It was more than that...most of the stories just lacked creativity. Honestly, the only thing which rescued the series was the finale, because that one was quite clever and did a lot about the "bleakness" of it all.
And I will never forgive them for basically making Peggy a female Steve instead of actually exploring how SHE as a character would act in various situation. For someone who watches a lot of dr who, you don’t recognize a paradox when you see it. Strange can’t save Christine because her death makes him who he currently is. It’s the equivalent of 9 and Rose’s episode where they save her dad, but instead of a “you shouldn’t save her”, it’s a “you can’t save her”

Yeah I thought the same. If she didn’t die then he wouldn’t become a wizard. It’s also like fate. He was maybe always meant to become ‘evil’ . I think it is plausible that he can never save no matter which methods he took. But did use every method ie eating peoples’ life force. And does ‘save’ her the cost was too high . Felt like he didn’t really get the episode or missed the point.

I mean it is a bit of a stretch in some aspects to an extent but it’s very easy to use context to point out how it’s not as ridiculous and nonsensical as you made it out to be with your simple 0 detail complaint about it.

@@technica7788 Body=eyes? No lol his body is a vibranium mesh like mix with organic/synthetic material but idk wtf his eyes are made out of lol
I don’t remember what arrows do to his body in the MCU if anything at all besides use abilities to mess with him yet either way it is an eye shot not body shot
Yeah the pressure was to his solid vibranium mask not his eyes and it was more so to his head not the eyes in the mask anyways
So if I’m being fair there isn’t any feats for or against this cuz the eyes are featless so it’s hard to say for sure yet Ultron Drones got their eyes pierced so narratively it isn’t a massive reach.
Either way this is more so a nitpick tbh
There’s worse or more questionable power scaling in other episodes like the Black Order hurting Thanos at all which is bullshit but I guess this thanos is weaker cuz he is a nice guy since in End Game the directors said the younger thanos is in his prime cuz he’s still in his War Lord days yet this is an example of bad power scaling.
Also Thanos in the zombie episode gets bit and infected yet Hulk didn’t, like Hulk not being infected isn’t bad cuz of his biology with genetic resistances but the bites didn’t even break his skin and he fought Scarlet Witch which is confusing since in Infinity War it’s said by the directors that Thanos and Hulk are equal (even tho it’s wrong by the feats) yet Hulk is more durable, and Wanda who could kill Thanos doesn’t quickly Kill Hulk is weird cuz that would make him stronger, tho in the finale Wanda was around still so maybe she beat the Hulk eventually either way these are some scaling inconsistencies unless Hulk got stronger it’s bs lol
Yando’s arrow being able to break Hela’s Crown is also bs I don’t think I need to explain why so this is bad too, the only excuse I can think of is that it’s not her level without her yet idk it isn’t explained or implied so it’s bad scaling too
I could try to think of more but those are the worst imo tbh
Captain Marvel vs Phase 1 Thor would be bs if it if wasn’t clear she was holding back she even says so, and the power she is using is compared to 10 nukes which is in the range of that Thor who made a storm in avengers which was city level and later in AoU he does a Mountain level feat destroying the city in the sky.
So there are disappointing things just the power scaling isn’t really bad in the last two episodes there are other episodes with more solid issues.

Absolutely loved the Dr strange episode and the Ultron episode. The final episode, however, disspointed me. I felt as though they completely nerfed ultron. In one episode making him so powerful that he can slice through thanos with 4 infinity stones in a single hit, or break through the 4th wall and fight (and beat) the watcher. Only for the next episode to be b*tch slapped by characters like killmonger and black widow.
And yes, yes. I understand that they were being protected by Stranges power, but still. The whole "guardians of the multiverse" thing was very cheesy. I personally wouldve preferred it to focus on Strange vs Ultron, rather than the pacing be constantly interrupted by thors quips, and seeing him have to carry the whole team and prevent them from instantly dying every two minutes.

