We laugh at YT lessons, but in the 1960's at a major university I took a full-semester course in music theory (classes, homework, exams), and they didn't cover half of what Ms. Terzian covers in a few minutes. And frankly, she covers it better.

As I have been teaching myself to play piano, I had a lightbulb moment about musical structures, and that is the fact that "intervals" are the KEY to music. In this video, you mapped out the interval structures of these chords, and showed how they can be applied to any number of different keys. It is these 'distance relationships" so to speak that are the underlying structures that cause our brain to identify these sounds and their associated feelings. I like to re-visit your videos because I find that as I progress along this path, I notice things I hadn't noticed before. Nicely done!

love how you go into such thorough detail for the formulas, i never knew about the major, minor, minor major construction. my favorite 7th chord is, too hard to choose. but without E7#9 we wouldn't have purple haze ! thanks again for making chord theory enjoyable

I recognize that you are a great teacher. But I maybe I am not a great student. In any case I thought that playing Happy Birthday or Jingle Bells would be less complicated. But i have to admit that your way of explaining the whole musical theory is the best way. I’m sure I would gladly pay for a manual in pdf that explains these concepts to complement what you have done here in your TH-cam channel. Thanks a lot. Impressive!

Ms Gracie, what and how you are teaching is amazingly helpful to someone like myself who plays all these scales and chords, but has really only understood what i was doing "by ear", and not theory. You are able to break down the "wall of intimidation" when it comes to music theory for ear players. I for one am extremely thankful for your efforts and willingness to share your knowledge in such an accessible way.

    • @GracieTerzian

Thank you so much, Josh! If you can play things by ear, that is wonderful because that means you have a true and deep sense of musicality inside of you. That’s the most important thing, and it can be hard to teach. Theory helps us understand, refine, and bring ideas into what we’re playing. Theory is also fun once it’s broken down in a way that makes sense. I think it truly takes years and years of reiteration before a lot of it really sinks in (it certainly did for me), but once you do begin to grasp it, it’s really so fun and magical. Thank you very much for your nice comment - it really means a lot to read. I’m so glad I’ve helped break down the wall of intimidation for you, and I hope you continue to enjoy this musical journey we are all on :).

@@GracieTerzian Just can't express my thanks well enough for the time and effort you make to share this. I am sure following your recommendation of reiteration, it will become sort of second nature. I think of "musicality" as the language of music, but i was lacking the "grammar" of music, this understanding of what makes it musical. Ultimately, i just want to be able to express what i hear internally, which hopefully goes to the soul. Thanks so much.

You are a wonderful instructer! I've played guitar for about 12 years (simply never practiced enough), but recently took up piano (which I love and have no problem practicing 7-10 hours per week). I have a foundational knowledge of music theory, which I picked up when I was playing guitar. When I started playing piano though, music theory can to life in my mind and suddenly started to make sense. Anyhow, I eventually stumbled upon your channel and find myself tuning in often. You, and others on TH-cam, have become part of my journey. Thank you for sharing your knowledge in an enjoyable fashion!

Your lessons are so great!! I’ve been a self taught musician for many years. I wanted to learn the reasons (ie - theory) for the things I’ve learned from intuition. These video lessons get right down to the points I’m interested in. I’m already finding new insights to break out of some ruts. Lovin it! Thanks Gracie!!

While trying to identify the note of chords on the guitar I still have to go back to visualizing the keyboard to do it. I see why my mother gave me piano lessons for a couple of my childhood years. The keyboard is still in my head 60 years later.
