Love this quilt design. My father, who is an artist, told me a long time ago to always add white or black, if you have a lot of color. This helps your eyes rest.
My grandmother would make string blocks and had a bushel basket full of them at all times. She always left the paper on until it was time to sew them together that way they didn't stretch out of shape. Some of those blocks might not make it into a quilt for years but with the paper they didn't even need to be pressed, they were ready to go! String quilts are so fun to make and a great way to use up our bits and scraps.
My husband died a year ago on February 7, 2020. What with the lock downs of businesses and such, I still have all his clothes. I have been toying with the idea of creating a Memory Quilt of his shirts, slacks and ties. This quilt idea plus the Solar Flare idea would give a quilt an Xs and Os vibe, which would reflect the love we had for each other.
Thank you so much Jenny & Misty. That quilt is really really stunning and gorgeous and it looks 3D. I really really love 💕 all the possibilities this strip quilting has. That block you put with the white solid, made a whole new block!!!!!!! absolutely adorable xxx Mags
I'm so excited about the string quilt..!!...I'm in Ontario and you have basically taught me all I know ...even being a new quilter, I have never felt intimidated...you have a great way of explaining everything step by step....thank you so much
Hello Jinny and Misty . You make things look so easy. You have helped me so much this past year. I lost my husband a year ago and I was lost and did not know which way to turn. Just wanted to let you know you are truly a Blessing.
I've watched this vid a number of times, and it never gets old. String quilts are so much fun to make! And, as we all know, quilters spend a lot of $$$ on fabric. Make your scraps work for you, and you don't have to start with a ten inch foundation paper square. Make them any size you want. They don't have to be masterpieces; they make great utility quilts. I've got a TON of scraps; time for me to get busy. MSQC ROCKS! ❤
I love this "live" session, even though I watched it later. Thanks for "going mobile" and showing us a close-up, so I could see that even the white "centre" lines don't always match up exactly. From far away, they look like they match. "Get your nose out of your quilt" is always a good motto. It's gorgeous the improv way that it is... and that's what we want for our quilts! (although if you want it to really match at the white centres/corners, you can fold and press the initial white strip in half lengthwise, and ensure the fold line is right in the corner of the paper). Thanks MSQC team for a great video tutorial !! ~Diana from Toronto
Hi there in Missouri. Jenny you are just one great teacher This string quilt video has given me 3 new quilt Ideas. I must say that since you first started these tutorials you have become a very happy chappy you seem to get as much enjoyment from them as we all do watching them.
You probably dont give a shit but does anybody know of a trick to log back into an instagram account? I was stupid forgot my password. I would love any assistance you can offer me
@Byron Benicio i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I love this method. I have always wondered about what the best paper would be. When ever I have a question about how to do a quilt this is my go to site. I love you all and Jenny is awesome and thank goodness she figures out how to make it easy. My grandmother taught me how to do cross stitch embroidery quilts but I taught my self how to do piece quilting.
I love this video! The learning about quilting is great, but hearing about the children, grands, in-laws...getting to know your team has been a beautiful bonus!
Glad I found this older video making the string quilt. Earlier tonight I watched a video of Jenny quilting in her RV. This finished quilt was on the bed. Looked fabulous. Great job.🇦🇺👍
Jenny! I love watching you and learning from you! One day I decided to make a baby quilt and watched your how to make a baby quilt videos which I believe there were four and I made my first quilt. You make me happy!
You know, Jenny, I have seen this quilt so many times made of such beautiful material, but I have never liked it until now and its because you put the WHITE between the squares. That makes all of the difference in the world. I have wanted to make the blocks but refused to put in the work on something I wouldnt like and now you have made it possible! Thank you and your lovely designing mind!
So happy to have this one!! I just discovered string quilting!! I'm glad you showed the one with all the colors because I don't have enough of a stash to make one with all the same colors.
I wrote pattern instructions for Simplicity many moons ago., I worked with Marjorie Puckett on several string quilting patterns. You’re bringing back pleasant memories. Thanks.
This will have to be one of my favorites ... especially the ending where you show the different patterns that can be made with these blocks. Also, I saw where the question was ask about using the same center strip, but never heard a clear answer ... If you use the same center strip, that is what makes your squares, 'larger outlined squares' and puts them 'on point'. As always, you two make a great pair ... loved this tutorial!
I have watched so many tutorials and other things that I feel like Jenny and I are old friends. We stopped in Hamilton last year (were from Oregon) in January and did the whole MSQC experience in the cold...but Jenny was not there😕. Big disappointment. But I left a nice pile of money there, went to all the shops, and hubby had long naps in the hubby shop. I would love to go to one of Jenny’s retreats. Such a wonderful family. Thanks for all you give!
