One of my favorites of the season. The Xander/Harmony brawl is legendary. The entire post-dysfunction Spike/Willow scene. Punching Parker is always good.
I love how the show filled the void of Cordelia moving over the Angel's show with Anya. Another character that doesn't have a filter, although for different reasons, and yet says things even more outlandish than Cordie ever did.
4x7 is one of those episodes that is just perfectly constructed Buffy. Hilarious, full of great character moments, every character is used exactly right, it advances the season arc satisfyingly, and has several gasp-out-loud reveals! It might not be one of the stand-alone masterpiece episodes that get the Emmy nods, but I find myself going back to it over and over... even if just for that Spike-Can't-Get-It-Up scene 😂
I had such a crush on Riley back in the day! He's a perfect combination of dufus, proper gentleman and get it done, commando type. He is also super fit! ❤
I love this quote from Willow to Riley "If you hurt her, I'll beat you to death with a shovel. A vague disclaimer is nobody's friend." I've used this quote when someone was dating my best friend. 😂
This is the first time we hear the full name of Oz (Daniel Osborne) Often times we learn the full names of characters one time through odd means. For instance Harmony's full name (Harmony Kendall) first appeared in a photograph yearbook that was released for the series. We learn Faith's full name (Faith Lehan) in one of the BTVS RPG books.
The xander vs harmony fight should have been the series finale. And the willow spike scene is beyond hilarious. Although a bit confusing. They start the scene with some very violent imagery that kinda bring SA to mind, with him holding her in bed and covering the sound, and that it turns into an impotency joke
“You made a bear! Undo it! Undo it!” Has lived rent free in my head for the last twenty years. One of my favourite lines from the entire series. Also, poor Xander, getting smallpox and syphilis. All he was trying to do was sexily dig a hole!
"I think my syphilis is clearing up."-Xander "And they say romance is dead..."-Buffy Now that's writing.... 😎 "This is comedy gold..." Welcome to Season Four.
The Initiative contains some brilliant comedy moments, from when Spike says could be 'cosmetic company' in answer to the lab rats reference. Then we also have the greatest fight in The Buffyverse, with Xander and Harmony bitch slapping and sissy kicking in slow motion, a homage to the Kung Fu series of the 1970s. We then have Spike in Willow's room, and the analogy to erectile disfunction, Willow says 'doesn't this happen to every vampire', and then Willow saying it must be me, and Spike saying he would bite her in a heartbeat, all this achingly funny. We now know about Riley and Prof Walsh, and their activity with The Initiative in what is like some kind of Bond Film complex. Riley is almost as awkward as Angel when it comes to chatting up women, but we can see how much he likes her when laying out Parker. An important episode the S4 as a whole.
Fortunately the Chumash did survive. From Wikipedia: "The Chumash are a Native American people of the central and southern coastal regions of California, in portions of what is now Kern, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties, extending from Morro Bay in the north to Malibu in the south to Mt Pinos in the east. Their territory includes three of the Channel Islands: Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, and San Miguel; the smaller island of Anacapa was likely inhabited seasonally due to the lack of a consistent water source."
Yes masterpieces and great episodes too. The first half i think is very strong. It could be the best season with a better main narrative arc. But it aged well and characters development especially Willow's is so great.
@@alooncnej4696 I think you're right. Knowing the behind-the-scenes problems that caused them to retool the story on the fly, there was probably a better story through-line planned that had to be abandoned and, as a result, the story feels a little disjointed.
@@Marvel_vs_Capcom84 I don't think it could ever pass S5 or S6 for me, but I do agree that if the main story hadn't gotten so messed up that it could've been stronger than the other seasons (well, maybe not S3 since that one is so solid all the way through). I suppose if you aren't as big a fan of the standout episodes in S4 then even the main arc being improved probably wouldn't move the needle much, but it might for me. In any event, this winds up being maybe the second worst season to me despite the highlights.
But you put the inhibitor chip in the vampire. Then the secret agents turn it off when the vampires are around someone the government wants eliminated? See how that works. Also interesting they focused momentarily on Spike witnessing Buffy fighting the agents. So he knows she's not part of the Initiative like he originally thought.
They used to post the roster for who was in the dorms on the bulletin board in the lobby of each dorm (with room numbers). Doors weren't locked. Computers were still new and not everybody had access to one. The high schools and colleges were only at the point of computer labs. You had to pay for each page you printed and you had to schedule time with the computer. Now, pretty much everybody has their own laptop, dorms have to be unlocked with your badge, . . . . And they don't list your grades with the last 4 digits of your SS# either. That's the only reason I know my SS#. It was on my school ID, my driver's license and everyone used your SS# for everything.
The three of them on the bicycles: not exactly the calvary, but they've got the spirit. The Harmony v Xander fight was one of the funniest - and most realistic - fights in the whole show.
