This is why I’d love a Robert Eggers adaptation of The Odessey/The Iliad. He could totally make Odysseus the hero in a way that doesn’t feel watered down or tries to make him relatable to modern standards.
It's awesome to hear the action getting so much praise! I was on this stunt team for 4 months. I was a Knattleikr game player and Berserker in the Slav village raid, and did a few bits of stunt rigging. I've seen the movie 3 times now and it gets better each time. Rob is rad to work with, keep an eye on that name!
The fact that Eggers also has all his sets hand built with similar tools from that time is mindblowing and makes watching the movie even more special absolutely stunning and engaging movie. 10/10
Not to mention the garb and armor was hand made using the techniques of the period. The attention to detail is mind-blowing. If people are offended by the dialog and subject matter as presented in this film, maybe they needed to be offended by it.
From the first scene full of terrible CGI sailing ships, to the alienating story line, to the obvious placement of the necklace to be used as the focal reference in a time jump, to the giant Viking 'slave' which nobody sees as suspicious, it's embarrassingly bad
Another thing that was absolutely marvelous about this movie was the music. The Norse drums, horns, and chanting were perfect in building the atmosphere for every large event in the film. Definitely one of my new favorite movie soundtracks
I think Eggers really excells with his music/soundtrack. The Witch and Lighthouse had the same overbearing and pounding soundtrack that I felt added to the atmosphere.
In that final battle when Amleth primally grunts to deal the finaI blow, I wanted to scream along, it felt visceral and earned. The bloodshed and trippy nature of the narrative is something else

As far as revenge tales go, would highly recommend "I Saw The Devil" Might be one of my favourite revenge tales after Count of Monte Cristo (a phenomenal book)

My wife and I got married 13 years ago this August. My nephew showed us your revenge of the fallen video right after we got married and we've been watching religiously ever since. I ABSOLUTELY loved it. The only thing I'd change... Is some of the fight choreography was clunky/mistimed. But it was so immersive and true to what it was I didn't care. That's my only improvement.
While the production quality and story-telling are first rate (as we have come to expect from Eggers), it is the performances that were incredible. Skarsgard was a beast, Anya Taylor Joy was at the heart of this film, Willem Dafoe and Björk were perfectly deployed and omg Nicole Kidman! GREAT stuff.

What I love from Robert Eggers is that he has a distinct style, storytelling method. It reminds me of Tarantino not style wise but the fact that when you see a Tarantino film you know he directed it, it’s the same with Eggers
The first few minutes of this film I was hooked. Never before have I actually been so sucked into a movie where I felt like I was literally IN the world and experiencing things going on.
2022 has some bangers for sure. Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Northman, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, The Batman. My wallet is definitely taking a dent.

Everything Everywhere and Massive Talent were awesome! I’m not a superhero fan but I’d actually say the new Batman is miles better than the massively overrated The Dark Knight. The Northman was one of the most grand scale films I’ve seen and simultaneously one of the most boring.
I will always appreciate a Viking Movie that manages to get you invested while not pulling any punches about their horrific nature. It shows you without trying to moralize or apologize for it, it simply is a part of how they are and yet you still wind up completely invested into the characters themselves.
I like how it's different then his other movies but that's the point. He researchs history and builds a story around that. This was told how a Viking epic would be told. It's a revenge story but hidden inside are stories of humanity and how things are not always how they seem. All of it is guided by Norse mythology and beliefs
The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite books of all time and has got to be my favorite revenge tale! Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie is another great one
I never had the chance to see The Lighthouse in the theatre, but I did for The Northman. It's such an easy world to get immersed in because it feels like they just brought cameras back to 900AD and filmed vikings. And if you're immersed, the music and the sound design really adds to the atmosphere of this world. There are so many moments where I got chills in this movie, and some of that was due to feeling the sound resonating up through my feet at certain moments. The plot is basically Hamlet and isn't anything new in that sense, but it tackles complex themes of revenge and childhood naivety, while being an audio-visual spectacle with incredible production design. Nothing feels rushed but nothing over stays its welcome either. As Jeremy mentioned in the review, the story is about Amleth avenging his father's death: that death happens like less than 10 minutes into the film. They do so well at establishing what this world is, the kind of father Amleth's father is, and they don't drag it on unnecessarily. I would also say that, having seen the film, there are moments at the start that gain a whole new perspective once the story has been told. I've not really been watching movies that have come out this year; I hope there are other films as good or better, but I strongly doubt it. If The Northman isn't at least nominated for a bunch of awards this Oscars, especially after Don't Look Up was nominated for anything last year, I'll have lost all faith. The only thing I'd change about The Northman is there are two moments where text appears to establish time: they feel unnecessary. You could argue that it's useful to know the precise year, for the sake of establishing the film's atmosphere and setting, but the second one saying "Years later" is so unnecessary as the editing already tell us that that would be the case. So, yeah, 137 minutes of film, and only about 5 seconds of it bothered me
Favorite revenge tale: Count of Monte Christo. The book is stellar. The movie..... I've seen it no less than 2 dozen times. I love the movie. Stellar cast. Beautifully shot. And just an all around brilliant adaptation of a brilliant story.
It is amazing. And although I respect 🙏 everyone's opinion and their right to them..... I cannot imagine what issue anyone could POSSIBLY have with this masterpiece.

