The Dodge Durango SRT and Ford Explorer ST are two 3 row SUVs that offer some performance so you are not completely bored while driving your family around. The SRT features a huge Hemi V8 making nearly 500hp, while the newer ST comes with a turbocharged 6 cylinder and some more modern tech. How do they compare? Is one better? I met up with my friend Justin who owns a Explorer ST and we took a look at both! Make sure you check out the individual videos on both of these SUVs!

Hellcat durango coming soon
I think they are both really nice vehicles. I’m sure some will disagree but even though the Durango has more horsepower I just love the way a forced induction engine feels over the V8!!!! Anyone agree? Thanks for the consistent videos by the way.

The look of the Durango and interior if you go mess with both of them are the biggest reasons the Durango is better, the sound is another pro but I’m a man so I have to get the Manly vehicle
Only when filling up would I prefer a V6... If you've ever driven a loud and powerful V8, the sound is intoxicatingly addictive!

Just bought a 2020 Explorer ST and I LOVE it. A friend of mine has an SRT and that launch control is absolutely BONKERS. But to me, it looks like a painted up soccer mom van. Styling definitely goes to the Explorer.
For the money, styling and the fact that extra 75 HP is sorta neutered by the weight, I'm fully satisfied with my choice.
(It is worth re-hashing how insane that launch control is though. A lot of fun (and trouble) to be had with that. Lol)
Interesting take. As a person who thinks very few SUVs look good I think the Durango is probably the best looking one, the ST does look like a cop car though which is a little intimating. Both are good in the looks department. The ST seems to be a better daily while the SRT would just be a more fun car to have as a rental or if you have multiple cars and just need a kid-hauler to have a break from your sportscars.
In the used market these cars have about 10k in difference nowadays. So a much closer choice. The ST seems like a better daily and can be tuned easily and is efficient; But there's just an overall cool factor that the durango SRT has.
Durango running on a 9 year old platform for the most part compared to the brand new Ford redesign, Durango still holds up!!! And the explorer while nice still just doesn't do it for me.

@@carguy0389 ... it still looks like a minivan. It's fast as FUCK! But if I were going to buy one, I would go with the Explorer simply because it doesnt look like a minivan. The ST is also super fast for an SUV, and I MUCH PREFER the sound of a V8 over the V6, but looks are important. When the Hellcat Durango comes out.... that may be a different story.
Preston Quimby funny true story friend used to have a new 2012 Nissan Quest company van back in the day and used to race my buddy’s rt Durango all the time and 3.5 Nissan Quest would beat that 5.7 Hemi everytime

Both good lookin vehicles but the Durango style sound and presence just looks so much more aggressive
I made a comment few weeks ago asking who really pays 80 grand for a Durango SRT and my inbox is full of people who answered me and all said with rebates and incentives and getting the employees discount from dealers they got these trucks between 55-60 grand and for that price 490 horsepower all wheel drive hemi powered truck u can’t beat it even with no center console lol

We tested 3rd Durango space in the review! And the Durango would easily win in a drag race.

The stock rims on the ST make such a huge difference... I have the 21’s on mine and it makes the ST look MUCH better!! He has very ugly winter rims on his.

that dude.. what? at about 9:15 he complains that kicking the shifter to the left means it goes into manual mode - every single car is like that. he's probably really butthurt that his brand new explorer is way worse to drive than a 20 year old platform durango
Ford compares the 400hp ST to the 375hp RT not the 485hp SRT.
So no wonder they’re 20K different they weren’t meant to compete. The Durango is actually a cheaper option with much more ability to mod.
@Zsavage1 lmao. Put a tune on the Durango and it smokes the Ford. Your arguement is a stock srt n/a v8 versus a tuned st 2x turbo v6. Yeah that doesn't make sense. I wouldn't put much stock in a v6 twin turbo over a naturally aspirated v8. 20k for more comfort, better leather, more reliable engine, and stock to stock is faster. If ford made a rs explorer you'd be paying as much as that durango. That st is comparable to the rt Durango not the srt.

had a '22 ST and now a '23 Durango SRT, SRT looks more macho and muscle, ST more modern, had my ST tuned and borla exhaust... SRT still way more fun and ear candy. Durango can also tow 3000 lbs or so more

The Durango RT is the best and cheapest choice of the three performance vehicles.
Just looking at the Durango at the dealership it’s bad to the bone not counting the superior interior quality, sound, resale value.

This is like comparing a Mustang 5.0 to a Camaro ZL1.
The only color the ST looks meaner in is black. SRT looks mean from the front but a mini van from the back. With Explorer just hold up the electronic parking brake rev the gas up to 3K and the let go of the switch.

Durango srt’s are dope. If their interiors were nicer I’d really think about trading in my 19 ram 1500 for one.
I like the v8 better than turbocharged...ford kind of played their hand by making the 7.3 for durability...so what does that say about their small turbocharged motors...imo
ST is impressively fast, but it’s ugly af. I would take the SRT Durango all day everyday! Plus the Durango sounds sooooo much better

What are you referring to when you're talking about performance? Explorer handles better and has better handling feel. Straight line acceleration isn't the only aspect of performance.
ATX Trent The SRT Durango has better steering feel it has Bilstein dampers and has 2 piece rotors and 6 piston brembos in the front and 4 in the back. Easily the srt is the better performance car. Ford is not even close to what FCA provides in the suv performance class.
Invest the extra money in mods on the ST and you can top 500 WHP fairly easily.

