I cant tell you how many times i fought with the lower unit to get it to engage. i finally found that if i shift the engine to reverse and do like likewise with the lower unit i was more successful in getting the shift shaft to engage properly. great video
When i used to do these a lot I would put the shifter in gear and leave the gear case in gear since that’s where it wanted to be anyway. Also then I could rotate the driveshaft by turning prop to help with engagement
Exactly, that’s another way you can do it. Only these new engines have electric shift actuators and they will stay in neutral as long as the engine is not running. Your method is perfectly ok when dealing with engine with mechanical shifting to be able to put the engine in forward using the throttle control. Thanks for sharing, it’s always good to have more than one perspective. Take care.
I spent many hours last night challenging my Christianity with a Verado 250 lower unit install...after insulting my wife and having a conversation with the Holy Spirit...I removed the grease from the receiving portion for the shift shaft receiving splins in the engine and noted the position of the splines...my lower unit was in gear...and the splines were positioned (while in gear) in the mirror image of the splines in the engine...by God's grace, I turned the short shaft shifter into neutral to slightly offset the splines and she slid up into the engine (confirmed I was COMPLETELY in neutral by spinning the prop shaft and listening for any ticking)...BUT...I forgot to install the speedo tube and it was hanging out of the starboard side of the unit...had to drop her again slightly and install the tube...SUGGESTION TO THOSE WHO ARE SUFFERING THROUGH THIS LOWER UNIT INSTALL...ATTACH A RATCHETING TIE-DOWN TO YOUR COWLING, loop it under the prop housing, TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT WHILE YOU FINAGLE THE SPEEDO HOSE AND CHASE NEUTRAL ON THE SHORT SHAFT AND DON'T GET YOUR WIFE INVOLVED...YOU'LL SLEEP BETTER! Thank you for the video...EXCELLENT...I only wish I had seen it yesterday evening BEFORE installing the lower unit.
Hi Rick, you have no idea how much I laughed at your experience, and believe me I can totally relate. Yes, there has been times things get so hectic I’ve been forced to use the straps you mentioned. Thank you so much for watching and for sharing, you made my day. 😂😂 Take care
just replace pump on my EFI 100 2.1L, it was a pitty to align shift shaft, I need an assistant to sligly move shift lever.next ill will try open cover on the upper unit.

Do you have to drain the engine oil before you take off lower unit?
Hi James, Not in the new models no, I do it as a habit. Thank you for watching. 👍🏻
Hi there. What’s the year when you don’t have to remove the oil before dropping the lower? I have 2018 350s. 6 inline.
What about 350 HP sir
Tq sir
Just the tip ???😂😂. Why not make two of those those gasket guides? It seems like with just one it could move
Yes, absolutely you can. Thank you for watching. Take care.👍🏻
