  • There's this great TH-cam channel named 'Obsolete Video' that I came across recently. They acquire old videotapes from TV stations and other sources and digitize them. Last week they posted a 1972 'NFL Today' show from 1972 Week 2, the likes of which I've never seen before. At the end of that show was a wonderful Fran Tarkenton segment about his return to the Vikings, narrated by John Facenda. The NFL Films clips in that segment, per the norm for shows back then, were pretty bad. I was able to restore the majority of that segment and the original clips by finding the same shots in other films. I substituted similar shots for the ones I could not locate. Unfortunately the very last part of Facenda's audio is cut off, but I'm positive he says 'winner'. You can see the original segment quality here --- • KNXT-2 1972 NFL Today.

That guy's channel is fun, Dave. You've probably noticed there are other NFL items there; some of them require a little digging.

He may never have won the big game but Fran is still a legend. Amazing as short as he is he went 16 seasons before suffering a major injury and he would come back the next year. He put the Vikings back in the winners circle after Joe Kapp left in 1970.
The Giants never won much after '64 and sank to an all time low in '66 with a 1-12-1 record, a season everyone had just as soon forget.

If yardage running sideways and backwards was an NFL stat, then Fran Tarkenton would be the undisputed leader at QB.

Tarkenton was traded back to New York for a package of players including draft choices like 2nd round pick Brad Van Pelt #10

@0:11 ....this shot of a butterfly looks familiar. I believe they used this again in 1974 to start the highlights at LA in a late season contest against the Rams. ** EDIT ** In fact, it is. LOL They use this very same shot at 0:02 of the 1974 Vikings at Rams Week 11 highlights. Amazing that it stuck in my memory like this. Anyway, this segment is awesome. Thank you for uploading it.

I like the clip at 1:02 which is the same play shown at 1:37. That was probably my favorite clip of Tarkenton's scrambling but at a different angle.

When you use the REAL GOAT scoring system that first compares how a quarterback compares to the average quarterback of their era, Fran is the greatest quarterback of all time. He is the only quarterback to be the best for two non overlapping 7 year stretches. He held all the major records longer than any other quarterback and only sammy baugh is close. He did that even though the rules changed football into a passing game just as he was retiring. He also did that playing against what was far, far and away the most difficult schedule of any Hall of Fame quarterback. He is one of only 4 quarterbacks to be in the top 2 in the league 8 different seasons along with Manning, Brees and Unitas who come in 2nd, 3rd and 4th in that order. Brady, for instance, only accomplished that twice.

And back then they played 14 game seasons with only 2 games for the playoffs - no wild card games - so it was harder to pile up stats. Plus Tarkington is still eleventh all-time for passing TDs, is still 14th all-time passing yards and Tarkenton is the only QB to have a running touchdown in 15 different seasons.
Tarkington is The OG of "Scrambling quarterbacks." That term was coined specifically for Fran Tarkenton by one of his coaches (Norm Van Brocklin, iirc).
I'm a Cheesehead, and I grew up in the 70s. I won't lie, Fran Tarkington is tied for first as my all-time favorite NFL Player, because of the type of player he was on the field and the kind of person he was off the field (tied with Don Hutson and Reggie White).

Great improvement! Worthy of preserving for history sake...I really liked Fran as a kid.
Sadly there are alot of 'edits' on the material posted on that channel you mention...some 'artificial'.
