I think people need to realize that if you only wanna be a TH-camr bc of money/easy job it will never work out. Creative stuff you kind of have to be super passionate about bc if all you think about it making money rather than trying to make your content like actually good and stuff it's probably gonna fail unless your like Mr. Beast lmao. You can never really go into TH-cam with the mindset of it being your future job. I guess some people do get really lucky. I used to wanna do TH-cam bc I thought playing games = money sounded great, but I never did much bc I wasn't actually like passionate about it. This is why so many people feel like youtube just isn't that great anymore. It's just filled with soulless influencers who only care about the money aspect and little kids don't really understand that. I don't think there's anything wrong with kids wanting to be influencers considering it isn't all too different from kids wanting to be pop stars or some other celebrity type career.

in that case may i recommend looking at the voice actors for Danganronpa XD (bryce papenbrook, keith silverstein, cristina v, kira buckland, carrie kerane, grant george, erin fitzgerald, and a lot more lol)
I'm kinda tired of how common the Disney-esque character designs with the giant eyeballs are becoming. I know it's for doll purposes but it's to the point where I really can't distinguish these shows anymore. They're starting to look so uniform.
That movie was my childhood, but I find some things in the film to be interesting, like how the antagonist Eris was named after the Goddess of Discord of the same name from Greek Mythology. She’s even voiced by Kathleen Barr, who I recognize for her portrayals of Misako in LEGO Ninjago and Dot Matrix in ReBoot.
The models are fine, it's mostly the lighting that is subpar, but that's quite common for serialized animation. The only series I've seen break that mold is Trollhunters, but that was supposed to be a movie when it started (not to mention the quality drop in the rest of the anthology)

This just made me realize that if mermaids were real and they wanted to claim all humans were pirates, then we could just fire back with, "okay, then you're all sirens."
Idk I think its a stretch to call it a Pirates of the Caribbean refrence when Calypso and Barbarossa are two of the main things historically associated with the ocean in Italy... But oh well.
yeah, I think that part was an issue stemming from Italy's cultural landscape not being taken into consideration because the standard for a lot of pop culture tends to be either generic or american-centric since a lot of the most popular show are made in the US or Canada
I'm not Italian but I've heard about them as mythology in Calypso's case or as a historical figure in Barbarossa's case. I thought they are pretty popular outside of Pirates of the Caribbean? Maybe it's an Europe thing though.
Just thought I’d let you know, us mer performers prefer fancy headwear to tridents, things in your hands make it harder to manoeuvre. We only really hold items if we do photoshoots, a performance or casual swim isn’t where we’d bring the trident.
I'm happy you talked about that influencer problem. It's the same thing with pro gamers it's a drive or dedication or time not everyone has and that's fine. My problem is the entertainment machines has always sold the glitz and glamour of a non 9-5 but people need to understand how much life is different between entertainment and 9-5. Because we have similar struggles but still different in so many ways
Not me seeing “Mermaid Magic” in the thumbnail and immediately doing a double take because I thought they made a show based on the “Mermaid Magic Fizz Surprise” toys I was obsessed with growing up 😭
10:12 Why are you surprised? How is this girl any different from Aisha in Winx Club? She’s always angry and aggressive. And the one time that you see black love in Winx, the one time that a character needs to die, they kill off the ONE BLACK GUY. And remember the episode with the Afro? Does it surprise you that the same people who Ok-ed those ideas would once again push such racist ideas about black people?
You can clearly tell how much they borrowed from season 5 of Winx club with this show. Magic trident,The trash monsters, the monsters being cause by earths polluted oceans, magic portals under the ocean, island of garbage, the girl with the black hair sounding way too much like Diaspro in that season…gee do the selkies exist in this universe?
The whole making the only black character aggressive thing was already lowkey racist...and then making her turn into a monster at tne end?? 💀 that is...uncomfortable, to say the least
@@Èèĕě-m1f Stereotypes have no reason to exist at all. Just because one group of people act a certain way, dosen't mean it is justification to assume and be prejudice to everyone else. We may have the same skin color, but we are not the same individually. Every Black person is their own person and we should be treated as such. Being constantly protrayed in the media as aggressive, angry, and masculine is a stereotype that has been happening for years, and it's tiring. I would love to see more black girl characters who have other traits like shy, weird, cute, or smart, instead of being just tough and angry.
@@Èèĕě-m1f It’s one thing to be angry when the story calls for it, it’s another thing to have “being angry” as a whole character trait. Being lazy is also a normal human function, but if you for example have a Hispanic character and their whole deal is being lazy, that is considered stereotyping and low-key racist.
For a moment I thought her mom was actually the sea witch, now that would be interesting to me! Also why is her name Merlinda. That's like a person being called Humanda or something.
I see your point and it is quite funny how mermaid have sea theme names, but we humans also have names that work like that, Andrew means "man", Donna means "woman", a lot of name mean mean man+something or woman+something, it's just we are acostume to hear them or the root is in another language.
@@mariatorres-by6du True, in german the last or sometimes first names are smth like Hermann/Herrman/Herrmann etc. And translated it literally just means "Mister Man"😭
Herman actually doesnt mean mr man. Its from Heer (army. Which is actually pronounced pretty much like Herr) and andreas means "manly" not just man. Etymologically they make sense. But yeah it would be weird in the respective languages because in german "Herr" also means sir or lord and is used as an honorific (so if your surname is Herr then you would be Herr Herr). Names that mean like nice person, smart person, person who does stuff are very normal, so whos to say mermaids cant have names like that. But then there are names like Adam. Thats literally what the word for human in the bible is. Hito is another name that means person. However japanese names function differently (a name has no meaning on its own) and its the kanji that determines the meaning so you can be called Hito and it means nice or warrior, but if wrriten as 人 that just means person
I did find it pretty charming though, atleast a good foundation for future mermaid adventures. Something I have always enjoyed with winx was the combination of magic and tech and I could see shades of that as well here with giving the two siblings these cool jetskis and diving gear so they could go along on underwater stuff. (I think my favorite episode actually is the one where they mostly spend it underwater with that guardian octopus)
Yep, it's pretty solid despite its flaws and inconsistencies. It was much better than what I was expecting from a kids show (mostly cuz I had low expectations). The character design for Merlinda is rlly unique, I love her hair! I didn't really have a problem with Nerissa being the stereotypical "aggressive/athletic black girl/character with electric powers" mostly because I've never encountered that trope much (aside from Lolirock) and that's due to me not being American (I'm a black African, so I never felt the need to feel represented). The social media aspect was a little weird, but it's whatever. The miraculous ladybug voice actors gave me a good laugh tho 😂 Otherwise, I'm glad this show exists! We need more girl-orientated shows for young girls to enjoy these days!