Okay I watched the full thing to make sure you didn't bring it up like you referenced. The reason the zombies episode ends the way it does is that its an homage to the way Dawn of the Dead ends, one of the most famous zombie movies ever. The survivors find a helicopter and fly off into the sunset, in an ambiguous "maybe they make it, maybe they don't" type of ending, which I think is the perfect way to end a zombies storyline.

13:00 Have you not seen The Time Machine or Stien's Gate? Protagonist's girl keeps getting killed by time/fate is a time travel trope I love & I enjoyed seeing it in the MCU.
And I wouldn't say Strange went evil. He did evil things trying to save the woman he loved but once he failed he's still the same guy. That's why in the final episode he is like normal strange.
I have a general problem with the common use of "redemption". The term is far far far to commonly used in incorrect places. Strange never redeems himself for destroying his universe. Redemption would require him to be sorry for what he's done (which he is) & to take steps to either reverse it (he can't) or to never do it again (we presume he will do this but a redemption arc will be showing Stranges journey to process his bad decision & live with the regret).
What we get in the finale is a Strange who's destroyed his universe & is forced to live with that. He's a morally grey character because the extremes he was willing to go. He's not redeemed merely because he's fighting with the good guys in this circumstance. Like I just said, his redemption wouldn't require him to learn how to help people & fight Ultron--because he is basically the same Strange as the MCU--the only difference is the fact is became obssesed with saving Christine and was willing to destroy a universe for her. That's his grey-ness.

I only really enjoyed 4 and 8, it's awfully confusing to me what you're talking about with Strange being redeemed, like he was literally doomed to an eternity of nothingness, with the combined personality of the two halves of himself coming out to help and then returning to nothingness, seems like quite a punishment rather than any redemption. it was baffling to me that you liked 3 tbh, as it seemed to just throw random shit together for no reason, the reveal is stupidly obvious, and it contributes nothing to the overall story, which is also a problem with 5 even though they make a brief appearance in the finale. 3,5, 6, and 9 all had massive pacing issues, just hopping all over the place because of the time constraints, Killmonger being the worst victim; with it just stopping out of nowhere. One of 4's strengths was that it counteracted that perfectly, by having a mechanic which can be rushed, being the time loop. This allows it to have the emotional impact it deserves while still conforming to the time frame.

I don’t necessarily disagree with your assessment of the quality of the Killmonger episode, but I do disagree with your take on the character or lack of differences from MCU Killmonger. “What If…?”is about the universe that we know that has one diverging point that leads to the changes that we see. In Episode 6, that diverging point was Killmonger saving Tony. Everything that turned Erik Stevens into Killmonger still happened, thus his character is still the same. It would be hard to buy that a character who is fueled by rage and hatred at how black people are treated by the world, particularly America to learn a softer approach from Tony Star,k, a symbol of that same power structure that Killmonger hates so much. The best he could learn from Tony was a more nuanced take where these issues are more layered in the sense that he realizes that Tony wants to do good, but doesn’t understand the full weight of his actions. I still think he would be resolute in killing Tony for his mission because he was that committed.
Creating outreach programs is something T’Challa comes up with after recognizing that Wakanda could and should do more. That solution comes from a different place because T’Challa had a much different upbringing than Killmonger, one without that same rage and hatred. T’Challa listens to Nakia’s idea because T’Challa isn’t weighed down by pain like Killmonger. Killmonger wanted the world to feel the same pain that he did, so that Killmonger, as presented to us, would never create programs designed for more peaceful ends.

Completely agree. Killmonger is still Killmonger. The key difference here, is he had a way to execute his plan better and win. Which it’s the premise of the episode you feel? WHAT IF Killmonger won, is pretty much the name of the episode lmao.
Tony’s influence was definitely not gonna change him, especially because this Tony should be the one that still makes weapons and didn’t get that whole treatment to become a hero. He’s still the same play boy genius who makes weapons, he isn’t really a good guy.

Exactly. It's the same reason why the question "Why doesn't Thanos double resources?" is so dumb: because Thanos is a genocidal nutcase! He doesn't care about making things better, he just wants to be proven right! Kilmonger is similar: he doesn't really want to "help people," he wants to cause pain for those he perceives as evil.