I'm so glad that you use the center white strip to separate the patterns formed by the blocks. I've seen so many scrap quilts that have no unifying pattern to them and each separate block ends up disappearing into a mish-mash of color which to me is visually confusing. My first reaction on seeing the quilt was that you had done the colored squares and then sashed the blocks in white which I really liked. Then I realized that it was a center stripe of white coming together at the corners to form the dividing frame work. So much easier to construct that way. Thanks so for the idea.
I made this pattern with fall colors and use white for the middle and I love it. Also made it with blues, I love the results. So happy with it, and as a new quilter you have become my greatest teachers. Thank you, awesome tutorials.
The very first quilt i made was a strong quilt. I use news paper for the foundation. I was a dress maker and all the scraps i had were polyester. That was in the 70's and that quilt is still in use. It is indestructible!
Watching from Ontario Canada. Absolutely awesome. I have learned soooooo much from your shows. I get excited when your emails pop up. Thank you so much. Stay safe and well.
I stay stitch round the edge within the seam allowance before removing the papers. This means that the bias isn’t an issue when handling the blocks. Good call about using a unifying strip down the middle.
after sometime i watch your video. I enjoyed your new creation and your nice sweet personality with smiling face. May god bless you for make us our lives enjoyable with your teaching
Jenny and Misti, when I was about 12 or14 years old I helped my paternal grandmother make a string quilt, I’m 72 now. We cut 6” squares from the newspaper and that was our foundation. I still have some of those. Also,a few years later while messing with her sewing things I discovered some childrens dress and bodice paper patterns on newspaper dated December 26,1944.I can only imagine that my grandmother had been gifted some fabric and since it was the day after Christmas she decided to make a dress or jumper with it 40:19 and freehandedly cut her pattern from this paper. Thank you for letting me share.
Watched this today...I'm interesting in making string quilts/quilt blocks and this was so helpful. I like the center strip idea...and ideas on using the blocks and liked the baby quilt shown at the end
I just realized I was actually watching a quilt tutorial. A QUILT tutorial. And I'm not mad. The fact I clicked onto it is so... Seriously? I came here from an; 'Eazy fabric rug' tutorial, but I'm not sure how I got there.🤔 I've really loved quilts for yrs, but I wasn't really interested in making own untill maybe 2 yrs.ago. I'm now itching to make 1. It's super intimidating, though. It seems like a virtual impossibility, imo. While watching the rug tutorial it came to me all @ once; 'OMG! I know how they make quilts!' So now, I'm borrowing all the quilt tips & tricks I can fit in my small, thick brain! Thx! Your lovely quilts are giving me igreat nspiration.♥️
Jenny just love the time you give us all. I've made so many of your quilt patterns that I'm hooked on being in my sewing room. Thank you for incouragement
I’ve made several of these quilts. I had (and still have) a lot of flannel fabric leftover from several animal shaped rag quilts for children. My sisters, niece and I make a shopping trip every year to (usually Pennsylvania, which is a few hours from home) just do a girls trip. A couple years ago I made each lady a string quilt. I found a panel that showed four ladies with shopping bags, which I put in the middle of the quilt. For my niece’s quilt I appliquéd a dog in the middle that looked like a dog she loved and that had passed. These were so fun!
Watching your tutorials from England. New to quilting and have learnt so much from watching you. Have used tumble dryer sheets instead of tissue paper. Almost the size that I want. Love watching you both
This looks like a great quilt for a beginner quilter. I have a lot of strips that I mismeasured for a fence rail. So now I know what I can use those strips for
I love the center white strip. I look for very cheap, thin, muslin or any light colored thin fabric to sew my strips on top. I usually buy it by the bolt. I call this my no brain sewing.
Hello from Albuquerque, I LOVE string quilting, I use all my scraps for them and I also have very slim strips sewn together to make larger pieces of fabric to make blocks with later. Some are just any colors, some are color co-ordinated,
I love this quilt and method. I made a baby quilt , it took me awhile but I love, love this pattern. Thank you so very much for sharing. Very informative.
Love string quilts. I use a fabric square as a backing. Done 10" with wide strips and 5 1/2 using 3/-1" strips. The white strip down the center is a great tip and completely changes the look.
FYI......We NEVER get tired of watching Jenny brainstorm!! 😘💜💜
I like you two working together with your son in the background! It's so lively!! Family time!!
Love this quilt design. My father, who is an artist, told me a long time ago to always add white or black, if you have a lot of color. This helps your eyes rest.

I was a single mom of 4 - our motto (back in the 80’s) was eat it up, wear it out - make it do or go without. My children recited it all the time. 😉
Rte
I want to copy this. We did all this, but didnt have the mantra.

I used a square of muslin for my foundation.
Love string quilts. I use a fabric square as a backing. Done 10" with wide strips and 5 1/2 using 3/-1" strips. The white strip down the center is a great tip and completely changes the look.
