The rack was a pretty straightforward project. I like that you included the footage of your daughter showing off the essential skills that you've coached her through. Nicely done.
I love projects like this. Modding something you bought is often even more satisfying than fabricating something from scratch. And you always do them so well with your mix of woodworking and metalworking skills. Some of that nice, shiny diamond plate you used on the trailer would look good on the front of the roof rack. The shiny surface would reflect the sun enough to keep the truck cab a lot cooler. And I fully expect to see either some custom containers or custom mounts for store-bought containers for your camping gear, that will fit on that rack like Lego bricks and give you an easy way to load and unload in chunks. Plus the containers can function as extra camp seating. Even just a few bolt holes drilled through the rack here and there would allow for each secure packing of gear like bikes, without as much need for ropes and straps.
Oh yes! I’ve thought about how I can use it for making things stow and be secured better. I’ve thought about some side boxes that I could use for camping but also for the occasional side job I do. Lots of possibilities. May have to keep my eyes open for some cheap diamond plate boxes that I can fit into this setup.

But I guess you also know. He used the face frame open back hood and pulled his cap bill over his ear. Said that splatter in his ear was mighty painful!
I've been thinking about building something similar for my Taco, but I'm thinking about mounting the two rear cross-members to hinges (opposing sides) so that I could easily get them out of the way for taller loads. Just a suggestion for a future mod.

I used to love canoeing, but I didn't realize how much difference a good canoe makes. Picked up a Bell Morningstar off CL and it's like driving a BMW compared to the plastic things available at stores. As a blacksmith, kudos for doing a great job on your rack. Adding some kind of sheet to the fore-end will make a big difference if you get the right kind - something like perforated sheet rather than expanded metal. You can make a reasonable deck there by using 1"x1/8" flat bars welded 1" apart, or less. That will give you good coverage while also allowing rain and debris to fall through. Just don't forge to put cross-members underneath so the bars are tied to one another for rigidity. While you're their, it'd be a good idea to go around the whole thing and weld on a ton of loops for tie-downs. You can never have too many points to fasten a load and they're easy enough to make with some 1/4" round bar and a bench vise.

It had pockets but the rack wouldn’t have fit well so I just used the existing angle and then drilled some bolt holes. And yes, she’s growing quickly and We are trying the best we can to prepare her for this crazy world we live in.
Loved the video. I used to live in Tucson, and while we don't miss the heat, I do miss the monsoons. I also love seeing your camping trips in the white mountains. We used to go to Big Lake every summer, and my dad lives up there now so I get up there once a year. Cheers.

Oh boy…. Olive can swim but she isn’t the best swimming pup out there…. Almost a panicked look when she swims. So the paddling wouldn’t have gone well I don’t think😂

Haha….I know….BUT I did think about it! But I kinda figured the black would do better with greasy steel and other kinda of things. Wouldn’t show up as easily.
I happen to get a good amount of square metal tubing offered to me for free once a year. It tends to rust before use to what I see in this video as a bare minimum. So... *How are you / What are you using to, remove the rust before priming and painting?* Please let me know, or if someone else knows what he uses and or does, can you please let me know?
With rusty steel I usually do a wire wheel to get rid of the rust and then a good metal primer. Sometimes I’ll use ‘rusty metal’ primer that rustoleum sells. Then I finish off with paint. But this one I did not prime since it was painted before hand… so I just washed it real good with water and a small bit of soap. Let dry and then finished it with paint

My pappy use to say “son if your truck ain’t gotta 8’ bed, it ain’t a truck”. Guess that’s why I get 6-1/2’ beds. 🤣

Consider slightly lower side rails and slightly higher cross bars. This would allow loading the rack from the side of the truck with a forklift.
Do you think that rack would hold something heavy enough that a fork lift would have to lift it?

It’s welded but that’s a good idea now that you mention it. Maybe I’ll be making some mods to this sooner than I thought🤔😊👍

I use .030 all the time. Not for any reason in particular except for that’s what I started with and just never bothered to try the other sizes 😂

If not done so already I would weld some caps on the rails in front to keep rain from going in and rusting the metal. Just my 2C
I opted for the lazy solution….I just added some plastic caps to the ends

Haha….I know….BUT I did think about it! But I kinda figured the black would do better with greasy steel and other kinda of things. Wouldn’t show up as easily.
I happen to get a good amount of square metal tubing offered to me for free once a year. It tends to rust before use to what I see in this video as a bare minimum. So...
*How are you / What are you using to, remove the rust before priming and painting?*

With rusty steel I usually do a wire wheel to get rid of the rust and then a good metal primer. Sometimes I’ll use ‘rusty metal’ primer that rustoleum sells. Then I finish off with paint.
But this one I did not prime since it was painted before hand… so I just washed it real good with water and a small bit of soap. Let dry and then finished it with paint
