Hush deserves Every single award it got. It was so brave to do an episode with that little speaking. Plus it shows the actors ranges by taking away their ability to speak and having to rely on face and motion. Plus the Gentlemen are truly terrifying.
The Gentlemen are also an interesting metaphor for some of the worst villains of real life, usually old rich white men. Well-dressed and smiling, they float by untouchably and then delicately cut your heart out (white collar crime, many kinds of exploitation, racism, harassment, r*pe), while their minions do their grunt work. The Gentlemen thrive when the whole society is silent, and the only way to defeat them is to find your voice.

Fun fact: Camden Toy and Doug Jones, the lead Gentlemen, scared Joss so much with their smiles that they’re the only ones who don’t have a fake smile on their monster faces out of the group of Gentlemen. Camden passed away last year, sadly. He played multiple monster roles throughout Buffy and one on Angel. His characters brought so much life to the show! One of my favorite people in the whole world. ❤️🩹
From a web post on 5 of the scariest fairytale creatures ever put on film: "The Gentlemen (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) Okay, this one isn’t a movie, but the Gentlemen are some of the scariest fairy tale creatures ever put on film. While they are not “real” fairy tale creatures (they were inspired by a nightmare creator Joss Whedon had as a child in which a floating monster approached his bed), they were described as fairy tale creatures in the Season 4 episode “Hush.” Their modus operandi is that they come to a town and steal everyone’s voices, only to steal the hearts of seven unlucky individuals. About 2/3 of the episode had no dialogue, earning the episode an Emmy nomination, and a spot as one of the spookiest of television ever."
You captured the feeling we had when we first watched these two episodes. In American life, the change from High School is a major change point that is difficult for most all. This Season and your entertaining takes capture the spirit and change . These 2 episodes are classic BTVS but try to look past the great humor and unique moments. So much is happening with each person with their transition from kid the young adult. Also, take a moment and realize the great writing and production that allowed 3 great leads, Angel, Oz, and Cordelia, to leave the show, have new characters replacing them, and all before the halfway point with ease. What a fantastic way that Anya was added slowly the previous year. The audience is spoiled by the great characters and writing that we take for granted how effortlessly this show can change, subtract, add, and adapt while improving without changing the points Buffy wants to address.
I know it wasn't a conscious reference (at least, not based on what I've read), but I love the _Nosferatu_ vibes from the Gentlemen. Also, props for recognizing the "Danse Macabre" - not everyone knows that!
@@beansfriend7033 It was absolutely a conscious reference, The Gentlemen, The Master and The Turok Hahn also the "Grr Argh" monster were all based on/inspired by Nosferatu.
I think The best episode of S4 by far. Brilliant innovative writing, The Gentlemen were among the scariest of BTVS monsters. The cast recalled it was actually exhausting to film with the effort that had to be put in talk but stay silent. The nightmare of being cut into and not being able to scream shown when the student is being held down while The Gentlemen extract his heart, really frightening. The comedy between Xander and Spike brings a little light relief, and also our introduction to Tara. A great stand alone episode. This is a brilliant innovative episode, a fantastic stand alone episode and fan favourite.
Love the reaction guys! Joss said that he made Hush because people were saying Buffy is good because of the clever dialogue so he said watch this! Brilliant
Even though S4 wasn't one of my favourites overall, it did contain some brilliant stand out episodes of which Something Blue was one. The comedy here is achingly funny, and this episode contains so much foreshadowing for later episodes, you can see in S4 Willow becoming more reliant of magic each time she has a crisis, and that the potential Spuffy relationship is hinted at, but in a comedic way. Hilariously funny when Giles and Buffy use the words impotent and flaccid referring to Spike in the bath. Interesting too that Spike is so much more perceptive of Willow's pain over Oz. Overall a great episode to look back on.
