No murders, no sordid affairs , no long lost children coming back. Corrie now has been ruined imo. Great characters, great storylines and very well acted back 8n the day
IMO the writers of soaps today want to be American. Like Days of our Lives, General Hospital, The Young and the Restless. Utter nonsense. These old Corrie episodes are wonderful.
The TV producers don't grasp that you need a balance of drama and humour. Gentle humour/ misunderstandings is not only an option it's an essential ingredient.
The difference between today and this. I don’t think it’s untrue to say the only connection is the title of the programme. I do not watch the show today. This is the true meaning of the good old days. Ena Sharples what a woman.I’ve watched a lot of older coronation street programmes of late and they feed you. The stuff made today doesn’t interest me , I so wish it did entertain me as it’s sad that such a programme with its past style , excellence and unique qualities just doesn’t grab me as it did once
Easy to forget this was 53 years ago. It's as distant in time as 1916 was to 1969. It's a blessing that we are living longer now, but the painful side is that we all have to accept that the world we grew up with eventually dies and disappears.
The way Jack Walker talked Betty and Hilda into accepting Annie's gifts - just beautiful and subtle writing and acting, and I love the dark humour between Ray and Ena - so appreciated by Ray who didn't want to be mollycoddled - very very cleverly done.
The early episodes of Coronation Street are just Brilliant, storylines, characters, a perfect blend of drama and humour, I wish life was that good now!
At 21:31 when Ena & Emily sing "In Dublin's Fair City", I can only say that it is the best duetted version I have ever heard of it. Violet Carson herself was such an amazing singer and I have her hymns and arias in my collection. The way these two crooned this beautiful song together made me feel so much better from the inside. It is true when people have said and commented on some of these videos that Coronation Street will not be as amazing as it was then, ever again. I don't need to explain why because I think even just the talent shown in this small performance not to mention the whole episode and all other episodes till about 1984 (when Pat Phoenix (Elsie Tanner) leaves), explains it all perfectly. I also adore Minnie & Valerie's short scene in the hairdresser's at 2:54. Minnie is so adorable! Bless em all! Honestly always makes my day. Thank you for sharing this. It is indeed much appreciated.
That’s why I watch a lot of these “classic” episodes (that and the fact that some of my hobbies and jobs from the past have sorta-required it). I don’t mind 2022 Corrie (it’s nowhere-near as bad as it was under Blackburn) but without a lot of these key legendary figures (or even the likes of Candice, dare-I-say) it just doesn’t feel the same.
Yes, but Corrie Codswallop is better than no codswallop at all...and we get to watch these nice episodes. Thanks very much to the persons who take time to make it possible.
I see Granada made it in colour , there weren't that many colour sets in the UK in 69. A neighbour had one and it got stolen !!. Thanks for uploading it .
I had the privilege of visiting the set as a photography student in 1988. Went in the Rovers and it was tiny. Met Liz Dawn (Vera) at lunch who sat on our table in the nearby pub over the road, tipped her short into her pint glass of beer and winked at me.
Wonderful episodes and acting and writing! Thank you so much for posting these gems. I wouldn't have seen them otherwise. I wish the current Coronation Street could bring back at least some of the talent from this era.
Serious shades of the Dietrich movie: The Blue Angel, in the stage act of Irma and Bernard. Scary. Sad. Thanks again for taking the time to post. Such a treat.
Erm, you're joking? There was a lot of drugs in the 60s. You had Jimmy saville, Cyril Smith, and a galaxy of other child abusers. You had the krays and the Richardsons. The 60s were as nasty as any other decade, it was just all brushed under the carpet.
Love these old episodes, absolute gems! Similarly,I’ve recently watched old(1972) episodes ofemmerdale, slower but much more gripping than the rubbishy programme they put out now!

See how easy it is to ressurect arguments over a short glass of port after over 50 years ? All you have to do is watch Coronation Street and its as fresh as the day it was made.
Soaps of that era struck the right balance between drama and humour. Todays soaps both tv and radio seem to go for shock value with over dramatic storylines. Which is why I don’t watch or listen to them anymore.
Thanks again for the treat. Although it's Christmas, if Ray wasn't in the wheelchair....I'd be more than tempted to throw in a towel, grab Bernard and say: "The fights over, kid. It's not your night." And then announce that the real show was a fistfight with Ray and I onstage.
It’s nothing like this now 😢😢 what a shame 😢 I blame the current producer Ian McCloud. It’s absolutely Rubbish now. I can understand why Beverly Callard left the show! Crap story lines ! No humour, no light hearted stories !! 😢😢
Coronation Street today has become sensationalist with a constant need to excite the viewer at all costs. No matter how extreme and unbelievable the storyline. It’s total rubbish and totally lost its meaning. It’s nice to head back and see what it used to be about.
There are many comments outlining the differences between the Coronation Street of 1969 and of the current age. Especially, the lack of sensationalism, crime in general and the need to shock. What we forget is that each generation of Coronation Street reflects the age in which we live. The episodes of today reflect how society has become. More connected and better informed in many ways, yet more disjointed and more ignorant. The society of 1969 were also far less mobile and were very aware of their position within a group as an individual. We are now far more mobile and the emphasis has shifted greatly to the individual, thus weakening that group mentality. Mountains are all too often now made of molehills whereas with the issue of the necklace in this episode, it was resolved and put to rest with a simple gift of a pair of stockings ('nylons' as they called them). The molehill, thus remaining a molehill and being easily flattened. Of course, 1969 wasn't without its social problems either and was certainly not an easy life, but people had the ability to be more content with their lot in life. That is a skill that I think we have somewhat lost despite having more.
I can’t remember the last time I watched coronation street it’s absolutely rubbish the best days were the 70s 80s&90s these days it’s like hollyoaks I can’t bear watching that rubbish either
