      Hey, sorry late reply but Alien is really kind of an H. P. Lovecraft adaptation. Not a direct one, of course, but nonetheless if you're familiar with his works you'll see that the writers of Alien heavily borrowed from / generally adapted his themes and settings. I'm only mentioning this to point out that Alien is easily the best of its genre, but not the creator of it by a long shot.

    • @a.s.raiyan2003-4
      @a.s.raiyan2003-4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@googlegoblin3482 Here's the problem with your statement. Lovecraft did not coin the fear of the unknown trope. It was done well before that. Lovecraft just gets all the credits for it. HR Giger has more influence over Alien than Lovecraft. Go read the Wikipedia article. Now. Alien created the Sci fi Survival Horror genre. So yes it is its own genre.

    • @googlegoblin3482

      @@a.s.raiyan2003-4 It's not just the fear of the unknown. Cosmic horror, isolation, ancient secrets, body horror, cosmic indifference. These are all very Lovecraftian themes. H R Giger is the artist who designed the alien which he derived from his series of paintings about similar subjects. I am aware of who he is and his contribution to Alien I'm afraid.

    The term "retroactively generic" is one that can be used towards a lot of classic media. Tolkien's work has been done and redone to death, and I really feel like it's had a bigger impact on gaming, given that most of the examples of games Alien/s influenced were shooters, not games as a whole. It's not so much the pacing or visual elements, but the entire worlds and basic concepts that Tolkien should be credited for, and I'm saying this as someone who actually doesn't enjoy his works on a personal level, simply because by the time I was cognizant enough to enjoy his media, I'd already devoured it in plenty of other forms that it was already overdone and I'd never even heard of Lord of the Rings.

    • @W1ndF4lc0n
      @W1ndF4lc0n 9 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I would say not Tolkien, but Dungeons and Dragons.
      I mean for anyone familiar with Tolkien they will notice that everything in his writing plays a lot differently than what we are used to in fantasy books and games today (today as in the last 20+ years), it's just the surface elements in them were taken and popularized by DnD.
      And DnD universes go a lot differently in their world building, which is what we have seen done and redone almost to death.

    • @ZerogunRivale

      Wind Falcon Well said, Falcon. I think it was Roger Ebert who pointed out that the original LotR novels were more about the character development of the hobbits whereas the LotR movies became full on sword and sorcery movies. I think the same could be said for what has happened in gaming (and movies). There are a lot of things that look Tokien-esque, but in the end are actually more like D&D.

    • @jgunner280
      @jgunner280 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think its a matter of sci-fi vs fantasy here. Both areas influenced a huge amount of their genre for all media, not just games (though it happened a lot with games). That also means that while aliens mostly did influence shootery games, similar can be said with tolkein and RPGs. Though as someone else sort of brought up, there's also things like D&D, and then I have to wonder if some of the things we think aliens did was really brought from aliens or something else kind of copying aliens. Take Halo for example, that spawned some copies and strong influence, but was obviously taking notes from aliens itself.

      Actually there are a lot of Alien/s influences everywhere, tabletop Warhammer 40k and later Starcraft (which was originally a Warhammer 40k game) have Tyranids/Zerg's, which are heavily based on Xenomorphs, a lot of the universe's atmopshere is drawn from Alien/s - before Alien/s, future was great, even if there was war, it was generally much cooler than the 1970s. But with Alien/s, it made you thankful you were in the present, since the future was even more decrepid, fucked up, and as a bonus you had aliens out to kill you in weird ways.
      Then you also had the aesthetic from the movies copied to death in many piece of media, for example Command And Conquer Tiberium Sun, where practically half the GDI equipment is ripped straight from Aliens.
      Basically I'd say Alien/s is to Sci-Fi what D&D is to Fantasy, to a degree it is genesis of the modern style.

    When you were listing off all those games that take after Alien I remembered Prey. That game, especially near the start, really nails its tone. Looks like it was taken straight out of Alien too. Very dark and scary. Grimy, quasi-retro-futuristic technology, slimy monsters with lots of teeth, and a sense of terror and being in a completely alien and hostile environment. Then you hear the jukebox echoing through the hallways, playing Don't Fear The Reaper. Damn, that game has an awesome intro. Really deserves more recognition than it gets. It's almost Bioshock-esque.

Tyrant is correct, Dead Space is an excellent Alien experience.

    I know that Isolation has its flaws, but it still is one of the best games I played last year. The unscripted tension and fear I felt during certain segments of that game are unparalleled. The fact that the game also manages to be the best adaptation of Ridley Scott's science fiction aesthetic is just a bonus.
    But hey. I find Aliens to be its predecessor's equal. Both are magnificent films with great visual effects, set pieces, and Sigourney Weaver acting her ass off.
    I heard that Aliens Infestation is a good adaption of James Cameron's movie, but I still hope to one day see the ultimate realization of Aliens in video game form. First person shooters don't have the be dumb or lazy.

