The story of the Wendigo I grew up with (as a Native): Three hunters went out to get food for their tribe just before the heart of winter. They were tracking caribou, which led them into deeper into the close by mountains. As they drew closer to their prey, a large snow storm began, forcing them to seek shelter in a cave. The storm grew wilder and wilder outside of the den, so they built a fire to keep warm and went to sleep. The morning came and went, snow almost entirely covering the entrance to the cave. As much as they wished to leave, they knew it would mean certain death. Days passed and they grew hungrier and hungrier. They'd long run out of options and they were on the edge of starvation. One of the hunters died in the night and his friends found his cold, lifeless body when they first opened their eyes. So struck with hunger, they feasted on their past friend. Instead of feeling full and satisfied, with every bite they took they became hungrier and less human. The hair fell from their heads and their teeth grew sharp. Driven insane by his hunger, one of the hunters plunged his bone knife into his companion's chest, not even waiting for his heart to stop before sinking his teeth into the flesh. He was hungrier than he had been ever before and looked nothing like himself. Greed had corrupted his spirit and even now he roams the mountains, only growing hungrier and hungrier, cursed to an eternity of suffering.

I had an Irish grandma who used to tell my brother and I about the tween places. You know, like how at twelve until one you weren't supposed to stand in doorways or in front of mirrors because it made it easier for the things that exist in the dark relms "the tween places," to grab you and pull you in. Also, to be careful and protect ourselves from the things that could come out. It would be great if you could do some stories about that.

Gail Pinto Mostly she meant the Unseelie, but she'd use the "tween places" to describe the dimensions that exist next to ours, but only touch in specific places and specific times, so she also talked about the dark things that existed in those relms that were neither seelie, unseelie, or human.

Watched a hell load of horror films after, but none of them topped that off; I still hate looking into mirrors in poorly lit rooms. And frankly, mirrors are just creepy things conceptually. There's you, and then there's your reflection, which is just a weird symmetrical negative of yourself. And a fine film of glass separating the two. XD
Ive heard of that too, half my family is irish and the other half german and those kinds of stories are common. ☺

People arrive at conclusions and world views off a bunch of factors, everything from environment to personal histories. And sometimes knowing a person can give you reasons to doubt them. Like for example, I know my mother is a chronic pathological liar. So I know better than to take her word on basically anything, and to take her claims with almost no value to them until proven otherwise. It's because I know her, that I'm skeptical of her claims.

I'm Native American in northern Canada. I was raised traditional. Those dirt mounds are a one of three things. Big ass ant hills, native grave sites. (especially if they seemed burnt, means a ceremony took place.) or! They're "markers" and my grand parents always told us kids to stay away from them, that we don't want to be anywhere near them day or night, and if we came across them in the bush, to leave immediately and pretend we didn't see them and don't look up.

I'm extremely curious now. I've been thinking of moving further north myself, but hearing about some of the things that reside there, I'm starting to rethink (though the pull is still strong). What would the mounds be markers for? I have heard of them being associated with (I think) some kind of reptilian, though my first thought would be unmarked burials, and being on the shield myself, burials would be my first thought. But your grandmother's mention of markers is interesting

In Germany you usually have Knecht Ruprecht not the Krampus .
The Krampus originates from Austria and I personally have had stories told to me about Krampus ever since I was little . ( I am half Austrian) Knecht Ruprecht is the "servant" or Nikolaus's ( Nikolaus is basically Santa ) "right hand man" who abducts disobedient children .

It depends on how you see it I guess. If you see it when it has a human possess you are ok (if you considered encountering the damn thing has ok) but if you see its spirit form you are fucked. Since it apparently does not have a fix form just seeing it will turn you insane, probably because your mind will try to make sense of it but will not be able to.

When I was younger, about 7 or so, my grandmother would love to get story books to read to me before bed. She often picked ones without really looking to see what the end was or anything. One I will never forget was literally the Legend of the Wendigo, although the story ends with the death of one singular Wendigo (who turns into mosquitoes hence why we have them today etc.)
It is stories like this that I have heard since that have really creeped me out, and made me realize that these beings might still be around, and that maybe a 7 year old shouldn't be told about them before bed. D:
The pizza delivery guy story was awesome!!! I live in northeast Ohio. I've been camping and hiking my whole life. The last story creeped me out pretty bad. I've never heard or seen anything like that and I hope I never do.

It doesn't work that way. The Bible specifically says that you either go to Heaven or Hell when you die. Ghosts don't work with Christianity.