I was so happy to see the mysticism in the movie, and I think it was blended within the "real" elements perfectly. If you love Icelandic sagas, you'll most likely enjoy this film. The pacing is unusual and the budget seems to have largely been spent on the first 30 minutes, but I felt that in a way that enhanced the sense of unpredictability. I didn't know where the story was ultimately going until it got there, and that's a hard thing to pull off. Anya Taylor-Joy--my goodness, she's just wonderful.
I was just so happy to see a depiction of Vikings that actually showed them as the irredeemable bastards that they were instead of some weird white-washed version (looking at you, Assassin’s Creed Brohalla). Beautiful film.
They were no more irredeemable than plenty other groups before and after them. They were even more redeemable than some anyway. Not to mention Vikings weren't even all one central group, they came from different nations and some were known to be worse than others. My own Viking ancestry comes from Vikings that literally came and assimilated with the Irish and didnt slaughter and pillage everyone lol
This movie is fucking amazing! Me and my girlfriend went to see it on Saturday and we both loved it! Alexander Skarsagard absolutely kills it as Amleth, the fight scenes when they happen are brutal and intense as shit. If you love Viking mythology you’ll love it. The movie is 2 hours 20 I believe and me and my girlfriend weren’t bored at all. Just need to say this has probably the best preparation for a battle sequence I’ve ever seen in a film and I felt like I was with them, definitely my favourite film of the year so far 🤘
Personally my favorite in the last four at least . It was phenomenal. Tell everyone to go see it so Hollywood will take more chances to make good movie's . Also I love watching people cry at the end of movies, especially my girlfriend. I know I'm a A hole but it's funny to me .
Just came out of it, and DAMN ! What a cinematic experience ! The images and music of this movie will haunt me for a while ! Oddly enough, it reminded me a great deal of A24 John Lowery's The Green Knight, that came out a year ago (and was also a formidable cinematic experience to me). Similar oniric and mystical vibes, with some slow panning shots that reveal that all you see is not necessarily real. Everybody in it contributed to make it a masterpiece (and it was quite fun to have just finished Moon Knight, and see Ethan Hawke here in a much darker -and shorter- role). Skarsgaard is super impressive and guttural (at some point, I was even worrying about his vocal chords, the guy can scream !), and he reminded me of a Conan the Barbarian of today. Nicole Kidman was deliciously evil, her scene truly sent chills in my veins. And Anya Tailor Joy was just hauntingly beautiful. The DP Jarin Blaschke was a true magician, with countless shots that could fall under the "every frame a painting" saying. And gosh the music ! It was a true standout, almost like another character of the movie. Each beat of the battle drums were really pumping blood in my veins ! It's truly rare to feel such a raw movie , yet oddly poetic and sensitive in all its violence ! Massive respect to Robert Eggers to have been the maestro of all these fantastic elements and have been able to strike such a raw yet delicate balance.
I thought that too. I love The Green Knight and this just as much/ if not more/ equally/ can't decide! The cinematic gorgeousness and mythical elements are an absolute joy. It's not often I want to go and see a movie again right away, but those two movies make me feel that way.
Of course we're all still clicking on your face. You're the every day person reviewer basically. I don't care about technical issues of a movie. I just want to hear someone's opinion so I can determine if I want to spend my time watching a movie. Plus you're just super charismatic and fun to watch :)
I do get the impression this was marketed as more of an action film than it is which is maybe why some people were a bit perplexed by it. I have to mention the score and sound, because it's amazing. This is definitely a 'cinematic film', something that is undoubtedly better experienced in the cinema where you can feel the bass rumbling around you. You got through the whole review without mentioning Shakespeare or Hamlet, Shakespeare's Hamlet is based on the same saga that The Northman is based on - The legend of Amleth.
Eggers is now officially one of those guys who I will automatically buy a ticket for every time. The film is beautiful and stark, and the performances and pacing were on point imo. One thing that was hard to wrap my head around was what KIND of story it is-- At times it felt like a grounded, realistic story of norse life in 900AD, but at other times it leaned heavily into classic fantasy tropes like magic swords and prophecies. It would be in classic Eggers "slow burn" mode for a while, and then suddenly a series of brief adventurey vignettes would vault us into the next "slow burn" chapter. It was a bit odd in that sense. Really that's the only thing I can fault about it. It did not have nearly as much humor as The Lighthouse, but I don't think its bleakness made it a slog either- though I can see that being difficult for some folks to grapple with.
Completely agree. Eggers is shooting up to the top of my favourite directors list. He seems devoted to capturing the past with minimal filmic concessions. He manages to create an experience which is comprehendible to a modern day audience but still shows a really detailed, gritty, harrowing, shamanic, unflinching glimpse of what the past might have really felt like for its inhabitants. The line between reality and the supernatural is frequently too blurred to see clearly. Mythology is not a comforting fairy tale but fundamental to a meaningful existence. I love what he does and I loved the Northman.

@@curly_wyn I guess I'd disagree with the premise that certain directors are more or less deserving of admiration. The fact that I like Eggers work, does not mean I don't like the work of anyone else. Also, I don't believe that the big established names are automatically worthy of undying praise -- and a top spot in everyone's favourites list -- just because they are well known. Because Eggers is a relative newcomer does not make him less deserving of praise. Crucially though, in my opinion, I think Eggers has yet to miss. I have been blown away by all three of his major releases. I loved The Witch. It was creepy, foreboding and haunting. I thought it was really impressively handled as a first major release with quite a delicate and supernatural plot. Same with The Lighthouse. Two actors in black and white in one small building was gripping, beguiling, maddening from start to finish. Eggers really knows how to the visual and audial tools at his disposal to tell an engaging and rich story. However, principally, I think he does a stellar job of getting incredible performances out of practically every actor he works with (no matter if he's working with big names (The Northman) or children (The Witch)). Now this isn't even to touch of the inherent subjectivity of art nor the expansiveness of my list of favourite directors. But this reply would get hideously long if I delved into those topics. However, critically, if someone comes along and (in one's opinion) knocks three quite stylistically different films out of the park, that person is doing something right and deserves to be held in high regard.

