of my childhood. I loved Jacques Cousteau and his crew. I learned so much. My parents would watch as well. I loved the dolphin that followed the ship...Krystal. I just fell in love with dolphins. I have a lovely stuffed dolphin filled with rosemary and lavender. He's a lovely blue and I call him Krystobal in honor of Jaques Costeau. I got teary eyed seeing Calypso restored to her former glory. Go Calypso. John Denver memorialized her so well.

I'm hearing John Denver's Calypso I had to post it here. He captures the Joy we all felt as children watching the adventures of this great ship and crew. "To sail on a dream on a crystal clear Ocean, to ride on the crest of a wild raging storm. To work in the service of life and the living, in search of the answers to questions unknown. to be a part of the movement and part of the growing, part of beginning to understand. Aye Calypso, the place's you've been to, the things that you've shown us, the stories you tell. Aye Calypso, I sing to your spirit, the men who have served you so long and so well. "..... Thanks so much to all for preserving this history. Much Love.

I think it has to do with the post-JYC Cousteau Fondation simply does not inspire trust at all... Endless litigation against legitimate owner of the ship and blood relatives of JYC tired the public. If we want this ship to be restored properly, we just need to get rid of the Cousteau Foundation.

There is such a bittersweet note to this restoration. To see her (Calypso) rusting and deteriorating pulls at the hearts of those who grew up joining Costeau's expeditions from our livingrooms. Many of us got teary-eyed when the late John Denver wrote and produced his song "Calypso". She was meant to "teach" not to sit and die with the past. I hope she will continue on her voyages teaching a new generation about oceans and conservation. In the words of John Denver...
"Aye Calypso the places you've been to
The things that you've shown us
    The stories you tell
Aye Calypso, I sing to your spirit
The men who have served you so long and so well"

Saturday's morning i was in front of the television watching captain J.Y. Cousteau and the adventures of Calypso bringing the wanderers of the world and the sea.
Charles Darwin discovered a lot but Cousteau should have world recognition as well, he give us so much and only add a Howard N. Potts medal in 1970 and a Catalonia international award in 1991, this to a man that was so much more, and Calypso should be recognised by UNESCO as world heritage.
Titanic is world heritage and we can't visit.
So many shows and museums about wars and dictators.
Make more about life and discovery.

I have fond memories of the Calypso. When I was stationed in Crete in 1975 the Calypso was docked in Iraklion the entire winter. The crew came out to the AF station to visit and invited us all to the Calypso. We had many parties on board but were told to keep the noise down because Mme. Cousteau was sometimes trying to sleep. Mr. Cousteau was not there for any of this. I remember the tiny helicopter, the cramped galley, the paper cups from Bermuda, the great crew. Good times. Sad to see the ship in this condition.

Had the pleasure of diving Conshelf II out in Sudan. Quite emotional for commercial divers to see where most of what we know began.

That poor boat. She has been neglected for so long. Hopefully when she is restored she will be better than she has been in decades.

How frail all things are in the hands of time, Calypso and her crew friends to us all as children our telivised classroom to the sea a sad sight indeed, hopefully this grand lady of the sea will become again the symbol of all thing wild and free.

As of 2014, she HAS NOT been restored, she is hold up on a barge due to non payment of bills, with barely 30% of the work done. Unless the french government takes over and funds it, Calypso will continue to rot away..

enfant, j'assistais à ces expéditions; mais invitable tout vieillit
When I was a child I saw these traces but undoubtedly, everything ages
Cuando Yo era niño veía estas travesías pero indudablemente todo envejece
