I can never get past Xander dismissing everything that happened with Angel as “boy trouble”. Gee, I wonder why Buffy didn’t feel like she could tell them what happened! I go back and forth between liking Xander and hating him with a fiery vengeance
After everything Buffy's been through can't they cut her some slack? Giles lost Jenny and yet he's been kind and accepting with Buffy, he's the father she never had, but deserved. They all expect her to get back to normal and be there for them when she is still clearly struggling.
That scene with Buffy saying "Breaking into your office and going through your private files" and then destroying the phone in such a casual but also in an "I'm done with all of this" way is one of the highlights of the episode for me.
Giles has not one, not two, but *three* amazing lines, this episode: 1) the faux affable "would you like me to convince you?" 😈 to Snyder; 2) the hilarious, irritated mocking of Joyce in the car; 😂😂😂 3) aaaaand, when Cordelia asks how she can be sure it's him, he just goes: "Cordelia... do stop being tiresome." 😑 To this day, I use it all the time. 😅

Dead Man's Party has its moments "do you like my mask, isn't it pretty, it raises the dead", but it will never not piss me off because of the way thry publicly treat Buffy like she went out of her way to hurt them. Joyce said dont come back in a moment where she had no choice but to leave. she sent the love of her life to hell, her friend apparently said "kick his ass", her other friend couldn't wait for her to do so. Xander never gets called out on what he did in that moment. But us getting our girl back at the end of Anne with a quip. Badass.
I have a hard time thinking that Buffy "made bad choices". She was kicked out of school, was wanted for murder, and had no support from her friends or Joyce. From a 17 year old's perspective, JOYCE made a bad choice and Buffy had no choices. Giles would probably be the only person she felt she could talk to. But even Giles would just tell her she had a sacred duty that she couldn't quit, plus he isn't really someone she talked to about her love life, so I could see how it would be difficult to talk to him about everything. I get that it probably wasn't the best decision for most people. But I think in that moment, leaving was what Buffy needed. I wouldn't condone that for normal teens though. Buffy can beat people up lol Also, I love the scene with the group of people trying to keep the front door shut. Buffy, Willow, Oz, Joyce, and some random guy with his tongue hanging out lmao
Season 3 had the highest ratings, in terms of viewership numbers back in the day. So this was peak Buffy. Not that it's all downhill afterwards. Some of the best ever episodes come later. But all the magic was still young and fresh, and riding the wave after that killer season 2 finale made everything just sort of come together at this point. And they kept it going with more great episodes to prove they weren't going to fizzle or run out of ideas.
Best ratings doesn’t mean the most acclaimed or the most beloved by fans. I will say season 3 is the most crowd-pleasing season. I prefer seasons 3 and 5 though.
@@oneslikeme maybe a couple decades ago. But most fans today would put season 6 in their top 4. In fact, I’d argue it’s become overrated by the fandom.
Sunshine, Chanterelle, Lilly, all of these are non-human names. the latter 2 boing a mushroom and a flower. Anne is her first human name, a signal that she is ready to take care of herself. That she is finally ready to join the human world, and leave behind the fantasy worlds she used to live in.
The season 3 premiere is one of my favorites of the series. And I did love the end of the second one. Giles - "Would you like me to convince you" to Snyder and Willow & Buffy's insult exchange after that was kind of sweet.
Anne is a terrific opener to a near flawless S3. At the start we can see the haphazard amateurish attempts by The Scoobies to patrol with Oz's awful attempt to throw the stake etc. Once we see Buffy as Anne the waitress, we know she can't continue like this and has to help people as is her vocation. Lily of course was in S2 and recognises Buffy, the two of them have a similar story. The part where Joyce blames Giles for Buffy's disappearance is interesting and very true to life where people blame others for their own actions trying to transfer the blame. Buffy of course comes through at the end freeing all the slaves in the Underworld. Some great little comedy moments with Xander and Cordelia again. A great ending with Buffy back home on the doorstep, where no words are needed just relief that she is back. I think we can see the fight sequences improve immensely in S3 onwards, you can now see the show has a much bigger budget with better cinematography and effects.

