    Got to love how those "one minute reviews" have turned into 21 minutes, but we all know one minute never was enough for synths. Keep them coming!

    Picking up one of these, with that fantastic keybed, for my birthday in a few weeks. Pumped. I have owned a MS20 for a few years (and trust me it is perhaps the best $500 I have ever spent in music) but I am looking forward to not have to retrack everything 5 times for pad chords. I was originally gonna go with the Prologue but after having a month to really battle them out (even in person once) I have to go with this beast. The workflow on this synth is stupid, especially since it's DSI. I played one the other day for like two hours, and besides going into the global to change tuning, I went into a menu like like 3 times for mod wheel and that was it. It's like a DAW synth in a box, but it still has got that analog character. Good shit.

    Question: Onwards from minute 5:14 I the see the noise being turned down completely but it sounds like that there is still a bit of noise coming through. Is that an issue with this synth? Or am I completely mistaken (might be TH-cam that is fooling my ears)?

      Noir Et Blanc Vie Not one single bit. The more complex the synth the longer the review should be. I generally enjoy videos between 5 to 20 minutes lenght, so yours is just perfect. BoBeats makes 1 to 3 hour videos. That is way to hardcore for me. Either way you just gotta stay yourselve. =]

    • @sauce_aux
      @sauce_aux 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Noir Et Blanc Vie I only knew to expect it because of the sonic state review 😂 but I played with the unison enough and found some great stuff so didn't really care that it was only mono, personally. Once you start messing with the sync and "audio out," in the mod matrix, patched to the oscillator pitch and/or shape, you won't miss poly-uni-detune ... I feel like all of the alternative routing options, really does make up for that.

    Are you controlling the Rev 2 with the keys from a Sub 37?

  • @shadowseal22
    @shadowseal22 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    About a week or two into owning this beast and after a bit of disappointment (which comes with most big gear purchases) I have to say this thing is a monster. It fits in so well with my other monosynths. Sure it can't do triangle sub bass like my Little Fatty can, and it is in general thinner than my MS-20 on most settings, anything that doesn't require earth shaking bottom end (or a particular HPF patch) is demolished by this thing. The actual power on tap in terms of sound shaping is even more stupid than I imagined, especially in stacked patches. Put this thing through some good reverb and delay (I use a Timefactor and a TC T2) and it sounds huge.

    • @gribo.9543
      @gribo.9543 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any updates?

    • @shadowseal22
      @shadowseal22 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gribo.9543 About three plus years into owning it: I still have it, but it's a piece I float in and out with. It's a very great synth, and I am back into a season of using it again. Simple patches are really easy to dial up, and dial in, and once you learn the sweet spots of the filter it becomes quite easy to make most traditional poly patches. The Rev 2 definitely has an issue in the low end, I don't think I have ever used it for any bass patch. It's definitely dialed for polyphonic play, so while the leads can be passable with the sub, there isn't enough weight in the low end. It does dial in nice dark pads very well. The bi-timbrality is also a nice touch, though I wish there was a copy layer feature. It also really sucks that high pass filtering (something I actually use a ton to shelve off bass in pads) takes up the effect slot, because some of the in built effects (the mistro phaser, chorus, and bbd in particular) are quite nice. I guess the way to put it is that the synth definitely fills a need in my toolkit, and has a very nice workflow, but I most often find myself pairing it with another layer (I use my hydrasynth a lot when I use the rev 2) or heavy processing. It offers a lot of power, and modulation ability for the price, and the voice count is silly. It is a synth I generally recommend to people.

    • @NoirEtBlancVie
      @NoirEtBlancVie  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Uh oh, this is one loaded question. The answer I’d give you, honestly...whichever free software comes with your interface. (If that’s possible) I use Cubase and Reason, I’ve used them both since Version 1.0. They were my first real DAWs. So I know exactly where to go. If you want to actually work daily in the industry, ProTools, but that’s pricey. So because I appreciate the notation abilities of Cubase, and the flexibility of a Reason program I have to use both. Some might say abelton, but I cannot give you a personal recommendation. All recording software is basically the same 💁🏾‍♂️

      Thanks Stuart, how’d you think it compared to other episodes, too long?