Hey....Don't watch this movie thinking about the trailer. The trailer made this movie look like Braveheart, and it's not. That's not to say there aren't epic battles. There are. IT's just more of a conflict of revenge, love and hatred. It's also extremely weird. I mean that. If that sounds like your kind of thing, go for it. You won't be disappointed. But if not, you will walk going, "what the fuck did I just watch?" in a bad kind, nay awful, kind of way.
Phenomenal film. I’m grateful to have witnessed such a masterpiece. I want to see more like this. No modern politics, unapologetic, not compromising. I love it.

As revenge tales go, the one that pops up immediately for me is the original Korean version of Old Boy. Still one the more out there plot lines that hits you nicely square in the jaw the first time around when the whole set-piece wraps it up on you.
The Punisher(2004), Payback, Man on Fire, Rogue Assassin, Lucky Number Slevin, Four Brothers, John Wick, Desperado, Mask of Zorro, Gladiator, Parker, Faster, Italian Job, Romeo Must Die, Kill Bill and The Crow are a lot better than Oldboy. Oldboy is too odd, boring and perverse to me.

Watching the Witch and The Lighthouse.. i absolutely loved those movies and the uniqueness of them, i was very skeptical about the Northman. It looks action packed from the trailer and it just didnt seem like a Robert Eggers movie. But holy shit i was wrong. It was totally epic and that dark strange vibe which i love from his movies was all in this . 10/10 movie for me
Will most likely be catching it in theatres next weekend. I saw The Lighthouse in theatres and I'll never forget the awkward laughs and reactions from the audience I was with. Eggers is always a treat, and hearing the actors talk so positively of how he directs makes me confident in his future career just like Villeneuve. The production and cinematography looks amazing.
So glad to hear Eggars knocked it out the park again. I was really nervous about this, it’s seems so many of the indie directors lately make 1 or 2 glorious blow budget films then given something bigger either lose their identity in the studio grind or go full pretentious slop
One of the cinematography aspects that was really captivating but hasn’t been talked about much was in certain sequences when the director had certain scenes single shot, like the village raid. Had that 1917-esque feel which really immerses you in the world of the story
I just got out of the movie myself and I can concur with Jeremy’s conclusion this is one of the better movie experiences I’ve had in a long time and it was really refreshing especially as somebody who’s in post production for a feature medieval epic this is reinvigorated my love for filmmaking and has motivated me to push on in a time where I have been questioning myself and my abilities as a filmmaker
this is a statement towards shitty state of cinema in general, not that this movie was any good because ive seen it and it was awful. Jsut fucking grotesquly bad. I didnt know whether to laugh or cry it was so fucking bad. Nothing in this movie is authentic, least of all the people and the story.

You hit this review head on. I completely agree with everything you said. It's unfortunate google reviewers absolutely threw their reviews to the dogs.
My only criticism is that after all the artistic film techniques in the first third of the movie, the unique aesthetic of the film dramatically transferred to a more modern, generic style of filming which made me slightly disappointed. Yet overall the film was epic and legendary.
Seen it twice now and seriously considering a third! Its a masterpiece imo! The atmosphere, the "sets", the acting, action, costumes and sound/score, everything is fantastic! It has one of the most terrifying scenes I have seen! I don't mean terrifying as a scary movie would do it but how effectively it puts you into that situation and makes you feel terrified like the characters would. I won't spoil what it is but it involves howling and blood! Can't recommend it enough! See it in the theater!

Saw it. It is indeed very well done. Technically everything on point. Directing, acting, set pieces. The atmosphere and music are all top notch. But i don't know if I'll watch it again so soon. This is what i experienced with Nolan's Dunkirk
It did a fantastic job of incorporating elements of legend, myth and Norse/Germanic culture in a way that audiences got the gist without resorting to hour long expositions to teach them. Also there is a particular fight that Norse buffs like myself very much appreciate for its accuracy. If you know, you know.
Great storytelling. What reason did the villages warriors have for pulling a coup on Ethan Hawkes character ? I completely understand Fjolnir and Nicole Kidmans reason for killing him, thats not my issue. But why did the rest of the villages warriors have for helping ambush the king ? Kind of a gaping plothole if u ask me.
@@nizzanator well one it wasn't the whole village it was fjolnir men and the people that supported him. Those were likely warriors who knew their king was wounded since they came back from raiding. This would likely support Fjolnir and his people reasoning to support this. Those who are strong in the viking world lead. Two if you watched plenty of viking shows such as Vikings or other western viking movies betrayal is kinda a big deal. Kings and small groups of villagers always try to overthrow their chieftains. This trope is well known in TV and film despite it not being 100% accurate in real life.

