I saw a historical quilt that was made by "church ladies" during the Depression using what they had. They had newspaper pages! You can still use that - just make sure that the paper is old. Older ink cures and doesn't come off on the fabric. The "church ladies" left the paper on the back so now it shows the news of the day.
What a great way to use up all those strips. String quilts!!

My mother and grandmother made me a string quilt top using the scraps from the clothes I sewed for my kids, mixed with scraps from their sewing. It is very bright and random. They used cloth foundation squares to make it more secure, as grandma was in her 80's at the time. It has become this issue of overthinking for me, keeping me from actually quilting it up! I finally got started on the pillow shams. This has been in my sew room for at least ten years! 😳 with mixed color ways it really doesn't look good with any binding I have tried. Finally, thank you Jenny, I watched a video on self binding, and that is what I am going to do. These are a great way to memorialize scraps.

Our Guild used this method to make quilts for charity/disaster relief and we used telephone book pages, so smaller blocks. The strips were of varied sizes and a very wide variety of prints and colors including some holiday and baby prints right in with everything else. Black sashing and borders tied it all together. Thanks so much for all the tutorials.

    Hi Jenny,
In 1992 I made a quilt like that I still have it it was my first one and I had never quilted before. My dog sleeps on it on my bed every night. I made it on muslin but the papers are so much better.Richt now I am doing a scrap quilt on old phonebook papers.
Love scrap piecing but I will order the papers for sure.
Thanks so much for showing this to us.
    Happy scrapping,

I finished 16 blocks today (40" x 40" baby or lap quilt) and took off the paper. When I went to piece them together, I realized that I couldn't NEST the seams unless I repressed every other block in the opposite direction. What a job but worth it.

I made this quilt using one jelly roll plus the white strip going through the center. I was able to easily get 30 squares, which made a very nice lap quilt. The hard part was getting the white strip in the exact center of the paper. If you are off by even a little, then the other strips will not line up. Otherwise, it is a fun quilt to make.

#414justzoot - Just last month I made a string quilt in my brothers memory with a lot of varying colours but each scrap strip wasn't always the same width as the others, the quilt turned out lovely and I feel the strips don't have to line up.. I believe the secret is anything goes when using scraps.. Don't put pressure on yourself any quilt is unique and beautiful in itself.....

Chorus Quilters had their very first "sew-in" today. We cut 2 1/2 " strips from boxes of donated fabric and started sewing them to 10" layer cake paper squares to be cut and later assembled. We have laughed and plotted and can't wait to meet again. We look forward to posting our "lap quilts" on-line and of course giving them away.

I put patterns etc in the “presentation books” with bound in plastic sleeves you get at office supply stores. They often have thin ‘newsprint’ sheets of paper in the sleeves. I have collected a pile of those papers, thinking that someday I would get into paper piecing. Cut down to 8.5” blocks, I’m ready to begin whittling away at my scrap pile 😀

I have done strip/scrap/andd crazy quilts using this method for years. But I just buy a bolt of cheap muslin when its on sale...cut off a few yards, wash and dry it and then I cut it up into 10-15 inch squares and start sewing! Put a warm flannel or fleece backing on it and it will make a warm and snuggly winter quilt! Next time I am going to try it with the QAYG method that was recommended previously. Great idea!

That's the same principle as the vintage "row by row" quilt! I had been trying to understand it because some people are doing it with different colors of Minkee. I could never afford that, but I could sure do this! Thanks for the tutorial!

Another great tutorial. I'm going to have to get some of those papers. I really like the added interest/pattern you achieved by keeping the middle strip consistent. And, since you mentioned sewing 2 together and then cutting into half-square triangles, it would be lots of fun to see what kinds of patterns can be created by again keeping the center strip consistent and doing the triangles and then playing with the patterns. And, of course, you wouldn't be limited to strips. Thanks!

You can also do this on your embroidery machine, using a light weight stabilizer, instead of paper. It is really cool because you piece the block right in the hoop.

petmom I would love to know how you do that. Do you then leave the stabiliser in place or tear it off ? Xx

I have a pale green batiste that I ripped in 4 " strips. Periodically I take scraps and sew various size and shape scraps onto the strip which will eventually go together for a quilt of many memories.