Anne aired originally on September 29th, 1998. Charmed's second episode aired on October 14th, 1998. So Buffy beat it by a couple of weeks. Season 3 of Buffy was fall 98 - 99. There were a couple of delays on episodes in Buffy season 3 that happened due to real world events.
3x02 may not be the worst Buffy episode, but it is THE one that pisses me off the most. Or at least top 3. The other episodes that piss me off, it's usually because of things that happen to the main characters. In this case, it's because of how THEY act towards Buffy.
I love that at one point you said Willow was masking her feelings. I have always loved this episode for the way they tied in the zombie theme and the emotional turmoil of the gang. As Xander says, "You can't just bury stuff; it'll come right back up to get ya". So maybe the mask isn't just bringing dead things to life, but also those buried feelings at the party.
What I like about Anne is that we get to see the Buffyverse expanded beyond Sunnydale. Even how Buffy is a waitress in a city instead of a school kid. It just helps develop the show
Season 3..... Ok listen i love ALL of BUFFY. But if I was only allowed to watch one season for the rest of my life it would be season 3. I just feel this is where the shows goes from a great show to the best show ❤ So glad to see it again through your guys eyes!
Season 3 is a fucking Masterpiece alongside with 2,5 and 6. Actually all Buffy is a masterpiece and one of the greatest things on tv but these seasons are just on another level of great
Here we go! Welcome to season 3 guys!!! 😊 This is the best part of my Friday. These first two episodes are some of my favorite episodes from this season. In the first episode we've got Buffy in LA trying to get a new start. But the supernatural beings still follow her. And the Scobby Gang(Willow, Oz, Xander, and Cordy)taking over the slaying. The last 15 minutes or so of the second episode used to creep me out when I first saw that episode. Still a great episode with Buffy's return to Sunnydale. Looking forward to the next reaction. 😊
3X01 "Joyce, you mustn't blame yourself." Whyever not? "If you walk out that door don't even think about coming back." Remember that, Joyce? Did you expect her to fall back into your arms after that? And instead of blaming Giles, maybe you could have used the last few months to learn from Giles and Buffy's friends just what Buffy is about, how many lives she's saved and, in fact, even the world. And how much she's suffered doing it. But that would mean learning just how deeply you'd cut her with that line. Lack of accountability much? 3X02 always angers me on Buffy's behalf. Joyce: "You made some bad choices You might just have to accept some consequences." What bad decisions would those be, Joyce? Sneaking out of the house to stop the Harvest which would have freed the master, opening the Hellmouth and ending the world? Or maybe it was cutting classes to stop vampires from killing people in job lots? Or maybe it was taking you at your word when you said "if you walk out that door, don't even think about coming back." Oh, right, you "handled it badly". Well that was a bad choice, Joyce. What consequences do you think you should accept? And while you didn't know that Buffy overheard your saying having her back was "almost worse", you obviously felt it. Did you think she wouldn't pick up on that sooner or later? If you think having her back is worse, then how do you expect her to react? Willow: You skip out on your scheduled meeting with her. You "tried to call"? Must not have tried very hard. And did it ever occur to you that the reason that Buffy didn't call while she was away was because, among other things, was that she was wanted. for. murder, and resisting arrest, and assaulting a police officer? She would hardly want to provide a trace so she could add being unjustly imprisoned to all the things she was dealing with. And then you say you want to know what she was going through but immediately turn it around to what you were feeling. Buffy was accused of murder. She'd been disowned by her own mother. She had to kill her first love, the love of her life to that point. But, hey, you're dating. You're learning magic. Let's talk about that instead. Cordelia. Yeah, get out of Buffy's shoes. Oz: Okay, I'll give you credit in not joining in on the dogpile on Buffy and trying to be referee guy, but, well, you were the one who provided the impetus to turn what should have been a quiet, intimate dinner where you might actually have worked through some of these issues into a big party full of strangers leaving Buffy even more isolated than she started. Good going there. Xander: Where to start. Can we start with dismissing everything Buffy was going through as "boy troubles"? When she said she had to work out some stuff on her own your "you see how well that worked out" Yeah. We do. A lot better than with her "friends". She at least had some time for her wounds to, if not exactly heal, at least scab over, right up until you ripped them open again. And what Buffy had put Joyce through? How about what Joyce put Buffy through with her "you need help" (implying she's crazy--which pretty much explains why Buffy never told Joyce about being the slayer until there was no choice) and "if you walk out that door..." Why is the blame only Buffy's, Xander? Why is it that whenever there's a disagreement you always not only take the side that's not Buffy's but turn it up to 11? This is the episode which fully cemented my dislike of Xander. None of these "friends" of Buffy, not one of them, gave the least consideration about the trauma Buffy had experienced. They only thought about their own issues which were a drop in the bucket compared to what Buffy was going through. But nobody, not one of them, cuts her any slack for her own trauma. This is an ongoing theme in the show. Giles: Giles is the one person, the only person, who was wholeheartedly and unreservedly happy to have Buffy back. And then there's Buffy: "I screwed up, I know this." Only, I don't think you did, Buffy, not with the information you had available. You'd been abandoned by the majority of the people you could expect to love and support you. There's "I think you're willing to forget all about Miss Calendar so you can get your boyfriend back" (could Xander be any more poisonous?). There's "Kick his ass." There's "If you walk out that door, don't even think about coming back." You're wanted for murder. Snyder has a point about the police in Sunnydale being deeply stupid. You have a year and a half of seeing just how stupid they are. If you stay it looks very much like you're going to jail unjustly with no. one. in your corner. Okay, Giles hasn't given you reason to think he's abandoned you (but...your own mother) but what can a school librarian do? Sure, he's also your watcher, but nobody (who hasn't abandoned you) knows that and what good is that to you in jail? Add in that you've suffered trauma after trauma after trauma over the last two years culminating in having to send the love of your life to hell and the last thing you saw was the look of betrayal on his face. Leaving really is the only option. And calling? Can the people who just betrayed you use such a call as a way to find where you are sending the police after you? Are you sure? Mistakes? Yes. But reasonable mistakes based largely on your not having full information (Willow didn't abandon you--Xander lied--and the Sunnydale police actually did figure out that you were not the killer and dropped the charges, along, apparently, with the resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer charge, which you really were guilty of however good your reasons for doing so). But that's Buffy, always taking the blame for things even when they're not her fault. And then the zombies attack and all the issues are swept under the rug to be left unresolved. And, at the end, Willow says she has to "make allowances" but that's not support. That's simply saying Buffy has an excuse for what she considers bad behavior.
The only thing, of all that you said above, that I think has room for interpretation is "you must not have tried very hard".... Keep in mind that this is before cell phones. Not everyone had pagers (we have only seen Buffys be mentioned once -it is possible it got lost, or cut off). It is possible that Willow tried to call the house, after Buffy already left to meet her. 🤷... Just playing the possibility game. Everything else you said, I think you're spot-on Edit: don't get me wrong.... Willows attitude makes it hard to believe that she even tried in the first place
All of this! As this is the episode I developed a little bit of resentment towards how the so called scoobies treat and take Buffy for granted - none of their gripes made any sense to me as "friends" go. I can't even get started on Joyce just nope.

I get both sides, she did disappear w/ no contact & everyone had to adjust without her, things wouldn’t be the same w/ her returning. But she has a lot of healing to do & needed space. It’s a rough situation for her. Communication is key. Joyce & Xander are literally the worst honestly 🤦🏽♀️ Those zombies taking the party crashing too literally 😂 Yes Giles vs the Principal! Giles ranting in his car is still one of my fave moments. Season 3/4 is what some consider "peak" Buffy, so you're in for some good episodes. Hope you check out Angel in conjunction with season 4.