Keith Silverstein is in this show! I must watch. He is the best VA of all time. “Osmathus wine tastes the same as I remember. But where are those who share the memories?”
Fun fact! I took an entire class about the history of piracy in mostly the western world in the golden age of piracy and my prof got a guy to talk about his research. The guy apparently helped out with pirates of the Caribbean! although they obv didn't take his advise to heart to be historically accurate ;;. if you want any resources about historical piracy: Villains of All Nations is the book we used written by the guy who helped out with potc.
I really appreciate your rant about influencers. We shouldn't be encouraging kids to want to become influencers, especially because they can end up exposing themselves to the internet without understanding what they're doing and end up doxxing themselves or suffering from fame they have no control over, and that can damage their psyche in the long run and affect their mental growth! Thank you for giving a realistic take on the subject, I will direct this video to people who think being an influencer is no work and all glory.
Omg I love the pause on Bryce Papenbrook. I used to follow this VA around and he legit makes his way into everything. When that character spoke I just KNEW it was Papenbrook
Pirates of the Caribbean deep dive in the future sounds neat. The only pirates of Caribbean media I consumed were the worlds in Kingdom Hearts 2 and 3.
I understand that, but currently I were thinking and (idk if it is true and I'm too lazy rn to research) but I have a feeling they are inputting more social media and what's viral there in the cartoons and other pieces, because that's what currently trending and what can be more used to trigger emotions and relationships with some determined audience, who has a chance to be large.
I feel so called at because I actually enjoyed this show a lot, way more than Winx season 5. I agree with some of the problems but I also think it really did a better job and was way more stable and kind of mature when compared to kid shows nowadays. It really felt like the villian was threatning and the plot made sense. My cousins who are both 11 ate this show and like it a lot too 😭😭
From my perspective, I think they keeping making the black girl character strong-willed/no-nonsense to not offend black people watching at home. They didn't want to make them dumb or loud-sassy because those have been percieved as harmful stereotypes. What would've been creative was putting a spin on those stereotypes like making them slow in a funny way like Pinkie or sassy in a prissy way like Rarity. Even switching Nerissa and Sasha's personalities would've been much better.
The quality of the animation is actually really good. I love how the show looks, except for their faces looking again like general pixar faces. Gosh jolly would be fun to have some facial diversity sometimes in 3D animation. Oh well :) Still pretty and stylish.
Why is there a seal in a swimming pool!? If they are talking about animal conservation, i hope they clarified that it was a salt water pool. We have enough problems with people thinking you can put fish/sea life in chlorine pools
I know someone who does mermaiding. They had to take a certification course to show that they could actually swim in that tail and hold their breath. That way when they do shows the people running it know they won't just drown in front of everyone.
Hi Negative Legend! :D I wanted to share my thoughts because I feel like this video missed the mark in capturing the essence of Mermaid Magic. I think this show is easily the most cohesive project Rainbow has released in years--and honestly, I’d even go as far as to say it’s one of the strongest entries in its genre. It feels like it pulls inspiration from so many beloved predecessors, whether it’s Winx, She-Ra (one of the showrunners wrote for this one!), Barbie, The Little Mermaid, Sailor Moon, LoliRock, etc. That said, I feel like this video didn't quite lean into the show's fantastical elements as much as it could have. I feel like this left little room to really appreciate the heart of the narrative Rainbow was trying to convey. The storyboarding and cinematography in Mermaid Magic are next-level for a 3D animated show--especially considering it was storyboarded by the same team behind an episode of Love, Death + Robots. It’s so rare to see a TV series (especially one in the mermaid niche of animation) take this level of care with its visuals, especially the dynamic camera work during the action scenes. Among the sea of modern 3D shows that often feel formulaic or network-driven for merchandising with very little serialization (Miraculous, for example), Mermaid Magic really stands out for embracing its own narrative and cinematic identity. I wanted to highlight a few moments to give you a better sense of why I feel this way--and why I think it deserves a second look! 7:07 "Big city" Quick note: Morton Bay is based on Moreton Bay in Australia! A fun little detail that adds to the world-building. 