The efficient design of the Ultron form, merged with the intellect of Zola was spot on! Also the green effect throughout it was a really nice touch. Honestly shocked that you didn’t enjoy the Dr Strange one, personally I find that one to be the strongest episode by far. Although calling parts of it comical was a bit much I think. Especially when in the previous episode Hulk pops like a balloon. Seriously that moment kills all momentum for me in that one and just becomes a Looney Tunes cartoon at that point.
I do 100% agree with your opinion on the finale. I didn't need What If? to end with some big epic crossover everything on the line final battle. We get that with the MCU main. Really wanted this to just be fun palate cleanser anthology series but we didn't get that.

  • @empiricalsmut9419
    @empiricalsmut9419 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

One of the most goofy, frustrating things about What If, is that it regularly relies on "one-upping" and humiliating established characters in order to "empower" the new iterations. Some examples:
Red Skull and Hydra are made a complete joke in the Captain Carter episode -- Red Skull is crushed like a bug in a silly, humiliating moment (even though, if Carter was strong enough to push the beast into the portal, Red Skull should have been strong enough to resist getting crushed, since his strength should be equal).
In the T'Challa as StarLord episode, Thanos is turned into a goofy goober by getting wiped out by his Black Order (even though he took on the Hulk, as well as the three lead Avengers, solo, without utilizing the gauntlet). For bonus points, Thanos was simply convinced out of his genocidal plan by T'Challa, even though the entire leadership of Titan failed in convincing him.
In the same episode, Peter Quill is low-key mocked by having him be a Dairy Queen employee at the age of 34. Peter is kind of a goof in Guardians of the Galaxy, but that is at least partly due to the fact that he was essentially raised by savage Ravagers, and didn't get much of an education, so he's kind of immature and airheaded. The What If episode, however, just makes him come across as a loser with no higher aspirations, which is made worse by the fact that, despite the Ego tease, he ends up getting saved by T'Challa five seconds later. I also doubt that Ego would have resorted so quickly to draining Peter -- the only reason Peter turned on Ego in GOTG2, was because Ego made the dumb mistake of admitting he killed his mother.
One final thing that bugged the hell out of me, was the fact that Thor is getting more stupid with every new appearance. Thor was never an intellectual, but Party Thor suggests that without Loki, the God of Thunder would become an absolute idiot. Seriously, this guy has access to the best education on Asgard (he took the language of Groot as an elective) over thousands of years, and he sounds like an absolute dumbass.
One of the only things I liked about What If as a whole, was Ultron, although honestly, he needs to come back in the main MCU movies, because he is just so cool.

I think Phase 4 of the MCU has really exposed the weaknesses it already had. Although Phase 4 is Marvel firing on all cylinders, that also means they are reaching their highest highs, but also their lowest lows. For me, I have really enjoyed all of the series they have released except for a few notable exceptions. WandaVision was great until the finale, Falcon and the Winter Soldier was great all the way through in my opinion, and Loki was amazing through and through (except for the third episode). I enjoyed most of the What If episode except for Killmonger, Party Thor, and that finale. On the film side, Shang-Chi was fire, Spider-Man No Way Home is looking like it's going to be SPECTACULAR. And despite the low Rotten Tomatoes score, I'm really excited for Eternals and I think it's going to be one of my favorite MCU films to date. I'm not sure why the critics are ragging on it so much, though. I guess I'll find out on November 5th. However, I thought Black Widow really dropped the ball for me - the most of any 2021 MCU project. And I'm not sure why it's highly rated - apart from the chemistry and emotional opening sequence, that film had a poor, predictable, and strange story, a weak villain (did we really need a Russian Harvey Weinstein that had a bad Russian accent to boot?) and an unfortunate CGI-fest finale for a film that perhaps needed the LEAST amount of VFX or spectacle. I think Black Widow really missed the mark because they tried to up the stakes, scope, and scale so much that they lost sight of who Natasha was at her core: a super-spy, with emphasis on spy badassery. If they had removed that base flying in the sky, and made Black Widow do more Black Widow things, and focused on making things REAL and PHYSICAL, they could have made the film one of the most raw and nail-biting MCU films ever.