OMG season 3 is soooo good, so existed for you to see this! And Giles just gets hotter and hotter! Love your reactions. Kudos for noticing the one shot in ep 1, there's also an amazing one shot in the finale which you should keep an eye out for!! I also think ep 1 is such a good intro to what the Angel series is like, dark and gritty LA city vibes
With an episode like Dead Man's Party you can see how this show keeps developing looking into the psychological scars that everyone now has. Of course we have Buffy who now almost feels like an outsider after returning, the rest of the gang are still hurt by Buffy's disappearance and are finding it hard coming to to terms with her return. The part where Joyce confronts her in front of all her friends at the party is hard to watch, as many people may have been in a similar situation witnessing something they would rather not see, and that cringing embarrassment that comes with it. The confrontation with Xander is also painful to watch. All's well in the end after the Mask is defeated, but the scars are now there even though covered up for now. Giles threatening Snyder with his Ripper side is a great scene at the end. Great to see Willow and Buffy at the end trading child like insults as only real friends can do to each other.
If you watch episode 2 again, pay attention to Willow's face when they're hanging out at Giles' house and Buffy mentions how they were handling slaying. Willow looks so hurt.
Episode 2 is a really big barrier for me on any rewatch, I just get so pissed off by everyone's treatment of Buffy (except for Giles and Cordelia) 29:05 - I don't see where Buffy made any bad choices tbh? Like what choice did she really have? The police were after her, she was expelled, her mom told her not to come back, and she just had to Angel, who was essentially the love of her life. What the fuck was she supposed to do?
ANNE is on my favs list because I live for the moment she re-embraces her self empowerment and who she is. "I'm Buffy, the vampire slayer" and the way that line is delivered. I also really liked her ar. Of being lost and finding herself again along side helping Lily find her own power. As for dead man's party I'm sorry but they all piss me off yelling at her but when she tried to reconnect they brushed her off. When willow yells at her for running and not talking to them how was she supposed to when you stood her up then made sure to throw a big enough party there would be no talking. I understand they were all hurt but they didn't need to pile on her quite that much without even trying to listen or understand.
So, so happy you are carrying on doing these. You have to do the whole show, please! S3 is for many a favourite, personally I'm a season 4 and 6 obsessive.
The actor who played ken showed up in angel and firefly. He had the trifecta of memorable one shot characters. Also i remember when season 2 ended and i went online and everyone was talking about how they green lit an angel show. Which was a spoiler for season 3. I forgot that he was in the title credits and showed up in dream sequences in the first two episodes. I dont know if i eould have caught on that it meant that he was coming back had i not known about an angel spinoff show. (You guys have to watch angel when its time. After this season)
The idea that Buffy requiring space to process an extremely difficult situation (which is partly to blame on a certain unnamed Zeppo) is framed as a “betrayal” is infinitely infuriating and absurd to me, especially when what prompted the necessity for this space was an abject ostracization by Buffy’s sole maternal figure telling her in no uncertain terms she was no longer welcome in her home. Joyce insists that her reaction is excusable because Buffy didn’t give her time to process *as if Buffy were in a position for that to even be possible.* The world was literally ending, Joyce, sorry your daughter with a world of burden already on her shoulders can’t delay stopping the impending apocalypse because you can’t compartmentalize in recognition of the need for proper time and place for these conversations to occur. The main disconnect everyone has here is that they don’t recognize that Buffy doesn’t have the support group they have when she isn’t around. She doesn’t have anyone to lean back on, meanwhile they all had no issue moving on after only a few months of Buffy being absent. Buffy is a teenager just like them, with just as much understanding and control of the world around her, yet they expect her to be able to act like a mature and rational adult.
OMG! I was the biggest Buffy/Angel fan in 90//00s. This is such a great journey watching this with you guys! This is my favorite season. You have to keep going!!
It’s Friday guys which means only one thing, it’s Buffy Friday yay? You guys are gonna love this season, as a number one Buffy fan since day one, watching it when I was a freshman in high school when it was on tv. Omg it only gets better as the seasons go on that’s all I’m saying.
We need you guys to make to at least season six. There's SO MUCH. My favourites are 4 and 5, and I really think you guys will enjoy the show more and more as the seasons go on.
When I first saw the premiere I almost thought Buffy was gonna stay in L.A. and help the helpless. But saving Anne basically reminded her that Sunnydale needs her.
This is the one season of Buffy I didn't get to watch when it first aired. I was living in Arkansas at the time and there were no WB stations in that area. However I did get to watch reruns later on and it's hands down my favorite season, along with two and five. BTW, Episode 3 of this season introduces my all time favorite character in the Buffyverse. Ms 5 × 5 herself (no names yet because no spoilers 😉)
Buffy's so called friends are the worst and Joyce wasn't any better, not one of them bothered to understand what Buffy was going through. If one of my friends had run away I just be happy they'd come back
To be honest while I love the entire run of Buffy, seasons 3, 4 and 5 are my favorites and fluctuates in my ranking depending on how I'm feeling in the moment. You guys are in for a hell of a ride.
Season 3 is not my personal fave, but I think it’s the most consistently great season wall to wall. No duds, fabulous season arc and Sierra lot stellar single eps. Plenty of brilliance still to come though!
Lily is Chanterelle, the blond vampire groupie in season 2 that wanted to get blessed by the “Lonely Ones.” This isn’t the last we see of her. And this episode marks the beginning of the growth arc of arguably the _best_ recurring character in the series outside the main cast.
Great episode guys. A good remedy for consistent sore throat, that I have found is. An hour before bed camomile tea, mixed with turmeric powder, cinnomon powder, apple cider viniger, half a teaspoon, 1 lemon, and honey. It's a great tea.
Don't know if you guys ever played Civilization, especially early versions. You see, in that game you play against several other countries, and each country has a ruler - Lincoln for America, Stalin for Russia, Napoleon for France etc. India was ruled by Ghandi. Every leader had his own level of... aggressiveness, I guess, which meant that some of them would agree to a peace treaty if you offer it, some would offer peace to you, and so on. Ghandi's aggressiveness was set to 0 - so, appropriately, he was the most peaceful of all. Except that under certain conditions in the game everybody's aggressiveness would go down by 1. And, because of how computers work, and because this situation wasn't foreseen, it meant that Ghandi's aggressiveness would become 255. Yes, sometimes for computers 0-1=255. Go figure. So, because of this bug, Ghandi suddenly became berserk. This bug was actually so popular, that in the next versions they've deliberately preserved it. I don't know if Joss is a fan of Civilization, but this episode is kinda suggestive.
Great reactions to very good starts to a Season. These 2 are examples of how Buffy would address previous issues, start new storylines, and assume that the viewers are intelligent enough to understand the characters and the developing world being created. There will be the occasional comment about best/ not so good season or episode. That’s one of the strengths of BTVS, the show is evolving ( very few change or improve) and takes chances . The debate is not about quality but about the comfort level of the viewers. Buffy will never back down from challenging the audience and always explore concepts rarely attempted. Bottom line, it’s great entertainment until the end and never rests on its past. I can not think of another show that will consistently entertain, provoke critical thinking with wonderful humor and a kick ass hero that just gets cooler. Glad you are into Season 3 and I know you will have a great time.
