There is a scene where the little girl is crying hysterically and it's some of the best acting I've ever seen from a young actor. I hope she has a bright future ahead of her because an Oscar is inevitable.

@Mr Banker hey congrats on your dumb comment. She didn’t just cry (which is hard to fake for anyone), she was able to hit that level of hysteria needed for how distressing being violently beaten for no reason. But not only that, she managed to get across the characters ‘fuck you’ nature with her expressions. It was real, layered, amazing for such a young actor and believe it or not you mollusc, not something every girl can do

My only real complaint was not getting ANY backstory on why the Grabber did what he did, or what he was trying to accomplish, but I guess it 's true to reality that we don't always get a real definitive answer on why killers do what they do. Hereditary creeped me out even more later on when I learned some people that suffer with mental illness see projections of light that come and go from nowhere.
So when the characters see rays of light you're left wondering: mental illness or genuine possession?
Of course, if you see the movie you know how it ends, but questioning one's own sanity is a towering pillar storyline in the annals of horror.
It was also brought up in a Halle Berry movie from 2003 called Gothika. Gothika was very good and likeable but not as good as Hereditary IMO.

Bro everyone must be on crack because I thought the movie was terrible. Acting was average and overall the movie just wasn't really scary. The character setup is really strange they put a lot of emphasis on the family relationship and dad and they throw it all away until the end when the dad magically turns it around. On the other hand the brother is introduced 3/4ths of the way through the movie and has 3 minutes of screentime yet is one of the most pivotal characters in the whole plot. There's also absolutely no explanation for any of the superpowers or background of the villain or the phone which results in things basically "just happening" in the movie. Instead they have to rely on cheap jumpscares and a joker type of villain. Cherry on top was the questionable disney movie ending which both made no sense towards the movie and was flat-out cringe. Honestly wouldn't be that bad of the movie if it wasn't marketed as some intense mind-bending thriller horror.

The onoy who kidnaps said it wouldnt kill Finn it wasnt him. Happy mask, mean dad mask during naughty boy test. Him waiting for the kids with the belt likely something that happened to him. Him telling ghem that he was in the basement for some time once as well etc...)

Ever since I was really small, I've always had this recurring nightmare of a ringing payphone in the basement of a run-down old hospital, or school, and when I answer it, nobody's there, just the phone off-the-hook noise blaring: "Eh eh eh eh eh eh eh eh...."
(Anybody here old enough to remember when that was a thing?)
I'm not exactly sure why, but this dream always filled me with an immense feeling of terror.
So I think I will definitely try to see this movie, when most horror movies I find to be pretty boring and predictable, because I'm not afraid of special effects.
But something like this might actually tug at something primal from my childhood that actually used to terrify me.
Should be fun, if i can get past the silly mask.
Otherwise, I was the kid who stepped on every crack, and played bloody Mary in front of all the other kids, just to prove to them that they were just being stupid. 🤣
I would influence the ouiji cursor and the person who claimed to be able to tell the difference between a spirit and a person cheating claimed that it was a spirit. 😜
But a ringing phone in an empty room that has nothing on the other end when I answer it…. THAT prickles all the hairs on my spine...

I have a theory that the grabber was suffering from split personality disorder. If my hunch is correct he likely has at least six personality’s, represented by the mask he is wearing. There is of course the full masks, one with a smile and one frowning, as well the half mask versions. One that has the top have of the mask only, and one with no mask. The no mask one is interesting because when he grabs fin, the grabbers face seems bone white as if he is wearing white face paint. Although if I am mistaken it could be the glasses he was wearing, as far as I can recall we do not see the grabber wearing glasses at all for the rest of the movie implying that he doesn’t need them. This is further supported by at the end when fin removes the grabbers mask and he breaks down without it. Even when the grabber first brings fin to the basement the grabber tells fin that he won’t hurt fin, notice he said that while wearing the full mask with the smile, and when he was playing naughty boy, the grabber was wearing the frown mask, and at the the end only the horns.

Things that were great in this movie: the child acting, the world building, Ethan hawke, the suspense, the right amount of blood. Plot wise it may have been a tad predictable and I wish there had been some twist or exploration of the concept of this phone, but it worked.
One thing I want to add is that they included the PERFECT amount of backstory in certain scenes. Like when Gwen learns how her mom was driven to suicide by the dreams, yet still feeling like she has to use them to find Finney, that’s serious stuff most adults probably couldn’t deal with let alone a kid. Or when we learn that the Grabber can hear the phone but pretends he doesn’t, and that he was in that basement somehow as a child. Starts to point at why he might be so mentally broken without giving away too much. Both these details really add to the intensity and mystery of the film, without coming across as unexplained plot points at all. Well done.

The kid used the cable to trip the grabber, the hole to trap him, the chord to straggle him, and he even used the meat from the freezer to distract the dog. I haven't seen or heard much at all about this movie, but i felt very strongly that it was set in the '70s. Now, hearing you confirmed that is actually kinda exciting. The outdoors, walking down the street scenes and Ethan in the mask gave me strong vibes of the walking home after school scene in the original Halloween. Also a bit Smashing Pumpkins 1979. Nostalgia, man.

This movie had potential to be fantastic but far toooo many plot holes and if it character development it would have been perfect. Like I said had potential but didn't fulfill it.

I thought "Dark Water" with Jennifer Connelly was good in slowly building up the ghost story - the whole atmosphere of the creepy, rundown apartment building where most of the film took place was very effective.

Lot of plot missing. No flush out of the mother super natural powers. Why the dad just abusive? What the super natural connection with the phone. I understand different pieces overall come together in the end. Why didn’t he just shank him in the throat when he had a chance. Sure we don’t need details of murder flushed out. But the movie overrated honestly. The tone wasn’t there. Child actors are child actors. But still could of been better

In my theater we were all clapping when the main protagonist started being the shit out of the Grabber!! But the only thing I was scared was for the kid not surviving at the end, like there always doing the slow motion trade where it get intense and your in your head wondering if the kid will survive or no which this time the main protagonist survives, but I still couldn't stop shaking after that because you know movies like these always try to say a ,message saying" oh your safe and you survived" but then something happens and that tell us audience like " b# you though it was over yet". So yeah this movie kept me jumping on my seat throughout the entire time. I rate this movie 8/9
Because I would have liked it they had more action scenes in it but overall, Great horror film!!😨👏🎬

The two things I found kinda 'off' with the movie were:
    1. The first time the boy sees a floating ghost body, he is not shocked at all. He is so damn calm.
    2. After foiling the boy's first escape attempt, the grabber doesn't do anything to increase the security of the dungeon, or figure out who or what helped him.
    3. The movie heavily borrows cinematographic elements from several pop-culture items like It, Stranger things etc.
I know these are three things.

My main question is: was Jeremy Davies character supposed to be redeemed at the end? Because he wasn’t. I felt a little bad for him, but not enough to excuse what he did.
Also, I get the pedigree here, but does the story have to include EVERY Stephen King trope from the alcoholic to the bullies to the psychic… I would not be shocked to learn this was just one of King’s unpublished works that he just gave to his son and said “here! Just publish this as your own”.
The freakiest moment was when The Grabber tells the protagonist that he won’t have to do anything he won’t want to… suggesting a likely molestation aspect to his crimes.

Also when he first brought Finn to the basement, that "he" wouldnt hurt him ( the personality tied to that mask) but that it was someone else who would, hinting at multiple personalities which would later be further confirmed.
