Astro A50 over 1 year later - An honest review (it's the best but also not)

  • This video was not sponsored by Logitech, but they did send me a replacement for my Astro A50. That said, this, as you'll see, is still an honest and maybe brutal review.
    #Astro #AstroA50 #BestGamingHeadsets
My first Astro A50 Gen 4 was acquired in August 2019 and at the time I thought it was awesome (See the review here - • Astro A50 Gen 4 (2019)... ) since then I've used a heck of a lot of other headsets, but the A50 gen 4 has remained my favourite for a number of reasons:
1 - Its comfort is unbeaten in my opinion
2 - The charging base station is super convenient and I very rarely need to plug it in
3 - The sound is great for gaming, music, movies or anything else
4 - It has a decent mic (not the best, but not awful either)
5 - It allows me to mic monitor my external mic setup via my GoXLR (very few wireless headsets allow this)
That's the highlights, the lowlights are:
    - It doesn't have Bluetooth like the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless
    - It doesn't have user replaceable batteries (unless you can solder)
    - The headband gets worn out over time
    - The design is quite flimsy considering what you're paying
    - There's no high res audio (like with the Audeze Mobius)

I got my gen2 in 2015. They still work to this day. And I used them a lot. Like... really a lot. And the plastic on the headband don't have such wear like Prawn's A50. No wear at all. Only problems I got over the years are:
      - Infinite volume wheel became buggy almost immediately. Like the volume randomly jumps between super loud and super quiet. I usually set up the comfortable volume once and try not to touch it. I got this problem in first 2 years I think.
      - I'm not sure if it's software issue or not, but randomly my mic just stops working and it seems this problem started happening only in last year. I saw other people on reddit with similar issue even in newer generations.
      - Battery obviously doesn't last as long as it used to.
Unfortunately, couple of weeks ago my A50 fell off from my desk and the cushion thingie on the headband (the replacable one) broke. So I had to "solder" the plastic back together. I know I could get a mod kit for replacement, but it's difficult in my country and takes a lot of time to get these. Finally decided it's time for an upgrade. I'd love to wait for gen 5, but I guess I'll just yolo gen 4, although it's a bit old by today's standards. I wish it was cheaper for how old it is.

    • @Aliseah
      @Aliseah 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@creative0ne I also got my Gen 2s in 2015 and still use them to this day, even more so since the pandemic and working from home, I'm ending up wearing them almost all day every day, especially when I end up playing after I finish work. Also no wear and tear on the headband on mine either.
The charging feature of my dock broke within the first couple of years, due to the magnets just not connecting properly - but the battery on them was fine enough to last me through the day and I'd just charge them with the USB overnight. Now, the battery definitely doesn't last a full day of work and gaming straight after, but they still do last a good 8/9 hours before I have to plug them in to charge.
My mic also stops working too, or won't pick up random words in the middle of my sentences, and I'm starting to think this headset has definitely run its course. But I think I'll also have to yolo gen 4 - I've loved my A50s for so long that I'll take the risk for 4th gen as I doubt my current headset will last until whenever gen 5 comes.

    • @creative0ne
      @creative0ne 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Aliseah hey! Glad to see that someone shares similar experience with me. Although I think the version with charging dock (where you could place the headset on the dock to charge) was Gen 3, not 2. Gen 2 is the older one, where you had to plug the cable to charge.
I got myself Gen 4 btw and I love it so far. After wearing my old Gen 2 headset for such a long time I even forgot how soft cushions were.
I definitely love their upgrade on software/firmware part. Gen 2 didn't have any software for it. With Gen 4 we can control a bunch of stuff, EQ is pretty nice, being able to get rid of mic monitor is also really good, I hated that on Gen 2.
Also finally volume in Windows works as expected. For some reason with Gen 2 it never worked for me when I changed volume with media keys. It was always 100%. Now it is working properly.
I like that while charging in the dock headset is muted. Gen 2 was basically always on 24/7 while charging.
Gen 2 had that timeout where they would automatically turn off to save battery if nothing played through it. I don't know if Gen 4 has this, but it never happened to me yet, for whatever reason, not sure why. I think there is some sensor which detects if someone is wearing headset, because when I put headset on my desk (not on the dock) and come back - I can see on the dock that it's off, but as soon as I simply put it on, it gets enabled. Maybe I'm tripping, but if it works like I think it does - it's pretty convenient.
Only thing I don't like so far, is that sometimes while listening to music I can hear very short pause in sound. It just goes silent for 300-500ms like headset is losing signal. Same effect happens when you try to move out of range and they start losing signal for real. This happens very rarely, but when I listen to music it's a bit annoying and ruins the impression of having such expensive new headset, especially when Gen 2 never had such issue...
Other than that I'm happy. Except for the fact that I had to upgrade now, before Gen 5.