You just watched one of the episodes that, with regard to what was possible with an hour of TV, expanded everyone's perception. It was wonderfully experimental...taking voices away, leaving only the actor's expressions and body language. And the cast came through with their A game. There are a handful of episodes from BtVS that were among the best episodes...and this is one of them...but THIS one was legendary TV, universally admired for changing the game and doing something genuinely different. Even while doing something almost revolutionary...every minute still felt precisely like BtVS episode, losing none of its action/humor/horror/drama combo punch.
I saw the episode "Hush" as a kid and it freaked me out so much. I was scared if not being able to scream. As an adult it still terrifes me, but I see deeper meaning to the episode. Tara, Riley/Buffy, Anya/Zander, Giles/ he's new boo were struggling communicating their feelings. Removing their voices helped them undstand each other in a more profound way than actually speech.

Great reaction you two! 😊 These are two of my favorite episodes. Episode 4x09: Willow accidentally casts several spells which causes Giles to go blind, Xander becoming a 'demon magnet', and my personal favorite Buffy and Spike becoming engaged. Episode 4x10: One of the most iconic episodes! We get the finally get the introduction of Tara. The Gentleman gave me nightmares for months after seeing this episode for the first time. They're still pretty creepy all these years later. LOL! Aside from meeting Tara for the first time, my favorite scene in this episode is Giles' classroom lesson about The Gentleman. Buffy, Willow, and Xander paying attention while Anya is watching and eating popcorn. The entire cast did a phenomenal job doing this episode with very little dialog throughout. Looking forward to the reactions for the next episodes. 😊
Yes!!! I've seen Etsy peeps sell tshirts with the "Buffy will patrol tonight" art and it's hilarious!! I freaking love it. The entire scene with Danse Macabre is genius and these bad guys are some of the best and scariest of the entire series. This episode also got an Emmy nomination for writing! Only 17 minutes of dialogue in the 44 min episode, which is insane even today. That's good writing!
Hush is one of my favourite episode, it is just a piece of art! The music is from Christophe Beck, who composed from season 2 to 5 for BTVS, he even won an Emmy for the score of season 2 "Close your eyes (Buffy&Angel love theme)", it's called "suite from Hush".
This was the scariest episode ever. The Gentleman freaked TF out of. Those smiles and the flouting were to much. Hope you enjoyed it. You guys are amazing keep them coming ❤❤❤❤❤the episode I'm talking about is HUSH
Hush is the first episode of the buffyverse I ever saw. Thank goodness for channel surfing and for this stroke of luck. I can't imagine if the first had been the praying mantis one.
The moment you, referring to D’hoffryn, said “Dukakis,” the force of my laugh unhinged my jaw like a f’n snake. I know that may be a 2-percenter, but lord was it hilarious.
"Passions is on!!!" 🤣🤣🤣 Spike has some ups and downs due to the writing but James Marsters always gives it 110% and has a lot of fun with the role. He's a delight!
The main Gentleman is the iconic Doug Jones, you can sometimes tell a monster is acted by him is by those hand movements. He's been so many iconic movie monsters. EDIT: Speaking of Guillermo Del Toro, Doug Jones has played many of the creatures in his movies. He was the amphibian man in The Shape of Water, he was Abe Sapien, Chamberlain, and Angel of Death in the OG Hellboy movies, and he was both Fauno and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth You might also know him as Billy Butcherson from Hocus Pocus
The Gentlemen are easily one of the more unsettling monsters. The idea of being vivisected while still conscious is so rough. Also I love Giles’ overhead lecture, and Xander’s misunderstandings.
Binging Buffy with you guys cured my hangover this weekend, thanks! Since you seem to be burning through all the campy horror/comedy shows, please consider the severely underrated "Ash vs. Evil Dead."
"Hush" remains one of the best thriller television episodes I've seen. It is such a love letter to old school horror, I can't help but enjoy it to the hilt. Very well made, scored, paced ... and the makeup and effects were choice. My only gripe is that the script does not once call for any characters in the story to whisper. If one can breathe, whispers are possible. But I am being picky there, admittedly. My partner and I occasionally (only at home) briefly pretend we are both "Gentlemen" and do those oh-so-poilte and smooth gestures and those dreadfully fiendish smiles at each other for a moment. Then we burst into giggles. It's fun to have inside jokes together, even after you've been a couple for a long time.
