Call me a DMC nerd or whatever, but "Tony Redgrave" has been Dante's alias for pretty much all of time ever since DMC1 I think. It was also his actual, non-placeholder name before the devs came up with Dante.
I actually really enjoyed the RE books as a kid! When I told my friend about Jill becoming a master thief he didn't believe me. I have to him this video!
Holy shit, I am a big fan of you. I didnt knew you also watch super bunnyhop. Also, I am realising just now that I stumbled upon a 3 year old comment on a 3 year old video. What am I even doing here?
I would pay to see Andrzej Sapkowsky´s face the moment you show one of his books as novelization of the game... If it was a joke on your part, yo... nailed. Really really loved the video too.
He also sold the rights to the games for pretty cheap because he thought a Witcher game would never sell so now he's a bitter dumb old man filled with regret
I mean, he's in love with himself, but it comes from being revered as a saint in Poland for years before the games were even conceptualized. Definitely the most known Polish fantasy author, and one of the first, actually (fantasy was kind of frowned upon, sci fi was more prevalent in these years, everyone probably heard of Stanislaw Lem). And he did something pretty original, instead of bringing over the Tolkienesque tropes he created these characters, and used slavic myths... He sure is a bitter old man, and narcissistic, but I wouldn't call him dumb.
Well... He old and a bit close minded but he's book are good and went become one of most beloved RPG game of all time, don't let's his opinon get you .Actually i kinda feel bad for him since he always try to keep his opinon for himself, is just everybody alway ask him about video games in every fucking interview.
The creepiest thing is I can imagine a line like this somehow getting into MGS2, and Raiden, right after the ndelivery of the line, saying "Poisonous stings held high in the sting position?!?!"
Your kid will soon undergo the transformation into a George, but don't worry, you may still be able to save him. You must preform an exorcism. First find a bowl of noodles and some chopsticks and begin waving them up and down, while doing so burn a pair of George socks and sing the Snake Eater theme backwards, only then can you unsubscribe from SuperBunnyHop and save your kid.
Im sorry to tell you the harsh truth about this behaviour he got bited by a Were-George. This is a truly uncommon monster which you can only find at places where nudles flying and mgs3 theme songs get karaoked... there is no cure. Just make sure he has a nice time before the transformation is finish.
Im quite not sure about a cure, but my grandfather told me a legend. He said that if your son wear George socks (at least 3 pair at once), while watching a commercial of death stranded also while gargle sneak eater backwards (with the snake eater background chore of course) he maybe cure .... but who i am to believe this garbled legends....
Hum I'm not sure. All I know is that Dante has a long history of also being known as Tony Redgrave. It does sound like something I've read before, but I don't want to give a definitive answer.
IIRC the anime mentioned that his mother made him use the name so that demons were less likely to hunt them down. One of the episodes involved him revisiting his childhood friend. It also explored his code of honor from the book a little.
Tony Redgrave is Dante's "civilian name". It's the fake name he uses for the normal everyday stuff. If I remenber right this was also in the official manga, so it's not like they took it from the novels.
Honestly, I figured he'd go for an arguably better Minecraft book, such as 'Cubeworld' by Karl Olsberg and 'The Elementia Chronicles' trilogy by Sean Fay Wolfe. Whilst these are hardly classic works of literature, they blow the vast majority of minecraft fanfictions out of the water by comparison!
Enzo's had a small part in Devil May Cry ever since the first game where he wrote a character reference for Dante in the manual. Enzo's also in the Devil May Cry 3 manga, but Kamiya wasn't involved in that. In The Eyes of Bayonetta art book, Dante and Enzo are playing strip poker together in The Gates of Hell.
Watcher O'Brien The halo books were really truly good. I read the entire series before playing the games and I remember them being able to be held up on their own.
Eric Nylund had such a deliberate and enjoyable style to his Halo books that made it really hard to enjoy a lot of the ones that came after. Reach was a masterpiece, First Strike was some impressive stuff, and Ghosts of Onyx was a bit convoluted by the end, but still really gripping and a great addition to the series. Karen Traviss was not a capable writer to offload that story arc onto.
The Worlds of Power series by F.X. Nine were an absolutely storming read. I couldn't get enough of that shit when I was a kid. Every time we had a "book day" at school where you order through those kids literature catalogues I'd tear through looking for a new one. I had Blaster Master, Metal Gear and Ninja Gaiden. I must have read each of them 10 times at least. I've always regretted giving them away, but then something tells me they wouldn't hold up. Still, I loved the references to individual sections of the games, like going into detail about Snake wrapping cloth around his knuckles so that he could "rabbit punch" his way through a crack in the wall.
Nice try George, there's no way the first Game Novels video came out 3 years ago, that would be ridiculous. (looks at date) Oh my god what am I doing with my life?