3x01 I enjoy this episode because it takes it's time in sitting with how the charscters feel rather than getting immediately into what happens in the next episode. And it brings back a fan favorite and renames her twice. 3x02 This is a bad episode for me. Not because it's a badly written episode, though. The badness for me lies in the fact that Giles is the only character likable. Perhaps maybe Oz and Cordelia as well, but despite them not saying anything, they went along with the people who threw the party just so their significant others wouldn't have to talk to Buffy. I would and do understand that there are consequences to Buffy leaving. I love that she even accepts punishment upon her return. But, The Scooby Gang + Joyce aren't willing to care what her reasons for leaving may have been. No one, except Giles, even seems happy to see her, and makes her leaving all about themselves. And none of them bothered to try and understand why Buffy left in the first place. Nor did they think about how hard slaying was while Buffy was gone. Joyce kicked Buffy out (I have seen people argue that Joyce didn't mean it, but it didn't stop her from saying it to a teenager who was in a headspace to believe her). Then in this episode, Joyce says to Pat that it was better when Buffy was gone. That is an issue which moves beyond meaning or not meaning to kick Buffy out. And Buffy overheard it. So her repacking to run away again makes sense. Willow can be upset at seeing Buffy repack all she wants, but she was the one who ignored Buffy's lunch date out of anger. Who's to say Buffy wouldn't've told her everything at said lunch date. So, being upset with her for not saying anything doesn't make any real sense. Xander's phrase of "Willow said kick his ass," blames Willow, severely limited Buffy's front line of battle in _Becoming Part 2_ and shows he doesn't trust the progress Buffy made from _Innocence_ until _Becoming._ [This is my opinion on why Xander should have trusted Buffy being able to kill Angelus: 1. In _Innocence,_ she tells Angelus "Give me time." If _Becoming_ happened next, I would agree with the Xander's argument, but since it doesn't, I don't. 2. In _Phases,_ dealing with Oz's werewolf issue allows Buffy to start the "time." She is no where near ready yet, as Angelus "sends his love" with a vampire in the form of a classmate and Buffy freezes. So, if _Becoming_ happened here, I would agree with Xander, but again, it doesn't. 3. In _Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,_ Xander's issues allow Buffy more of a break from Angelus' Valentine's Day plans. Buffy also starts to read up on Angelus' past. Xander being aware of that means I disagree again because this is the start of their theory not being correct and Buffy starts activly doing things to eventually stop him. 4. In _Passion,_ Xander says he deserves something for telling his friends he told them so before Angelus showed up. This shows Xander using Angelus as an excuse for his Angel jealousy and in claiming he is correct about Angel being at fault for Angelus' actions. He is blinded to the fact that Buffy has come another step closer to being able to deal with Angelus because he feels justified in Giles "getting himself killed" being a good thing, not realizing, in anger over Jenny's death (anger that becomes meaningless in _Becoming Part One_ when he says "Yeah well she's dead"), the fact that Giles will die if Buffy isn't ready to confront Angelus herself. So, once again, I disagree with Xander thinking Buffy can't do it, because she is another step closer. 5. In _Killed by Death,_ Xander witnesses Buffy hunting for Angelus while sick. That is enough to disagree that Xander thinks Buffy isn't ready to kill Angelus. Doing so while sick wasn't a good idea, but it showed the determination proving another step closer and Xander wrong. 6. In _I Only Have Eyes For You,_ Buffy releases everything holding her back by dealing with her guilt over turning Angel into Angelus. One step further away from the Xander's theory. 7. In _Go Fish,_ Buffy takes Angelus on and only doesn't kill him because he throws Gage at her. Xander doesn't see this one, but it shows she is ready and willing before Xander says, "Willow said kick his ass." 8. In _Becoming Part One,_ Xander has issue with Jenny Calendar having come close to restoring Angel's soul and everyone (not just Buffy) deciding to try re-ensoulment before attempting to kill Angelus, and he shows his opinion negatively (as opposed to Kendra who expresses the exact same opinion healthily). He listened to Buffy say she was "done waiting" and reacts badly to the safer idea over taking on an evil vampire to kill him plan. No one with either opinion could have known what the outcome would be. 9. In _Becoming Part Two,_ Buffy is ready. She isn't aware the spell is being recast after it was interrupted. But Xander, after all eight above things happen, still doesn't trust her. Buffy had moved from the headspace Xander assumed Buffy to be in to Buffy not being in that headspace at all and he still makes a choice that effect her front lines of battle for her. It's wrong. Buffy was a second from decapitation when Angel's soul was restored, showing how wrong. Xander is really saying, "Willow said kick his ass," out of jealousy (and being a species-ist) all while limiting information to Buffy, who is about to go to the front lines of battle. Even if you don't know the outcome, not telling someone part of the plan is a bad idea. We don't know what the outcome would have been if Xander had told Buffy the truth, but we do know going into battle without all the information can hurt, and in _Becoming Part Two,_ it definitely did. Debatable for people on whether Xander telling Buffy the truth could have changed it for the better (personally, I believe it would have), but not telling her definitely changed it for the worse. Xander helped create the reasons Buffy felt she had in running away.] The group throw the party just so they wouldn't have to speak to Buffy, despite the fact that they haven't even tried. It makes them seem petty. Buffy had everything taken away from her in _Becoming Part Two:_ school, boyfriend, family, enemy turned ally turned enemy aka Spike, and her friends. Xander made Buffy believe Willow was just as against Angel as he was by saying "Willow said kick his ass," and yells at her for the outcome. Joyce kicked her out of the house and yells at her for the outcome. Buffy knew Oz would just silently side with Willow as he is shown doing in _Dead Man's Party,_ as well as previous episodes. Cordelia and Buffy don't have a friendship. She is just dating Xander. Giles comes off as the only character to show he missed or cares about Buffy. I'm not comparing Buffy to a dog as I say this, but it is a good example: Owners are taught not to punish their pets when they run away and then return, because the dog will think they're being punished for coming back. It's the same with humans. It will feel good to unload your anger, frustration, anxiety on the runaway, but it will also make the person want to split again, as Buffy attempts to do. Buffy has just as much right to be angry at them. She just doesn't realize it because she's being treated as a kicked puppy. If you're telling me it wasn't good for Buffy to be away from everyone for a while, I'll have to disagree. She just should have told them she needed time away while the cops figured out the truth. And I'm also not convinced she didn't tell her mom she wasn't leaving in the note, so there's that.
Dead Man's Party probably would have played a lot better if the gang's vampire hunting hadn't been played for laughs. If it had been played seriously, their resentment would be a lot easier to empathise with, because it would be clear that they'd been risking their lives night after night for months while Buffy was away. But because it's played as a comic relief B-plot in Anne to lighten up the tone, there's no emotional connection to what they were going through but a _lot_ of emotional connection to what Buffy went through, because we see it in detail and it's played very straight. As a result, the conflict ends up completely lopsided. The argument scene is supposed to be a case of everybody being right and everybody being wrong, but because we haven't been made to empathise with the Scoobies' struggles but have a lot of empathy for Buffy, it comes off like they're all just bullying her.
@@Talisguy While I get that, I also think the gang playing things for laughs shows they weren't as angry with her as they claimed until she showed up and had to deal with it because without her around they weren't dealing with it. A type of denial, as it were. The looked more cathartic during the depressing Bronze music scene and it showed they were trying not to feel certain other emotions close to the surface in that scene due to the type of music playing. Then Buffy showed up in the next episode.
They are-recorded the intro and the title logo font is now the one we will see going forward. Buffy started a year before Charmed so season 2 of Charmed would be on at this point

