THE DEEP DARK 70's. No matter how bleak life could be be back then with power cuts-3 day weeks-strikes etc. The strkes were the worst. Miners got beaten up by the police by-the police. It need to be said twice. The striking dockers & leyland car factory workers succeeded fantastically in helping the closure of the London docks and bring an end to the British motor industry. Ending 100's of years for Dockland families, thevcommunities, the history, the skills. The perks especially! And a job for life. All gone. Miserable run down housing estates, 3 day weeks, living with drunk parent and stepdad who spunked the whole families fortune, including 5 stores in prime central London Real Estate. But every single time I heard the theme tune to Corrie the world suddenly became okay again. It was a 'ahh I can let go now, Corries on' moment. Beautiful. It was also easy to pick the story line up if you'd missed a week or even a month. Full of wonderful actors, who I personally think were some of the best in the world. Thanks yt 💞💕💫
Annie's face at 23:01! Absolutely amazing. I'm only 20 years old and I love Corrie. Love it nowadays and having watched clips like these, the old days were amazing too
Jack walker what a great character & played so well by Arthur leslie .was 9 at the time this episode was shown . Gorden Kaye was in this episode (RENE) ello ello .
The difference between Corrie now and then ( apart from the obvious ) was the quality of writer they had then . The strong women characters and humour were the two main things that set Coronation Street apart. The Gordon Kaye character seems like a forerunner of the Curly Watts character later on .
Yes the quality of writing was superb, and the wise words people said. It keeps your attention. Compared to today where characters just mumble and shout and end up in court...
"Want to start watching Coronation Street again but not the current episodes however the classic episodes have a mixture of both drama and comedy and characters that made you tune into for each episode and the scenery of 70's England is great."
Yes,I agree Coronation Street in the '70's,'80's and '90's was much better than modern episodes of Coronation Street, they blended drama and comedy just like Brookside and(Take the)High Road used to do with their exciting storylines.
Back in the days when coronation street was worth watching. Great scripts with a wonderful mix of drama and comedy. Gritty realistic characters played brilliant actor s unlike today's dull boring and depressing storylines and paper thin characters...
Agree. He also came across a bit more as if he was trying and decent. Whereas later the writing just made him to be a lazy slob everyone despised. Which was sad.
The actor Bernard had a stroke in real life and this sadly affected his speech and later on his movement in future episodes. Not his fault and fair play to Coranation Street producers for allowing him to return to work. Stan's deterioration in health was never written into the program or mentioned . His best scene was when him allowed himself be a hostage instead of Minnie after the American Joe first held their Emar hostage in the flat above the corner shop and later a terrified Minnie in her house.
Great episode - love Len's sleek hair and Bet coming back - thought was her on the dance floor. Really love the wee clubs shown in early 70s episodes and Annie and Jack are still gold together.
Sandra Gough...Irma...has been a major part in two of soaps most iconic families. Firstly, the daughter of the legendary Stan and Hilda Ogden. And then 25 years later, the original Matriarch of the notorious Dingle clan of Emmerdale. I loved her in Corrie, not so much in Emmerdale though.
One of the reasons the writers presented Irma as getting over her husband's and son's deaths very quickly is that in following episodes she suffers depression, moves in with Bet Lynch and becomes promiscuous. A delayed reaction to the grief.
Ive been watching all these episodes since the first one (one's that are available) i love these classic Coronation street's the Characters were so much better, i was born at the beginning of the 70s so i remember alot of these Characters from my childhood, Sadly not Jack Waker or a few others, Jack was such a great character, shame he passed suddenly in 1970
I'm not sure whose creative decision it was to have Irma act like the death of her beloved husband and son was something that didn't even faze her but the tone is all wrong. Everyone doesn't seem the least bit sad about this tragedy at all. Really odd way of dealing with the death of a major character........ Meanwhile Julie Goodyear makes her reintroduction back onto the show in a run that would last 25 years.......
You can make up some great names for characters for Coronation Street... Rita Barthorpe... there's one, erm... Ted Rump... Elsie Smarge... Ralf Bettingham... Len Hammersmelge... Dr Hillary Faneighcomb... etc etc
Bernard Arthur Popley used to sit in his chair in his flat 2nd floor up and waved back to us as we waved if he was there when coming home from High School in the year 1983.
Hilda said to Stan" ur only daughter" twice when arguing with him about lrma and Dave Smith . Hilda and Stan had 4 children,2 girl's and 2 boy's. Only lrma (Freda) and her brother Trevor (Dudley)( both changed their christian names) were ever seen in Coranation Street when Hilda and Stan bought No.13. The other 2 childrenwere taken into care year's before Hilda and Stan arrived on Coronation Street . Silvia and Tony younger brother and sister to Freda and Trevor Ogden.
Yes - And there is still time for said Silvia Ogden to turn up in Coronation Street looking for her mam - Maybe played by Joan Collins with having been put in care having turned out for the best for Silvia
"What did you want, love, a packet of Fruit Gums?". …"Erm, yes. Of course I do. I literally just asked you for a packet of Fruit Gums, not a second before you asked me if I wanted a packet of Fruit Gums. But I'm being paid by the word, so I wasn't supposed to say any of this.".
Reginald Marsh always played 'Flash Harry'/Arthur Daley type roles with few morals.. wasn't he Terry Scott's boss in Terry and June? And what did happen to The Tex Matthew Caribbean Rhythm?
Betty Turpin is a pomegranate. Hilda Ogden has a daughter. I never knew any of this :/ Elsie Tanners cast off is Tom Good's boss in The Good Life isn't it?