This is my opinion, of course. They don’t look like they are in a similar category. The Durango looks so much sportier. It seems to me that we are comparing a “normal” suv with a sport oriented suv. It doesn’t seem fair. The Durango wins for me. Hands down.
You need to do the review with the ST street package huge difference
The Ford ST Explorer is sold overhere (Netherlands, Europe) as PHEV (Plug-in) with 460 HP, which promisses to give better performance. The Durango has not been sold here really, due to the CO2-Emission Tax, which is for the Durango with the V* around the 80,000 dollar (yeap, just tax), bringing the sales price around 160,000 dollars....(Give or take a bit). As a reference, you can buy a Jeep Wrangler here with the 2.0 liter petrol engine and that generate 55,000 dollor in CO2 tax, so the sales price is around 125,000 US Dollars.....

I've driven both and the overall look goes to the Durango for sure but, overall price, gas and features. The explorer is way better. Launch mode on the Durango...is fun😏😏
$600 tune on the ST will give you another 100+hp and torque. Chuck on an intercooler and you are going to be doing 0-100km in 3.8.
The ecoboost tunes amazingly well - TFL raced a Durango SRT against a tuned (5 star) ST and the ST won BUT it wasn't the blow out you would expect.
Ecoboost is the Best tune platform
I’m sure the Explorer is a better car, but I prefer the looks of the Durango both exterior and interior.
The Durango rear light looks like more like Kylo Ren's helmet.
I don't care for the rotary dial drive selectors.
The new looks of the Ford Exploder still have not warmed to me, more of a fan of the Range Rover looks on the older one.

I like both of these--but with biden in office and gas already going up 15%--the SRT is off the radar. I have rented both of these and the gas mileage can be almost 10 mpg in favor of the V6--SRT products drink premium fuel--especially the 6.4.

The Explorer would look a lot better without all the matte plastic cladding. It makes the ST look like a base model. The Durango looks a lot better overall in my opinion.
I personally don’t think its a comparison. The SRT might be old but it is still hanging with the big boys. Competitors need to come out with something serious to compete with the Durango SRT. Just saying.

The explorer is nice but the Durango looks more sportier and aggressive not to mention the exhaust sound especially when it's straight pipe I like the explorer too but I really think Ford should've used the 3.5L TT high output engine the engine from the raptor if I had to pick one I'd probably go with the Durango rt 5.7L the srt is out of my price range or rather I can afford it with some budgeting but why spend almost $70k when they have the 5.7 for much cheaper and sounds just as good and is quick enough to pass up the average fuel efficient 4 cylinders out there bs'n around on the streets

Disagree the Durango Tows more by almost 40%, Similar fuel economy in real world, Durango has better quality materials and similarly priced when equally optioned and you can get massive rebates on the Durango.
Correct, ST is more space efficient, which means more combined legroom (larger people can fit in all 3 rows), lots of 3rd row headroom, larger cargo area (spare tire is still under the cargo area load floor despite being RWD) and more storage space in the interior. Also an IIHS Top Safety Pick +

Even though the explorer is significantly cheaper, the interior is disappointing for 58K. I’m hoping they give it some red leather trim and better surfaces up top.

They step their game up way more and for under $30,000 you can buy a brand new third row SUV with almost 300 HP with nicer interiors than most imports around $40,000
As for reliability it 100% depends on the driver dodge markets to people who are much harder on their vehicles and want a fast loud bad to the bone vehicle to treat like a toy. Toyota which is the most reliable manufacture markets their vehicles to middle age and older people who want reliability and intern they take way better care of their vehicles and hardly read them up there for extending the life of that vehicle and continuing the cycle
People who treat their vehicles very nicely want reliability and buy those brands continuing the Reputation. Manufactures like Jeep who encourage people to go rock crawling (look up on TH-cam how many people do dumb things with the vehicle) and marketing powerhouse drag beastly vehicles doesn’t attract people who care about their vehicle
Attracting people who go off road also doesn’t attract people wanting reliability, either way jeep and dodge sold over 2.1 million New vehicles in the United States alone last year

@@RomanM803 the 2013-present range rover was developed under ford ownership, hence the aluminum body and land rover resourced 3.0l diesel found in the F150. Durango is just an old and heavy Mercedes ML with a 3rd row.
The Beats audio system is garbage compared to the Harmon system.
Buy the ST, it will smoke the SRT with a simple tune and will absolutely demolish it in the corners its not even close. Dont skimp on the performance/street pack its a huge difference

The ST would be the perfect performance SUV if it had power closer to the SRT SUVs stock and an actual exhaust note. However, the ecoboost v6's sound like crap so maybe Ford did us a solid there.

It all comes down to taste. Personally I think the Explorer, with much nicer rim's of course, looks way better. The Durango just looks like a bloated whale.

Holy cow! Have u guys seen the massive ass whipping a bone stock Explorer ST with a $600 "5 Star Tune" gave the Durango SRT on the dragstip in the TFL channel? So much for the $15k 70hp advantage of the SRT!
Hate to break it to ya, but a tune no longer makes it bone stock. Livernois has tuned a ddsrt to an additional crank 95hp. It added 60 awhp. Tune for tune, ddsrt wins again. With that said, without voiding your warranty with a tune, ddsrt is a better bang for buck. Yes, ford and dodge can and will void warranty for a tune. They look for check sum values that cannot be overwritten or fudged.
"Bone stock" now comes with a tune, man your really trying hard to make that ST look good, it's not working

Late to the party here but when you are going to compare and put 2 cars next to each other have them the same color. Also take them for a quick test drive together. The price difference is more like $10,000- $15,000 depending on where you buy it and unfortunately many Police forces now have the Ford Explorer as their car. That makes it a hesitant buy for me and I support the police.

Explorer looks like a wannabe range rover... kind of loses points for individuality. Ford refreshes their lineup much more frequently in general. But the sales numbers are obvious that it doesn't make that much difference. Dodge changes very little but people appreciate the simplicity and consistency.