So, I read all of the Perry Verse. My brother kinda broke down when this video started and I went: Oh, I read that, and that and that... All of that. Minor freak out in between where he took a moment to breath, we resumed watching this and I took a long walk down memory lane. I got my hands on those books back in 2007/2008. I was hype on the resident evil bandwagon and ended up watching a lot of Shadowleggy videos and resident evil playthroughs for all the games I knew I would never play because of the consoles and lack of $ I have fond memories of those books. Mostly for how bizarre they were. It was like reading fanfiction, but with a stamp that said "legal bruh". I always thought that S.D. Perry had a real problem in the definition of bad guys. I mean, Nikolai, Wesker and Chief Irons (for what I can remember, correct me if I'm wrong), end up having a moment of "enlightment" when they are about to die in which they want to explain themselves to the female character there (It's always a female, at least for what I can recall). That always pissed me off a bit, because it completely deconstructed the characters we knew. Almost as if the author couldn't accept that some people are simply assholes and evil. I always got the impression that the author thought the bad guys had some deep rooted unresolved mummy issues. That's the only way I can describe the thought patterns they followed there. Overall, the books are enjoyable. Cringy at some points, but so morbidly fun that you can't help but read. Or at least, if you are a Hardcore resident evil fan, you'll either rage or enjoy it as a bizarre take on the games.
They sound like the kinda awful but still stupidly fun resident evil movies tbh. I also quite liked that little lockpicking irony with jill - its more elaboration than the games ever tried to give. Even if kinda dumb and corny - its still somewhat fun and cute lol.
I remember reading them online around the same time you did and even though they were a litte.. weird, I still enjoyed being able to read about RE in an expository way the games couldn't provide. It makes me SO happy knowing I'm not the only one that was so into them way back when
I made an active decision to comment before watching to say I do remember the first book games video and I remember you making me come to the realization of the less "story" pre written the better adaptations handle so thanks for that and stoked to see you doing another one of these :D
I picked up the Umbrella Conspiracy on a whim today before remembering that it was covered in this video all those years ago! Hearing what you had to say here makes me excited to read it.
I never realized how badly I wanted a continuation to your first book video. If you could do one of these every two months, I'd be the happiest person on earth.
...Should I be ashamed to say that I'm not only was aware of Resident Evil books, but also have read them? At least up until Veronica? Same with Devil May Cry? -and that I've also researched DMC and Bayonetta conneection in depth because yay WMGs?- Am I too far gone?
Thank you for doing this again. It's wonderful work. For the inevitable third installment in this most enligthening of series, this one hopes for Perfect Dark: Initial Vector (written by Greg Rucka).
I read a bunch of the Resident Evil novels when I was around 14, traveling through South Africa with my family, in a cramped car across miles upon miles dry grassland. I remember really enjoying them at the time and have felt guilty about it ever since. But now that you're admitting to being entertained by S. D. Perry's RE novels, I feel now is the time for me to come out of the closet on it too. Thank you George
DMC uber-fan here: Enzo appears in early concept art for DMC1, and again in the manga's first volume. The whole noir feel was because of it's origins as an attempt at making Resident Evil 4. Tony Redgrave was one of Spencer's twin sons (the other being called Paul) and was enhanced with nano-machines, giving him the kind of superpowers Wesker would end up with. Spencer was supposed to be hundreds of years old, evidently an alchemist who discovered prehistoric bodies under his castle which contained an early T-Virus. Relatively little actually changed in the end product really; just replace "mutants" with "demons" and there you go. The novel is a mish-mash of ideas from the prototype Resi 4 script and the final DMC1 script. Likewise, the novelization of DMC4 does the same; taking plot points from the much larger original script and trying to make it somehow fit with the final game. There's a little nod to Dante's original name in the games; the sides of his guns have "for Tony Redgrave" carved on the side, and Arkham surprises him by knowing his real name at the start of DMC3. So the implication is that "Tony Redgrave" is an alias in the final game's canon. /nerd
I can recommend the two Elder Scrolls novels, The Infernal City, and its sequel, Lord of souls. It seems like a bit of a mixed bag about who likes it based on some reviews ive reed but i liked them. Some sentences can be a bit wierd if you don't know that much about the gods and stuff like that from the lore, but i still recommend looking them up.
He said hello and welcome! :D I've missed George's hello and welcomes since the TOVG Podcast ended. I read the whole series of those Resident Evil books when I was younger. I enjoyed them.
+Super Bunnyhop I'm growing up´with your videos and i think i might become a Game Designer, thanks to yours videos and the reviews and videos of others i learned a lot about the videogame industry. Your work is great and you shouldn't be ashamed of talking about games and explaining what you think of them.
