  • Today I’m setting up a simple Rainwater Harvesting System on the Shipping Container Playhouse project I built a few years ago. In the video I’ll go over installing the gutters, down spout pipe, leaf guard, first flush system, water tank, inlet and overflow pipe…. As well as important things to consider before installing a rainwater harvesting system.
    I hope you and enjoy and please let me know if you have any questions! - Joe
    I also want to thank Tank Depot for sponsoring this video. Here is a link to their rainwater harvesting and water tank offerings.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@CastewaPL it’s a small structure for sure….but I’ve already got collection on all of my other structures so this was a good opportunity to do a set up video. As for the filling up. Yes it will.
      The roof space is approx 90sqft, which means that for every inch of rain I will collect approx 54 gallons. And our monsoon season can often get anywhere from a 5-6 inches to as much as nearly 20” like some places around here did last monsoon. So at a 300 gallon tank size, it would take approx 6” to fill it.

    Love your voice, tone, pace and demeanor. I could listen to you speak all day. Clear, professional and on target. You don't ramble. Appreciate that. Thanks for sharing, I learned a lot. I am wondering why you wouldn't push some flexible tubing over the first flush outlet and plumb it into the overflow pipe so you don't create erosion under the platform and further use all that water.

    Perfect timing. I've finally decided to get of my butt and get busy on a rainwater harvesting system. I know you're a fireman, do you have a high pressure pump that you can hook up to your system to protect your property in case of a brush fire? I had asked on a local FB group if anyone in my area had experience with such pumps and everyone basically said "Don't be stupid, call 911 and run away.", which I though was the most asinine advice I'd ever heard. If lightning hits the brush near my house and starts a brush fire, I'm not about to flee and hope it doesn't reach my house before the fire department gets here if I have a chance of stopping it before it gets out of control. Better to put out a burning bush or two than wait 5, 10, 15 minutes for the fire dept. when that one burning bush has become a quarter acre wildfire.

    A nice trick for starting the hole in the tank with the hole saw is to run it reverse to get the cut started. Bad things can happen running a large hole saw forward when starting the hole, and hard to get it started exactly where you want it. I've installed hundreds of tanks and it really helps.
    Nice work. Maybe a little overkill on the pipe diameter ;)

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha….yes, very much overkill on the pipe size. But this was the only structure I had to do it on as my house, shop, and pretty much every other structure already has tanks and collection setup. So this was more of a demonstration opportunity to show the kit and also add a system to the container playhouse….even if it is capable of a lot larger volumes from a larger structure😉

    Thank you! Thank you! I appreciate the demonstration. Hubs & I bought a 1550 gallon water tank to be installed for home use, after our small home is built (on raw land, trying to clear). I was checking out Australia YT videos on how to install a water tank. Some YT-ers (US) spend 35+ minutes demonstrating how to install but don't really show all the components or really demonstrate the procedure of water harvesting. Ugh!!! So frustrating! So, thank you again. We live where we get rain throughout the year (summers can be drier though & 2 months of possible snow in winter) & plan on getting another 1500 gallon water tank to collect enough water, plus any other buildings to collect water from for future animals we hopefully will be getting so they can have water... (chicken coops, goat pens, etc.) Great video!!!!!! 👍👍👍

This would also help with any insects that thrive around water keeping them further from the collection tank and building.

    Just a little tip, with your friction fit parts Joe, pop a screw in them so they stay solid you can simply unscrew to remove. It worked wonders for us to pass inspection with our temporary tank before our big tank arrived, the temporary tank obviously needed longer downpipes to the catch basket so they were frustrating hubby falling out just friction fit, so I suggested popping a screw in 🤷🏼‍♀️voilà problem solved, hubby obviously took the idea and passed it on as his own. Just depends on the part of AZ. Where you at? We’ve had a couple good rains this far this monsoon….. and last year was one of the best on record. Of course I’m in the S/SE part of AZ.

      Thank you Robert! As for PHX….I do as well. My sis lives up there and I’d like her to have more rainy relief days from the heat. Perhaps we might enter into a new southwest being wetter and cooler trend soon. Who knows🤷‍♂️😂