A couple honorable mentions of revenge tales for me are, Payback (Mel Gibson), Fist Of The North Star, Afro Samurai, Magnificent Seven, but the absolute best and one of the best movies period, Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood). Some may argue the movie as a whole isn't technically a revenge tale in the classic sense, but I am mostly referring to the last 3rd or 4th of the film after they beat Ned to death, you watch Eastwood's character slide back into the person we have heard about throughout the film with every word from the prostitute and every slug he takes from the whiskey bottle. And OMG does that film have some of the best phrases or one liners "Hell of a thing killing a man, you take away everything he has or will be" but the absolute best is (Hackman)"You just killed an unarmed man" (Eastwood)"He should arm himself if he's going to decorate his bar with my friend" Shit now I got go watch it again
This review is EXACTLY why I tell people NOT to allow a critic's review to make up your mind about going to see movie's. A buddy of mine who loves these types of TV shows/movies went to see this with his 3 daughter's who also loved the show Vikings etc....Didn't like this movie at all, not one of them. I wasn't going to see it anyway but his review makes it seem worth seeing if your into this genre of movies!🤷🏽♂️🤴🏽
I've only been watching this channel for the past three years, but I'm slowly catching up on the past 13 - the reviews are always enjoyable to watch, even for movies and shows I don't plan on seeing (like this one, sorry to say), since they are well-thought-out, hilarious, and give a pretty balanced take on the experience as a whole. Blue Ruin is one of my favorite revenge tales, mainly because the revenge is had in like the first 15 minutes. I love it because its really a "consequences of revenge" tale.
When I get asked what is my favorite revenge tale, I usually remember Park Chan-Wook's revenge trilogy (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr vengeance, Lady vengeance). They are all pretty good movies, but they all end up being a kick on the throat. We as the audience expect to see a cathartic carnage, but Park shows that things aren't always so simple...
Totally agree on "no down time", everything was moving the plot forward, no fluff no montage or filler just things happening that drive the plot to the ending. Loved it, and yes it was beautiful to watch and listen to... enthralling soundtrack too.
Absolutely loved The Northman, Eggers is quickly becoming one of the all time greats, my man dont miss. My only concern is that this movies doesn't perform well comercially and studios become afraid to accept his project's.
Thank you Jeremy! Heard a few critics before i saw the film myself, been hyped for a while after the past years of viking porn. Eggers is a master artist and a realistic, Symbolically, Mythologically and as you say visceral awakening Primal telling was much needed. Heard a few groups laugh after the film and knew that this age and modernity systems of entertainment / thought placements, that many People wont "get" the movies brilliance. Like the Arena, theyve seen crushed skulls in GoT so they are appauled when Eggers chooses acting and sound over gorey make up and CGI but ey.... I agree fully. Flawless artistic experience 😮🌊🌀
my favourite revenge tale. tragic story of a dad who's wife is murdered, leaving him to fend off an attacker from his children, all of whom die except one, who later get's kidnapped, the father travels all across the world to get his child back, and finds friends along the way.

I love robert eggers with a passion. The witch was my favorite then the lighthouse cane out and that was my favorite then this movie comes in and solidified Eggers as an amazing director.

As for my favorite REVENGE tales, the ones that don't wuss out with a hackneyed last-minute "revenge isn't worth it" message, I'm going old school with the first MAD MAX, DEATH WISH, and the good BATMAN movies.
Watched it tonight. Some people walked out expecting a viking action movie. But it was a revenge fantasy, art piece, Nordic mythological masterful piece of cinema. You're gonna love it.
I agree with you Jeremy. I wasn't too sure after watching 'The Witch', but his style and film making is growing on me. I watched The Northman Yesterday with my daughter and we were sceptical at the beginning, but totally enthralled with the whole movie. A brilliant addition to the art of Cinema and this film could not be made by any other film maker. A+ Excellent. IMO. 👍😊
Definitely one of my favorites of the year, along with The Batman and Everything Everywhere All at Once. It was harrowing and disturbing while also leaving me feeling energized. I'm sold on anything Robert Eggers does now.
I really enjoyed the movie! I agree that it really is an experience because it is really historically accurate along with the mythology and rituals. They dove deep and I loved it! It's a movie that truly feels like an epic! The long shots were also fantastically done
Just watched it on Prime. Really enjoyed this movie. So weird and so complicated and yet it held my attention for every minute. How? This was excellence at display. How did the director pull it off?
When I was younger The Crow was my favorite revenge film, I haven't leaned into that genre as it can get bleak, but revenge is a fairly common trope. It's easy to understand and cathartic when done right. Considering that in our real lives we don't do that unless we're emotionally compromised, we have to let things go or we wouldn't have time to live our own boring epic.
Most of it is him being faced with an increasingly greater cost, clearly articulated types of costs, and having to decide to to continue his revenge quest. It's about the whole warrior ethos thing that a promise must be honored at any cost, even if the promise is found to have been made on a misunderstanding. It painstakingly goes over every kind of inhibition or cost he may have had to pay. I love the scene with his dead mother and brother who he had been disinclined to kill and his uncle looks in on him over the dead bodies.

Personally, the trailer and casting choices got me very excited for this. I normally don't watch Viking stuff but this really seems very intriguing. It looks like a brutal slowburn with some great acting. Looking forward to checking this out.
Your review of this movie is as good as the movie itself. I felt the same way...I wanted to like this movie so much and it didn't disappoint at all. No moment was waisted I was completely enthralled from start to finish. I also felt like there wasn't one thing I would change. It's not a perfect movie but it's a perfect adaptation of Eggers vision and I loved every second. I felt after leaving the theater if I were to make a movie that's the type of film I would dream of making. And he did it. All the flowers and kudos to Eggers and the Cast...Just Wow! When I heard the plot of the movie on double toasted I was like, “this is The Lion King” but they never mentioned Hamlet or the lion King. I love that Jeremy is so real and telling it like it is. I don’t feel like comparing movies is that offensive to directors or writers especially if it’s a quoted inspiration to the film.
Why would they mention a play based off their own story, or a children's movie based off that play? Amloðasaga is the old Norse story which Shakespeare based his play off the Old Danish version of, written by Saxo Grammaticus. This is the original story, its those stories which are taking from *this*.
Took you're word for it and have to say it was one of the best movies I've ever seen . No exaggerating, I can not recommend this movie enough. The landscape's where unbelievably beautiful ( and I never use that word ) . This is the first time since T2 that I seen a movie twice in the theater. Another thing that shocked me was how many top notch actor's where in it . Seriously with so many good people in it why hasn't this movie been promoted more.

