      Agreed! But the sound of the Rev. 2 isn´t that good, unfortunately:-(

    • @quarkyzarky
      @quarkyzarky 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It is exactly that good, actually. I've had so many synths I've lost count. You've not used one. Or you think it's just a prophet 08. I've had it next to prophet 6 and my old synths and it's every bit as good, just in sometimes different ways, it's definitely analog and very refined but can be dark or sweet, soaring or moody, very powerful, beautifully built and great to work with. For the record I was never much a fan of the prophet 08 but I LOVE my rev2 and it's rapidly replacing all my old VCO and DCO synths as a go-to, it's the most VCO sounding DCO synth I've ever used and even the much maligned filter proves to be very flexible and very musical.

      The Prologue has better effects, but sounds pretty close. On the other hand it's also a kneecaped synth missing basic features.

    I just bought a 16 voice rev2 today for 1600 USD. That is a big purchase for me, and I had some misgivings and - almost - buyer's remorse while driving home. After a few hours with this thing, I just want to give it a hug. This thing is really special.

      They just read DCO and figure they gotta hate it. The only difference is how the oscillator frequency is generated!! VCOs are great, but there's no denying this synth is rad, and the fact that it will only drift a miniscule fraction of where a Pro-5/6/10 will after many years of play only makes it sound better to me!

    8:34 good example of how easily the Rev2 can get into harsh, uncontrolled territory with the filters.. not that the synth sounds harsh by default, like many people seem to think, but you certainly have to tame it more often. A Roland synthesizer barely has to be tamed anytime... anyways, really nice synthesizer!

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The $500 range is still great for mono synths, but IMO, there’s no real great poly synths until you started getting into the $799+ range.

  • @Deeplycloseted435

    Prophet 08: everyone bitches about it.
    Rev 2 = Prophet 08 + cheap FX: everyone praises it, “Wow, what an amazing synth! Sounds so analog!”
    The P08 always sounded good. It was the first poly analog released in many many years. I think at that time, too many Virus owners and VST users were used to FX laden presets, and couldn’t get down with the dry sound. The P08 through a cheap $200 multifx pedal sounds great.
    I like the expanded matrix and variable shape waveforms. For me, that alone is a big enough reason to get one.

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Rev2s filter and oscillators have been tweaked as well but overall it sounds similar for sure.

    Honorable Ujiie-san, love your videos and playing. I have an Oberheim OB8 and Deepmind 12 ( which you reviewed ) and once owned a Prophet 08 ( which I believe you reviewed as well ) years ago among a truck load of other synths and I have a question about the REV2.....In your opinion do you think that 2 pole Curtis filter can get an Oberheimish sound if programmed correctly ??? I don't like the OB6 because Dave and Tom didn't stay faithful to the "OB" design. It only has one lfo (the OB8 has 3 ) and even though it does have cross mod I'm not impressed. For $3000.00 I expected more. Thanks and look forward to more of your videos !!!

    Also... Nick Batt from Sonic State does nicely review it as well. More into technical parts of the synth. Katsunori Ujiie is a better player than Nick and focusing on different parts. I like to watch both of these guys. Same as chosing one synth above the other; often a matter of taste and money. Saying Korg is the holy grail is just useless fanboy behavior. Yes...the Korg Prologue 16 voice is also a very nice synth but i didnt want to strech my budget more than the 1330,- euro's i payed for the Rev2. Maybe ill buy a Korg synth in the future...or a Novation...or a Roland....or....

    I think I would keep the FX button on this synth in a permanent OFF position. The built in effects seem fine for live use, and maybe this was the design intention anyway, but for anything else they are holding the synth back. Treat this like the P08 and you'll love it. Use the FX and you'll probably be scratching your head a bit as to why it doesn't sound quite as nice as the P08.

      I prefer it to prophet 6/ob-6, it has a MUCH nicer, refined tone, not as raw no, the filter isn't as rocking no, but it's a way better synthesizer and still beautifully analog. I'll be honest, this guys videos are fun but he rarely EVER shows a synth in its best light, here it makes it sound very small and a bit tame.. maybe just some presets? When you program this beast, wow, it's so rich, beautiful, full, textured, warm and far far better than just a Prophet 08. On top of that it's a beauty to program with very few shortcomings vs the limited ob-6/prophet 6.

    • @shamuscoghlan
      @shamuscoghlan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info. I will have to go and check them out in person. One thing I like is the idea of more poly, and also if I went the Desktop I could upgrade to more voices later for basically the same cost as buying it straight out. Analog is key though and I need something to push big fat pads and chords. :)

      Neighter the Korg nor the JD-XA have aftertouch. For me personally, that’s an instant no-go for a synth or workstation.
      If you can settle for a analog-modeling digital synth with no aftertouch, i’ll recommend the Kingkorg.

      +J Cesarsound It's bit like comparing a Juno 60 to a Jupiter 8. Both great. The Jupiter is a lot more powerful but also a lot more expensive. The Juno has a good base sound, but is more limited.
      The same goes for comparing the DeepMind with the Prophet Rev2.

      The secret of JU60 is its Chorus Processor (it is an analog BBD bucket brigade).

    Nice playing by Ujie-San as always! Listening to the demos, I'd never be GASsed to replace my JP8 or OB-XA with one of these clinical modern DSI units. Maybe it's me but I still prefer the sound of the Prophet 5. I do love the look of the Pro 2 - simply gorgeous layout.

      The OB-XA sounds like heaven and the Rev. 2 seems like a decent workhorse but the filter is just....lame. Hopefully DSI will make a big brother companion to my OB-6:-)

      Filter is fine for the synth in question. I prefer it to prophet 6 (not the filter but the synth), the REV2 is not the same old Prophet 08, it's a much better synth and can sound very very beautiful, dark, moody, sweet, powerful it just doesn't really sound raw. Overall though the best synth I've had and I've had many synths (inc vintage VCO). I'll take rev2 over Prophet 6/ob-6 anyday and maybe even over Prophet 5 for how actually useful/musical the REV2 is compared to the less useful or inspiration older, simpler but nice sounding '5.

    hey - that's just like that keyboard I have!! seriously - 99% of the presets in this thing are horrible. the other 1% are barely usable. you have to make your sounds from scratch (it has an initialize feature which starts you off with a saw tooth at 16' or something and you can build from there.) most of the patches make it sound like a VA - whoever came up with them must not want them to sell many of this model. I would have loved an OB6, but this was half the price and has a full sized keyboard.

      So program your own sounds? I've heard it's actually really good when you do that.

      The whole point is to program your own sounds. I don’t know any synthesizer enthusiast that buys a synth for the presets. Get your head out of your ass.

      I LOVE my rev 2! Have all the original Junos (60, 106, Alpha Juno), Korg Monopoly, Polysix, and had a Prophet 6 on loan for 2 weeks. I a/b'd all of them very thoroughly. It definitely stands up to all of them. I would say its tendency is to be a bit clearer and smoother (kind of like a 106) but all that vintage goodness can be easily programmed in with the excellent interface. Seriously, for a synth with this much modulation power/options it's super easy to use. Build quality is fantastic, it looks badass, and the keyboard is fantastic, the best of any synth I've played in terms of response and action. I'd say some of the oldies have a bit more body and richness but in terms of sheer versatility with analog sounds, and for actually having something to fill basically 90% of what you'd use a synth for in recordings it doesn't get much better than this!