      I get that, but there are a lot of factors in my saying that. I do not mean that I like Alien better than it's sequel, but that I think that Alien is a tighter production and a film with covered it's ass a little better.
      I'm not saying it's a bad movie. I understand that Scott and Cameron are very different film makers, but I feel that Alien commits to fewer cliches and goes about portraying it's themes better as well.
      My one big bias in this case is I like the era of film making that Alien comes from more than Aliens. The 80s produced some kick ass action films, horror movies, as well as a spattering of headier films. The films that stick around from the 70s are ones which focus on detail and minutia, and it's something I really appreciate as a viewer. I'm cool with turn my brain off action, but it's not the thing that sticks with me.

      ***** Well I never found Aliens "creepy", but Aliens has way more style. Aliens feels like an extension of the first and calling either one "better" is just too silly to be valid. If anything the first one seemed a tad cringy at times and looks like 2001 A Space Odyssey got really horny in its sexual symbolism. Aliens takes aspects of the first but cranks it way up in its scale and production values which is to be expected from a sequel.

I'm not trying to say Aliens is better then Alien by any means though, because I personally think its not (Though I'm certain its better in some aspects). Aliens took the formula of Alien and approached it differently and as most argue, better. Aliens is a great movie, and a outstanding SEQUEL.

    About the Neversleep pills:
    It makes perfect sense, in the context of the Alien universe.
    You wake up from hypersleep and you do your work. You sleep, because that's natural, but then you go into hypersleep for a long time anyway when you travel somewere else in the galaxy.
    So it makes sense you'd try to maximize the waking hours inbetween hypersleep cycles.
    Additionally - rich people, would perhaps have a part of their brain rewired in one of those surgical machines, so that their bodies wouldn't want to sleep ever(and so they wouldn't need to take any pills)
    I think this plays even more into the bizzare part of the universe of Alien, when you think about it.

    I, personally, prefer Aliens over Alien for the following reason:
    The main thing that holds a film like Alien back is the fact that it's a horror film. And horror films tend to suffer one problem unique (for the most part) to the genre. It's only going to be able to pull off all of its tricks once.
    Let's be honest, you become significantly less scared of something that you know is coming. Where less action scenes take longer to get tired of. Over used maybe but never boring.

    I really wish we could find an equilibrium between the fast paced action and slow subtle horror. Like mixing the first and second Alien movies together for a game that would appeal to both demographics. Like, you can still shoot and kill the xenos, but their movement and when they appear is unpredictable, and you have to constantly watch your back, your corners and the vents if you even want to make it to the next area. Like, if the Xenos are wounded, they will re-enter the vents and re-plan their attack, still keeping you on your toes, not come at you like a dumb missile. They will be swift and cunning, and constantly trying to surround you. I think AVP 2010 had a good idea of how the aliens behave. Rather than running at you full speed, they jump on the walls and try to surround you. Sometimes they were too fast for you to get a good shot. A game like that would also be realistic. No crosshairs, only free aim and HUD is minimal. Only showing health and how many magazines you have. And think of the adrenaline rush you get, after all the time dodging and sneaking around the aliens, watching every corner and every nook and cranny, when you finally get the smartgun and you feel like you could take on the entire hive.

      just make it have metroid upgrades. you could be like a soldier in the military, or some ripley relative with a group of soldiers accompanying you, and you get attacked and lose your stuff/squad. then you have to wander an unknown environment, picking up various weapons along the way, with the enemies slowly getting stronger. start off with eggs and facehuggers, maybe even an aggresive surrounding environment like metroid. the alien changes based off of the prey it impregantes right, so for more powerful enemies they could have predator aliens or something. then at the end, you fight a queen of course, and have an escape sequence at the same time. If you want a game that you describe, Metroid Fusion comes pretty close, but it's 2D.

