- NFL Films "Best Ever Quarterbacks" narrated by John Facenda. From an old VCR recording. This is the original version from the late 1970s-early 1980s; the same feature was later updated with much the same footage and music, but a different narrator.
For those wondering, at the time this was made Joe Montana was just finishing his college career at Notre Dame, and Tom Brady would have been a toddler, hence why neither is mentioned. - บันเทิง

why would anyone update it with some other narrator?? I'd be hopping angry if I'd bought the dvd with someone else's voice.!!! I supposed they threw out the oirignal soundtrack and put in the synthesizer junk in it's place. Grrrrrrr!!!!!!!!
It's like a somber Mike Wallace voice but on steroids! Watched the NFL Films with my Pop in the 60's/70's and John's voice is what got me hooked on watching football (well, and Steve Sobal too).

@@muffs55mercury61 Yeah, that's why I put this up, even in the condition its in. I can understand why they couldn't do the new QBs with Facenda - impossible as he had passed away by then - but its a shame that his work just got tossed out with the update.

I was a big fan of Fouts, Stabler, Staubach and Bradshaw. Growing up a Lions fan and having their home games blacked out, I was able to see the best QBs a lot
Grew up watching Facenda anchor the news on Channel 10 in Philly. Helped inspire my own broadcasting career.

@@briankirchoff-thevoiceover424 He got the NFL Films job because Ed Sabol brought footage that he got to a bar that was popular with those in the news industry (until a few years ago, it was a KFC) and Facenda said a few things about it on the spot.

In those days, John Facenda and Sabol's NFL Films were better than the actual games.
The NFL had better thank their lucky stars that Ed Sabol was a football fan. He did more to sell the game than just about anyone.

Tarkenton was an incredible scrambler. I loved watching his highlights back in the 70's. The play @18:25 shows Tarkenton keeping the play alive and scrambling for over 23 seconds from when the ball is hiked to when he eventually passes it.

Steve Sabol and those NFL history films narrated by John Facenda was the reason I would sit and watch the games on Sunday. I can still hear those horns blasting.

Nobody but nobody could narrate NFL Films or any films the way John Facenda did. I'll never forget how heartbroken I was in 1983 when he died. I grew up watching all the NFL Films he narrated and was always in awe of his voice and that's because he had the Voice of God. There isn't anybody on this planet nor has there ever been someone with a Voice like John Facenda. I have one issue with this film. How could you have a documentary about the "Best Ever Quarterbacks? & not mention Bart Starr especially when this film was made in the 1970's?

Fran Tarkington could. cramble like no other NFL QB. That in itself made him the most entertaining QB in NFL TO DATE 👍🏻

This was long before the Brady-era protect the quarterback rules were even thought of.
No argument the game was more brutal then but you do realize Brady has been sacked over 500 times.

If brady played in this era 10 sacks tops and that would have been it.....end of career
I learned so much about football watching the clips he would announce.
Terry Bradshaw rode a very strong run game and the best defense of the 70's. He was in an enviable position as a qb.
True for the '74-'75 Steeler teams, but by '78-'79 he was among the elite QBs (lead the NFL in TD passes in '78). What's interesting is that he only made 3 Pro Bowls and 1 All-Pro team, but is in the HoF; as with Starr (4 Pro Bowls, 1 All-Pro), leading a team to many championships is the most important factor for QBs.
He was also a great athlete with an even greater arm. Clutch as can be, all the intangibles.
@@TomG1555 Terry was surrounded by a TON of talent and was not asked to do much. He averaged less than 2,000 yds passing a year, and only 166 yds a game. He had a career 51.9% completion percentage. Averaged 15 passing TD's a year. Those stats are nothing to write home about. He was lucky to be part of the team he was on.
@@bluesky7333 Unitas' averages were "only" 54% completion percentage, 2,200 yards per season, 16 TDs/season, and he was regarded as the best QB of his era (perhaps of all time). The shift to pass-first offenses wouldn't happen for many years, well after Bradshaw had retired, which makes stat comparisons to today's QBs problematic.
@@TomG1555 Johnny Unitas played before Terry when running was even more prevalent AND before passing interference rule changes in 1974. When downfield contact was allowed Unitas had a passing TD in 48 straight games. Terry has 27k passing yds while Unitas had 40k. Terry only 212 TD's compared to 290 by Unitas. One was a pure passer and the creator of the two minute drill. Terry had 212 passing TD's and threw 210 INT's. Unitas had it much harder with rules and still had better production AND better completion %. Terry's completion % was with rules to make it easier for passing. That comparison is poor for Terry.
Will we ever see HOF QBs like these guys ever again? It seems like something is missing in the QB position these days.
I remember this segment the first time it ever aired and the part I remember most is the awsome music and story of Y.A. Tittle.

