They used PET plastic to make the GU figs, like most of the new SH Figuarts. PET is the recycling-friendly plastic used to make soda drink bottles, and it works OK for durability, but it doesn't seem to maintain as smooth a surface as ABS or POM or the Gunpla K-Polystyrene, so it tends to feel a little grindy and stiff at the joints.
Wow.. I am really disappointed to learn this fact... I've seen PET on recent Metal Build as well, extremely disappointing. If the Robot Spirits line goes PET instead of PVC... I think it will eventually.. it's over.
So as it turns out the labels on many Tamashii Nation boxes says PET but instructions still suggest ABS, PVC.. very confusing. Expert says the packaging is made of PET the figures are not.. maybe just the GU line and Figuarts
Dang i really wanted this to be good, like the opening chest part should've just been like the 2009 hg. looks like a rg god gundam is our only hope for a good affordable God Gundam (the 2009 hg just doesn't feel right)
Since you started the reviews of these GU figures, I always wondered why would anybody take something like this using their money. It's an obvious downgrade from the start. Even the market is very niche for this. Either you go robot damashii or go building the kits, which are the better options. But all in all, still, kudos to papa krow for being able to bear and continue these reviews. You've done us a great deed to avoid some mishaps.
Simple answer is folks like myself don’t like building gunpla. For 20, it’s good for an out the box ready toy. It looks nice on my shelf with my other Gundam Universe figures.
Because I don't want to spend 150-200$ CAD for Robot Spirits figures, and don't have time to enjoy the building of Gunpla. These figures aren't mindblowing, but they look great, hit all the biggest North American generations (Wing, G, UC, Seed AKA "The Toonami ones" ) and aside from some weirdness with effect parts not being present, are great for the price-point. I for one hope they keep this going for years to come, because it's the first Gundam based line I can pay for, play with, and collect from start to finish without costs going through the roof.
These are targeted towards for lack of a better term normies not hardcore Gundam fans. At best they're going for the people who maybe grew up watching Gundam on Toonami and get nostalgic when they see a Wing Gundam toy.
I'm still buying it. I want all of the GU figures and supporting my favorite Gundam series, unless it looks as bad as the 90s kits, im still getting it. I have the HG, but Bandai refuses to make more HGFC kits. At least these all look good on the shelf together in the GU line.

This figure is on the level of the old 1/144 scale kit just that the old kit came with a removable core lander, beamsaber and was like 1/4 of the price (ok the old kit couldn't open the chest) But if you want a God gundam go with eighter the HG or the MG
I would love to see you do some reviews on the mobile suit ensemble sd capsule kits they have great articulation and detail for the size. Plus massive potential for customization.
with those loose parts like the skirts.. yup it's just bad. The painted parts are nice except for the Burning finger hand, it looks more than a burnt out heat-rod without the glow. For transformation, It feels more like part-swapping rather than the functional HG model kit one.
They need to change how they do the skirt bits. Other than that and maybe some not picks with the accessories for some figures like barbatos' sword or the hands not being flexible enough to put it in I really like this line overall
What where you expecting from Gundam Universe. The Wing figures are the only good mobile suit in the Gundam Universe line of figures. Have you seen the mobile suits in wave 5? They are Nu Gundam, Sandrock and Char's Zaku 2.

im, *honest to god* , 7 seconds in and that stare says it all. I'm really dying to see a new God Gundam kit. Like i could really go for a HG revive with a lot of posing hands and god tier articulation for martial arts poses. that being said, i'm starting to believe that the universe line are better left inside the boxes. The packaging/box art alone is good enough for these. i got a couple myself and after a while i just decided to put them back in the box cause i like staring at the box rather than the actual figure lol
It's amazing the difference is from the old 3.75 inch mobile suit in action version which was beyond posable and came with all the accessories for about the same or less in price. Including both burning hands, 2 or 3 other sets of hands, beam sabers with blades, actual core lander and the rainbow effect. Nice sculpt but definitely not worth the price.
If Hasbro can make fully articulated Rangers and monsters at the 6 inch size, then so could Bandai with the Gundam Universe line. In the early 2000's they were making Gundams with accessories and articulation. The battle damage Burning Gundam from 2001 has more accessories and articulation than the Gundam universe line.
For 20$, it is what it is. But the Nu Gundam and Zaku II Char they showed off at Tamashii Nations earlier looked stunning. The Nu in particular looked like the Robot Spirits just upscaled. Would love to see a Crossbone or V2 in this line tho. They'd be solid figures that could fit in with the MG.
I really don't have very expectations for these figures given their price points since this is clearly more of a play toy than a model kit that you can play with. I guess this is a good entry kit for kids.
I have a battle damage msia god gundam and it wings turn into a fighter and chest go open(sorry never watched g gundam) so my battle damage god gundam i found on a yard sale looks much better than the gundam universe god gundam (sadly enough)
Really disapointed that the God Gundam and Talgeese didn't really improve anything on the previous release (Strike, Ez8, Wing Zero Custom). I've been really enjoying the Gundam Universe figure lately. I like to take my toys wherever I go outside for photography, so having Gundam figures that share the more or less the same size as my other 6 inch figures (Transformers, Star Wars Black Series, etc) while being extremely durable is really convenient. The sculpt work and paint are also really superb and crisp! However, one of my major criticism for this line is how cheap it can be. For example, the Beam rifle handles for Strike and RX-78 can't move, even though it can be solved with a simple hinge joint. And the beam sabers are made of hard plastic, why can't they just use the same material used for the beam sabers like in standard Gunplas? Construction for the skirt armor could really use some design change, using peg connection for each skirt really hinders the articulation. Wished they used balljoints instead like Master Grades do. Another of my biggest gripes is how the legs are designed. Main problem is that the leg is not proportionate, the shin is longer than the thighs, and it makes kneeling both difficult and looks unnatural (looks really weird on running poses too) Legs can kneel best when both shin and thighs are of equal length/proportion. TL;DR thighs are too short, shins are too long. The double jointed knee doesn't help much either, because when the legs are bend, it looks as if the middle point is located in the middle of the thigh instead of in the knee or the upper half of the shin, which again, LOOKS VERY UNNATURAL. So yeah, that's my rant for the line so far. Hope they really improve on the next wave.

