    1. Make your on ramps and off ramps connect smoothly to your highways. Nothing looks worse than awkward ramps that connect with sharp elbows instead of smooth curves. Don't run your ramps parallel to your highway before connecting them if you can avoid it. When you do that you have to connect with an elbow that curves the wrong way. Instead, connect the ramp at as acute (gradual) an angle as the game will allow and add an extra lane to the highway for merging. This is the way real ramps connect to real highways. Learn how to make smooth curves that connect to other curves using the same tangents. It takes practice, don't give up!
    2. Pay attention to the heights of your roads. Make slopes very gentle and gradual and leave just enough space to clear the road below. If your roads don't look right, the rest of your city won't look right either. Don't build long, unrealistic stretches of elevated roads. Instead, consider making stretches of sunken highway with landscaped slopes on the sides. In real life sunken highways minimize noise and are frequently used in downtown areas.
    3. Don't over-do the trees. Grass, bushes and flowers are beautiful too. It's not realistic to hide the entire ground with trees. In real life trees are expensive to plant so you never see dense thickets of them in landscaped areas. Add rocks for variety too.
    4. Use a variety of trees: palms, cypresses, conifers, deciduous. Use a variety of sizes too. Use blossoming trees as well.
    5. Don't over-do quays. Don't over-do concrete and asphalt in general. Landscaped slopes and beaches are much nicer than quays. Use quays only in industrial waterfronts and as retaining walls in industrial areas. Consider using more decorative retaining walls instead. Consider using decorative pavements on your pedestrian and bike paths to minimize the amount of concrete and asphalt in your city.
    6. Put in more parking lots than you think you need. Real cities have lots of parking lots, and it fills in the spaces between your skyscrapers realistically. Decorate the borders and islands in your parking lots with trees, flowers, bushes and grass. The game considers parking lots to be parks so they increase land values just like parks.
    7. Reserve as much space as you can along your waterfront for parks and open space. Don't build a road (or even worse, a railroad) right along a waterfront. That blocks off pedestrian access to the water and prevents the waterfront from being used to best advantage. It's a psychological barrier as well. Nobody likes crossing a busy highway or railroad even if paths are provided. Minimize industrial areas near the water. Keep most of your industrial area near your major highways and railroads instead. Waterfront industrial areas should just have the docks and fishing industry that have to go there. The rest of your waterfront should be reserved for more high value and decorative uses like parks, public beaches, mansions, condos, hotels, golf courses, amusement parks, aquariums, marinas for yachts and sailboats and the like. Now that the game provides an alternative, don't pollute the water. Real cities in first world countries don't do that.

I live near the Mississippi River. A lot of cities have single track or double track railroads that run down the river front as well as a floodwall (Quay) The difference is how they landscape along the river front. A great example of this is Davenport, Iowa near John O'Donnell stadium. They have a green space along the river with a active freightline running through it. They put parking lots and footpaths along side the tracks and tastefully applied trees to buffer train and road noise from nearby State Street.

I know that's sounds totalitarian, but for the sake of many, we sometimes must sacrifice few of them. Sometimes i even delete some residential blocks to put on a mall or an office zone and enlarge the road.
But to mitigate that, plan out the layout first.

look to other creators and the real world for inspiration,

Spaces between highrises is something that really depends on the style of city you're trying to go for. For example, a classic American "concrete jungle" is going to be super-compact with lots of tall buildings packed in a relatively close space. Meanwhile, a supermodern middle-eastern designer city would actually be near impossible with conventional zoning and would require Plopable RICO and Plop the Growables.

Just by watching builds i learnt alot on road layouts and decorating. You just need to observe.
      What i learnt:
      1) Big roads, main roads, minimize cross junctions / intersections. Brach out and have all your junctions and smaller squares there. If you make grid city, make sure you have one main road that can go through one end to the other with as few intersections as possible.
      2) Highways, elecvated bypass. Industry area to direct outside connection is a must.
      3) Don't be afraid to do major rework when you try to place down highways, transport hub/stations. DELETE and clear a path. It is okay.
      4) Google map/Earth.
Also in this video, follow the terrain on the edge. You can toggle it on the panel, no need mod.

Roads: think artery > vein > capillary. For a cool downtown area, build mixed-use and -architectural buildings by using plop the growables and literally placing buildings inside each other. Having a thin skyscraper emerging from the top of a broad mid-level commercial building with nicely contrasting architecture is AMAZING to look at, really makes for an interesting looking building. Decorate as you build a small section so it doesn’t seem so daunting. It also gives you a way to work out how you want to decorate an entire zone with less consequence if you decide to change it up.

LD commercial is a good way to step down to houses from high rises.
for road layouts, think about how/when your city was made, was it a perfect grid or naturally formed.
Have plenty of open spaces for parks and other things, don’t make every little thing zoned.

I'm only new to the game and in the process of creating my first city, but I like to use lots of curves and T junctions. I think I have 1, maybe 2 cross roads and only two roundabouts. I use four lane avenues with trees as the main arterial roads, small 4 lane roads as secondary roads and the dual lane two way roads for suburbs (with trees and footpaths of course!).
The curves create natural gaps between the buildings which I fill with parks if they're big enough, if not, just trees. Apart from one fly over, everything else goes underground to keep it looking neat. You can see how the city has changed as I've learnt to use more of the functions and mods for the game. Still a long learning curve though! See what I did there lol
Not using the infinite money cheat and I have traffic despawning turned off too. Traffics sits around 80% and dips to about 70% as more people move in after I create a new suburb before returning to ~80%.

May i ask you a question?
I have a problem with the train, monorail and overground metro ( or metro) road layout. How to make the rails look realistic or at least look better?
Btw thanks for the tips and tricks, even though i had to play this game with very low graphic 😥

    • @dlwatib
      @dlwatib 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

You don't specify what the problem is that you're having with your train layout. But in general trains can't turn as sharply or climb or descend slopes nearly as steep as a car or truck. Keep everything very gentle with your train tracks. Make them follow the land contours so that they can stay as level as possible. Avoid unrealistically long tunnels or elevated sections. They're very expensive in real life so they keep them as short as possible. When bridging a river, don't let the game put a pylon in the middle of the river. Real engineers never design a bridge that way because the middle of the river is deepest and has the swiftest flowing water. Two pylons, one near each shore, are much more realistic.

My advice to decorate your city:
If you have this rare luck of free space in your city, it's nice to invest it in increasing land value and putting some services buildings there. I'd really encourage to build a couple of parks in sepratation from eachother, and then connect them with tracks, so pedestrians will be able to use them. Then, you don't have to leave it like this - I know, that it won't contribute anyhow to anything, but add some trees, build your own playground with parts given; make it your own, large park. As I said, it won't increase land value, but it's really nice to see this every time you randomly go through the city and see the art you've done yourself.
Another tip: when you build querries, its icon is a sandy beach with track and palmas around it. It's increadably satisfying to build something like this.