After everything Buffy's been through can't they cut her some slack? Giles lost Jenny and yet he's been kind and accepting with Buffy, he's the father she never had, but deserved. They all expect her to get back to normal and be there for them when she is still clearly struggling.
Within hours of her return, they expect this. And you are correct, with zero reciprocity
That scene with Buffy saying "Breaking into your office and going through your private files" and then destroying the phone in such a casual but also in an "I'm done with all of this" way is one of the highlights of the episode for me.

3) aaaaand, when Cordelia asks how she can be sure it's him, he just goes: "Cordelia... do stop being tiresome." 😑

Dead Man's Party has its moments "do you like my mask, isn't it pretty, it raises the dead", but it will never not piss me off because of the way thry publicly treat Buffy like she went out of her way to hurt them. Joyce said dont come back in a moment where she had no choice but to leave. she sent the love of her life to hell, her friend apparently said "kick his ass", her other friend couldn't wait for her to do so. Xander never gets called out on what he did in that moment. But us getting our girl back at the end of Anne with a quip. Badass.

I have a hard time thinking that Buffy "made bad choices". She was kicked out of school, was wanted for murder, and had no support from her friends or Joyce. From a 17 year old's perspective, JOYCE made a bad choice and Buffy had no choices. Giles would probably be the only person she felt she could talk to. But even Giles would just tell her she had a sacred duty that she couldn't quit, plus he isn't really someone she talked to about her love life, so I could see how it would be difficult to talk to him about everything.
I get that it probably wasn't the best decision for most people. But I think in that moment, leaving was what Buffy needed. I wouldn't condone that for normal teens though. Buffy can beat people up lol
Also, I love the scene with the group of people trying to keep the front door shut. Buffy, Willow, Oz, Joyce, and some random guy with his tongue hanging out lmao

Season 3 had the highest ratings, in terms of viewership numbers back in the day. So this was peak Buffy. Not that it's all downhill afterwards. Some of the best ever episodes come later. But all the magic was still young and fresh, and riding the wave after that killer season 2 finale made everything just sort of come together at this point. And they kept it going with more great episodes to prove they weren't going to fizzle or run out of ideas.
Season 5 is universally recognized as being the best, with season 3 ranking either second or third for pretty much everybody. 😉👍

Sunshine, Chanterelle, Lilly, all of these are non-human names. the latter 2 boing a mushroom and a flower. Anne is her first human name, a signal that she is ready to take care of herself. That she is finally ready to join the human world, and leave behind the fantasy worlds she used to live in.
The season 3 premiere is one of my favorites of the series. And I did love the end of the second one. Giles - "Would you like me to convince you" to Snyder and Willow & Buffy's insult exchange after that was kind of sweet.
Anne is a terrific opener to a near flawless S3. At the start we can see the haphazard amateurish attempts by The Scoobies to patrol with Oz's awful attempt to throw the stake etc. Once we see Buffy as Anne the waitress, we know she can't continue like this and has to help people as is her vocation. Lily of course was in S2 and recognises Buffy, the two of them have a similar story. The part where Joyce blames Giles for Buffy's disappearance is interesting and very true to life where people blame others for their own actions trying to transfer the blame. Buffy of course comes through at the end freeing all the slaves in the Underworld. Some great little comedy moments with Xander and Cordelia again. A great ending with Buffy back home on the doorstep, where no words are needed just relief that she is back. I think we can see the fight sequences improve immensely in S3 onwards, you can now see the show has a much bigger budget with better cinematography and effects.

Anne aired originally on September 29th, 1998. Charmed's second episode aired on October 14th, 1998. So Buffy beat it by a couple of weeks. Season 3 of Buffy was fall 98 - 99. There were a couple of delays on episodes in Buffy season 3 that happened due to real world events.

3x02 may not be the worst Buffy episode, but it is THE one that pisses me off the most. Or at least top 3. The other episodes that piss me off, it's usually because of things that happen to the main characters. In this case, it's because of how THEY act towards Buffy.

I love that at one point you said Willow was masking her feelings. I have always loved this episode for the way they tied in the zombie theme and the emotional turmoil of the gang. As Xander says, "You can't just bury stuff; it'll come right back up to get ya". So maybe the mask isn't just bringing dead things to life, but also those buried feelings at the party.
What I like about Anne is that we get to see the Buffyverse expanded beyond Sunnydale. Even how Buffy is a waitress in a city instead of a school kid. It just helps develop the show

These first two episodes are some of my favorite episodes from this season. In the first episode we've got Buffy in LA trying to get a new start. But the supernatural beings still follow her. And the Scobby Gang(Willow, Oz, Xander, and Cordy)taking over the slaying.
The last 15 minutes or so of the second episode used to creep me out when I first saw that episode. Still a great episode with Buffy's return to Sunnydale.