Thanks for giving a heads up of where to find audio versions of World of Power books . I´ve never read them so this seems like a great opportunity to immerse myself in this strange but wonderful form of literature
i owned a number of these books shown in this specific video. I had The Umbrella Conspiracy, the Devil May Cry novel (by Tokyo Pop), as well as one of the Halo books and one of the Splinter Cell novels you mentioned in this video's predecessor. I loved these Game Novels videos, its fun to go back and acknowledge how awful this stuff was. It was actually a real treat to watch you go into depth about these trite books I read 15 years ago as a dumb kid. And holy shit--the connection between Bayonetta and the DMC book turned out to be insane.
I read the resident evil novels before playing the games, and I gotta say it's really interesting to have some kind of foresight to some situations while being surprised by some moments purposely left out
The Umbrella Conspiracy! Yes! I loved that book when I was younger! Definitely well worn from many reads. I did read the Devil May Cry book as well, but I don't remember it at all. The author of the Metal Gear Solid book, Raymond Benson, was a substitute english teacher at my high school. Very nice guy.
After you said 4(3) years since you made the original game novels, it felt weird. I’ve been subscribed since before that, but it doesn’t feel like it’s been that long.
Heh, that font on the upper left side of the Devil May Cry book. That's "Treacherous Curves", also used on certain Pathfinder (the pen & paper roleplaying game) material, like the character sheets, together with its sibling "Treacherous Corners".
Based on what Super Bunnyhop was critical of from the novel Metal Gear Solid by Raymond Benson from the last video on game novels, perhaps he would enjoy the novelization of Metal Gear Solid 4 - Guns of the Patriots by Project Itoh, which actually makes a whole new perspective of the story from the eyes of Solid Snake's closest friend, Otacon, thus giving tons of new creative information about a story we may already know very well. It also helps that it's not just copying the script and making minor edits here and there like Raymond Benson did with his MGS and MGS2 novelizations.
Man that part about the characters in the DMC book being in Bayonetta, that kinda blew my mind. It may or may not be true, but it does seem likely. Even the way they described Enzo "Pig of a man" seems likely to be the same in the game as well. And I did hear something about a DMC/Bayo cross over. What a world. Man. Now THERE is some nice trivia. Plus Kamiya did oversee the original writing so I mean... it's possible.
I grew up with a couple of those "World of Power" novels by F. X. Nine. I still have the Castlevania II and Blaster Master books lying around somewhere. The Castlevania one was actually pretty creepy, from what I recall.
When I was younger I used to like fan fiction a lot. And it is amazing to see that the ideas that George have in this video and the previous are so similar to the ones I had about fan fiction back in the days. 80% of fan fiction is crap, so in order to find the hidden gems I made up 3 rules. 1: Fans should not be allowed to write fan fiction! Dont! Because they have no distance to the characters and are to absorbed in their favourite things that they cant see the flaws and cant change things. The best stories are written by people who like the source, but think that they can do better. Series with more fervent fans tend to to see those fans attack fan writers who do unorthodox thing with the characters they love. Causing a toxic community. 2: Simpler source materials make for better fan fictions. There is a reason why Doom was Georges favourite book in the previous video. The more complicated a story is, the harder it is to change it. A simple story can get complexity added to it by the fan writer, but a complicated story cant lose complexity without creating plot holes. And this will tie the fan writers hands and either force him to mimic the original plot closely. Or, like the Devil May care book, place it somewhere else where it barely even meets the original story. It will strangle creativity. But there is no such problem with Doom that almost lacked a story to begin with. 3: A story to base a fan fic of should be character driven, not story driven. Good characters are building blocks that you can use and order in any way you like. But a good story will lose out if you change it.
So glad you made a sequel. The original of this is one of my favourite videos of yours. You should look up the UK Sonic the Hedgehog novels from the 90s they're amazing. awful, but amazing. The writer goes full 90's x-treme tude and has a weird obsession with Sonic's metabolism.
I recommend Eric Nylund's Halo books if you are going to do another one of this video. Fall of Reach feels like Starship Trooper set in the Halo universe and it's actually great. The first three Splinter Cell novels are neat too.
Sequel to game novels, glad to see! I can't watch some of your videos because I am way too scared of spoilers for games that I might want to play but haven't yet (such as all the mgs vids)
"with its stinger held high in the sting position, preparing to sting..." and floating noodles is why I subbed to George.
Call me a DMC nerd or whatever, but "Tony Redgrave" has been Dante's alias for pretty much all of time ever since DMC1 I think. It was also his actual, non-placeholder name before the devs came up with Dante.
It would seem Devil May Cry 5 actually made much of the novel canon to the games.
I actually really enjoyed the RE books as a kid! When I told my friend about Jill becoming a master thief he didn't believe me. I have to him this video!