This is why I’d love a Robert Eggers adaptation of The Odessey/The Iliad. He could totally make Odysseus the hero in a way that doesn’t feel watered down or tries to make him relatable to modern standards.
He would do a great job but he seems to like to tell his own stories which is cool.
That would actually be really cool. I wonder what he’d do with a warm Mediterranean color palette, since everything else has been so dark.

It's awesome to hear the action getting so much praise! I was on this stunt team for 4 months. I was a Knattleikr game player and Berserker in the Slav village raid, and did a few bits of stunt rigging. I've seen the movie 3 times now and it gets better each time. Rob is rad to work with, keep an eye on that name!

The fact that Eggers also has all his sets hand built with similar tools from that time is mindblowing and makes watching the movie even more special absolutely stunning and engaging movie. 10/10
Not to mention the garb and armor was hand made using the techniques of the period. The attention to detail is mind-blowing. If people are offended by the dialog and subject matter as presented in this film, maybe they needed to be offended by it.

From the first scene full of terrible CGI sailing ships, to the alienating story line, to the obvious placement of the necklace to be used as the focal reference in a time jump, to the giant Viking 'slave' which nobody sees as suspicious, it's embarrassingly bad
I loved "The Witch", I loved "The Lighthouse" and I am so pumped to see "The Northman". Robert Eggers is fast becoming my favourite director.
Hope he can do his medieval epic "The Knight" next.

Another thing that was absolutely marvelous about this movie was the music. The Norse drums, horns, and chanting were perfect in building the atmosphere for every large event in the film. Definitely one of my new favorite movie soundtracks

I think Eggers really excells with his music/soundtrack. The Witch and Lighthouse had the same overbearing and pounding soundtrack that I felt added to the atmosphere.

The thing that really surprised me is how much creative freedom Eggers seemed to have in this big budget studio movie.
He actually had to do reshoots due to the studio not liking how the film did in test screenings, and you can really tell which of those scenes are it lol

I ABSOLUTELY loved it.
The only thing I'd change... Is some of the fight choreography was clunky/mistimed.
But it was so immersive and true to what it was I didn't care.

While the production quality and story-telling are first rate (as we have come to expect from Eggers), it is the performances that were incredible. Skarsgard was a beast, Anya Taylor Joy was at the heart of this film, Willem Dafoe and Björk were perfectly deployed and omg Nicole Kidman! GREAT stuff.

What I love from Robert Eggers is that he has a distinct style, storytelling method. It reminds me of Tarantino not style wise but the fact that when you see a Tarantino film you know he directed it, it’s the same with Eggers

Everything Everywhere and Massive Talent were awesome! I’m not a superhero fan but I’d actually say the new Batman is miles better than the massively overrated The Dark Knight. The Northman was one of the most grand scale films I’ve seen and simultaneously one of the most boring.
I will always appreciate a Viking Movie that manages to get you invested while not pulling any punches about their horrific nature. It shows you without trying to moralize or apologize for it, it simply is a part of how they are and yet you still wind up completely invested into the characters themselves.
I like how it's different then his other movies but that's the point. He researchs history and builds a story around that. This was told how a Viking epic would be told. It's a revenge story but hidden inside are stories of humanity and how things are not always how they seem. All of it is guided by Norse mythology and beliefs

The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite books of all time and has got to be my favorite revenge tale! Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie is another great one

I never had the chance to see The Lighthouse in the theatre, but I did for The Northman. It's such an easy world to get immersed in because it feels like they just brought cameras back to 900AD and filmed vikings. And if you're immersed, the music and the sound design really adds to the atmosphere of this world. There are so many moments where I got chills in this movie, and some of that was due to feeling the sound resonating up through my feet at certain moments. The plot is basically Hamlet and isn't anything new in that sense, but it tackles complex themes of revenge and childhood naivety, while being an audio-visual spectacle with incredible production design. Nothing feels rushed but nothing over stays its welcome either. As Jeremy mentioned in the review, the story is about Amleth avenging his father's death: that death happens like less than 10 minutes into the film. They do so well at establishing what this world is, the kind of father Amleth's father is, and they don't drag it on unnecessarily. I would also say that, having seen the film, there are moments at the start that gain a whole new perspective once the story has been told. I've not really been watching movies that have come out this year; I hope there are other films as good or better, but I strongly doubt it. If The Northman isn't at least nominated for a bunch of awards this Oscars, especially after Don't Look Up was nominated for anything last year, I'll have lost all faith. The only thing I'd change about The Northman is there are two moments where text appears to establish time: they feel unnecessary. You could argue that it's useful to know the precise year, for the sake of establishing the film's atmosphere and setting, but the second one saying "Years later" is so unnecessary as the editing already tell us that that would be the case. So, yeah, 137 minutes of film, and only about 5 seconds of it bothered me
I hope Eggers keeps giving Dafoe ALL the roles. This actor-director duo is easily on the Dicaprio-Scorcesse level of awesomeness.