"Joyce, you mustn't blame yourself."
Whyever not? "If you walk out that door don't even think about coming back." Remember that, Joyce? Did you expect her to fall back into your arms after that?
And instead of blaming Giles, maybe you could have used the last few months to learn from Giles and Buffy's friends just what Buffy is about, how many lives she's saved and, in fact, even the world. And how much she's suffered doing it. But that would mean learning just how deeply you'd cut her with that line. Lack of accountability much?
3X02 always angers me on Buffy's behalf.
Joyce: "You made some bad choices You might just have to accept some consequences."
What bad decisions would those be, Joyce? Sneaking out of the house to stop the Harvest which would have freed the master, opening the Hellmouth and ending the world? Or maybe it was cutting classes to stop vampires from killing people in job lots? Or maybe it was taking you at your word when you said "if you walk out that door, don't even think about coming back." Oh, right, you "handled it badly". Well that was a bad choice, Joyce. What consequences do you think you should accept? And while you didn't know that Buffy overheard your saying having her back was "almost worse", you obviously felt it. Did you think she wouldn't pick up on that sooner or later? If you think having her back is worse, then how do you expect her to react?
Willow: You skip out on your scheduled meeting with her. You "tried to call"? Must not have tried very hard. And did it ever occur to you that the reason that Buffy didn't call while she was away was because, among other things, was that she was wanted. for. murder, and resisting arrest, and assaulting a police officer? She would hardly want to provide a trace so she could add being unjustly imprisoned to all the things she was dealing with. And then you say you want to know what she was going through but immediately turn it around to what you were feeling. Buffy was accused of murder. She'd been disowned by her own mother. She had to kill her first love, the love of her life to that point. But, hey, you're dating. You're learning magic. Let's talk about that instead.
Cordelia. Yeah, get out of Buffy's shoes.
Oz: Okay, I'll give you credit in not joining in on the dogpile on Buffy and trying to be referee guy, but, well, you were the one who provided the impetus to turn what should have been a quiet, intimate dinner where you might actually have worked through some of these issues into a big party full of strangers leaving Buffy even more isolated than she started. Good going there.
Xander: Where to start. Can we start with dismissing everything Buffy was going through as "boy troubles"? When she said she had to work out some stuff on her own your "you see how well that worked out" Yeah. We do. A lot better than with her "friends". She at least had some time for her wounds to, if not exactly heal, at least scab over, right up until you ripped them open again. And what Buffy had put Joyce through? How about what Joyce put Buffy through with her "you need help" (implying she's crazy--which pretty much explains why Buffy never told Joyce about being the slayer until there was no choice) and "if you walk out that door..." Why is the blame only Buffy's, Xander? Why is it that whenever there's a disagreement you always not only take the side that's not Buffy's but turn it up to 11? This is the episode which fully cemented my dislike of Xander.
None of these "friends" of Buffy, not one of them, gave the least consideration about the trauma Buffy had experienced. They only thought about their own issues which were a drop in the bucket compared to what Buffy was going through. But nobody, not one of them, cuts her any slack for her own trauma. This is an ongoing theme in the show.
Giles: Giles is the one person, the only person, who was wholeheartedly and unreservedly happy to have Buffy back.
And then there's Buffy: "I screwed up, I know this." Only, I don't think you did, Buffy, not with the information you had available. You'd been abandoned by the majority of the people you could expect to love and support you. There's "I think you're willing to forget all about Miss Calendar so you can get your boyfriend back" (could Xander be any more poisonous?). There's "Kick his ass." There's "If you walk out that door, don't even think about coming back." You're wanted for murder. Snyder has a point about the police in Sunnydale being deeply stupid. You have a year and a half of seeing just how stupid they are. If you stay it looks very much like you're going to jail unjustly with no. one. in your corner. Okay, Giles hasn't given you reason to think he's abandoned you (but...your own mother) but what can a school librarian do? Sure, he's also your watcher, but nobody (who hasn't abandoned you) knows that and what good is that to you in jail? Add in that you've suffered trauma after trauma after trauma over the last two years culminating in having to send the love of your life to hell and the last thing you saw was the look of betrayal on his face. Leaving really is the only option. And calling? Can the people who just betrayed you use such a call as a way to find where you are sending the police after you? Are you sure?
Mistakes? Yes. But reasonable mistakes based largely on your not having full information (Willow didn't abandon you--Xander lied--and the Sunnydale police actually did figure out that you were not the killer and dropped the charges, along, apparently, with the resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer charge, which you really were guilty of however good your reasons for doing so). But that's Buffy, always taking the blame for things even when they're not her fault.
And then the zombies attack and all the issues are swept under the rug to be left unresolved.
And, at the end, Willow says she has to "make allowances" but that's not support. That's simply saying Buffy has an excuse for what she considers bad behavior.
The only thing, of all that you said above, that I think has room for interpretation is "you must not have tried very hard".... Keep in mind that this is before cell phones. Not everyone had pagers (we have only seen Buffys be mentioned once -it is possible it got lost, or cut off). It is possible that Willow tried to call the house, after Buffy already left to meet her. 🤷...
Just playing the possibility game.

All of this! As this is the episode I developed a little bit of resentment towards how the so called scoobies treat and take Buffy for granted - none of their gripes made any sense to me as "friends" go. I can't even get started on Joyce just nope.

I get both sides, she did disappear w/ no contact & everyone had to adjust without her, things wouldn’t be the same w/ her returning. But she has a lot of healing to do & needed space. It’s a rough situation for her. Communication is key. Joyce & Xander are literally the worst honestly 🤦🏽♀️ Those zombies taking the party crashing too literally 😂 Yes Giles vs the Principal! Willow the witch?🤔 Such a somber start to S3. Sorry for the novel, SO MUCH happened. Awesome reactions guys! 🖤

Kudos for noticing the one shot in ep 1, there's also an amazing one shot in the finale which you should keep an eye out for!! With an episode like Dead Man's Party you can see how this show keeps developing looking into the psychological scars that everyone now has. Of course we have Buffy who now almost feels like an outsider after returning, the rest of the gang are still hurt by Buffy's disappearance and are finding it hard coming to to terms with her return. The part where Joyce confronts her in front of all her friends at the party is hard to watch, as many people may have been in a similar situation witnessing something they would rather not see, and that cringing embarrassment that comes with it. The confrontation with Xander is also painful to watch. All's well in the end after the Mask is defeated, but the scars are now there even though covered up for now. Giles threatening Snyder with his Ripper side is a great scene at the end. Great to see Willow and Buffy at the end trading child like insults as only real friends can do to each other.
If you watch episode 2 again, pay attention to Willow's face when they're hanging out at Giles' house and Buffy mentions how they were handling slaying. Willow looks so hurt.

Episode 2 is a really big barrier for me on any rewatch, I just get so pissed off by everyone's treatment of Buffy (except for Giles and Cordelia)
29:05 - I don't see where Buffy made any bad choices tbh? Like what choice did she really have? The police were after her, she was expelled, her mom told her not to come back, and she just had to Angel, who was essentially the love of her life. What the fuck was she supposed to do?
ANNE is on my favs list because I live for the moment she re-embraces her self empowerment and who she is. "I'm Buffy, the vampire slayer" and the way that line is delivered. I also really liked her ar. Of being lost and finding herself again along side helping Lily find her own power.
As for dead man's party I'm sorry but they all piss me off yelling at her but when she tried to reconnect they brushed her off. When willow yells at her for running and not talking to them how was she supposed to when you stood her up then made sure to throw a big enough party there would be no talking. I understand they were all hurt but they didn't need to pile on her quite that much without even trying to listen or understand.