"poisonous stings held high in the sting position" amazing
Lol the funniest thing i have heard today :)
Tactical stings with nanomachines.
If you think that's good, you HAVE to read the Ninja Gaiden book in the same series. Blaster Master, too. Those books were god damn amazing.
The creepiest thing is I can imagine a line like this somehow getting into MGS2, and Raiden, right after the ndelivery of the line, saying "Poisonous stings held high in the sting position?!?!"

I would patreon if that was a goal lol

Featuring Tony from the Devil May Cry Series
"Tony Redgrave" is an alias used by Dante in his early days of demon slaying.
TWC Wasent it also his original name back when Devil May Cry 1 was Resi 4?
Hum I'm not sure. All I know is that Dante has a long history of also being known as Tony Redgrave. It does sound like something I've read before, but I don't want to give a definitive answer.

Tony Redgrave is Dante's "civilian name". It's the fake name he uses for the normal everyday stuff. If I remenber right this was also in the official manga, so it's not like they took it from the novels.
According to Itsuno, they are taking original expanded universe stuff and making them canon. One of which is the Goldstiens
Wait!
Max Brooks is writing a minecraft book?! The World War Z guy?!
That's a terrible thing but an awesome match
To be fair, Minecraft does feature zombies.
I may be a Boo can't wait for George rr Martin to make a roblox book
Apparently, he's the son of Mel Brooks, too.
I... never knew that until today...
Can't wait for John Green's BMX XXX
I can't wait for all the politics and morally grey themes.

Terry Potter Oh yeah, I had forgotten she worked on that book! Incredible how she made a career out of fanfiction.
is love to see your take on the STALKER and Metro novels, maybe even Roadside Picnic.
All right Superbunny Hop video right on time for once, and it's one that I asked for a sequel for three years! THREE YEARS! But cool happening today.