  • @TheSimianDeity
    @TheSimianDeity 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    For all SBH tries to simply label them "The Good One" and "The Bad One", it's really not that simple.
    Alien is a great horror film. It uses tension and moving goalposts to great effect. But making a sequel to a film like that is not as easy as just repeating the formula (which is admittedly the most common route in Hollywood and why most sequels are garbage). The tension is gone. It took an elaborate setup to create the circumstance in which the protagonist was isolated from help and outmatched. Recreating those elements would ring false. Indeed, later (post-Aliens) Alien films cling closer to the original aesthetic, but never manage to recapture the magic.
    So Aliens did something different. They took the intriguing sci-fi world Alien built and used it to make a war movie - one squad alone behind enemy lines and all that. And for all that they kill dozens of aliens in the movie *the aliens never stop being frightening*. Cameron does a masterful job of balancing the threat of the aliens against the agency of the protagonists. There are no easy encounters with the aliens. Every goal they accomplish is paid for with the lives of the slowly dwindling squad. And through this mechanic, Cameron establishes tension as effectively as Scott did.
    So you end up not with "The Good One" and "The Bad One" but two different takes on the same premise; two different dishes made from the same ingredients. They're both excellent, and while you might have a taste for one or the other the real achievement is that both films work as well as they do while being so fundamentally different.
    So why do games draw inspiration from the second film rather than the first one? Why did it take so long for someone to "get Alien right"? Because games rely on interaction to drive the experience forward, and interaction is better suited to the war movie than the horror movie. Because you can't recapture the experience of ignorance: we know what the alien is and how it works. Because even when you copy Alien as closely as you can, the horror experience overstays its welcome for many people after a few hours, and most gamers demand a 10+ hour experience for their dollar.
    And the funny thing is that for all that games have drawn inspiration from Aliens over the years, not a single one has ever managed to succeed. This might be in large part due to the common misconceptions about the film. Aliens was never a movie about mowing down aliens. It was never an action power fantasy. It was a grim, psychological war movie where death seemed inevitable. And no matter how many times the protagonists escaped, no matter how many enemies they killed, death was always waiting for them, growing closer. It took their friends one by one, until there was no one left but Ripley. In the end, she had no choice but to confront her nightmare alone.
    I'm not saying that you couldn't make a game like that. I'm saying no one has ever really tried.

    Every survival horror game needs that unkillable enemy that chases you and forces you to waste your ammo or run.
    Best part of Deadspace 1 and 2 was the Uubermorph that couldn't be killed through conventional means.
    Having an enemy like that puts the 'survival' into 'survival-horror'. That and very limited/costly ammunition.
    The unique part of Alien Isolation was that this unkillable monster, which could only be dissuaded from chasing you for a short time, was the focal point, rather than the monotony-breaking exception.

    Interesting critique. I felt your point about video games copying alien was a little off. We stand on the shoulders of giants, all ideas come from something before it, and although its a good point that alien brought a lot to the table, it is now part of the norm. As the were things that would of inspired alien to be like it is. Ideas are not unique and isolated. They are inspired and connected. :-)

      I find the second movie to be incredibly tense. Yes, the Colonial Marines are better equipped to defend themselves than the Nostromo crew, but the Aliens are similarly scaled up to match them, and just like in the first movie, once the Aliens show up, there is never a moment that accompanied by the ever-present threat that the monsters could be hiding around any corner and that there is no safe haven to be found.

    "HELP" I have had brain troubles trying to remember the names of the most awesome nostalgic arcade machines from the late 80s/early 90s ! So far I got the names of some of the lost gems . One was " Cadash" another was " psychic 5 " And the other was " Sky adventure " , But I still can not rest ! I use to play this alien shooter which was a top to bottom scroller. All I can remember is that it was a complete rip off from the alien franchise but had real cool audio and game play .
    You could go 2 player on it and the character was a generic looking marine and you had a flame thrower . Help ! I have hunted every where and cant locate it . It had similar graphic textures to truxton .

    Just watched this video and it's funny, since it's the Halloween season and I'm a HUGE fan of the Alien movies, I decided to watch the first Alien movie again and got to thinking about how influential the franchise was myself, particularly in relation to Metroid, of which I am also a major fan of. Although I did realize how many video games seemed to take their cue from the franchise, especially Aliens, I thought it was an excellent point, noting how 'video-gamey' Aliens was. I never really looked at it that way. I do like to draw comparisons between Metroid and Alien, of which we all know the comparisons are certainly there already, but it's totally a sort of proto-'video game' movie that relies on the same sort of tropes that a lot of games would later follow. That's a pretty good way of putting it.
    I actually still need to play Alien: Isolation and meant to play through it this year for Halloween. Maybe next year. Shame it didn't sell well enough to get a sequel though.

    It's not just the influence of the film Alien, more importantly it's the influence of the otherworldly designs of H.R. Giger and his unique (or rather his strangely disturbed) mind. Without Gigers monster designs it would have not been half as influencial as it is.
    For me there hasn't been such a distinct, weird and charismatic monster in any film before or after in terms of looks. Though the film has added a very important layer to it: the Aliens ruthless intelligence and personality.
    Only the Predator design comes close if it's about distinctness, but that is still too humaniod.

There is definitely something to be said to unleash fresh and creative experiences that don't rely on fight-or-flight reactive violence as dominant or exclusive mode of interaction

    I got Isolation when it first came out, and I still haven't gotten around to finishing it just because of how well they nailed the setting. I honestly get terrified when I see that Xenomorph. The androids, while not as scary, are unsettling, and they kill me multiple times before I figure out how to get past them. When the game was first announced, they said you wouldn't be able to just fight in every situation. First chance I got, I tried it out. Saw a group of androids, and tried to pick a fight with them. I killed one, maybe two of them, before dying. This game has shown that if I was in this real situation, I would die, quickly.