The main reason why the original Marvel Zombies comics were so intetesting is because the zombies were the protagonists and they were shown to be a lot more intelligent, and how much of a mental and emotional struggle they had when eating people. Having at least one of them to get "freed" from the Hunger and get added to the final teamup would have been a lot cooler.

My favorite was the doctor strange one. My take on the fixed point concept is that it isn't arbitrary, but rather a reflection of the true point of divergence: that in this universe, Dr. Strange loved Christine more than his skill as a surgeon. In each timeline, to be spurred on his journey to becoming doctor strange, he had to lose what he loved most, and the fixed point isn't some arbitrary limit but a reflection on how if Christine didn't die, he would have never undertaken that journey, creating a paradox that the universe would have to solve in any way that it could.

You got their individual stories and then a little extra at the end if you're into that sort of thing. The alternative is just another solo story at the end and u didn't seem to care for most of those anyway so at least this was a change of pace and like I said, a nice surprise. Where What If fails the most is that the original concept of the What If concepts is that those were always little, neat, stand alone stories that had interesting concepts and decent conclusions in the single issue, while this series wanted to do a weird crossover since the beggining, and also to be part of a setup for future series and movies, pretty much like the prevous Marvel Series. This is setup after setup after setup that we can't really have a moment to enjoy a series for what it is, Marvel thinks we must have a cliffhanger to keep us hooked but at the end it gets really tiring and annoying.

It just really seemed they didn't take anything seriously save for maybe a few bits of Ultron. It feels like we really haven't progressed far past the "would you prefer yellow spandex?" comments, like they're still too afraid to indulge in comic book stories because they're too silly for an honest effort

I loved what if! It was a bit rushed however feel many of the ideas were great but I did find myself wanting more! The animation was amazing, beautiful and inspiring. I’m going to do animation studies from this. The fight scenes were truly epic. I wanted the episodes to be at least double in length! I do agree that the pacing could have been better in general more would have been best. I decided too, and because the algorithm recommended it and I became curious.
Good to see different opinions sometimes.

An MCU Anthology show is such a gangbuster of an idea, the show nearly coasts on the novelty of its premises and the stellar visuals alone. But the character writing and tonal whiplash really lets it down sadly often.
For the first time in the MCU (for me anyway) characters really don’t feel like themselves. Sometimes that’s justified by the premise of the episode, but more often it isn’t and it feels like the writers just don’t have a grasp on who they’re writing for, or how to balance the drama and the comedy.

OMG Finally someone mentioned how some of the characters didn't feel like themselfs. Like Korath, who for some reason, becomes an annoying Star-Lord fanboy. In the movies he is a ruthless killer that clearly doesn't care much for others and has high respect for Ronan. But somehow, just because T'Challa is now on space, he becomes a goof ball of a character. The show doesn't even support this change as it is said that T'Challa saved Drax's world from a Ronan invasion, so by logic, T'Challa was literally going up AGAINST Korath AND Ronan, and he still became a fanboy... HOW ?? Maybe it's just me, but it feels really like they didn't even bother to search him up... just like they didn't bother searching up that Guardians 2 takes place BEFORE Age of Ultron, so Ego should have been dead already in the Ultron episode, and the Guardians should not have been on Sovereign as well...

@@redvitproductions2829 I don’t think Ego being alive in the Ultron episode is a problem- it’s pretty obvious The Watcher is pulling people out of time, as well as out of their own universes. At this point in the MCU, they deserve any and all criticism. It’s clear that they aren’t planning on ending the MCU anytime soon and during that time what the audience wants will change, so they need to be willing to change as well. People have already called out the formula, so Marvel needs to change the formula

    I didn't like this show.
Ultron was the biggest disappointment by far. Mostly due to lazy writing, James Spader's absence, and the character's quick death.
    Also the animation sucks ass.
And, yeah, Doctor Strange's timey wimey stuff was dumb af.
Holy crap, yes! The finale was so damn boring and inconsistent with Ultron's.. smarts. I hate it. And the stupid "killing off" of Ego, jeez.