i bought this headset about 9 months ago, after watching your review and i love it
its worth every cent imo, the only downside for me is that the wireless range could be better, but maybe the trouble might be caused by the positionioning of the base station
that has been the third time i bought a piece you recommended on your vids, and i never have been disappointed
( although i must considder that the Asus Strix true sourround headset didnt last as as long as it should. i ripped off the cabels cause i forgot that this was wired and stood up from my PC chair ) but still the Strix took about 8 to 10 strokes and i was able to fix it with duck tape to make it last another 3 months till full breakdown

I have the Astro a50 Gen 4 for about 6 months now, its the best i have had so far. i have had a Turtle beach, Logitech g933, Rog Centurion and a Rog Strix Fusion 500. i used these for gaming. the Astro A50 i use for pretty much everything, they are extremely comfortable and the sound is amazing. while the ROG headsets aren't cheap both of them broke down within the warranty period. i also have a pair of Skullcandy Crusher's for use with my phone.
So if you decide to buy a pair, i highly recommend them because as far as gaming headsets go these are probably on of the best available for that price. of course audiophile headsets are better but mostly also more expensive.

Provoked Prawn ~ You said if we had questions or comments to post them and you'd respond...so here's hoping you read this and respond!
I have loved the A50's since I got them for my Xbox One X. When I upgraded to the Series X, MS sadly got rid of the Opt/Out TosLink connection on the console. Astro said, "We've made a change to enable these to work via USB - you won't be disappointed!" Ugh. Sadly they are useless to me now. The audio is NOTHING like it used to be via TosLink.
Thoughts on how to circumvent this without buying a different headset altogether? I thought about running fiber from the base to my receiver and then HDMI back to the console, but I wasn't sure if that would pass the audio through correctly or not. Looking for options...

I personally use these headsets for about 6 months, they are very comfortable to wear for long hours, sometimes I even forget to take them off. I love the wireless connection it's great and the battery charges quickly. But if you go deeper, I would personally go for the best sound quality and a good microphone + the option to choose between wired or wireless connection. My previous headsets were the Asus centurion 7.1, which wasn't as comfortable to wear over long sessions, but the microphone sound and software were much better than on Astro A50.

This issue I have, at least on the PC side of things is that the Dolby button is basically pointless now. They're essentially forcing you to use Dolby Atmos if you want any kind of surround sound. It's a shame because on the previous models, the Dolby drivers built in with use of the Dolby button would give a very wide soundstage and ridiculous surround sound. Without the Dolby button and through the use of Atmos it's a more tighter, closer sound and not so much a stage or atmosphere. Now there is a way to "fix" that, and that's through optical cord using Dolby Live through your motherboard or sound card. The problem with that is that headset will randomly disconnect and require the power being cycled to work again. It's odd to me that no one is talking about this.

    • @TheOptimus212

I had the OG or maybe the Gen 2 A50 years ago. Can't remember anymore. The battery in it became useless after a couple years. I eventually pulled the thing to pieces and soldered on a massive rechargeable battery which I zip tied to the top of the headband. It meant the thing lasted about a week of constantly playing music but it was ugly as hell. I also couldn't shake the feeling I had a cheap Chinese lithium battery sitting right on top of my head. Kept thinking it would go into full nuclear meltdown and deposit lithium right into my brain So I eventually just binned them. the feature on the side to hear less or more of your friends is perfect for those clutch moments when all your noob friends or teamates died( but are still screaming in the mic, telling you to do this or that back seat driving) just mute them real quick and go clutch. had the astro a40's over 13 years ago and got 10th pretisge in call of duty modern warfare (released nov11.) 10th prietisge by nov 25. all gold guns unlocked by dec 15... by tthe xmas rolled around all the 1 one noobs came on and my kda went from 3 to 10... the headset was so fkn broken back then when no1 used headsets on consoles with the optical cable so over powered and broken. quit the game by the newyear went to halo to get 50 in everything on that afterwards caause cod is for 10year olds just play tarkov a real game.(this headset on tarkov is overpowered but just turn off surround sound unlesss your listening to music or a movie. The MIC is also garbage just saying....

3.5mm or optical connect to base station if you want another audio source. But if you mean for charging, then yes, you can plug in a micro USB and still use them

I’ve had these for around 9 months and I’ve had slot of issues with them
The head band pops out a lot
The head band doesn’t stay straight on my head and twists a lot
And recently they fully died and wouldn’t charge or turn on

@@TheProvokedPrawn that's what I'm hoping because it is a very comfortable headset, I'm just waiting on Astro support now.