Favorite revenge tale: Count of Monte Christo. The book is stellar. The movie..... I've seen it no less than 2 dozen times. I love the movie. Stellar cast. Beautifully shot. And just an all around brilliant adaptation of a brilliant story.

I was so happy to see the mysticism in the movie, and I think it was blended within the "real" elements perfectly. If you love Icelandic sagas, you'll most likely enjoy this film. The pacing is unusual and the budget seems to have largely been spent on the first 30 minutes, but I felt that in a way that enhanced the sense of unpredictability. I didn't know where the story was ultimately going until it got there, and that's a hard thing to pull off. Anya Taylor-Joy--my goodness, she's just wonderful.

They were no more irredeemable than plenty other groups before and after them. They were even more redeemable than some anyway. Not to mention Vikings weren't even all one central group, they came from different nations and some were known to be worse than others. My own Viking ancestry comes from Vikings that literally came and assimilated with the Irish and didnt slaughter and pillage everyone lol
This movie is fucking amazing! Me and my girlfriend went to see it on Saturday and we both loved it! Alexander Skarsagard absolutely kills it as Amleth, the fight scenes when they happen are brutal and intense as shit. If you love Viking mythology you’ll love it. The movie is 2 hours 20 I believe and me and my girlfriend weren’t bored at all. Just need to say this has probably the best preparation for a battle sequence I’ve ever seen in a film and I felt like I was with them, definitely my favourite film of the year so far 🤘

Just came out of it, and DAMN ! What a cinematic experience ! The images and music of this movie will haunt me for a while !
Oddly enough, it reminded me a great deal of A24 John Lowery's The Green Knight, that came out a year ago (and was also a formidable cinematic experience to me). Similar oniric and mystical vibes, with some slow panning shots that reveal that all you see is not necessarily real.
Everybody in it contributed to make it a masterpiece (and it was quite fun to have just finished Moon Knight, and see Ethan Hawke here in a much darker -and shorter- role). Skarsgaard is super impressive and guttural (at some point, I was even worrying about his vocal chords, the guy can scream !), and he reminded me of a Conan the Barbarian of today. Nicole Kidman was deliciously evil, her scene truly sent chills in my veins.
And Anya Tailor Joy was just hauntingly beautiful.
The DP Jarin Blaschke was a true magician, with countless shots that could fall under the "every frame a painting" saying.
And gosh the music ! It was a true standout, almost like another character of the movie. Each beat of the battle drums were really pumping blood in my veins !
It's truly rare to feel such a raw movie , yet oddly poetic and sensitive in all its violence !
Massive respect to Robert Eggers to have been the maestro of all these fantastic elements and have been able to strike such a raw yet delicate balance.
I thought that too. I love The Green Knight and this just as much/ if not more/ equally/ can't decide! The cinematic gorgeousness and mythical elements are an absolute joy. It's not often I want to go and see a movie again right away, but those two movies make me feel that way.
Of course we're all still clicking on your face. You're the every day person reviewer basically. I don't care about technical issues of a movie. I just want to hear someone's opinion so I can determine if I want to spend my time watching a movie. Plus you're just super charismatic and fun to watch :)

I do get the impression this was marketed as more of an action film than it is which is maybe why some people were a bit perplexed by it. I have to mention the score and sound, because it's amazing. This is definitely a 'cinematic film', something that is undoubtedly better experienced in the cinema where you can feel the bass rumbling around you.
You got through the whole review without mentioning Shakespeare or Hamlet, Shakespeare's Hamlet is based on the same saga that The Northman is based on - The legend of Amleth.
He mentioned it at the beginning in his quick Lion King blip.

Smoked a blunt before I saw this opening night. Fucking great experience with the sound design.
Eggers is now officially one of those guys who I will automatically buy a ticket for every time.
The film is beautiful and stark, and the performances and pacing were on point imo. One thing that was hard to wrap my head around was what KIND of story it is-- At times it felt like a grounded, realistic story of norse life in 900AD, but at other times it leaned heavily into classic fantasy tropes like magic swords and prophecies. It would be in classic Eggers "slow burn" mode for a while, and then suddenly a series of brief adventurey vignettes would vault us into the next "slow burn" chapter. It was a bit odd in that sense.
Really that's the only thing I can fault about it. It did not have nearly as much humor as The Lighthouse, but I don't think its bleakness made it a slog either- though I can see that being difficult for some folks to grapple with.

Completely agree. Eggers is shooting up to the top of my favourite directors list. He seems devoted to capturing the past with minimal filmic concessions. He manages to create an experience which is comprehendible to a modern day audience but still shows a really detailed, gritty, harrowing, shamanic, unflinching glimpse of what the past might have really felt like for its inhabitants. The line between reality and the supernatural is frequently too blurred to see clearly. Mythology is not a comforting fairy tale but fundamental to a meaningful existence. I love what he does and I loved the Northman.