This show is a dream come true as a reader of all the versions of this anthology comic, the shows stories do end abruptly much like I remember in the comic and most of the time the heroes take a huge L, tony stark always dies but that’s the comic not the MCU opinions vary. I didn’t love all the episodes especially the dr strange ep , 1 is my fav I am madly in love with Peggy all versions, let’s hope season 2 is better , please don’t give up on this show it can only get better, right? The main reason I liked what if was purely because i did not have to worry about the implications for the wider universe. It feels totally separate unlike the other 3 series we’ve been given. I also liked watching fights/situations that would never have happened eg. Captain Marvel vs Thor. Also i loved that Natasha was actually presented well, not just as ‘eye candy’ both her and Hawkeye felt like actual characters who did something. I actually felt invested in them. Lastly I loved Spider-man’s portrayal and why he’s so positive, it almost made me cry. But I found the whole show weirdly paced and most of the characters felt odd, and borderline boring.

I really liked it because they explored alternate aspects of the characters. You know, How Peggy still loves Steve when he’s skinny and weak, T’Challa as an interstellar hero, Hank Pym as a serial killer, Stephen Strange’s extreme need for control, Vision as a creepy zombie-feeding murderer, Hope full of guilt after spreading a Zombie virus, Thor’s immaturity without Loki, Hawkeye’s dying optimism after losing his family to Ultron. Also, I don’t get how people complain that there’s too much Marcel content. You know you can choose what to watch, right?

What they should do for What If? Season 2 is use the episodes to really stick it to the fan fiction crowd and makes episodes that showcase why certain things the fans think they want just would not work.
The way DC did in the 90's with the Reign of the Supermen, Knightfall and Emerald Twilight. All of those stories ended up showcasing why edgelord versions of our heroes are not what we wanted. (Eradicator, Cybrog Superman, AzBat and Parallax).
So do that with What If. Create compelling stories that show why we love these heroes the way they are and not the way we think we'd want them.

I disagree on the what if dr strange time travel point as it would be like the grandfather paradox, you won’t be able to change the future by killing your grandfather yourself as you wouldn’t exist to go back in time to kill him.
So if Christine never died, dr strange wouldn’t go back in time to save Christine hence creating a paradox.
Altho I agree with the third act really made everything disappointing mcu has fudged the third act in too many phase 4 movies and shows. COVID would really explain why this has happened a lot.
And you’re not ragging on it considering the 90s Spider-Man animated show and the batman animated show, what if was some of the most wasted potential among all the mcu projects, even more than the eternals dumpster fire.

Nah Tony has it super rough in Episode 3 as well, he gets killed right after reaching his most pathetic and pitiful point as Tony Stark and Iron Man.
Edit: my only issue with episode 3 is Hank, his performance, writing, and design is bad imo. Like I like Michael Douglas, and I think this version of the character is plausible, and Hank has been the Yellowjacket in the comics, but the execution felt hamfisted and over the top.

Wait wait! I disagree with the Party Thor episode. that episode felt like a 90s sitcom, like a high schooler cleaning up a party before mom gets home. I feel like the rick and morty episode that did the same thing was genuinely funny because it made multiple random and creative characters to laugh at. In Party Thor its mostly references about characters thru out the mcu partying and The only original one was Ice Troll Loki, which was great! And then yeah the Captain Marvel/ Thor / DBZ fight was still awesome but just sayin 👌

Honestly you described the comic marvel zombies really awful. Its not just a zombie setting in the marvel universe, in marvel zombies almost all the heros get turned into zombies but they keep their intelligents, emotions and thoughts. They can talk to each other, and that makes it much more scary because they still have their zonbie urges to eat humans. This episode just did an awful adaptation. In marvel zobies we didn't follow a surviver but the zombies themselfs. Also spiderman was the best character in that comic because he was one of the only onces that tried to fight his urges and not eat people, here he was just a surviver that made lots of unfunny puns.