7:52 "Apparently Merlinda can heal sea creatures, which is never used again except for this one time." This isn’t entirely true--she literally saved the dying mama whale! That moment was so heartfelt, especially as it tied to Merlinda’s own loss of her mother. It’s a touching example of the show’s emotional depth, which many shows don’t even attempt like this. 11:07 I actually found the environmental message sweet and endearing--it was direct, but also rooted in a kind of assertive kindness. The importance of these messages being delivered directly is crucial because it connects viewers to the reality of their impact on the environment which should be told rather directly. I’m curious how this came across as “a soap box” to you, especially because later on, you mentioned wanting more direct explanation for the training exercises (which I’ll touch on further down). This might’ve been more of a disconnect in perspective than a flaw in the material itself. 12:05 The tunnels and river under the school… it’s fantasy! Hidden underground infrastructure is a common rumor and even reality of the real world. This felt exciting and imaginative to me, especially the connection to the underground waterway. 16:50 NOOOO! You skipped over one of the best moments?! I thought that fight was incredible! I loved how Barbarossa’s comment about Merlinda’s mom was diabolical and unforgiving. Also, the choreography--especially the water and land combat mixture was pretty visually striking. Definitely worth a re-watch imo. 21:16 "Just ripping cool sounding stuff from Kung Fu movies." Not at all! This is one of those moments where the show rewards close attention. Each training exercise builds specific skills, and those techniques are later incorporated into the fights--especially in the finale. It’s all visually conveyed in such a deliberate, thoughtful way (see the next one) 22:10 "We’re not sure." The montage subtly illustrates each skill Merlinda develops--it’s rewarding to notice how these connect later in the series during the finale fight. Each scene highlights Merlinda honing a distinct skill, whether it’s balance, agility, reflexes, etc. The show leans heavily into “show, don’t tell,” which I personally love--it trusts its audience has the intelligence to piece things together without spoon-feeding every detail (which helps avoid things sounding and feeling reeeeeaaaally stupid). Honestly, it feels like we watched two completely different shows but I'm aware it's just that people watch things differently. That said, I’m pretty well versed in Rainbow's stories, and there’s a specific magic Mermaid Magic and their other stories capture that I still feel like you haven’t fully experienced yet (but I hope you will someday!). The aspects I found meaningful and beautiful didn’t seem to come through here but I feel like if you give it another look. Only thing I can say is try going in with an open mind to the narrative, the fantasy, and the sheer fun of it all and of course the emotional moments. Instead of focusing on flaws tied to personal preferences, see if you can immerse yourself in the experience Rainbow is offering--the very real and impactful ideas they’re exploring through a fantasy lens. It’s such a beautiful story when you connect with its intention and you recognize the work put into everything that drives the story, especially the moments charged with emotion. Also, please, take another look at the cinematography--it’s rare to see a TV series use animation so thoughtfully, and it adds so much value to this story. Would love to hear your thoughts if you decide to revisit it! 😊I really think this show accomplished in 10 episodes what Nickelodeon couldn’t do for Winx in a multi-season run. All the best to you!
Wow impressive and I agree with a lot of what u said cuz no offense but the negative legend basically did an overview a summery and that's it like not actually an indepth analysis I did a video on it too about mermaid magic check it out if enjoy the show
0:57 though I do understand the point that you're trying to make, but at the end of the day traditional jobs will still be a whole LOT harder than being an influencer, and that's why so many people want to try it specially young kids, and the market is so overly saturated right now. Whenever I hear people say this Mikayla Nogueira immediately comes to mind lol.
@@-bloom-9267 i have worked in retail… and I am studying to become a teacher… so no, i don‘t think I am underestimating how easy something is… maybe our priorities are just different? With a regular office job, you go home and you have time off… that is just not a thing as an influencer… depending on your size, you are in danger of getting recognised on the street and therefore everything you do becomes about your brand. Then before that comes the amount of hours you spent editing and creating content, because you need to create enough content, having to constantly self organise yourself and get into how to run a business… that is just a huge amount of different skills that you need to learn before you are big enough to be able to outsource those steps… and that (in addition to other things, because the list is endless, really) makes it a harder job, imo.