The past figures have been solid, and thats what makes the flaws on this one stand out so much. The gundam looks fine, and its detailed enough. These are for action figure collectors, not model kit builders. As much as I loved to build gundam as a kid, those kits are just too expensive and time consuming now. But these figures give me a nice gundam collection without the time/effort commitment. My only complaint is the choice of the yellow, maybe it should have been pearled, or metallic or gold, its just too primary. For the price though, its fine. But it is unlike bandai to leave all the flash on the pieces very weird. Anyone notice a change in plastic in these figures thought?

G Gundam figures should be articulated asf PERIOD. But like someone else said before, if you want a line to get better... invest in it including when it’s bad but SPEAK OUT! Still hate that it didn't have beam sabers though.. The RX-78-2 I thought looked cool, moved well, and did what it needed to. The Unicron and Banshee were trash but hey extra beam saber parts. Even painted one green. Deathsycthe I think was perfect. It does exactly what it should. Barbatos I've never been a fan of in the show..but I actually do like the chunky design of it here. But if I was a fan of that suit design I'd be angry. Wing Zero EW looks great. The wings are garbage and it has hardly any articulation with them. Also the lack of beam sabers is terrible. Its smaller wings are way to small. I dont have Strike and EZ-8 but from what I've seen they look mostly fine. Wish Strike had a pack though. So its been a mixed bag. The potential for these to be great is there they just need to care a little more. And the $20 to $25 price tag is not an excuse for poor product. McFarlanetoys..a much smaller company has been giving us great DC figures for $20. Some were misses but most are hits now. There are plenty of $20 toy lines that give way better quality that can be played with and durable too. Bandai is just being lazy with these.
in my honest opinion the old old 2000's MSIA God Gundam was better than this garbage, sure even though it was small, it had everything you saw in the show and it looked phenomenal, it had both beam sabers, both God Hands and it even had the glorious rainbow burning circle around its back, overall id prefer that over this any day
I’ve got the GU Banshee, which has about the same height and articulation as the MG Banshee Ver Ka. Zero flash, zero nubs, looks good. This God Gundam is like a No Grade 1/100 that some newbie built with some cheap nail clippers. What a turd. Drop it 🐕💩
The _Gundam Universe_ figure line is okay IMO, but not worth buying myself. Sure it makes sense to give this a much better range of movement to the poses better. But these are roughly $30 (give or take) figures so they probably had to cut corners here and there. It's a shame that on top of the cuts to articulation, this doesn't even have beam effect parts or removable beam saber handles. I agree the HGFC version is a better choice for roughly the same amount of money. The MGs are okay, but they're noticeably dated. In that regard, I think we're overdue for an MG GF13-017NJ Shining Gundam [Ver2.0] and MG GF13-017NJII God Gundam [Ver2.0] along with the others.

@@s3d17 Chogokins still use ABS/POM with diecast bits, Spirits might be just the lesser line in that case.

Check Japanese auction sites for Robot Spirits God Gundam preowned. It is nearlt 1/144 and a damn good one

Oh that Hot Toys Alita. That figure has ridiculous detail on the Berserker body. I bought 2. One to have with and without the included outfit.

Sure it makes sense to give this a much better range of movement to the poses better. But these are roughly $30 (give or take) figures so they probably had to cut corners here and there.
It's a shame that on top of the cuts to articulation, this doesn't even have beam effect parts or removable beam saber handles.
I agree the HGFC version is a better choice for roughly the same amount of money. The MGs are okay, but they're noticeably dated.
In that regard, I think we're overdue for an MG GF13-017NJ Shining Gundam [Ver2.0] and MG GF13-017NJII God Gundam [Ver2.0] along with the others.