Stan threatens to "clout" Hilda if she doesnt shut up, and later Jack tells Annie that if she had acted like Hilda she would get a "leathering" too, interesting! I find the club full of middle-aged men letching and pawing the young women a bit vile too! The 70s!
I try watching the current episodes but they are not the same and the characters especially the newer ones just aren't as interesting as these from the 60's and 70's.
Considering they eventually achieved legendary status for a long time the Ogdens didnt improve the show indeed they lowered the tone considerably. Hilda was a nasty interfering busy body and it wasnt until they teamed up with Eddie Yeats that they cemented their place as top characters.
Stan and Hilda Ogden are the most iconic couple 2 ever walk that street 💯
Stan Ogden and Jack Walker, an underrated friendship. Both chatted regularly in the Rovers, seeing as Stan was Jack's most regular customer.
Its amazing Hilda looked the same from the 60s through to the 80s she never aged remarkable
Indeed. Ms. Odgen in general was a legend.
I was just thinking the same thing!
I know, how that happened I don't know, she never has any facelifts or anything. she's an amazing actress.
@@Deborah4Antiques She never married or had kids might be the secret 🤣🤣

Annie Walker wouldn't recognise the Rovers if she saw it today.
Stan Ogden looked so much better in these episodes compared to 10 years later when he had put weight on and looked ill.
That's because the actor's health Bernard youens had suffered through his lifestyle - notably heavy smoking

@Snarzell 1975 I never saw her in Emmerdale, but I was watching when the new actress (Maggie Tagney) came into it as Nellie.
Irma one of my favorites
One of the reasons the writers presented Irma as getting over her husband's and son's deaths very quickly is that in following episodes she suffers depression, moves in with Bet Lynch and becomes promiscuous. A delayed reaction to the grief.
How groundbreaking for the time: pushing the boundaries of real-life experience of northern working class women in a regular drama .
Did Bet live with anybody who she didn't drive mad?
Hilda “I think you must be deteriorating’. Goin’ from worse to chronic.” 😂😂

Marvellous, thank you. Jack Walker suddenly seems much older I think - of course the actor, the wonderful Arthur Leslie, died the following month.
A young Gorden Kaye before he got the 'Allo, 'Allo gig a decade later!!!
Erma got over her husband and son's death pretty quick!
Agreed. She should have just divorced David and left him and their son in Australia. Maybe a new wife/girlfriend agreed to take on the childrearing.
I think it was her way of trying to deal with things.
only acting lmao
"you've pawned hildas best set of teeth"
Was this Arthur Leslie's last episode as Jack Walker before his death in June 1970?
I like the green wallpaper era in the Rovers.