@@curly_wyn I guess I'd disagree with the premise that certain directors are more or less deserving of admiration. The fact that I like Eggers work, does not mean I don't like the work of anyone else. Also, I don't believe that the big established names are automatically worthy of undying praise -- and a top spot in everyone's favourites list -- just because they are well known. Because Eggers is a relative newcomer does not make him less deserving of praise.
Crucially though, in my opinion, I think Eggers has yet to miss. I have been blown away by all three of his major releases. I loved The Witch. It was creepy, foreboding and haunting. I thought it was really impressively handled as a first major release with quite a delicate and supernatural plot. Same with The Lighthouse. Two actors in black and white in one small building was gripping, beguiling, maddening from start to finish. Eggers really knows how to the visual and audial tools at his disposal to tell an engaging and rich story. However, principally, I think he does a stellar job of getting incredible performances out of practically every actor he works with (no matter if he's working with big names (The Northman) or children (The Witch)).
Now this isn't even to touch of the inherent subjectivity of art nor the expansiveness of my list of favourite directors. But this reply would get hideously long if I delved into those topics. However, critically, if someone comes along and (in one's opinion) knocks three quite stylistically different films out of the park, that person is doing something right and deserves to be held in high regard.
Them Skarsgards really know how to play a Viking. Gustaf Skarsgard was amazing as Floki, too.

Hey....Don't watch this movie thinking about the trailer. The trailer made this movie look like Braveheart, and it's not. That's not to say there aren't epic battles. There are. IT's just more of a conflict of revenge, love and hatred. It's also extremely weird. I mean that. If that sounds like your kind of thing, go for it. You won't be disappointed. But if not, you will walk going, "what the fuck did I just watch?" in a bad kind, nay awful, kind of way.

As revenge tales go, the one that pops up immediately for me is the original Korean version of Old Boy. Still one the more out there plot lines that hits you nicely square in the jaw the first time around when the whole set-piece wraps it up on you.
The Punisher(2004), Payback, Man on Fire, Rogue Assassin, Lucky Number Slevin, Four Brothers, John Wick, Desperado, Mask of Zorro, Gladiator, Parker, Faster, Italian Job, Romeo Must Die, Kill Bill and The Crow are a lot better than Oldboy. Oldboy is too odd, boring and perverse to me.
sympathy for mr vengeance is better for revenge than Old boy.

Watching the Witch and The Lighthouse.. i absolutely loved those movies and the uniqueness of them, i was very skeptical about the Northman. It looks action packed from the trailer and it just didnt seem like a Robert Eggers movie. But holy shit i was wrong. It was totally epic and that dark strange vibe which i love from his movies was all in this . 10/10 movie for me
Will most likely be catching it in theatres next weekend. I saw The Lighthouse in theatres and I'll never forget the awkward laughs and reactions from the audience I was with. Eggers is always a treat, and hearing the actors talk so positively of how he directs makes me confident in his future career just like Villeneuve. The production and cinematography looks amazing.
Yeah I just saw it last night. I’ve been fortunate enough to have seen all 3 of his films in the theater. It just makes the experience so much better.
So glad to hear Eggars knocked it out the park again. I was really nervous about this, it’s seems so many of the indie directors lately make 1 or 2 glorious blow budget films then given something bigger either lose their identity in the studio grind or go full pretentious slop

One of the cinematography aspects that was really captivating but hasn’t been talked about much was in certain sequences when the director had certain scenes single shot, like the village raid. Had that 1917-esque feel which really immerses you in the world of the story

I just got out of the movie myself and I can concur with Jeremy’s conclusion this is one of the better movie experiences I’ve had in a long time and it was really refreshing especially as somebody who’s in post production for a feature medieval epic this is reinvigorated my love for filmmaking and has motivated me to push on in a time where I have been questioning myself and my abilities as a filmmaker

this is a statement towards shitty state of cinema in general, not that this movie was any good because ive seen it and it was awful. Jsut fucking grotesquly bad. I didnt know whether to laugh or cry it was so fucking bad. Nothing in this movie is authentic, least of all the people and the story.

You hit this review head on. I completely agree with everything you said. It's unfortunate google reviewers absolutely threw their reviews to the dogs.
My only criticism is that after all the artistic film techniques in the first third of the movie, the unique aesthetic of the film dramatically transferred to a more modern, generic style of filming which made me slightly disappointed. Yet overall the film was epic and legendary.
Seen it twice now and seriously considering a third! Its a masterpiece imo! The atmosphere, the "sets", the acting, action, costumes and sound/score, everything is fantastic!
It has one of the most terrifying scenes I have seen! I don't mean terrifying as a scary movie would do it but how effectively it puts you into that situation and makes you feel terrified like the characters would. I won't spoil what it is but it involves howling and blood!
Can't recommend it enough! See it in the theater!

Saw it. It is indeed very well done. Technically everything on point. Directing, acting, set pieces. The atmosphere and music are all top notch. But i don't know if I'll watch it again so soon. This is what i experienced with Nolan's Dunkirk
When the second trailer for this movie came out there was a quote saying "Holy Shit" and I think that's the best way to say how good this movie is.
It did a fantastic job of incorporating elements of legend, myth and Norse/Germanic culture in a way that audiences got the gist without resorting to hour long expositions to teach them. Also there is a particular fight that Norse buffs like myself very much appreciate for its accuracy. If you know, you know.

Great storytelling. What reason did the villages warriors have for pulling a coup on Ethan Hawkes character ? I completely understand Fjolnir and Nicole Kidmans reason for killing him, thats not my issue. But why did the rest of the villages warriors have for helping ambush the king ? Kind of a gaping plothole if u ask me.
@@nizzanator well one it wasn't the whole village it was fjolnir men and the people that supported him. Those were likely warriors who knew their king was wounded since they came back from raiding. This would likely support Fjolnir and his people reasoning to support this. Those who are strong in the viking world lead.
Two if you watched plenty of viking shows such as Vikings or other western viking movies betrayal is kinda a big deal. Kings and small groups of villagers always try to overthrow their chieftains. This trope is well known in TV and film despite it not being 100% accurate in real life.