Oh my god, it's been three years? I thought it was only, like... a few months ago.
My life...

or maybe we knew somehow
Well he did say that he was going to put this video out on a podcast a month ago.
Holy canolies!
The old game novel video is four years old now?!
Tony Redgrave was what Dante was going to be called back when it was Resident Evil 4, it's written on his guns
Bob Loblaw That's also the name he tells his customers I think.
It's nice to see videos on novels. Feels like there's a large untapped source of potential for TH-cam channels to cover literature.
I made an active decision to comment before watching to say I do remember the first book games video and I remember you making me come to the realization of the less "story" pre written the better adaptations handle so thanks for that and stoked to see you doing another one of these :D
George, no one grows up thinking plaid is cool... except the kind of people who sell socks on the internet.
YEEEEEEEEES! Game Novels, is one of my personal favorite videos from you.
I can't believe I've been subbed to you for so long that I remember seeing the first video in my sub box.

Just listened to the final TOVG Pod cast! I'm pumped to seee what other projects you have lined up!

Pretty sure Enzo was in DMC1's instruction manual first, with the one in bayo being a reference to it

Tony was the name of the main character back when DMC was RE4. This book has layers.

Some sentences can be a bit wierd if you don't know that much about the gods and stuff like that from the lore, but i still recommend looking them up.
We really need more of these books on your channel.
that brings me back! (like two weeks ago when I started watching all the videos on this channel in chronological order because it's something I do)
Oh wow, that dramatic reading audiobook.
Thank you.
The first Game Novels video is one of my all-time favourites.
Nice video mate. I clicked on it just on an off chance and really enjoyed it; keep up the good work
He said hello and welcome!
And holy shit--the connection between Bayonetta and the DMC book turned out to be insane.
i just watched your old game book video... didnt think id see a return to it.
Was waiting for the poisonous stings quote.. thanks for delivering.
I read the resident evil novels before playing the games, and I gotta say it's really interesting to have some kind of foresight to some situations while being surprised by some moments purposely left out
Book master race.
Soft-cover peasants...
Hard-cover master race.
Review the StarCraft books please!
Thanks for this, Dad.
I love these cancerous inside jokes.
S.D. Perry is godlike, I loved the books and still have all the OG covers.
YES I've missed this series so much.
Can't wait for the finale of this thrilling series
Based on what Super Bunnyhop was critical of from the novel Metal Gear Solid by Raymond Benson from the last video on game novels, perhaps he would enjoy the novelization of Metal Gear Solid 4 - Guns of the Patriots by Project Itoh, which actually makes a whole new perspective of the story from the eyes of Solid Snake's closest friend, Otacon, thus giving tons of new creative information about a story we may already know very well. It also helps that it's not just copying the script and making minor edits here and there like Raymond Benson did with his MGS and MGS2 novelizations.
Been looking forward to this since the first one
That Minecraft book for what it is actually sounds nice, like a well written kids show
Man that part about the characters in the DMC book being in Bayonetta, that kinda blew my mind.
I would love to see a third video of this series.
I grew up with a couple of those "World of Power" novels by F. X. Nine. I still have the Castlevania II and Blaster Master books lying around somewhere. The Castlevania one was actually pretty creepy, from what I recall.
I don't walk down stairs when I receive video notifications, I tumble down them breaking major bones.
I missed you, Jorge Herbahombre. Keep us posted.
I can't believe the first one of these videos came out that long ago... Time goes by fast
I really enjoy these game novel videos
Great video as always! Would love to see a video focusing on game combat systems!
Jill's backstory on why she can pick locks in the book was decently well done.
Holy shit I can't believe that video is already 3 years old.
I literally can't even after this. My brain will boot up next week.
The best time line includes more of these videos
So glad you made a sequel. The original of this is one of my favourite videos of yours. You should look up the UK Sonic the Hedgehog novels from the 90s they're amazing. awful, but amazing. The writer goes full 90's x-treme tude and has a weird obsession with Sonic's metabolism.
George I'm still waiting for my Georgesocks!! They haven't arrived in the mail yet.
you have these moments out of no where that make me LOL for realz
A sequel to one of my personal favorites. Can't wait to see it become a trilogy.
I remember actually reading that old dmc novel when I was younger and I would have never imagine i'd ever see it again. What a small world LOL