Also i remember when season 2 ended and i went online and everyone was talking about how they green lit an angel show. Which was a spoiler for season 3.
I forgot that he was in the title credits and showed up in dream sequences in the first two episodes. I dont know if i eould have caught on that it meant that he was coming back had i not known about an angel spinoff show.

The idea that Buffy requiring space to process an extremely difficult situation (which is partly to blame on a certain unnamed Zeppo) is framed as a “betrayal” is infinitely infuriating and absurd to me, especially when what prompted the necessity for this space was an abject ostracization by Buffy’s sole maternal figure telling her in no uncertain terms she was no longer welcome in her home. Joyce insists that her reaction is excusable because Buffy didn’t give her time to process *as if Buffy were in a position for that to even be possible.* The world was literally ending, Joyce, sorry your daughter with a world of burden already on her shoulders can’t delay stopping the impending apocalypse because you can’t compartmentalize in recognition of the need for proper time and place for these conversations to occur. The main disconnect everyone has here is that they don’t recognize that Buffy doesn’t have the support group they have when she isn’t around. She doesn’t have anyone to lean back on, meanwhile they all had no issue moving on after only a few months of Buffy being absent. Buffy is a teenager just like them, with just as much understanding and control of the world around her, yet they expect her to be able to act like a mature and rational adult.

OMG! I was the biggest Buffy/Angel fan in 90//00s. This is such a great journey watching this with you guys! This is my favorite season. You have to keep going!!
It’s Friday guys which means only one thing, it’s Buffy Friday yay? You guys are gonna love this season, as a number one Buffy fan since day one, watching it when I was a freshman in high school when it was on tv. Omg it only gets better as the seasons go on that’s all I’m saying.

We need you guys to make to at least season six. There's SO MUCH. My favourites are 4 and 5, and I really think you guys will enjoy the show more and more as the seasons go on.

When I first saw the premiere I almost thought Buffy was gonna stay in L.A. and help the helpless. But saving Anne basically reminded her that Sunnydale needs her.
This is the one season of Buffy I didn't get to watch when it first aired. I was living in Arkansas at the time and there were no WB stations in that area. However I did get to watch reruns later on and it's hands down my favorite season, along with two and five.
BTW, Episode 3 of this season introduces my all time favorite character in the Buffyverse. Ms 5 × 5 herself (no names yet because no spoilers 😉)

Buffy's so called friends are the worst and Joyce wasn't any better, not one of them bothered to understand what Buffy was going through. If one of my friends had run away I just be happy they'd come back

To be honest while I love the entire run of Buffy, seasons 3, 4 and 5 are my favorites and fluctuates in my ranking depending on how I'm feeling in the moment. You guys are in for a hell of a ride.

Season 3 is not my personal fave, but I think it’s the most consistently great season wall to wall. No duds, fabulous season arc and Sierra lot stellar single eps. Plenty of brilliance still to come though!

This isn’t the last we see of her. And this episode marks the beginning of the growth arc of arguably the _best_ recurring character in the series outside the main cast.
Who do you mean by that? Joyce? As the only other recurring characters featured in these two episodes are Snyder, Jonathan and Larry...