A couple honorable mentions of revenge tales for me are, Payback (Mel Gibson), Fist Of The North Star, Afro Samurai, Magnificent Seven, but the absolute best and one of the best movies period, Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood). Some may argue the movie as a whole isn't technically a revenge tale in the classic sense, but I am mostly referring to the last 3rd or 4th of the film after they beat Ned to death, you watch Eastwood's character slide back into the person we have heard about throughout the film with every word from the prostitute and every slug he takes from the whiskey bottle. And OMG does that film have some of the best phrases or one liners "Hell of a thing killing a man, you take away everything he has or will be" but the absolute best is (Hackman)"You just killed an unarmed man" (Eastwood)"He should arm himself if he's going to decorate his bar with my friend" Shit now I got go watch it again

This review is EXACTLY why I tell people NOT to allow a critic's review to make up your mind about going to see movie's. A buddy of mine who loves these types of TV shows/movies went to see this with his 3 daughter's who also loved the show Vikings etc....Didn't like this movie at all, not one of them. I wasn't going to see it anyway but his review makes it seem worth seeing if your into this genre of movies!🤷🏽♂️🤴🏽

Blue Ruin is one of my favorite revenge tales, mainly because the revenge is had in like the first 15 minutes. I love it because its really a "consequences of revenge" tale.
When I get asked what is my favorite revenge tale, I usually remember Park Chan-Wook's revenge trilogy (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr vengeance, Lady vengeance). They are all pretty good movies, but they all end up being a kick on the throat. We as the audience expect to see a cathartic carnage, but Park shows that things aren't always so simple...
Totally agree on "no down time", everything was moving the plot forward, no fluff no montage or filler just things happening that drive the plot to the ending. Loved it, and yes it was beautiful to watch and listen to... enthralling soundtrack too.

Thank you Jeremy! Heard a few critics before i saw the film myself, been hyped for a while after the past years of viking porn. Eggers is a master artist and a realistic, Symbolically, Mythologically and as you say visceral awakening Primal telling was much needed. Heard a few groups laugh after the film and knew that this age and modernity systems of entertainment / thought placements, that many People wont "get" the movies brilliance. Like the Arena, theyve seen crushed skulls in GoT so they are appauled when Eggers chooses acting and sound over gorey make up and CGI but ey....

I love robert eggers with a passion. The witch was my favorite then the lighthouse cane out and that was my favorite then this movie comes in and solidified Eggers as an amazing director.

I agree with you Jeremy. I wasn't too sure after watching 'The Witch', but his style and film making is growing on me. I watched The Northman Yesterday with my daughter and we were sceptical at the beginning, but totally enthralled with the whole movie. A brilliant addition to the art of Cinema and this film could not be made by any other film maker. A+ Excellent. IMO. 👍😊
Definitely one of my favorites of the year, along with The Batman and Everything Everywhere All at Once. It was harrowing and disturbing while also leaving me feeling energized. I'm sold on anything Robert Eggers does now.

Just watched it on Prime. Really enjoyed this movie. So weird and so complicated and yet it held my attention for every minute. How? This was excellence at display. How did the director pull it off?
When I was younger The Crow was my favorite revenge film, I haven't leaned into that genre as it can get bleak, but revenge is a fairly common trope. It's easy to understand and cathartic when done right. Considering that in our real lives we don't do that unless we're emotionally compromised, we have to let things go or we wouldn't have time to live our own boring epic.
So what’s your current favorite revenge film?
I absolutely loved this movie. It was so immersive mainly because it just dropped you completely into the world without over explanating too much.
Most of it is him being faced with an increasingly greater cost, clearly articulated types of costs, and having to decide to to continue his revenge quest. It's about the whole warrior ethos thing that a promise must be honored at any cost, even if the promise is found to have been made on a misunderstanding. It painstakingly goes over every kind of inhibition or cost he may have had to pay. I love the scene with his dead mother and brother who he had been disinclined to kill and his uncle looks in on him over the dead bodies.

Personally, the trailer and casting choices got me very excited for this. I normally don't watch Viking stuff but this really seems very intriguing. It looks like a brutal slowburn with some great acting. Looking forward to checking this out.

Your review of this movie is as good as the movie itself. I felt the same way...I wanted to like this movie so much and it didn't disappoint at all. No moment was waisted I was completely enthralled from start to finish. I also felt like there wasn't one thing I would change. It's not a perfect movie but it's a perfect adaptation of Eggers vision and I loved every second. I felt after leaving the theater if I were to make a movie that's the type of film I would dream of making. And he did it. All the flowers and kudos to Eggers and the Cast...Just Wow!

I loved this movie! I saw it last Friday and I'm so glad to see Jeremy do a review. The score is amazing!
When I heard the plot of the movie on double toasted I was like, “this is The Lion King” but they never mentioned Hamlet or the lion King. I love that Jeremy is so real and telling it like it is. I don’t feel like comparing movies is that offensive to directors or writers especially if it’s a quoted inspiration to the film.
Why would they mention a play based off their own story, or a children's movie based off that play? Amloðasaga is the old Norse story which Shakespeare based his play off the Old Danish version of, written by Saxo Grammaticus. This is the original story, its those stories which are taking from *this*.

Took you're word for it and have to say it was one of the best movies I've ever seen . No exaggerating, I can not recommend this movie enough. The landscape's where unbelievably beautiful ( and I never use that word ) . This is the first time since T2 that I seen a movie twice in the theater. Another thing that shocked me was how many top notch actor's where in it . Seriously with so many good people in it why hasn't this movie been promoted more.