    • @UmbraCrowMusic
      @UmbraCrowMusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Noir Et Blanc Vie A good length for a DSI instrument as sculpturally expansive as this. For most, the price tag is what keeps people from pushing the buy button, so intricate but to the point detail (as shown in this video) nails it home to just buy it if that’s the sound they want.
      Also to note that DSI, among other brands, retain their value, totally worth the additional spend. Love my OB6 and now looking to get this.

      I think its good along with a bass drum, you havent to use a eq. And yes, its not a bass synth xP it shouldnt be.

    • @kvmoore1
      @kvmoore1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're absolutely right. The REV 2 isn't quite as deep in the lowend. However, it has the midrange and high-end on lockdown! It can really cut through a mix nicely. I have the 16-voice keyboard version. It compliments a Prophet 10 nicely. The sound character is totally different between the two synths.

  • @Electric_Crystals

    How are you routing the rev2 with the sub 37? Via midi? Thanks and keep up the great work!

    • @NoirEtBlancVie
      @NoirEtBlancVie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, just the 5 pin din midi input. Works like a charm, I use my Sub37 as a controller for like all my desktop products. (also the filter is broken on it so it's better as a controller than a synth at this point haha)

    Just wondered if you have played the prophet 6, as to my ears it has a better tone, more keeping with the prophet 5. Was your choice based round price or do you think the Rev 2 offers more

    • @NoirEtBlancVie
      @NoirEtBlancVie  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve owned the Prophet 6 since 2015, Dave Smith Instruments sent me the Prophet REV2 though, and well, at the end of the day, the Prophet 6 isn’t going anywhere. The tone on the 6 to me is much smoother, much more pleasing, BUT, there are some limitations with the VCOs. If I wanted flexible, it’s the REV2, if I’m totally about the sweetness of tone P6. Have you heard the OB6?

    • @Fatdogrecords
      @Fatdogrecords 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Noir Et Blanc Vie I love what I’ve heard of the prophet 6 & OB6, can’t really decide. Also do I trade my Juno 60 in for a newer machine? Not sure if I could at this moment as to attached. But maybe looking at one of the above as an addition

    • @NoirEtBlancVie
      @NoirEtBlancVie  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hate to say it, but a friend got the OB6, and OMG, it was heavenly, HEAVENLY!!!! Before making a decision you must play it for yourself! The Juno 60 is probably worth more in 20 years than the OB6 if it can survive.

      Noir Et Blanc Vie the Juno 60 was my first love. I’m hoping for another 20 years. I will check the OB at some point 👊

    • @NoirEtBlancVie
      @NoirEtBlancVie  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe, Novation offered me a peak, but I gotta decide if I want to do this again. Complex Synth cause me to not want them to review half way through. If they give me one for free I’ll probably think long and hard about doing it. What makes you most interested in the peak?

    • @NoirEtBlancVie
      @NoirEtBlancVie  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting question, it’s almost like DSI answered it for us though. Prophet Rev2 - 16 Voices $2000. Prophet 6 - 6 Voices $3000. I own the Prophet 6, I hope to never sell it. Prophet REV2 is nice, it ain’t no Prophet 6. Haha

    Wow, what a monster. Never had my paws on a Dave Smith board, but they seem to be such a different breed of cat than the classic monosynths (I love my ARP Odyssey!) or the Roland polysynths. It doesn't seem to have any limitations, and I can't tell if that's a good thing or not. But wow, love that fat envelope section! Thanks for a great review =)

    • @shadowseal22
      @shadowseal22 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a quirk of how DSI does their synths. If I am not mistaken the same feature is on the Prophet 6, as well as the OB6 (i.e. the pure VCO ones). The knob is more for coarse tuning of the instrument, transposing the instrument. It's basically the same function as octave switches, but for all 12 notes not just the octave. The synth has a fine tune knob that is used for more standard tuning. It's stepping because it's resetting the global pitch of the osc.
