Kalevi Kiviniemi plays Widor's "Toccata" at St.Ouen, Rouen, France

  • Happy Birthday, Cavaillé-Coll Organ at Saint-Ouen, Rouen, France! Kalevi Kiviniemi joins the party and plays Toccata (from 5th Symphony) by Charles-Marie Widor. On 17 April 1890, Widor himself played this piece as the last one in organ's inauguration recital.
    We decided to put this video online on the very same day to celebrate this magnifient organ, cathedral and its stained glass paintings, architecture and acoustics. Video was recorded in 2008 during the recording sessions of Kiviniemi's "Cavaille-Coll" -CD/Super Audio CD (OrganERA vol.14, FUGA-9282, www.fuga.fi). As far as we know, this is the only video of Widor's Toccata, from Saint-Ouen, that is recorded and filmed live in professional quality.
    Organ in Saint-Ouen is one of those rare instruments from a French organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, that are remained untouched to our days, no alterations has been made. Many organ freaks also know this organ from its very loud reed stop, Bombarde 32, in Pedal, generating 16 Hz tones at its lowest. It sounds like a four-motor WWII bomber flies over! Still it blends perfectly with other stops. In video, there are some shots of Bombarde pipes behind the organ. They do not look special, but - listen...
    This video was specially made and prepared for TH-cam. Audio was taken from high quality multi channel recording setup, not from video camera's built-in microphone. The better your computer's audio system and especially the speakers and the subwoofer are, the better is the sound. Video was filmed in full HD, please enjoy the better picture quality that it offers (720p, 1080p). In 720p and 1080p versions also audio quality is better.
    We really hope that you enjoy this special anniversary video!
    Video, audio, editing and description by Mika Koivusalo.

    This is my favourite performance of this piece. Here the composition, the instrument, the location and the performer, all sublime on their own, come together to form or rather reflect something where the sum is greater than its parts. This is conveyd beautifully by the video and its editing. This is a glimpse Beyond. Rest in peace, maestro!

    32 foot Bombardes are usually laid flat due to lack of space in the organ chamber. Ive walked among them wearing ear defenders when the organ is being played at full power. The sheer power of the pedal bass nearly crushes your chest. Its awesome

    L'abbatiale Saint Ouen tient chez moi une place importante.
    Elève au lycée Corneille voisin, j'y ai fait ma communion solennelle.
    Puis je me suis initié à la musique et la spiritualité par les concerts gratuits qui étaient donnés le dimanche après-midi sur le Cavaillé-Coll.
    Etudiant, j'ai appris son histoire en prenant des cours d'histoire de l'art et de l'architecture pour être guide conférencier de la Caisse Nationale des Monuments historiques. J'aimais la présenter aux touristes français et étrangers.
    Merci de cet enregistrement exceptionnel. Je me réjouis qu'il touche autant de mélomanes et participe au rayonnement de l'abbatiale

    • @mikhail2406able
      @mikhail2406able 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@geuros the physics of it would start to cancel out some of the harmonics so it wouldn't sound as good or monstrous as the 32 itself on one note that allow all the harmonics including the fifth in it to speak naturally interrupted.

    • @geuros
      @geuros 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mikhail2406able interesting, I know that with 16' for example, it sounds like 32' imitation, there are organs where 32' stop is even done by activating 16'+10 2/3' stops (which is equivalent to playing fifth on 16' alone I guess), but it doesn't sound like true 32'. Hence I don't know what the effect would be on 32', if it would emulate 64' or rather cancel itself. But you're probably right as I'm definitely not the first one to think about it and it's just not being used, for a reason probably.

    oh God, I want those rich deep bass pipe to move my soul! I'm wonderfully graced to play the Pipe organ at my local Mormon church, it could be a little bit more, but its such an exquisite experience even now at this time.

    Bravo Maestro Kiviniemi! Neat that Widor played the same piece on the same organ. In 2000, I had opportunity to play the organ at the Riga Dom, which Franz Liszt composed the music for the dedication of that organ when it was newly installed.

    You don´t see many Finnish people here. But when you do see and hear them.
    They are always brilliant.
    Kiitos, Kalevi Kiviniemi, meinasi henki lähtä kun katsoin ja kuuntelin.

    Widor and Cavaillé-Coll probably have embraced each other in tears after Widor played this at the inauguration of this amazing organ.

    found this scrolling Utube. big fan of mighty Organ works. But The Widors Toccato piece, has always been my favourite. But with this you have the added bonus of the inside a magnificent French Cathedral, and the ominous skill of the Organist, With out music sheets. I learnt Brass instruments, and was in a band back when younger. But never mastered the piano keys. truly a joy to watch such a master work his skills by foot and hand. gorgeous.😁

    That is a number one Bucket List stop in my extreme elder years of 80+. Listeing to that will open up a staircase to heaven just for me----and a few others.

    Thanks for the detailed explanation regarding the organ's history and of this great performance by Kalevi Kiviniemi. - A pleasure to listen to such a wonderful performance, and also thanks to the great composer Charles-Marie Widor. A fine performance in filming and taking the sound, all well done, sheer delight!
