    The dude retired almost 45 years ago and is still 11th all time in TD passes. I have a sports almanac from the mid 90s and it's insane how far ahead he was of everyone then.

    Fran Tarkenton was so far ahead of his time it’s ridiculous when you think about it. Fran Tarkenton was doing things in the 70’s that are being done in today’s NFL. The next duel threat QB to come along after him was some 15 years later when Steve Young came around and even he was considered ahead of his time. Fran Tarkenton was an amazing player that needs more recognition.

    • @GangsterofloveSpacecowboy
      @GangsterofloveSpacecowboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      But the difference is Fran scrambled for his receivers to get open, and Steve scrambled to run that’s why he got out of the game early because of too many concussions.

    I started watching football in 1966 I was 11 years old. The first game I saw was with Fran and I assumed that this is what all quarterbacks did or performed. After watching other games I began to realize this wasnt true. So I kept watching week to week and realized that Fran was the exception. He really was extraordinary. I think his records still stand to this day because they played so few games back then to get such high statistics. To me he was and still is the game changer at the quarterback position.

      People may have mixed opinions about those old Vikings teams. But as an individual talent, Tarkenton was phenomenal. When the league put out that list of top 10 qbs of the century, Tarkenton was the only guy who got left off the list that I felt should have been on there. I'd personally put him on there ahead of Manning or Favre....he was like a one man offense...worth the price of admission by himself...

    Growing up in Minnesota during the era of Fran Tarkenton, the purple people, eaters, Bill Brown, Dave Osborne, etc. we never missed a Viking game. The thing that is indelibly etched in my memory and will be as long as I live is hearing my mom react when Fran was under pressure. A very high pitched streak “get outa there!” Or “look out”. His near death escapes turned my calm understated. Mild mannered mom into it loud shrieking woman. Unless you were in our family, you wouldn’t have believed it was this person. Unforgettable.
    Thanks Fran!

    • @MinisterManDan
      @MinisterManDan ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I’m so glad you mentioned that. People need to understand that Fran was doing all that when DEFENSIVE HOLDING DIDNT EXIST YET. It just wasn’t the same league as today where having a top QB is such a huge advantage. It didn’t matter how great your qb was, you HAD to be able to run the ball and the Vikings never really had that Franco or OJ or Csonka type.

    • @lawrencelittlefield5254
      @lawrencelittlefield5254 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would say he wouldn't be as special under the 1978 and later rules, because he didn't have the greatest arm, and the plays are sent in from the bench. That would have diminished the value of his intelligence, and athletic ability. Under the new rules, perhaps someone like Sonny Jurgenson would have been the greater quarterback, but he was not mobile and ended up getting hurt. Tarkenton set records because he retired with the most games played at quarterback in history.

    I was born and raised in Mankato, MN. home of the Vikings training camp till just a few years ago, and lived thru the 70's knowing only one name in football: Fran Tarkenton. Training camp was always exciting, and my older brother used to come home with autographs every day. I begged him for a Tarkenton autograph till he gave me one (I was 7). #10 was and still is my favorite QB of all time.

      I hate the way we reduce an individual’s career to team accomplishments. I get a great player shouldn’t spend most of his career having losing seasons, but there’s only so much one guy can do. What did he not do? Was he supposed to get on defense and tackle Larry Csonka and Franco Harris before they broke the record for most rushing yards in a Super Bowl in consecutive years against his defense?

    Well done! FT was one of the best ever and your well-done video shows why. He saw the whole field while scrambling, and created opportunities for his receivers; he was fearless; he had great touch, timing, accuracy, and threw a catchable ball; he was masterful throwing on the run. Had to laugh when Bradshaw was chosen the QB of the seventies. You put Tarkenton on those Steeler teams and Bradshaw would have ridden the pine.

    the rule change in 1978 that disallowed contact passed 5 yards down the field and only one hit at the line of scrimmage (before then you could be touching the reciever 15 20 yards down the field hitting them onto the ground in the middle of their route on a blindside, holding etc until the ball was thrown and even then they allowed a lot of contact, also recievers used to be able to get hit multiple times until they fell down before they ever left the line of scrimmage to run their route) (now after this rule change they still allowed a lot of contact to about 10 yards down the field up until jim irsay got on to the competition committee and they started enforcing the rule circa off season of 2004, but still it was nothing like it was before 1978)
    My point is if you look at fran's stats he had his best year yardage wise his last season 1978 after 2 years of declining, now he threw his most interceptions that year, but still that rule change drastically changed the NFL. Fran's numbers even in a 14 game season would have been astronimcally higher if the rules had of been changed earlier in his career.
    I always think guys like marino elway montana that benefited from the rules change would have been great if the rules would have stayed the same but they wouldn't have the numbers they have same with the guys from today not even close. The game has changed so much people don't understand the reason we have offenses now and the offensive revolutions that have happened over the years is more to do with the rule changes and the way the game is officiated then it is some genius coach coming up with a new scheme.

    Surprised none of the highlights of Fran that I have seen ever mention the fact he was more than willing to pitch the ball to any team mate even a tackle, which often resulted in a fumble, and the coaches ended up discouraging him of that. Growing up a fat kid that knew I was never going to play any position but tackle or guard, I really appreciated the fact he was willing to pitch the ball to his linemen.

    There are some real bums out there with a Super Bowl ring on their hand. You don't remember them now and you'll remember them even less twenty years from now, but nobody will forget this guy or Dan Marino for a LONG, LONG TIME.

      HOLY COW! Yesterday I found a couple Cowboys fans giving props to the '69 Vikings and today...a CHEESEHEAD praising Francis? I've crossed over into Bizarro World. I guess it's time to admit I've always kinda cheered for the Packers when they were the last central/north division team standing during the playoffs. Never cheered for the Bears in the playoffs, though. And if I'm being really honest, I'd probably shed a tear for the Lions if they ever made it to the Super Bowl.

    Tarkenton and Staubach were the original "Dodgers" of Football. The Montana and Elway's owe their inspiration to them. Throwing on the Run as their style.....they made their own "pocket."

    Gotta love his wallowing duck 1st throw to amad .., the two defenders both jumped up at the same time causing the ball deflect off there hands extending the distance to the intended person

    The Vikings are only 4 games away from being among the elite teams in the NFL mostly because of Fran Tarkenton!

    I despise the Vikings but the early Vikings like Chuck Foreman and the Purple People eaters and Bud Grant, where great, and IMO the greatest is Fran Tarkenton.

      Yeah they're pretty similar I'd say in terms of play style. Could also say the same about Russell Wilson and Roger Staubach.

      grew up feeling the same. Staubach was #1 because when he ran he usually did so gaining ground where as Fran would scramble to find time to throw. Surprised none of the highlights of Fran that I have seen ever mention the fact he was more than willing to pitch the ball to any team mate even a tackle, which often resulted in a fumble, and the coaches ended up discouraging him of that.
