    Your "Roundabout" solution is basically just your intersection solution, but with the lane crossing points spaced out more. If you didn't have the traffic lights in your intersection version, the roundabout solution would definitely make it safer in real life, because you don't have to look both ways when crossing. You look one way when crossing the first, drive 20m and then look the other way at the second crossing.
    To prevent congestion on the "Roundabout" itself, I'd say give right of way for cars that exit the roundabout and make the ones entering the roundabout yield. That also nicely follows the rules of yielding to cars from your right.

    The classic "bypassed-turbo-magic roundabout"! It's not entirely unlike the magic roundabout of Swindon, except it is 4-way and bypassed, so ingress and outgress is reduced from a roundabout at each corner to a single yielded crossing with dedicated purpose lanes in the roundabout structure itself

    • @poruatokin
      @poruatokin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Swindon was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this.

    • @jayayerson8819
      @jayayerson8819 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Swindon has more points of conflict, takes up far more space, and being substantially less vertical, probably cost a lot less to build. It also solves for a more difficult set, being 5 roads, for which 'throw bridges at it' doesn't work, and doesn't have to deal with the same volume of traffic. So while I say it has more points of conflict, it's not proportionally *much* more, and I guess I can see where you got the comparison, but it wasn't obvious..
      For future reference, you may wish to consider the word 'egress', as although it's irregular, it is still the formal word in English for 'outgress'.
      'When you ingress into congress, if you transgress you will egress.' Consider that sentence *pun*ishment.

    That last junction is pretty much a "magic roundabout" but without being able to go straight. It's probably easier for drivers in the real world, but you cannot have an odd number of roads hooked up to the junction.
    Also 16:45 "a roundabout of only left turns is never going to be the ideal scenario" - tell that to British motorway engineers, who love putting roundabouts in inappropriate places, then adding traffic lights when junctions inevitably get overloaded with traffic.

  • @V1489Cygni
    @V1489Cygni 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    My pitch: a roundabout where each over/underpass connects not to the road directly in front but to the road imeadiately to it's left, since in a roundabout, turning left means staying in it the longest. Basically, you put the middle segment, split the roads into two one way roads, one goes into a bridge, the other into a tunnel, tweak it with node controller and network multitool and connect to the other bypasses. That way you'd remove the longest routes of the intersection. A dedicated lane would remove right turning traffic from the roundabout so you'd have even less conflict

      Real life would, in stark contrast, take into account the truly terrible (highly unsafe, badly positioned) pedestrian crossings, totally ignored here; cycle paths; existing utility infrastructure; minor road access for businesses/residences at the intersection (presumably the reason that it cannot be expanded in size, after all); drainage and sewer problems, highly impacted by the big concrete walls and the tunnel; and the higher visibility provided by using a bridge, that was here called "ugly". And in real life any lane closure caused by an accident or a utility company needing to do work would totally disable traffic flow in one or more directions with this intersection, because there would be no way to adjust to a temporary alternative layout. Do not confuse this game with how real life works. The game is a vast oversimplification here that _ignores everything_ except motor vehicles, and doesn't yield "well designed" real life stuff.

    Looks like a "double helix" interchange to me. The lane markings give it a kind of DNA vibe. And since each road does essentially cross itself in two spots you could consider each road to be a helical path. Hence, "double helix". Maybe not the most compact or aesthetic option, but it has its appeal.
    As for the main topic, I really like that kit. That's a brilliant solution that creates a very authentic intersection. I just wish they had a version with American markings. I have come to prefer proper American markings on my maps.
    I also wonder if you couldn't duplicate the effect with regular roads and node controller. Just like you used node controller to blow out the center node on the SPUI, blow out the outer nodes on this so you could have the center bypass parallel between a pair of 1-way roads all connected to the 6-lane road. It probably wouldn't look as tidy. But it would allow you to use whatever roads you wanted rather than being locked into the vanilla look. The actual intersection might be horrifically complicated with eight streets connected to one node though.

    That last intersection is absolutely INCREDIBLE. Imagine THAT as a CENTERPIECE for a major downtown leisure/commerce area... You could make it a "4 square" concept, boxing it off with a highway around the whole thing. One section is the metropolitan zoo, ones central park, ones casinos, and ones tourist attractions like maybe the amusement park. Or even without anything special like that, you just layer in the office buildings and the dense commercial, with a couple premium dense residential strategically peppered in(so mixed zoning overall).
    Like I could see that in a Los Angeles, Phoenix, or even Chicago New York, definitely in Toronto or Europe somewhere. No matter how ridiculous it seems functionally, its just a great design... Like I would want that to be in my town, its visually stunning and it just works...

Have each side of each leg off the circle cross the circle parallel-ish to the diameter, with a pedestrian plus in the middle, as well as walking on the inside and outside of the circle. You'd be crossing one lane at a time, maximum of 4 lanes crossed. Vehicles at the crossing points would be slowed due to turning and yielding to each other anyway.

