Thank you for sharing, very moving account of the Calypso, but I have to add something very important missing here: Cousteau wasn't the buyer of the ship, the buyer was a "mecenas", a member of the very wealthy Guinness family, who bought the ship and rented it for an indefinitely period of time to J.Y. Cousteau for a symbolic value on 2 conditions: his name must be keep secret, and the ship will always be maintained properly and use for Oceanographic exploration only. After Cousteau passed away, and the Cousteau society was in struggle to restore the ship, the descendants of the original buyer, initiated a legal demand to get back the ship, arguing that the beneficiary of the deal was no longer alive, and the ship wasn´t take care properly. But finally the second wife of J.Y. Cousteau, who was the owner of all Cousteau Society/Foundation rights, won the battle. But, sadly, may be too late, due to the passing time for a ship who was virtually abandoned for a long time, after being under water (with all that it means) and later the restoration process itself became a nightmare of financial and technical problems with the contractors and yards involved. Today the Calypso is no more than just a memory of those who witnessed all of it´s travels and adventures. Almost impossible that the ship will be restore, and even in the remote possibility, surely will be a Museum ship, and never will sail again. Not the right end for such a noble ship. Regards
Thank you for your information. I was unaware of that. I knew there were legal battles with the ship after the passing of Cousteau and what you said makes sense. But when Cousteau had gotten Calypso he was shown as purchasing her so I thought it was his ship. Thanks again for the info.
I grew up on the coast so I love the ocean, I spent my childhood in it and on it, Cousteau was my favorite show back then by far, to me the Calypso was a magic ship. Thank you

love watching jacque cousteau documentaries in the 70's and 80s on our zenith tv. we had a family friend who worked on the calypso and the serenade and to once in a blue moon to catch a glimpse of someone you knew working with the cousteau's made it even more exciting to watch for a kid from jersey

One fact is not correct, the vessel was not bought by Cousteau but by Thomas Loel Guinness who leased it out to Cousteau for one Franc a year. The RV Calypso changed ownership in 2006 as Loel Guinness “sold” the vessel for one Franc to the Cousteau Society.

English has far fewer of those funny spellings, but think of all our words with a silent "gh": night (nite), light (lite), daughter (dawter), etc.

Mine sweepers are made of wood because many WW2 sea mines were magnetic, and would attach themselves to the hulls of ships before exploding. Minesweepers are made of wood, and all fasteners and metal rails, pipes, etc are made of non-ferrous metal to eliminate any possible magnetic attraction.
There were several kinds of ships/boats made from wood, from the WWII era... For example, the PT boats such as JFK served on had a wooden hull, or the LCVP (AKA Higgins boats), used for amphibious landings such as the Normandy invasion were made of plywood.
Please allow me to express some truths to you in an effort to help you. You have an interesting subject here. Mr. Cousteau led an interesting life. However, when you mispronounce words, especially common names of places, you sound uneducated, and frankly, the video becomes unwatchable. It is MAR-SAY, not MAR-SELL-EZ. I was on the radio for 12 years. I did not have access to online pronunciation guides. I had to call city halls or others to learn the proper pronunciation. I wish you the best and hope you grow your channel, but please, double check your pronunciation. If you are using an AI narrator, there are ways to fool the AI into proper pronunciation. You can learn those tricks online. All the best to you. I hope you accept this as constructive criticism to help you grow and not as a slam.
