Thank you for your help. , way to cold up here Pennsylvania to hook up , ear muffs on the motor , to test it out , when the weather warms up , give it a go . Hope I got it right. Thank you for your help much appreciated, first timer on this thing , your video was a great help. Thanks again.
Some of the TH-cam video say keep in neutral, and others say put in forward ,or reverse. So I just left in neutral..will find out when my impeller repair kit arrives next week and I will reinstall it .. thanks for the reply much appreciated..
Great video! I installed a new impeller on my Optimax and rotated the shaft to get the lower to fit correctly. When I ran my boat on the trailer to confirm it worked the prop wouldn't spin when I gave it throttle. I finished in the dark and assumed that if the shaft fit and the lower unit was flush I was good to go but will give it another go in a couple months. Any advice appreciated and keep up the awesome work!
You can feel the 3 selector positions on the lower by twisting the selector on the lower unit. Just twist it to the position the handle is in then put the lower one I prefer in forward gear
Is that miles per hour tube that’s hanging down coming out of the same hole is the shift shaft.? I noticed there was another little hole in the front of that in the upper casing. Do I run that hose through that or do I keep it around the shift shaft
im buying a 2002 triton tr21 from a guy locally who hit a shoal on the st lawerence river. needs a lower unit, buying the boat for 5k im gonna order a new lower unit asap.. thanks for the video
Great video. , I am in the process right now to install a new impeller repair kit , I have my lower unit out and , but I haven’t reinstalled it into the power head yet. , I took my lower unit out in neutral, I hope I can just put it back like I took it out, without any issues.. any extra advice would be appreciated. Great video gave me some good ideas. Thank you.
Sure the shifter where it goes onto the lower unit you can turn that lever clockwise and counter clockwise a little that would be forward and reverse then just engage the handle in the boat to forward. If your lower unit is in neutral however if your drivesplines for the lower unit dont match up to the upper you cannot spin the prop to make them line up making it a little harder to reattach the lower to the powerhead. That's why either forward or reverse should be engaged and not changed during removal and reinstallation
I have the 175 PRO XS OPTIMAX DFI and I started this job but only have two nuts on the side, 1 in the front of the motor and then the anode bolts. I can't for some reason budge the lower unit off the motor. Not sure what I am missing.
Hey there is a hole or notch in the leading edge of the gear case of my OPTIMAX PRO-XS 150 just above the prop "bullet". I've never noticed it before and was concerned that it was damage. However on a mercury video there is a brief shot that indicates it is "as built" can you confirm? I thought I could make out the same notch/hole on your gear case in this video. Also, if it is normal, what function does it perform?
Thanks. Can send a pic if you supply an email address? Either way, two online examples seem to confirm and I will talk to a Merc dealer today if I can. Merry Xmas!
One more question ? I put my lower unit back in since I took it out in neutral, I put it back in neutral, little harder then I thought, but I got it back in , I tried my shift lever handle put it in forward like you did in video, then back to neutral, then reverse, seems ok. I hope that was right??? If the splines on the shaft and shift lever was not lined up I would not be able to put the unit back together right , am I correct about that? Thank you
Forward is what most say but it's the same as if you throw it in reverse. If it's in nuetral and the shaft isn't lining up when you spin the prop the shaft won't spin so forward or reverse is better
Manually spin the gear selector on the lower unit until you find the middle spot. Also spin the input shaft a little while raiding the lower unit. If you put the boat into forward amd the lower unit into forward when you spin the prop shaft the input shaft to the lower unit will spin also and that will help getting everything lined up
You can put some grease on the 5 bolts that hold the lower unit up to prevent corrosion, , but I do not due to taking it off every season for an impellar ur if I hit something
Jerry Owens I would recommend anti-seize because stainless bolts can and will bind to stainless nuts. Stainless bolts also corrode with aluminium. Both of which can cause seizing between threads, hence why anti-seize is so good. No-one likes tight bolts or worse, broken bolts.
One best Mercury outboard How to Videos out there. Very deliberate showing every step. Not skipping steps like most How too's on TH-cam. Great job ! 😊

What did you do when putting the lower unit back in?

Do I necessarily need to remove the oil from the lower unit too before removing it ?

The rear bolt, on my Optimax 150hp, that is accessable once you've removed the anode, doesn't have a washer. Is that correct?
Thank u very much good info

I know this is for a 2017 Optimax-XS. Would this be the same as the 2011 OptiMax-XS 2 Stroke 150HP? Your video is very done. THanks!
Should by 95% the same the mercury lower units are very similar. I've done 25, 90, 75,115 and 200hp waterpumps and they are extremely similar to this

I would need a photo to figure out what you are talking about.
Go to 11 minutes 20 seconds and watch from there pause it at 1126 I can see the notch in the video you are talking about

Did you put the motor in forward gear prior to removing lower unit? That part was a little confusing. Thank you for the video.
Yes I put it in forward before dropping it
@@lunkerdunkerbaits4064 I would have to be there to help it should go up and give it a little shake it should go in.

You are correct! And if you dont have any speedometer reading the black tube is pinched or not completely on I did that on mine
Before you started taking the lower gear apart, did you put your shifter in Forward or Neutral? Which would be easier?
Forward is what most say but it's the same as if you throw it in reverse. If it's in nuetral and the shaft isn't lining up when you spin the prop the shaft won't spin so forward or reverse is better
@@BSBASSIN Thank you! I will give it a go this weekend!
Great video. What torque did you use on these 4 bolts that drops the lower unit when you reinstalled them? Thanks in advance..
i see you can't get a torque wrench on this anyhow, so I think I know the answer to the question. Thanks.
Sorry I was away for some time. Pretty tight for the bolts that go to the lower
I left mine in neutral when disassembling any tips on getting it to line up?

The shifter on the lower unit isn’t currently in neutral if I left the motor in neutral? Or are you just saying to verify it?
@@richardsalazar1937 put boat in same gear as motor. Spin prop shaft as lifting unit up into position it should find itself and slide all the way up.
@@BSBASSIN I’ll be working on it when I get off work and If I could message you after work about it

Did you use any lube or thread lock on bolts when rebuilding.

Great job
Do you know the torque spec for the lower unit bolts?
I'd have to look it up it's been a while
55 ft-lbs
I thought you were not supposed to shift in reverse and forward with the motor not running?
It's fine to do so
But most companies advise against it
No they don't!!! I'm factory Cert Merc tech. This is whats tought in school by Mercury! Great video but cutting into my job. 😢
There is not enough light in the video to see what’s being done.
Sorry I do the best I can.
That’s really called a coupler
I was wondering why you took your anodes off
Are these questions for real? Take your outboard motor to cert tech please. Do Not touch your Anodes.