The updated NFL Films "Best Ever Quarterbacks" (1985) was narrated by Jeff Kaye, and it included in the updated version (the segments of Dan Marino and Joe Montana)

And this is how I answer the oft asked question, how does a guy born in San Diego become a lifelong Vikings fan? In the early 70's, John Facenda and NFL Films brought into my sunny home a frozen alien world populated with Purple People Eaters, Chuck Foreman, mad scrambling Fran Tarkenton and the Midwest equivalent of my Texas born grandpa, Bud Grant. At any mention of the Vikes, my older, much larger brother made me play Goal Line where he'd be Chuck Foreman starting at the tv, and I'd always be Carl Eller defending the couch. If nothing else, I learned to wrap up...

I like how John Facenda says the word "scrambling" with an air of disgust, which I think adds to the whole scrambling narrative affixed to Tarkenton. For what it's worth, I remember that play Steve McNair made in Super Bowl XXXIV which set up the game's conclusion, and it reminds me of the Tarkenton highlights here.
That play where Staubach passes the winning touchdown past the Vikings still pisses me off. Pearson pushed off before making the catch. The Ref didn't call it. The owner of the Cowboys was on the NFL Rules committee. I'll let you make the obvious conclusion.
For me, Bart Starr, Fran Tarkenton and Johnny Unitas will always be the best.
Football is not my favorite sport but the Quarterback and Running Back are my favorite positions to watch
Actually, Mr Fascenda, grammatically only ONE can be called "the greatest ever".
Namath looked ahead of his time - the way he threw the ball.
He was - the stats bear that out. Interestingly, the Jets didn't become Super Bowl-good until Namath reigned in being so pass heavy & taking so many gambles (that led to INTs), and relied more on their D and running game than they did in the years where he was putting up 3,000-4,000 yards passing.
Namath had a quick release that hadn’t been seen before.
Injuries are part of sports that's really unfortunate how a lot players careers get cut short.
Pro North American football has one of the shortest average career spans of all, eh? On those who last it leaves a mark.
LOVE John Facenda. The ONLY thing that ever annoyed me is when he said "World Championship" Its not a World Championship, its an NFL Championship. American teams are the only ones in the NFL. If all nations had teams in the NFL, then World Championship would be accurate...

Like vintage wine, football during the 60s were better. John Facenda the voice, and the rules, and the uniforms, the field, the music, and Dick Butkus, John Unitas and Jim Brown and Roman Gabriel who's better than Tarkenton and the new AFL and Vince Lombardi and the Packers, and ..... trust me, much much better.

Great documentary on the QB's but where is Sid Luckman on this list?
Agree he belongs there, but there may be only limited usable/quality footage of Luckman, since his career was mostly in the 1940s (although Baugh was a contemporary, so who knows). Don Hudson and Jim Thorpe suffer from the same problem: all-time greats, but there's just very little film of them.
The intro picture of this showed Bradshaw. His PICTURE doesn't even belong.