Buffy's reaction when Giles drew her as the fat girl and when she mimic the stabbing the wrong way and everyone looks at her funny was hilarious 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I read somewhere about a folk song or something that talked about 'the Gentlemen' coming by and you'd better be quiet or they'll hear you, only I think they were smugglers? Or possibly the Wild Hunt.
“Cars and Buffy are... unmixy things”. Well, we've seen Buffy driving, in the “Band Candy” episode. She did get where she wanted. Mostly. “Imagine walking in on this”. Well, I've never been to American college, but if what I've heard is true, it's not the freakiest thing that happens there. Riley is keeping a major secret, but it's not like there isn't a major secret kept from him too. It's pretty symmetric.
HUSH is, at least for me, the creepiest, scariest episode of the series. Something about the gentleman floating over the ground bothers me way more than it should. And SOMETHING BLUE is fucking hilarious, i can't think of a better combo. I forget which one had Spike in a tight tshirt, bur bonus.
I look at the something blue as a super metaphor... Willow was down, feeling 🔵. The electricity in her spell was blue. Doforryn was blue. Under Willows spell Buffy and Spike were calm with marsage ....blue is a calm color Rileys shirt at the end of the episode was light blue, blue is a trusting color, Buffy realized she can trust Riley
Hush is my fave. Doug jones is perfect as a gentleman I even have a figure of him from back then ❤ These too back to back are so great. Spike is everything
Back to Back Buffy Classics, boys! On Friday the 13th how DELIGHTFUL! Something Blue is a top 5 favourite of mine, just because it's funny and Hush is an all time best episode, JW was nominated for an Emmy for writing this episode, a HUGE leap forward for sci-fi television. And Tara :)

Looking forward to the reactions for the next episodes. 😊
Anya's honesty is my favorite thing in the world
Woohoo! My favouritest episode of Buffy "Hush" is here!
I love how whatever monster they're dealing with, someone just grabs some random book off a random shelf and hey - there it is.
Halloween came early for the HB...
Tara... My heart ❤️ One of my favorite characters in the show. I'm so glad we're here 💕
Love Tara too. 🤗
These are my two favourite all time Buffy episodes. The bit where Spike says about her pouty lip, I still quote that. 😂
You shall give a review in silence but tell us through interpretive dance! 💃
We got to Hush really fast!
Hush is literally the best Buffy episode ever created my favorite was so looking forward to this reaction
Hush is great. I love how offended Buffy gets at Giles' drawing of her and Anya eating popcorn.
The moment you, referring to D’hoffryn, said “Dukakis,” the force of my laugh unhinged my jaw like a f’n snake. I know that may be a 2-percenter, but lord was it hilarious.
"Passions is on!!!"
🤣🤣🤣
Spike has some ups and downs due to the writing but James Marsters always gives it 110% and has a lot of fun with the role.
He was the amphibian man in The Shape of Water, he was Abe Sapien, Chamberlain, and Angel of Death in the OG Hellboy movies, and he was both Fauno and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth
You might also know him as Billy Butcherson from Hocus Pocus
A voice box! Brilliant! I've seen this one so many times, but I never would have got that.
"That is kinda mean..."
Willow has a lot of pent up feelings 😅
"OH. . .BLOODY HELL!!!"
Right there with you, spike.
Also, 'Hush' has to be some of the best 45 minutes of media.
" OK, we're adding someone else to the mix..."
Simultaneously so right and so completely wrong!
"Hush" was named one of the 50 scariest eps in TV history.
Hush is my fave. Doug jones is perfect as a gentleman I even have a figure of him from back then ❤ These too back to back are so great. Spike is everything
Outstanding episodes. 'Hush' being one of the most genius episodes of any TV show, ever.
I need The Horror Bandwagon to do a Halloween collab with my other favourite TH-cam channel, Petty Pumpkins!!!!!
And Tara :)