Happy "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" Thursday evening with Sergio & Cody! 😊 Two of my favorite episodes for this evening. Episode 4x07: Spike wakes up in a secret facility. We learn that it's called the Initiative, and that Riley is a part of it. Spike escapes, but can't hurt humans. Love seeing Willow helping Riley get to know Buffy. Episode 4x08: It's Thanksgiving in Sunnydale! A curse is unleashed, and Xander is infected. Angel returns!
You were almost right on Oz. This was Seth wants to be a movie star era and riding high on Austin Powers and Cant Hardly Wait, so he bailed to go film Knockaround Guys and they had to cut the Veruca arc short
2 fun episodes intertwined with your excellent commentary. It’s always interesting how few shows ever have a Thanksgiving themed episode. Pangs is chaotic but it brings forth the conflict on the emotional response we now have about this holiday . The only thing missing was football. In real life there is often chaos getting everything together and it can be a time when people get together that the rest of the year they don’t spend time . I have always thought that it is Buffy that has the right idea. Just stop… focus on the communal dinner…. and just be together in a group. There will always be conflict, chaos, and deadlines but for a short while can we all take a break together and break bread. The Initiative is just starting and all will come out eventually. You asked the question about the government and demons. Recall Season1, Episode 11 with The Invisible Girl? The last we saw her she had been taken by federal agents to an assassin/ spy school. Then in the following 2 years we saw the local government knowing and working with demonic forces. A reminder…. Buffy has to fight not only Vampires and Demons but societal norms and the administrative state.
I always saw Riley as Chris Redfield. The actor could have done voice acting in my book. That’s how much I saw him as BSAA. He was great and underrated in Buffy.
Pangs the name of the episode refers to the feeling of yearning, wanting or desire for something that you really want but haven't got. Overall I think it's not a great episode best part is the dinner scene at the end when Xander says just like old times with Angel being here, it's so important to watch each show in correct watch order. The look on Buffy's face is priceless, and we can guess what this is going to lead to, we just know Buffy wont let this go.
@@razycrandomgirl I watch it because 1 I’m a huge Buffy fan, and 2 it’s a Thanksgiving episode. Just like we watch Gremlins, Die Hard, Ironman 2, the first Harry Potter movie and a few others on Christmas…it’s a themed episode.
28:36 We see the inner torment within Buffy being played out by her metaphorical mind/intellect (Giles) and her metaphorical conscience/spirit (Willow).
It never made sense to me that Willow was her Spirit. It seems more fitting for Xander. Likewise, Xander seems very ill fitted as her heart, it should be Willow.
Say what you will about season 4 (and I actually have quite a fondness for it) , it has some exceptionally quotable lines. I got belly aches laughing at your enjoyment of these episodes - you have the best reactions, I swear.
Buffy breaking everything in the background 😂 Ooh secret facility full of monsters? Willow 💔 Giles handling weapons 🔥 Xander’s mom making him & Giles punch 💀 Yes Riley punching Parker! Spike’s escape. “She likes cheese” 😂 Wingwoman Willow! 🙌🏼 Xander vs Harmony was hilarious 💀 I knew Riley was gonna be part of the military group! And of course the psych teacher’s in on it too. All the men thirsting after Buffy. Not Spike going after Willow! The not being able to perform Willow/Spike conversation is one of my favorite scenes so far 😂 Angel! 🖤 Anya stanning her man 😂 Sad Spike roaming around like a stray animal tho. Buffy on the perfect Thanksgiving mission. Xander always gets infected with some curse or illness. All the arguing. Spike is comedic gold. Everyone thinking Angel is evil again 😂💀 The Calvary rolling upon bicycles! Giles’ home under siege. Spike just collecting arrows while everyone fights for their lives. “You made a bear! Undo it!” 😂 At least they got to enjoy a meal after surviving the battle. Of course Xander spills the beans about Angel. I needed some levity after the heartbreak of Oz leaving but these episodes had some great comedy. Such fun reactions guys! 🖤
As much as I love Seth Green and Oz, the show grows around his leaving and adapts and somehow remains great. I guess I can't/won't elaborate due to spoilers.
I know this isn't the point, but she didn't have to be a toilet seat for that joke to work. Literally any inanimate object doesn't follow people around, it makes them inanimate objects by definition
Pangs was originall supposed to air after the Angel episode "The Bachelor". Just for your continuity sake, but im sure you guys figured that out by now. :P
John Wick totally ripped off the fight scene. Willow and Spike being supportive and comforting each other is the most weirdly heartwarming thing ever. S4 is where the series repeatedly mines comedy gold.

I’m not sure why but this season is really showing me the pipeline to SMG playing Daphne and I absolutely love it.
