love the football dribble at 4:26. From Wikipedia: In his first season with the Philadelphia Eagles (In 1951, after playing with the Lakers two years), Grant played as a defensive end and led the team in sacks (an unofficial statistic at the time). He switched to offense as a wide receiver for his second season with the club and ranked second in the NFL for receiving yardage, with 997 yards on fifty-six catches, including seven touchdowns.

I used to shovel snow out of the stands at the old Met Stadium. That stadium was built in such a way that the visiting teams got that subzero wind right in their faces and the Vikings were protected by the stands. That clip you are referring to is TCF Stadium and it was a playoff game with the Seahawks. Bud did the coin toss at midfield.....and was smiling.

I remember that. I met Karl Kassaulke shortly afterwards and was in awe of him. When it was my turn I told him that "I still had a football card of him." He was so surprised he smiled from ear to ear that he reached over to me and shook my hand. This was late 70's. As a kid I wondered what I said but happy whatever I said. Wish I could meet him again.

I've been a Steelers fan since before they won anything but I had a deep respect for the Minnesota Vikings. The television cameras made coach Grant look mean, bitter, and ice cold but nothing was further from the truth. Bud Grant was a warm and compassionate father figure. A true leader. One of the great ambassadors of the game. We need more coaches like Bud Grant today.

That Steelers defense though was just unreal. They did it for 6 years. The bears in 85 and the Ravens in 2000 did it for 1 year. In 76 the Steelers gave up like 29 points in their last 7 or 8 games. They didn't win the super bowl that year but they had 5 shutouts in 8 games. Amazing. Those teams earned every win they got back then.

As a kid living in New Jersey I quickly became a fan of the 70s Vikings and the memories of those warriors are very special to me today. Even living thru the pain of their Superbowl losses will never take away all they accomplished and just how unique that time in history was. I always was so prideful of how they played outdoors. Thank you!!!!!

@Donald Wilcox - I had the exact same experience from the other side of the country. As a kid growing up in Seattle, we didn't have a local team in the 70's. The Vikings became my favorite team the first time I can remember seeing a football game on TV in 1969 as the Vikings beat the Rams in the NFC championship game behind Joe Cap. Regardless of how well the Seahawks are doing from year to year, the first score I look for at the end of the day on Sunday is the Vikes game.

Lions fan here. I grew up watching the great Vikings teams of the 70s. Really liked Fran Tarkenton, Alan Page, Carl Eller and Jim Marshall. They were very tough, but the real intimidator was the man on the sidelines, wearing either a shirt or light jacket in the Arctic temperatures. Talk about tough! How do his players not run through a wall for him? No heaters on the sidelines? I remember when Wayne Fontes was at Lambeau Field on a cold day, wearing a freaking parka with a hood that went a foot in front of his face. I loved watching the games at the old Metropolitan Stadium, the "frozen tundra." What a weapon against warm weather teams. The Rams players huddling around the heaters was hilarious. I also loved the "Viking Formation." What class! RIP, Coach. You will always have the unwavering respect of this Lions fan.

Mr. Grant coached in the Canadian football league prior to coming to Minnesota He was also beloved in Canada and still talks fondly of his time in Winnipeg where he coached the blue bombers to many CFL championships
he was offered the Vikings head coach job in the early 1960s but felt a loyalty to Winnipeg and stayed until 1967 and we came to Minnesota to head coach the the Vikings

I am really glad I watched this. Knew of Bud Grant, but now I have a whole newfound respect for this classy gentleman and coach. In my eyes, he was clearly one of the finest coaches ever and developed his team chemistry the right way. Amazing to think that in 4 tries they couldn't win one, but they played amazing teams and played them tough, much like the 90s Bills. I give Mr. Grant so much credit, I respect the heck out of that guy and his perspective on life. He did life right, and still does at 91!

I'm so glad I was a kid in the 60s and a teen in the 70s. This is the football I grew up with and played in high school. Two a day practices, tackling drills, hit and spin on the seven man sled with your shoulder!, pass blocking with the chicken wing, arm pads, and guys who didnt make 20 million a year and complain about everything.