So I watched the first few minutes of the first episode a while back, and it was honestly underwhelming. However, I do wanna say that I actually own a few of those mermaid tails! They’re so cool, and the monofin makes you zoom so fast through the water! Mermaiding is so much fun, if you can afford a fin and tail and are even a little interested I’d definitely recommend trying it out! (Do remember to be safe though, learn how to take off the fin before going in the water so if something goes wrong you can free yourself quickly, learn to use the fin without the tail before using the tail, and try to always swim with a buddy nearby just in case!)

Honestly, I hate the hypocrisy the main 3 have towards the humans. Like they walk on land like 90% of their lives and constantly criticize the kids who have done nothing but help them. Like if all humans are pirates, then all mermaids are sirens, but the girls never apologize or get called out. It drove me nuts! 🤨😑😮💨
Also the black character having lighting powers is also a trope
It justs a point where it’s just stereotypical
I'm happy you talked about that influencer problem. It's the same thing with pro gamers it's a drive or dedication or time not everyone has and that's fine.
@@Èèĕě-m1fit's not that the emotion is a stereotype, it's the fact that emotion has been overused as character traits for black female characters.
Manny
Barbie gave us Merliah so I'd say it's fair game. It sounds enough like a normal name that I'm down to let it slide
The miraculous ladybug voice actors gave me a good laugh tho 😂

We shouldn't be encouraging kids to want to become influencers, especially because they can end up exposing themselves to the internet without understanding what they're doing and end up doxxing themselves or suffering from fame they have no control over, and that can damage their psyche in the long run and affect their mental growth!

When can people make cartoons that DOESN'T involved social media? 😭

Hi Negative Legend! :D
I wanted to share my thoughts because I feel like this video missed the mark in capturing the essence of Mermaid Magic.
7:07
"Big city"
Quick note: Morton Bay is based on Moreton Bay in Australia! A fun little detail that adds to the world-building.
7:52
"Apparently Merlinda can heal sea creatures, which is never used again except for this one time."
This isn’t entirely true--she literally saved the dying mama whale! That moment was so heartfelt, especially as it tied to Merlinda’s own loss of her mother. It’s a touching example of the show’s emotional depth, which many shows don’t even attempt like this.
11:07
I actually found the environmental message sweet and endearing--it was direct, but also rooted in a kind of assertive kindness.
12:05
The tunnels and river under the school… it’s fantasy! Hidden underground infrastructure is a common rumor and even reality of the real world. This felt exciting and imaginative to me, especially the connection to the underground waterway.
16:50
NOOOO!
21:16
"Just ripping cool sounding stuff from Kung Fu movies."
Not at all! This is one of those moments where the show rewards close attention. Each training exercise builds specific skills, and those techniques are later incorporated into the fights--especially in the finale. It’s all visually conveyed in such a deliberate, thoughtful way (see the next one)
22:10
"We’re not sure."
The montage subtly illustrates each skill Merlinda develops--it’s rewarding to notice how these connect later in the series during the finale fight.

@rebekkapr7726 No, it actually is easier than for example working in customer service, office job, medical field, manual labor, etc.

A decent monofin is $50, there are more expensive hobbies.

Been watching you since your Force of Will days. Can confirm it was a wild ride.
Am I the only one who's tired of shows focusing more on conveying an overstated message than telling a good story? I can't name any off the top of my head, but there are so many shows that could've become something souch better than what they were if they focused more on the storytelling than appealing to an audience while also treating them like they need to be handheld the whole way through. To me, Mermaid Magic is no exception.