    Very cool idea! It could be called "Displaced Left-turn Roundabout" because the idea of displacing left-turn movement to left-hand side of opposite direction of flow is similar to Displace Left-turn intersection, which is an official name given by FHWA.
    Completely unrelated, but from professional aspect, this configuration is not actually safer than a normal roundabout in real world. The idea of roundabout is to reduce speed (which this configuration does as well) and mitigate head-on or angle crashes because theoretically these two types of crashes lead to the worst crash severity. In traditional roundabout, as long as drivers don't run into the center island (which is unlikely if roundabout is properly signed), most of the crashes are sideswipe, which usually leads to property damage only. This configuration still has a lot of high-angled conflicts, so it doesn't really mitigate angle crash, but it does provide a better guideway of left-turn compared with traditional intersection.
    But again, game is game, please disregard the above paragraph...

      These “right of way” crossings on the “Divergeabout” are brilliant as I only see those 4 crossings as the only points of conflict which, as already mentioned elsewhere, have a high visibility safety point.
      Building this irl would be, although very efficient for traffic flow, very expensive due to the nature of the “tunnel and overpass” costs even though they could be built as a big dig and then covered as the construction advances.
      Having said that, if the “big dig” is taken into consideration, then adding pedestrian underpasses (with ramps and stairs) into the center would open the whole center area as a possible green zone. Of course safety measures would have to be implemented for “runaway cars” or cars falling off the side of the overpass - one never knows why, but it happens.
      Also, by adding pedestrian underpasses, exit routes for eventual accidents in the tunnel could be implemented, and also could be used for maintenance access.
      The only thing is, some form of drainage would have to be developed if a torrent (be it downpours or other flooding) occurs, but since lighting for the tunnel and underpasses would be essential, power for pumps and air ventilation should be available.
      Heck, it could open a whole business area for pedestrians… thinking about the way exits from some train stations in Europe are built where you can exit the station under ground and have shops and other facilities down there…
      I think I got somewhat carried away 🤪

  • @rayopeongo

    I didn't know this program existed, but I like it. One suggestion I would make, would be to double the through lanes to 2 each direction. That would widen your bridge and tunnel to 4 lanes instead of two. You would also have to combine your left and right turn lanes into one as they pass by the beginning of the ramps, but could be split back again into dedicated left and right turn lanes once they are past the ramps and could move under the bridge/over the tunnel. This design assumes that there are equal volumes of traffic going in all three directions: straight through; turning left; and turning right. I'm not sure what percentage of intersections have that distribution of traffic.

    • @YUMBL
      @YUMBL  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @rayopeongo

      Ok, I'll accept that. My mistake was assuming that just because there was 1 lane in each direction for each option: straight, left and right, that one third of the volume uses each lane. However, there might be a bit of a problem up-stream as all of the through traffic has to move to the far left to get through the intersection.

    • @YUMBL

      It passes more thru traffic easily because its free flowing. No conflict. Space would need to be left for lane changes before and after for turns at other intersections

    the "cursed" roundabout is just a streched crossroad without lights. and instead of 1 smooth turn you're basically snaking around the corner.
    So i will call it circular danger noodle.
    The 1st roundabout basically only had 1 lane because the outer lanes you had set up as right turn slip lanes.
    I'm guessing the backing up occured because all left turn traffic had to share the inner ring of the roundabout. The "fix" there is to increase traffic AI so they better know how to merge i think. and maybe an extra roundabout lane for left turn traffic.

    If you look closely at the first roundabout, you can actually see that a lot of the cars weren't using the over/underpasses. They for some reason decided that the roundabout was faster to go through. Giving some encouragement to the over/underpasses might actually fix the traffic quite a bit. While it might not be the best solution, one solution I usually employ is slightly bumping up the speed limit on the over/underpasses.

In my fantasy world where the lefts could be grade separated instead of the straights (leaving the straight and right to work through a turbo roundabout,) I think the title would still work. But I don't know how you could have grade separated lefts in this footprint, even with this mod. They would need individual one lane ramps. You could do it in real life, if you had the money and will, but I think it would fry City Skyline's brains.

      Well, it's just 4 more meshes to make if the asset pack's creator wants to allow that:
      single-lane tunnel entrance (right half of road only) - going down;
      single-lane tunnel exit (right half of road only) - going up;
      single-lane elevated road-on-wall (right half of road only) - for ramping up and down;
      single-lane bridge (on pillars) (right half of road only) - for curving over the intersection.

    Make it a 1-lane roundabout with sliplanes for right turns. In the 2 lane roundabout, the traffic turning right has to merge with the opposing traffic turning left INSIDE the roundabout, which is where I think your congestion comes from. If you had right-turn slips and literally ONLY the left-turn traffic entered the roundabout it would flow more smoothly. make it a CW flow and each left turn only affects one other lane instead of each one affected all 3.
    Actually, that's basically what you had at the very end, expect your was quite inflated for that purpose.
    Actually actually, scratch that. That's exactly what's happening at 14:19. That tiny diamond in the middle of the intersection is clearly a CW 1 lane roundabout. I think that's by far the best solution.

    The "bidirectional roundabout" is interesting, but you have four points where the traffic crosses (four "small" traffic lights possibly) whereas with the version where you have just the one big timed traffic light, that appears to work a lot better. At least visually.
    Very cool though.
    It's a bit of a shame that you need mods to be able to make this happen, but it also shows the expanded capabilities of the game itself, because it was written and developed with support for mods, and it is amazing to see how the community mods have VASTLY proved the functionality of the game, by extending the native game engine and taking advantage of it.