Great episode guys. A good remedy for consistent sore throat, that I have found is. An hour before bed camomile tea, mixed with turmeric powder, cinnomon powder, apple cider viniger, half a teaspoon, 1 lemon, and honey. It's a great tea.
Don't know if you guys ever played Civilization, especially early versions. You see, in that game you play against several other countries, and each country has a ruler - Lincoln for America, Stalin for Russia, Napoleon for France etc. India was ruled by Ghandi. Every leader had his own level of... aggressiveness, I guess, which meant that some of them would agree to a peace treaty if you offer it, some would offer peace to you, and so on. Ghandi's aggressiveness was set to 0 - so, appropriately, he was the most peaceful of all.
Except that under certain conditions in the game everybody's aggressiveness would go down by 1. And, because of how computers work, and because this situation wasn't foreseen, it meant that Ghandi's aggressiveness would become 255. Yes, sometimes for computers 0-1=255. Go figure. So, because of this bug, Ghandi suddenly became berserk.
This bug was actually so popular, that in the next versions they've deliberately preserved it.
I don't know if Joss is a fan of Civilization, but this episode is kinda suggestive.
As you work through Buffy, you will see how many stories Charmed ripped off directly from it. Its wild. Haha.
Season 3!?!? Omg yess!!!
Great reactions to very good starts to a Season. These 2 are examples of how Buffy would address previous issues, start new storylines, and assume that the viewers are intelligent enough to understand the characters and the developing world being created.
There will be the occasional comment about best/ not so good season or episode. That’s one of the strengths of BTVS, the show is evolving ( very few change or improve) and takes chances . The debate is not about quality but about the comfort level of the viewers. Buffy will never back down from challenging the audience and always explore concepts rarely attempted. Bottom line, it’s great entertainment until the end and never rests on its past. I can not think of another show that will consistently entertain, provoke critical thinking with wonderful humor and a kick ass hero that just gets cooler. Glad you are into Season 3 and I know you will have a great time.
3x01 I enjoy this episode because it takes it's time in sitting with how the charscters feel rather than getting immediately into what happens in the next episode. And it brings back a fan favorite and renames her twice.
3x02 This is a bad episode for me. Not because it's a badly written episode, though.
The badness for me lies in the fact that Giles is the only character likable. Perhaps maybe Oz and Cordelia as well, but despite them not saying anything, they went along with the people who threw the party just so their significant others wouldn't have to talk to Buffy.
I would and do understand that there are consequences to Buffy leaving. I love that she even accepts punishment upon her return. But, The Scooby Gang + Joyce aren't willing to care what her reasons for leaving may have been. No one, except Giles, even seems happy to see her, and makes her leaving all about themselves. And none of them bothered to try and understand why Buffy left in the first place. Nor did they think about how hard slaying was while Buffy was gone.
Joyce kicked Buffy out (I have seen people argue that Joyce didn't mean it, but it didn't stop her from saying it to a teenager who was in a headspace to believe her). Then in this episode, Joyce says to Pat that it was better when Buffy was gone. That is an issue which moves beyond meaning or not meaning to kick Buffy out. And Buffy overheard it. So her repacking to run away again makes sense.
Willow can be upset at seeing Buffy repack all she wants, but she was the one who ignored Buffy's lunch date out of anger. Who's to say Buffy wouldn't've told her everything at said lunch date. So, being upset with her for not saying anything doesn't make any real sense.
Xander's phrase of "Willow said kick his ass," blames Willow, severely limited Buffy's front line of battle in _Becoming Part 2_ and shows he doesn't trust the progress Buffy made from _Innocence_ until _Becoming._
[This is my opinion on why Xander should have trusted Buffy being able to kill Angelus:
1. In _Innocence,_ she tells Angelus "Give me time." If _Becoming_ happened next, I would agree with the Xander's argument, but since it doesn't, I don't.
2. In _Phases,_ dealing with Oz's werewolf issue allows Buffy to start the "time." She is no where near ready yet, as Angelus "sends his love" with a vampire in the form of a classmate and Buffy freezes. So, if _Becoming_ happened here, I would agree with Xander, but again, it doesn't.
3. In _Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,_ Xander's issues allow Buffy more of a break from Angelus' Valentine's Day plans. Buffy also starts to read up on Angelus' past. Xander being aware of that means I disagree again because this is the start of their theory not being correct and Buffy starts activly doing things to eventually stop him.
4. In _Passion,_ Xander says he deserves something for telling his friends he told them so before Angelus showed up. This shows Xander using Angelus as an excuse for his Angel jealousy and in claiming he is correct about Angel being at fault for Angelus' actions. He is blinded to the fact that Buffy has come another step closer to being able to deal with Angelus because he feels justified in Giles "getting himself killed" being a good thing, not realizing, in anger over Jenny's death (anger that becomes meaningless in _Becoming Part One_ when he says "Yeah well she's dead"), the fact that Giles will die if Buffy isn't ready to confront Angelus herself. So, once again, I disagree with Xander thinking Buffy can't do it, because she is another step closer.
5. In _Killed by Death,_ Xander witnesses Buffy hunting for Angelus while sick. That is enough to disagree that Xander thinks Buffy isn't ready to kill Angelus. Doing so while sick wasn't a good idea, but it showed the determination proving another step closer and Xander wrong.
6. In _I Only Have Eyes For You,_ Buffy releases everything holding her back by dealing with her guilt over turning Angel into Angelus. One step further away from the Xander's theory.
7. In _Go Fish,_ Buffy takes Angelus on and only doesn't kill him because he throws Gage at her. Xander doesn't see this one, but it shows she is ready and willing before Xander says, "Willow said kick his ass."
8. In _Becoming Part One,_ Xander has issue with Jenny Calendar having come close to restoring Angel's soul and everyone (not just Buffy) deciding to try re-ensoulment before attempting to kill Angelus, and he shows his opinion negatively (as opposed to Kendra who expresses the exact same opinion healthily). He listened to Buffy say she was "done waiting" and reacts badly to the safer idea over taking on an evil vampire to kill him plan. No one with either opinion could have known what the outcome would be.
9. In _Becoming Part Two,_ Buffy is ready. She isn't aware the spell is being recast after it was interrupted. But Xander, after all eight above things happen, still doesn't trust her. Buffy had moved from the headspace Xander assumed Buffy to be in to Buffy not being in that headspace at all and he still makes a choice that effect her front lines of battle for her. It's wrong. Buffy was a second from decapitation when Angel's soul was restored, showing how wrong.
Xander is really saying, "Willow said kick his ass," out of jealousy (and being a species-ist) all while limiting information to Buffy, who is about to go to the front lines of battle. Even if you don't know the outcome, not telling someone part of the plan is a bad idea. We don't know what the outcome would have been if Xander had told Buffy the truth, but we do know going into battle without all the information can hurt, and in _Becoming Part Two,_ it definitely did. Debatable for people on whether Xander telling Buffy the truth could have changed it for the better (personally, I believe it would have), but not telling her definitely changed it for the worse. Xander helped create the reasons Buffy felt she had in running away.]
The group throw the party just so they wouldn't have to speak to Buffy, despite the fact that they haven't even tried. It makes them seem petty. Buffy had everything taken away from her in _Becoming Part Two:_ school, boyfriend, family, enemy turned ally turned enemy aka Spike, and her friends. Xander made Buffy believe Willow was just as against Angel as he was by saying "Willow said kick his ass," and yells at her for the outcome. Joyce kicked her out of the house and yells at her for the outcome. Buffy knew Oz would just silently side with Willow as he is shown doing in _Dead Man's Party,_ as well as previous episodes. Cordelia and Buffy don't have a friendship. She is just dating Xander. Giles comes off as the only character to show he missed or cares about Buffy.
I'm not comparing Buffy to a dog as I say this, but it is a good example: Owners are taught not to punish their pets when they run away and then return, because the dog will think they're being punished for coming back. It's the same with humans. It will feel good to unload your anger, frustration, anxiety on the runaway, but it will also make the person want to split again, as Buffy attempts to do. Buffy has just as much right to be angry at them. She just doesn't realize it because she's being treated as a kicked puppy. If you're telling me it wasn't good for Buffy to be away from everyone for a while, I'll have to disagree. She just should have told them she needed time away while the cops figured out the truth. And I'm also not convinced she didn't tell her mom she wasn't leaving in the note, so there's that.
Dead Man's Party probably would have played a lot better if the gang's vampire hunting hadn't been played for laughs. If it had been played seriously, their resentment would be a lot easier to empathise with, because it would be clear that they'd been risking their lives night after night for months while Buffy was away. But because it's played as a comic relief B-plot in Anne to lighten up the tone, there's no emotional connection to what they were going through but a _lot_ of emotional connection to what Buffy went through, because we see it in detail and it's played very straight. As a result, the conflict ends up completely lopsided. The argument scene is supposed to be a case of everybody being right and everybody being wrong, but because we haven't been made to empathise with the Scoobies' struggles but have a lot of empathy for Buffy, it comes off like they're all just bullying her.
@@Talisguy While I get that, I also think the gang playing things for laughs shows they weren't as angry with her as they claimed until she showed up and had to deal with it because without her around they weren't dealing with it. A type of denial, as it were. The looked more cathartic during the depressing Bronze music scene and it showed they were trying not to feel certain other emotions close to the surface in that scene due to the type of music playing. Then Buffy showed up in the next episode.