Oh, it's just heartbreaking to see the daily struggles of poor old "Broadway" Joe Namath. All that money and fame in the number 1 city in America and it's really tough for Joe. I mean c'mon, the poor guy was simply trying to get along. It must have really been a tough road for old Namath. I mean, for goodness sakes, @6:50 he was "just trying to get by".
For folks like my Dad (RIP), Unitas with his military-short haircut and old style matters was The Guy, while Namath exemplified the '60s lifestyle they disdained. Which is a shame, b/c Namath came from a coal/steel worker family near Pittsburgh and did show remarkable toughness in playing at all with all the knee surgeries he had; he had an image that he knew would sell, and it did, but underneath he was a grinder like Unitas (who he idolized growing up).
unlike 1985 video I know, since made 1979, a couple of extra minutes on Namath (covering his fall), no Marino (instead Archie Manning, father of Peyton Manning), no Montana (instead Len Dawson). not surprised made 1979, because 1985 video, though memorable for me as kid c.1990, didn't have the glossy finish most 1985 type videos did.
Much as it pains me to say it, if they redid this today, Marino probably only gets a brief mention. One of the great gunslinger QBs, but the lack of a SB win hurts him badly and his stats have gradually been eclipsed by Brady and Brees. Fouts probably doesn't get mentioned at all, sadly.
Wonder what he would have said about Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Joe Montana, and John Elway?
What's interesting is who they would have to drop in the piece to make room for them. Unitas certainly would have to stay, and possibly Staubach, but the rest...hard to say. Tarkenton would probably get a 10-15 second segment as the first great scrambling QB, rather than the whole section he gets here.

Tarkenton may have been the first true NFL scrambler but it is ROGER STAUBACH who perfected the art. Roger was better on every level than Tarkenton and here is the amazing thing about Roger. Sire scrambling was to avoid being tackled, however when it was time to lower his head, Roger was the Earl Campbell of scrambling QB''s. Roger would lower his head and go into a pile. Also, Aikman would do the same thing, in a preseason game during 1994 Troy did just that, split his chin wide open, got whiplash and that was for a reason: A little boy was dying and has less than a week to live and he wanted a touchdown ball, well Troy got him one and the boy died soon afterwards.
Tarkenton didn't really run that much down field he would just scramble around. Staubach was the first QB that would take off running down field.

Unfairly or not, Super Bowl performances shape historical legacies in a big way. Lamonica's Raiders lost SBII, Namath's Jets won SBIII. That's a big part of why Namath is in the HOF and Lamonica isn't.
Not including Bart Starr in here is as shameful as it is prepostrous. He was the league's highest rated in 1962, '64 and '66. MVP of the first 2 superbowls. Led his team to 5 championships.

Roger Staubach retired after the 79 season rated as the best QB of all time Now I am not one for stats but I will say this, if the ball was thrown back then as it is now, these great QB's of years gone by would still be seen as the pinnacle. For me before 1983 the best QB's I saw were 5. Dan Fouts 4.Bart Starr (still to this day he does not get the credit he deserves) 3. Terry Bradshaw (I hated his cheap shot artist team) but people forget the beatings he took. Maybe the best thrower of the bomb ever, maybe. 2. John Unitas 1. The Total Package,, The original Captain Comeback, Captain Comeback, Roger the Dodger, CAPTAIN AMERICA and in February 1980 when he retired the BEST rated QB in NFL History: ROGER STAUBACH and just think he served his 5 year commitment to the Naval Academy: Roger Staubach. Roger should have started SB 5, we would have destroyed the Colts and in 1978 the Cowboys were screwed all over the field..Oh and he was the best scrambler as well: ROGER STAUBACH
If I take the period I watched (1974-present), I would rank em as follows... 1. Montana. 2. Brady. 3. Staubach. 4. Manning. 5. Favre. 6. Marino. 7. Bradshaw (a winner but not a good passer until 1978 at all), 8. Stabler. 9. Fouts. 10. Kenny Anderson (must under-rated QB of all time.)
The wonderful thing is Troy Aikman is just as classy as Roger. What Troy has done for sick children is amazing, I have seen it with my own eyes. Roger helped out Bob Hayes and Troy with Irvin. Romo had a a lot of class as well, as did Danny White. Yet Roger and Troy are on another level.

@@jimdep333 , true but so was Montana. Walsh just took the system he created in Cinn with Anderson at QB and then moved it to SF. Walsh even had Montana study tapes of Kenny Anderson in order to mimic this. Most great QBs are from "systems."
